BRADFORD’S INDEPENDENT QUARTER W

ith signs of summer here at last, Bradfordians have been enjoying a new dawn of the city centre leisure scene – with much of it based around an area now dubbed the city’s Independent Quarter. This pocket of new development, underpinned by the City Centre Growth Zone initiative, has sparked just as much excitement as the big players like Broadway’s Westfield Centre and the Odeon cinema plans. Centred around North Parade and Westgate, the Independent Quarter has drawn comparisons to Manchester’s established Northern Quarter due to the quirky individuality of the businesses. Easter saw the opening of The Beerhouse, a high-end pub and food venue which offers craft beer, cask ales and quality food - expected to appeal to discerning diners while favourably wetting the whistles of real ale fans in the party. This venue, and its neighbours on North Parade, all feature outdoor seating areas to bring a Mediterranean feel to this part of Bradford. As the sunshine starts to emerge, relaxed visitors can already be seen mingling along the Parade which also houses old favourites like The Sparrow Bier Cafe, Al’s Dime Bar and the City Gent along with quirky newcomer The Record Café with its beer, chacuterie and vinyl offering. Around the corner, off Westgate, is the popular new Bradford Brewery, which has brought back one of Yorkshire’s well-loved industries to the heart of the city centre for the first time in over 50 years. The brewery boasts an attached pub, the Brewfactory, which not only showcases its own locally-brewed products but also those

4

of other UK breweries. And in a ‘first’ for Yorkshire, let alone Bradford, the venue has clinched a deal with the award-winning national brand leaders Pieminister to be the county’s first ever Pieminister Pie Pub, serving a range of ethically produced pies from a menu made famous at Glastonbury festival. A true phoenix from the ashes comes in the form of Café Bell-A-Pizza – a swish new pizza restaurant and takeaway taking shape in the remains of a stunning Victorian building on the junction of Westgate and Barry Street. Due to open shortly this modern, trendy, bistro-style café will serve freshly-cooked Italian food, cakes and coffees – plus some Asian snacks. A stylish restaurant in the evening, it will also cater for workers and shoppers during the day. Folding doors will open up the 100-seater dining area onto Westgate so diners can enjoy that Mediterranean café culture feel right across the Independent Quarter. And there’s talk of ‘something a bit special’ for families at this one. The Mamma Mia Italian restaurant, Smorgasbord Coffee Bar and Fish Dish restaurant and takeaway have all been revamped. As well as bars and eateries, the Independent Quarter also boasts: the Fuse Art Space on Rawson Place - a gallery, performance space, book and record store. The Bazaar, off Westgate in the old Rawson Market, with 100 stalls selling Asian and multicultural products; plus lots of new additions to the historic market venue, the Oastler shopping centre. Well worth a visit, not just to support local independent businesses and the rebirth of our own city centre, but also for a great day out in its own right.

new pizza restaurant opens in bradford R

estaurant rises from the ashes of fireravaged city shop. A massive refurbishment is nearing completion which sees a fire-ravaged city centre building transformed into a modern new pizza restaurant. Café Bell-A-Pizza on Westgate, is the latest newcomer to Bradford’s Independent Quarter, providing an exciting new food venue to compliment the fast-growing bar and leisure scene. The stunning Victorian building was gutted in a huge blaze four years ago when it housed a school uniform shop called Natasha’s but an extensive £360,000 restoration has revived the ornate exterior – with a date of 1895 now clearly visible on the cleaned-up stonework. The new owners were awarded a £159,000 Bradford Council Growth Zone Grant to save the five-story building at the heart of the city’s Goitside Conservation Area. It was so badly damaged in the blaze that it has had to be stabilised and given a new roof, floors, and windows as well as a complete redevelopment to convert the blackened interior into a chic city centre restaurant and café bar. Café Bell-A-Pizza, on the junction with Barry Street, has a contemporary, modern open-plan style. The redevelopment has restored some of the building’s historic character by exposing original stone pillars and fascias and retaining the

8

attractive arched window surrounds. In summer, folding doors will open up the 100-seater dining area onto Westgate creating a Mediterranean café culture feel. Restaurateur Sid Hussain started out as a pizza chef before opening his first BellA-Pizza restaurant in Bracewell Avenue, Allerton, three years ago. He says the new city centre venue will be a modern, trendy, bistro-style café, and will be particularly family-friendly. It will serve freshly-cooked pizzas, cakes and coffee as well as some continental and Asian takeaway snacks at lunchtimes for city centre workers. In the evenings it will have more of a restaurant ambience, while on Sundays it will also offer traditional English Sunday lunches. As Local Focal went to press, Café Bell-APizza was on schedule to open around the end of May and staff recruitment was already underway. The top three floors of the building have been restored as nine upmarket flats, some with stunning views across the city, which are expected to appeal to city centre workers, helping to keep the Independent Quarter alive in the evenings. David Robertson-Brown, Director of Gumption Centres Ltd, works under contract for Bradford Council within the Bradford City Centre Growth Zone. He said: “We’re delighted to see Café Bell-A-Pizza coming to life, as it was one of the most ambitious Growth Zone schemes, restoring a property which has been an eyesore for several years. “We’re also pleased that the people of Bradford will soon have another high-quality eatery to enjoy, - and with something a bit special for families.”

Keep your energy efficiency high and your bills nice and low. Summer is just around the corner, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be keeping a close eye on your energy efficiency. Here are our 10 top tips on ensuring you’re remaining energy efficient throughout summer and making valuable savings on your bills: 1.

In the summer season, switch your thermostat to 4 degrees and turn your boiler onto ‘summer mode’ or ‘hot water mode’ only.

2.

If you use an electric hot water cylinder, set your tank to ‘economy’ mode.

3.

Install thermostatic radiator valves and turn them down to ‘frost protection’ if you’re not using them in certain rooms while the heating is on.

4.

Install draft excluders on windows and doors so you don’t have to turn on the heating on cold nights.

5.

Turn off lights and plug sockets that are not in use.

6.

Install energy efficient light bulbs.

7.

Instead of using your tumble dryer, hang your clothes out to dry.

8.

Install internal and external wall insulation to save up to 25% of your heating bill.

9.

Install loft and attic bedroom insulation to save up to 50% of your heating bill.

10. If you have an old inefficient boiler, replacing it with a new energy efficient boiler can save you over 35% on your gas bill, which will eventually pay off the cost of your installation! So there they are, our 10 top tips. Viva Gas is a family run business with over 30 years experience in keeping homes warm and comfortable. If you have a question on any of our tips above or anything energy related, visit vivagas.co.uk or call us on 01274 653953, we’re always happy to help!

HOW YOU CAN HELP: FUNDRAISING IDEAS Are you an animal lover? Sickened by the stories you hear about animal neglect and cruelty? Ever wondered how you can help? Well here are a few ideas to get you started… Fund Raising Ideas Why not organise a sponsored event, this could be a swim, a walk with friends, a school activity, a dance marathon at a dancing school or even taking part in a large organised event such as The Great North Run or The London Marathon! The ideas are endless and always lots of fun. Schools have regular fetes and fun days and these are organised events which can be easily adapted to raise funds for a charity through selling homemade produce and sponsoring sporting

events. These type of events can also be a great excuse to ask parents to commit to bringing along a bin liner filled with no longer needed clothes and bric-a-brac. After the event we will send one of our RSPCA collection vans to take everything away. Other ideas for children now that spring is just around the corner are things like mowing lawns, tidying gardens and cleaning your bedroom for a donation. Pubs and clubs can host quiz nights, hold a tombola, you can place RSPCA collection tins on the bar or sell raffle tickets. There are so many ways you can help the RSPCA Bradford and District to achieve their £125,000 target this year, if you would like any collection tins or to arrange for us to collect any large donations of clothes, bric-a-brac, furniture or pet food please call 01274 723063.

Foodies say ‘cheese’ as brewery pays homage to fromage.. A tasty treat is in store for Bradford foodies when a cheese club that’s been sweeping across the north is brought to the city. Bradford Brewery’s pub, the Brewfactory, is hosting Homage2Fromage - a monthly cheese club that started in Leeds, then expanded to Sheffield, Harrogate, and Manchester. The first Bradford event is on Thursday, May 21, starting at 6.30pm in the pub, off Rawson Road, Westgate, in Bradford’s Independent Quarter. Then it’s every third Thursday of the month. Brewfactory manager Sam Kirkham says: “Although people usually think about pairing cheese and wine, beer and cheese are actually an excellent combination too. The Homage2Fromage clubs are held in pubs and cafes all over the North of England and are extremely popular, so we thought it was another brilliant event that food and drink fans would really enjoy. We’re very excited to be bringing it to Bradford.” Cheese fans simply buy a ticket on the Homage2Fromage website http://www.clubhomage2fromage.co.uk which allows them to join in the tasting on the night. Connoisseurs arrive to find various cheeses on display around the room, identified only by numbers. Then there’s time for the obligatory foodie selfies while guests discuss the forthcoming fromage! When everyone is settled in and having a Gouda time, the 18

organisers call ‘CHEESE!’ That’s the signal to tuck in to the cheeses. There are plenty of crackers, bread and chutney, fruit and all kinds of tasty accompaniments. The aim is to remember the numbers – then, when people have had enough time to sample the cheese, there is a short presentation identifying each one, a chat about the cheeses on offer, feedback, queries and questions. Each event is themed (cheddar, Irish, blue and so on) and some club nights may feature special ‘big cheese’ guests to talk people through their fromage. Speakers have included Blur bassist Alex James, who is also a renowned food writer and cheesemaker; experts from Yorkshire cheese-makers and cheesemongers like Shepherd’s Purse, Cryer & Stott; and Lancashire’s Dewlay cheesemakers. Co-organiser Nick Copland says: “The aim of the club is to celebrate great cheese in an informal fun way. This is not a pretentious cheese and wine tasting event, as some people might imagine - it’s about sharing one of the greatest foods ever, in a simple, relaxed way. Homage2Fromage helps you discover new cheese, meet like-minded fromage fans and hear some of the amazing stories behind cheese and cheesemaking.” “If you are passionate about cheese, curious about the many different kinds of cheese out there, how it’s made, where it comes from, who makes it, and why something so simple can be so diverse, so versatile, so delicious – then this is the club for you..”

ANTIQUES AT THE MILL AND TOUR DE YORKSHIRE Antiques at the Mill in the village of Cullingworth were lucky enough to be chosen by race organisers Human Race to host the welfare and site facilities for cyclists taking part in the Tour De Yorkshire Sportive on Sunday 3rd May 2015. Due to the unpleasant Yorkshire weather, the organisers underestimated the number of cyclists that would choose to stop at this point, with approximately 4000 plus riders attending the mill feed station!

Unfortunately the cyclists had had a very wet and cold start and were very much in need of warm drinks, warmth and rest. Antiques at the Mill owner Chris Harney and Shop Managers Helen and Ralph Wood showed true Yorkshire hospitality by supplementing the depleted feed station by providing many hundreds of cyclists with a hot drink and a bar of chocolate, before wishing them well on their journey! Hopefully Antiques at the Mill will be lucky enough to provide these facilities next year, and hopefully the Yorkshire weather will be a little more forgiving!
