I
was settling down to an evening of Netflix and a glass or two of a particularly good red wine that I had been looking forward to when the cell phone in my pocket began to buzz. I had set it to vibrate on silent earlier in the afternoon when I was doing my regular afternoon Drive Show on Radio Life & Style and I hadn’t reset it to ring.
The caller was Malcolm Samuel from Simbithi checking to see where I was. I thought that this was really considerate as I was booked to present the Simbithi Quiz at their clubhouse on the following evening and I thought that this was a friendly confirmation call. It was, in fact, a call to check whether I was on my way, because they had a clubhouse full of contestants and the quiz was supposed to have started ten minutes ago. You can imagine my joy…I had it scheduled for the wrong evening! I won’t bore you with the details of how I made it to Simbithi in record time, except to say that my new VW Tiguan may have been plotted on the radar by Air Traffic Control at King Shaka International. Luckily I had set the questions in advance and we had worked up a system of power point slides with questions and answers appearing on a large screen to the click of a mouse. All I had to do was connect and begin – which I did in a flash. The questions were designed to challenge an audience of largely professional people from various walks of life and the standard was generally quite high – possibly a little too high as it transpired. Here is an example of ten random questions from the quiz. (answers on page 15) 1. What is the name of the actress who plays Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series of films? 2. Who is the South African singer-songwriter best known for his hit song, "Blokkies Joubert"? 3. What luxury British automotive brand was purchased by Tata motors in 2008? 4. In most modern vehicles, the carburettor has been replace with what? 5. In what year was the first Apple computer released? 6. What does the acronym "lol" stand for when used in phone texts and on the internet? 7. In music, the space between

one musical pitch and another with double its frequency is called what? 8. What is the national language of India? 9. Which tennis player has won the most men's Grand Slam titles? 10. Jacob Zuma has been married how many times?

So, how would you have scored? Some people in the room looked at me as if I was mad – Harry Potter…Blokkies Joubert… LOL… and it must be rather embarrassing not being able to contribute to your team’s score at all. Which is why I wasn’t overly upset by the acrimony I faced that night from some irate souls who had failed to shine. But from this exercise I have come to realise with a degree of certainty that no matter how hard you try, you will never be able to please everyone. Also, I have come to realise that some people take life far more seriously than can possibly be good for one’s health. As such, I think it is probably wise to leave this sort of thing to those who have a more robust epidermis...after all, a good bottle of red is so much more agreeable. Welcome to another edition of Life & Style. Visit us online at www.lifeandstyle.fm or tune in to 88.0FM for more of what makes life such fun in this super part of the world.

THE VISION 153 MIRACLE
What started out as a crisis became a blessing for the good folk at Vision 153, a local charity organisation that feeds over a thousand vulnerable people in our broader community. They do this because they care and they believe in the power of love and kindness. Their financial support comes from the community and although every month is a struggle, they manage… somehow. But when their old delivery vehicle was written off recently after a taxi collided with them, they were literally stuck with no way to get food and provisions to those who have come to depend on it. This is where the story takes an interesting turn. The management team at IPSS Medical Rescue and Security Services heard Nelia Hulin from Vision 153 being interviewed on Radio Life & Style, appealing to the community for help in any way possible, and IPSS swung into action. Working with other significant role players in the community (notably Bokkie Slabbert from Killarney Toyota Stanger and the team at Stanger Sign Plates) who joined forces with them to help, they have secured a vehicle and maintenance to keep Vision 153 on the road with a tracking system to keep them safe. Members of the public have also responded with cash donations to add to the mission to keep Vision 153 going (check out the Vision 153 Facebook page for the latest updates on their crowdfunding initiative). Nelia and her team met with the IPSS management team and support sponsors at the radio station in the Lifestyle Centre on Tuesday 30 May to officially receive the confirmation that they will be back on the road now. This is real love in action and we are so proud of what our Dolphin Coast community has done for an organisation that we believe in and support for the excellent work that they do. Long may they be on the road!

RESHLYGROUND formed in early 2002 and is made up of talented and diverse musicians from South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Fronted by the dynamic Zolani Mahola, the band exudes a live performance energy that has been the bedrock of their success.
In 2010, with their already gold fourth studio album, Radio Africa, Freshlyground broadcasted their unique sound, a sound that has turned the seven-¬piece into one of South Africa’s most treasured acts, to the rest of the continent and the world. The band put the finishing touches to Radio Africa in New York in February 2010 and the band was selected to co-perform in the Official Song for the 2010 World Cup. Entitled "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” the song is featured on Listen Up: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album, and is a collaboration with Colombian superstar, Shakira.
Freshlyground is coming to Ballito on Sunday June 11th for the second in the Marriott Ballito Beats concert series. Don’t miss it – tickets are available now at www.webtickets.co.za

ASHTON AFFAIRS NEWS FROM THE HEAD
• Christian Based ethos • Co-educational English Medium School • Affordable fees • Aftercare facilities • Astroturf under construction • Grade 00-00 to Grade 12
Joe Erasmus – Ashton College
A
S we approach our mid-year examinations, it is kind of surreal that so much has transpired in the first six months of 2017. It is a common response amongst many people as to how time has just ‘flashed’ by. Within a week or two, the corridors will echo with the absence of movement and noise as the students settle down to apply their knowledge and put pen to paper. Some of our Cambridge students have already started with their external examinations.
If we reflect over the last six months and see the progress in the construction of the new Foundation Phase block as well as the Astroturf on the Sports Campus side, there is a great sense of anticipation. The mere fact that we will be able to host our hockey fixtures on an FIH (Federation of International Hockey) approved Astroturf, will bring a tremendous amount of joy and relief. Just recently, we had the honour of hosting a Supersport Challenge Cup rugby game – what a superb day. If anything, our youngsters will remember the day as a school boy highlight, as they interacted with the provincial players post-match. It was a great family day for all and we believe this will become an annual event.
In addition to the Astroturf, construction will soon commence on a club house and ablution facility which will complement the sports campus facilities, affording Ashton the opportunity to host teams at the highest level. What has become very evident over the past couple of years, is the investment that our CEO Mr Andrè Buys has made in Ashton – not only on the educational side, but also by adding world class sporting facilities. Back in 2009 when he purchased the school, his promise was to develop this campus and keep private education as affordable as possible. He has certainly been true to his word, and construction upgrades are not subject to any form of fundraising. This means that tuition fees are only subjected to normal educational inflationary costs. Then, it is always a sad affair when we have to say goodbye to staff members. Mr and Mrs Denissen came as a package deal four years ago. They have both made enormous strides in their various fields. Mrs Denissen in the Mathematics Department, and Mr Denissen on the sporting front as Head of Senior College Sport. Sport
at Ashton has grown phenomenally and this can be attributed to the vast experience of Mr Denissen, who has spent time in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. He has invested an enormous amount of time, instilling a sense of pride throughout the sporting codes offered at Ashton. He has been more than generous in terms of giving his time to the students and often went over and above, to assist students in need. We are most certainly going to miss the Denissen family, and on behalf of Ashton College would like to wish Anthony and Paige and their son, Chase, all the very best for their move to New Zealand.
LOTS OF FUN FOR ALL AT THE
BLOOM COLOUR RUN
T
he Bloom Centre for Children with Special Needs 5km held a colour run/walk on Saturday, June 27th, at Sugar Rush Park that was a great success thanks to all who participated.
With over 600 people of all ages joining in the fun run covered in a rainbow of coloured powder as they tackled the Park Run course, it was a riot of festive fun for a very worthwhile cause. The fund-raiser run/walk was created by the Bloom Centre to raise awareness and support for children with special needs and their families, and judging by the turnout it would appear that this is something close to the hearts of everybody in this wonderfully caring community. Bloom is a creative space of hope and support where children feel loved, safe and accepted for who they are. They teach and care for children who have a variety of diagnosis; Down Syndrome, Autism, Low IQ, non-specified learning difficulties and children who are not coping in mainstream schools. Through love and support they grow happy children by opening new pathways to learning. At the Bloom believe in developing the whole child and being mindful of the individual needs of each child. The Bloom Centre is very grateful to Sugar Rush Park for allowing them the use of their facilities and to all who participated and supported the initiative in so many ways. Radio Life & Style’s Danielle Fisher did a great job as the Mistress of Ceremonies and the Life & Style team was thrilled to have taken part in the fun run. We look forward to next year’s event!

Says Rencken, “We are really excited to bring this offering to Ballito. The Melissa’s brand is totally committed to creating products and experiences for people who appreciate and value uality, so it aligns completely with what we are doing with the reinvention of Lifestyle Centre.” Hoarding is currently concealing construction on the new restaurant node which is also starting to take shape. According to Rencken, “John Dory’s, Hair 4 U and Scarla May, along with Zaras, Beira Alta, Imbizo Art Gallery, Trappers and Cape Union Mart, are unfortunately compromised during this transition period but they are still open and have some great offers to compensate for the inconvenience, so we trust that their Ballito customers will continue to support them.” The underground parking and the area above this will be out of commission from June for a 12 week period, as work starts on a new high level roof covering over this area, and will open again on 1 September 2017. Rencken has appealed to the public to make use of the front parking lot, as well as the rooftop parking, during this time. “We pride ourselves on our parking being free, safe and secure,” he says, “and the underground parking will soon be available again to supplement our other parking, with 2 lifts and a wide stairwell to convey shoppers to the brand new Dischem and surrounding stores.”

here are many places that serve good coffee on the Dolphin Coast but you might be surprised to know that one of the best is a hardware store in Ballito.
Actually BBS Mica Ballito is much more than a hardware store – it’s an extremely busy portal for the building trade, homemaker, gardener, camper and DIY enthusiast which is why it makes sense to create a coffee outlet near the trade loading bays where people are waiting to load and go. But this is not just a coffee dispenser – this is where you will find Barista Sam – Samwani Machipisa – plying his trade with charm and style. Sam is a popular figure
in the community. Originally from Zimbabwe, he was professionally trained as a barista in South Africa with the help of Clifton Smithers from Union 3 Interiors who hooked him up with friends in the coffee business. This was a wonderful opportunity for the young Zimbabwean and he applied himself diligently to the task. After a stint at the Litchi Orchard, through friends at Linc Church he got the opportunity to run the coffee outlet at Mica in Ballito and the word is spreading fast – for a fabulous cup of happy coffee to go, Sam’s the man! You pay for the coffee and the feel-good feeling is free which makes it about the best transaction you will do all day.

THE POWER OF
FOODS
STEPHANIE WILLS - LIFESTYLE HEALTH
W
ANT great health? Eat more green foods! And by green foods I mean;
•green leafy vegetables (spinach, rocket, Swiss chard) •cruciferous vegetables (kale, broccoli, cabbage) •herbs (coriander, parsley) •grasses (barley grass, wheatgrass) •sea vegetables (kelp) •fresh water algae (spirulina, chlorella) •green powders (essentially providing you with concentrated combinations of the above)
Chlorophyll
Chlorophyll is the pigment that gives green foods, plants and algae their colour. It is also one of the most powerful life-giving substances on the planet. Notably, chlorophyll has a strong impact on the quality and purity of our bloodstream. It has even been called “green blood” due to its similarity to the oxygen carrying molecule in blood; haemoglobin. In fact, the only major difference between the two is the binding mineral at the centre of their atomic structures. Chlorophyll is built around magnesium while haemoglobin is built around iron. Magnesium is essential for healthy brain, muscle, and nervous system function. What's interesting is that when green foods are combined with iron rich foods such as red meat, they increase haemoglobin and red blood cell counts faster in patients with iron-deficiency anaemia than iron supplements alone, and have a favourable effect on red blood cell formation in the bone marrow. Chlorophyll also alleviates blood sugar imbalances, soothes pain and inflammation, improves milk supply in lactating mothers, improves bowel function and helps to relieve painful haemorrhoids, improves respiratory function, reduces and eliminates
body odours, kills bacteria in wounds and speeds up healing, improves liver function, relieves gastric ulcers, increases the flow of oxygen in the body, improves skin disorders, and cleanses and detoxifies the body of carbon dioxide, toxins and stress. Yes, it's amazing! Aside from chlorophyll, green foods also contain an abundance of powerful phytonutrients & trace minerals. For example;
Green Leafy Vegetables – such as spinach, are rich sources of lutein and zeaxanthin. Two powerful anti-oxidants that protect the eyes from harmful UV light, improve vision and prevent agerelated eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Cruciferous Vegetables - such as kale and broccoli, contain isothiocyanates & sulfuraphane which are powerful cancer fighting nutrients. They are also excellent sources of vitamins A, C, E and K as well as iron, calcium, potassium and manganese. Broccoli helps prevent birth defects, improves the immune system and strengthens the bones. Kale is a great pre-biotic as well as offering anti-aging, cleansing and cholesterol-lowering benefits. Herbs – such as coriander and parsley, contain vitamins and minerals like beta carotene, folic acid, magnesium and iron. Parsley eases diarrhoea, helps to eliminate excess water from your system and helps balance hormones. Coriander is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that helps boosts immunity, enhances liver function, improves digestion and helps balance blood sugar. Grasses – such as barley grass and wheatgrass, contain digestive enzymes. The juice of these grasses may help improve symptoms related to stomach ulcers and other digestive conditions like celiac disease, indigestion, food allergies, Crohn's disease and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Barley grass also acts as a free radical scavenger that helps reduce inflammation and pain, and wheat grass has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant
properties, and helps the body attack cancer cells.
Sea Vegetables - such as kelp, contain iodine, vanadium (which improves metabolism and increases the body's sensitivity to insulin), and fucoidans (which have anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties as well as anticoagulant and antithrombotic properties that promote cardiovascular health). Single Celled Algae - such as chlorella and spirulina, are rich in easily-digestible protein (with all eight essential amino acids in the proper ratios) as well as enzymatic pigments phycocyanin & phycoerythrin which help carry out essential metabolic functions. Spirulina and chlorella are also great detoxifiers, able to break down and eliminate toxins and heavy metals such as DDT, PCBs, mercury, cadmium, and lead. Green your diet
unmatched by any combination of synthetic medicines or supplements. Therefore, drink fresh green juices, green smoothies, salads and soups, and/ or take a daily dose of a concentrated green superfood powder like Green Vibrance to instantly upgrade your health.
Greens represent a convenient, low calorie, nutrient-dense source of otherwise hard to obtain minerals, like magnesium, calcium, potassium, and manganese. The power of the phytonutrients in green foods to heal and rejuvenate a body is simply

The Comrades Marathon - Bringing Pe
The legendary Comrades Spirit is buoyed by an army of volunteers, some of whom have been supporting the race for over three decades. We take a closer look at the KZN people who make it happen. There are three tons of boiled potatoes, 800kgs of bananas and nearly 2-million water sachets which need to get from the tables lining the 86.96km route and into the hands of runners. The Comrades Marathon literally couldn’t happen without volunteers. Over 5 000 men and women man 48 refreshment stations, marshalling the route and generally making sure that the race day goes off smoothly. Among the corporate sponsors and clubs who’ve been volunteering on Comrades Day, for over three decades, are the Seals Swimming Club and Nedbank. It’s also the 34th year of participation for the Cowie Hill Lions Club. We touched base with Lion Jane Wicks, Jane says the appreciation from the runners keeps the volunteers coming back. “Last year, one of the runners said if it wasn’t for the support he got at Cowies Hill, he wouldn’t have made it. We try to help them along.” It takes months of planning to put tables together, particularly as a non-profit organisation, they need to try and secure sponsors. There’s also a strong environmental focus.
Volunteers are responsible for cleaning their table. “All the rubbish is picked up inspected. The rubbish is recycled and Cowies Hill Lions have scooped two thi came in second as the greenest table on QUICK STATS Comrades organisers expected over 250 the route between Durban and Pieterma that 2.4-million people tune in to watch the day. The Comrades Spirit is legenda the hundreds of thousands of spectators huge part in this. The Comrades medical facility is possib temporary facility in the world - outside On duty on the day were 60 doctors, 40 physiotherapists. 2017 marks the 92nd running of the Com run for the first time 92 years ago, but w years during World War II. Since then it event.
COMRADES CALLING... It’s Comrades season again and the big race day is almost upon us! In the lead up to this year’s Comrades Marathon, Life & Style chatted to running fundi Warwick Taylor (owner of Taylors Meats) for his take on the iconic race... - How many comrades have you completed? I’m very excited to be doing my 20th Comrades on Sunday. They call it double green because after 10 you get your “green” permanent number but what it actually means is that you’ve been crazy for a very long time. lol - What Keeps you going back? I absolutely love Comrades, I think it is an incredibly beautiful day, a day when everyone is equal. I love and appreciate the spectators who come out in their droves. The achievement also keeps bringing me back, It’s such a tough race which makes the sense of achievement massive. - This year is the up run, which do you prefer the up or down and why? I’ve always said I prefer the up-run, probably because for most of my running life I’ve lived in Pietermaritzburg and I’d be “running home” In reality there is not much difference between the two, the up right is approximately 3km shorter which helps but then you need that because you’ve got the might Polly Shorts to survive at which time you’ve done close to The Sports Zone 80kms! It’s amazing how many hills there are in the “down run” Running Co. - Favourite section of the run for you? The are the finish. Hahaha. On the “up run” I love getting footwear experts onto the streets of PMB, I know so many people in that beautiful city, it’s the closest I GET EXPERT RUNNING ever get to being a celebrity. On the “down run” I really enjoy going through Hillcrest, Kloof ADVICE FROM OUR and the greeting we get from the Kearsney boys TRAINED TEAM is always fantastic. - Most memorable comrades run? I’ll always remember my 1st which was in 1992. Two FOR RUNNERS, BY RUNNERS others stand out for me – in 2012 I had done very very little training, not clever! I set out to Shop 28, Kensington Square try and have fun and after a difficult 1st 2025k’s I did exactly that, I enjoyed myself and 53 Kensington Drive, Durban North loved my run finishing in 10hours40min. C the 2013 ‘up-run” it was really hot with berg winds blowing straight into us, probably the toughest/worst weather conditions I’d ever run in. 2013 recorded the highest percentage of non-finishers in the history of Comrades so I was delighted with my finishing time of 8hours55min. - Best pre-race meal? Have a big steak (from Taylors of course) on the Saturday before race day. On race day I will have a slice of toast with Bovril or peanut butter about an hour and a half before the start. Something that has worked really well for me over the years is egg and mayo on white bread, this year I’m going to throw in a bit of bacon, only because I really love bacon. I eat this after about two hours of running. I say this because I believe many athletes don’t eat at all or try and eat when it’s too late.

- Any tips for first time Comrades runners? Don’t forget to ENJOY your run. Forget about your watch, don’t be paranoid, you’ve done he training now go and have fun. Enjoy your ellow athletes, appreciate the crowds. When you’re having a “bad patch” (and you will have hem, you just don’t know how many) find another athlete who’s looking worse than you eel and encourage them, in so doing you’ll be helping them and you’ll forget about your own bad patch” - What is more tough running the Comrades or unning Taylors Meats? That’s an unfair question. Seriously though now that I’ve thought about it, I find similarity. They’re both bloody hard, I love both of them, love my biological family who support me during the run, I love my work family who support me at Taylors, I appreciate the pectators, I appreciate my customers. Both are a must do!

In runners, it is often tendons that cause problems. Tendons are structures that attach muscle to bone. Unfortunately they don’t have very good supply, which is why they sometimes don’t heal well. This is also why they can be tricky to treat. However, with the advent of Radial Shockwave Therapy, this has changed. Shockwave therapy uses a physical sound wave “shock”, rather than an electrical shock, to initiate inflammation and thus improve blood flow, which is necessary for healing. A treatment consists of around 2000 shocks, which are delivered at high speed. Treatments are given once or twice a week, with the total number depending on the condition and individual progress. Conditions that benefit from Shockwave Therapy include: - Achilles Tendonitis/Tendinosis - Plantar fasciitis - Patellar Tendonitis/Tendinopathy - Bursitis - Tennis/Golfer’s elbow - Rotator Cuff Calcific Tendinitis Rehabilitative exercises and other therapeutic or biomechanical treatments will often accompany shockwave therapy in order to address the cause of the injury. For further information or appointments call 032 815 0630.

INCREDIBLY EFFECTIVE
HEALTH TRICKS TO TEACH YOUR BODY
1. Curing a Tickling Throat This might sound crazy, but there is medical research to suggest that by scratching your ear you can relieve an itchy or tickling throat. This has to do with the nerves that reside in this part of your body that create a reflex in the throat, causing a muscle spasm, which in turn relieves the tickle! 2. Use Your Right Ear for Listening A recent study conducted at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine has shown that your right ear is better at following “rapid rhythms of speech”, so if someone is talking too quietly or too quickly adjust your positioning so you are primarily listening with your right ear and you will hear everything they are saying. Your left ear, however, is best for listening to music and identifying the different tones in music. 3. Calm Down With Cold Water One of the best ways to calm down is not to take a puff on a cigarette or slap yourself in the face (please don’t try any of the above), it’s to splash yourself in the face with cold water. By splashing cold water on your face, you trigger the mammalian diving reflex that is genetically part of our bodies. You essentially trick your body into thinking it is diving into cold water, which allows your body to use oxygen more efficiently and calm down. 4. Stop Peeing All the Time If you really need to pee and you don’t have access to a bathroom, then think about something that turns you on. Seriously. According to Larry Lipshultz, the chief of male reproductive medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, if you preoccupy your mind with thoughts of sexual pleasure and fantasies, you will forget about your pee and it won’t hurt as much. 5. Give Blood Without Feeling the Prick Giving blood is a great thing, morally at least, but it can often hurt, especially when the needle goes in for the first time. Now you can give blood without worrying about the pain by coughing when the needle goes in. According to a recent study by Taras Usichenko by coughing you cause a sudden rise in pressure in your chest, which stops the pain-conducting structures of your spinal cord.
6. Clear a Stuffed Nose Before you head to the medicine cabinet to relieve your sinus pressure, try this little trick. Thrust your tongue on the roof of your mouth, then use one finger to press between your eyebrows. If you alternate these two techniques one after the other for around 20 seconds you will start to feel your sinuses drain. This is because the motion causes the vomer bone, which runs through your nasal passages to your mouth, to rock back and forth. 7. Cure Toothache A Canadian study has found that by rubbing ice on the back of your hand, where the V-shaped webbed area is, you can reduce the pain of a toothache by 50 percent. This is because of the nerves in that V area stimulate the part of the brain that blocks pain signals from the face and hands. 8. Make Light Burns Disappear If singing your hand on the stove happens a lot to you, you know it can really hurt. If this happens to you, first of all, clean the affected area, and then apply light pressure with the finger pads of your other hand to the spot and the pain will be reduced. You can also try ice, but if you if you use your hand the skin will be far less likely to blister. 9. Get Rid of a Stitch We’ve all had it, we exercise and think we are coping with it, whether it be running or playing an organised sport, and then all of a sudden we have a “stitch”. This is caused because, like most people, you naturally exhale when your right foot hits the ground, by doing this you cause a downward pressure on your liver (which is on the right side of your body), which then tugs on your diaphragm, and creates the stitch. Instead of stopping and going home, try exhaling as your left foot hits the ground and feel the stitch disappear. 10. Stop a nose bleed To help stop a nose bleed take some cotton and place it on your upper gums, just behind the small dent below your nose. Then press hard against it to help stop your nose from bleeding. Most bleeds come from the front of the septum, the cartilage wall that divides your nose, and this pressure should intercept the bleed.

Married in S tyle
Thioshini and Travino Naidoo were married on the 20th in a beautiful little church built in Maidstone in 1939. It was one of the happiest weddings any bridal couple could wish for, and friends and family partied well into the night accompanied by a live band and some colourful flame and confetti big bang displays. Barry Bowditch and his team were on hand to capture the memories that no doubt the couple will treasure . We wish Thioshini and Travino a lifetime of joy and happiness together!
Sotheby’s sells the Apollo and Artemis diamonds for R743.44 million, making them the world’s most expensive earrings...
A
uctioneer Sotheby’s has sold the most expensive pair of earrings in the world, at a combined price of 57 million Swiss Francs (R743.44 million).
The mismatched pair is made up of two coloured pear-shaped diamonds; one Fancy Vivid blue diamond named Apollo and one Fancy Intense pink diamond named Artemis, which sold to the same telephone bidder. They will remain together as a pair, and have been renamed The Memory of Autumn Leaves (blue) and The Dream of Autumn Leaves (pink). The 14.54-carat Fancy Vivid blue diamond, previously called Apollo, was undoubtedly the star of the show, described before the auction as “truly exceptional”. An “infinitesimally” low percentage of stones are graded Fancy Vivid Blue like this. The world’s most expensive blue diamond, the
14.62-carat Oppenheimer Blue, is a Fancy Vivid - it sold for £40 million at Christie’s in Geneva last May. When considered as a pair with Artemis, a 16-carat Fancy Intense pink diamond, the set was described as being in “a class of its own”. It has been a privilege for Sotheby’s to be entrusted with the superb Apollo Blue and Artemis Pink, which have now been renamed,” said David Bennett, worldwide chairman of Sotheby’s International Jewellery Division after the sale. “These exquisite coloured diamonds are enormously rare and each is a wonderful stone in its own right. Together, as a pair of earrings, they are breath taking I am delighted that the stones will remain together.”
