'Dreamy Denim' Welcome to the latest edition of Here & Now Magazine! By now, you should have seen our newly designed H&N, which we are extremely proud of as the feedback from readers and advertisers is brilliant! In this latest edition we have even more for you, especially as we have increased the size by 8 pages due to demand since launching this new look and increased our editorial content. I have to say that this success is mainly down to the brilliant design of our new team member, Joanne. So, what is there for you to read about this month? Well…it’s that time of year when most of us either want to get fit or lose weight after the excess of the summer holidays; maybe both. So we have an extended feature on health, fitness and weightloss and you will see that Joanne and I have taken up our own 90 Day Challenge on the Body by Vi programme, however there’s lots of different ways to lose the weight and we are profiling quite a few of them. Our fashion section hales from local independent stockist of some great designer labels - Flouncy Flouncy and there’s a complete house of beauty all under one roof at Liberties & Co, both in Bingley. Bingley is rich in unique local business, give these local businesses a try and you'll soon see there is no need to go out of your local area to get the very best. Support small - buy local! Our homes section is also much bigger as people start to think about those homes improvements before Christmas and whether you just need to titivate or have a more ambitious project looming, we have the people to use for reliability, great workmanship and fair prices within these pages. Plus kids back to school, late holiday ideas and fantastic stuff to win! - If I say so myself, this is a great read.s e Until next time....

SUGAR The World's Sweetest Killer
When was your last glucose hit? An hour ago? Yesterday evening? Are you gorging on chocolate right now, or just about to?
B
ritain has had a long love affair with sugar, and as such
perhaps it's no surprise that our English-speaking cousins across the Atlantic still find our dental hygiene somewhat alarming. We love sugar, whether crammed into cakes or spoonfed via the accompanying cups of tea, but how often do you stop to consider what it's really doing to you, other than paving the way for yet more fillings? According to a spate of recent studies, it's high time we all began taking this problem very seriously indeed. As per a recent article in the Daily Telegraph, Britons now consume an average of 238 teaspoons of sugar every week, and this could be having a seriously detrimental effect on our health. Worse still, not only are we choosing to ignore the dangers, it's becoming a problem of fullblown addiction. In fact, French scientists in Bordeaux claim that, in lab tests, rats actually opted for sugar over cocaine even when addicted to the latter. Apart from being appalled at the idea of rodents having coke habits, this is potentially worrying in terms of ramifications for our highly sweetened modern diets. If sugar really is so habit-forming, and we're pouring it down our necks at such an alarming rate, then unless social norms change, a huge number of us are running in a sugar-high straight towards A&E, whether that's through diabetes or heart disease, to name but two of the conditions that can result from too much sugar. Of course there are hugely different types of sugar available, and the impact of each on our bodies does differ. For instance, added sugar in fizzy drinks can be eleven times more potent when it comes to causing diabetes than other forms of calories. In contrast, stirring some molasses in with your flapjack mixture is going to be far less harmful to your health. Nevertheless, no doctor would recommend a high intake of any sugar or substitute, simply because our bodies aren't really designed to process such substances in high levels, and particularly not in processed and concentrated forms. Put simply then, much as we hate to admit it, the time has come to kick, or at least get a handle on this sweetest of habits before it really gets out of hand.
4
Interesting factoid: Sugar may give you wrinkles via a process called glycation, in which excess blood sugar binds to collagen in the skin, making it less elsastic.

FITTING IN FITNESS It's all very well for fitness trainers to recommend three full-on cardio sessions plus toning and strengthening exercises every week, but not everyone can find time for all that. As you may well know, it is all too easy to sign up for gym membership but it is not that easy to fit regular exercise into a busy lifestyle. Physical activity combined with a healthy diet keeps you looking good and, more importantly, is the best prevention you can get against obesity and many major health problems. The fact is, your health should always be your priority but this doesn't mean that you have to spend hours gruelling away at the gym to make it number one. Gym member or not, you can always find the time for exercise, if you set realistic goals. If you have a busy lifestyle but want to workout, aim for a more sustainable routine. The intention to spend an hour-and-a-half in the gym after work is only worthwhile if you can achieve that. Start by increasing your daily activity levels: walk to and from the station, get off the bus a stop early, walk the kids to school and back or take the stairs instead of the lift to your office. This is a start, but you can do better than that. The time that you might spend watching Coronation Street or the first half of The Bill can be put to much better use - you can even workout while you are watching them so you don't miss out. At least three times a week, slot 20 minutes in your busy life for a selection of these fast workouts. Interval training sessions: This is a good workout for your heart and stamina. Pick an aerobic activity - such as running, cycling, swimming or even skipping. Rather than stick at the same pace for 20 minutes, try alternating between sprinting or an all-out effort for one minute and then slowing down until you get your breath back and then speeding up again. Follow a five-minute cool down and stretch.
6
Circuit session: This is a good total toning and cardio workout. Choose five or six toning exercises - such as the squats, lunges, hamstring curls, push-ups and pectoral squeezes - and perform 10 repetitions of each exercise one after the other, without resting. Repeat this up to four times and you'll have completed a great fat-burning session by keeping your heart rate up and also incorporating resistance exercises. Follow a five-minute cool down and stretch. Gym body part workout: This will help strengthen or reshape problem areas of your body. In just 20 minutes you could perform three sets for three or four targeted exercises using gym equipment. Follow with targeted stretches. A good weekly routine would include targeted body part workouts in between cardio sessions. Stretching: This helps re-balance your body, improve flexibility and lengthen and tone your muscles. If you are unsure of how to correctly stretch, speak to a personal trainer in order to avoid injury. Relaxation: Busy lifestyles mean stressful ones, so part of your short exercise sessions should focus on balancing the mind and easing muscle tension. Lie on the floor with your palms face up. Close your eyes and breathe deeply through your diaphragm. Allow your lungs and diaphragm to fill as much as possible, counting in for four, and then slowly exhale, counting out for five. You can also relax muscle tension. Start at your toes and clench then relax them, move to your calves and clench and relax and slowly use this technique for all of your body parts to help relax tight muscles. Busy lifestyles limit our opportunities to exercise, but keeping a regular workout routine will help to keep you in shape - Try simple exercises at home....

with Ying Yang skincare Since 1973 Yin Yang has been at the forefront of botanical science in skincare. Their exclusive fermentation technology for releasing skin enhancing botanical enzymes and proteins from plant ingredients has produced a unique family of effective skincare products... Organic Skin Care Products Yin Yang Skincare was born in 1973 when Katie May formulated a range of plant based natural skincare products, free of chemical additives, and often using organic botanical ingredients, that were designed to work with the skin's own systems of renewal and defence. Pure skincare, effective skincare and affordable skincare - the three principal qualities of our natural skincare products for 36 years. Launched at Cranks iconic "green" store and restaurant on Carnaby Street, London in 1973, Yin Yang Skincare quickly became the natural skin care range of choice for the early advocates of chemical free botanical products. But why Yin Yang?
Aimed at dry skin types, vegans and those with a poor diet and lacking in protein and vitamins. This nourishing kit contains Provit-En which contains coconut with its essential fatty acids, fermented soya, acidophilus, apples and oranges to create an exclusive solution to leave your face glowing with radiance, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and improve your skin tone. It also contains the Skin Cleanser and the Orange Flower Tonic.
Yin Yang Balance & Perfection
The Essential Travel Kit RRP £33.98
Yin Yang is an ancient Chinese philosophical explanation for the perfection of the Universe and all the myriad life within it. Yin and Yang are explained as two great opposing, but complementary forces, that maintain balance and perfection in all things by their continual and equal struggle for dominance: neither one ever prevails and over time one changes into the other, like day into night and night into day.
The Essential Travel Kit is the more generic kit and is designed for all skin types. It comes with 3 miniature sizes of Yin Yang bestsellers: the Natural Moisturiser to deeply hydrate your skin, the Skin Cleanser to remove all makeup and impurities and the Orange Flower Tonic to give you an instant fresh feeling with this gorgeous scented geranium face mist. www.yinyangskincare.com
Natural Skincare Products Human skin is in a constant process of renewal as young fresh cells from the dermis migrate up to the surface epidermal layer to flatten, harden and finally peel off, and all the while the skin is being challenged by hostile external forces ranging from the weather to pollution and man-made chemicals. From the very start, Yin Yang Skincare products have been formulated to nourish & hydrate the skin, and to help maintain & restore the critical balances of acidity and microfloral cover that keep the skin looking healthy and beautiful. Because acidification is important for the maintenance of the skin's barrier function, all Yin Yang skincare products have a pH value of 4.5 – 5.0 which is perfect for the health of the skin’s protective microflora. This so called “acid mantle” is the first line of defence for the skin and the body beneath.
Yin Yang Skincare for Your Daily Skincare Routine Today you will find Yin Yang Skincare products in stores across the UK which offer natural, organic and health focused product lines. Fragranced with subtle essential oils of citrus and aromatic plants, our delicate creams and refreshing sprays, have been designed to be part of your Essential Skincare Routine.

The Replenishing Travel Kit for Very Dry Skin RRP £35.87
H&N recommends... We absolutely loved the essential travel kit, it landed just as our designer trotted off for a girly break away... "I travel light - hate waiting around for suitcases so I'm a hand luggage girl. This was a fabulous little kit to take away with me, the size fitted perfectly into my bag. I loved the non greasy formula and found the ornage flower tonic so refreshing. After a day in the sun I used the moisturiser to give my skin a lovely glow for my evenings out and the cleanser was awesome for removing eye make - no panda eyes in the pool! Thoroughly recommend this line of products and will be stocking up shortly!"

PROUDLY GOING BACK TO OUR H S I T I R B ROOTS... With the world's spotlight bathing the UK in glory for the past couple of years, national pride is at an all-time high. Much has been written about the benefits the Olympics have brought and it seems that one of the boons is a renewed sense of self-confidence and a refreshed respect for the best of British. While the positive ripples are having a life-changing eect in the sporting and health fields, this tide of revived appreciation has swept through countless strata of UK life. And it seems that one of these is a return to the country's classic staples - the Royal family and traditional family dinners. UK mothers have certainly come home to roost with Royal guests and classic dishes as the ultimate dinner party wish list, a new survey by The Red Tractor reveals. One in four mums said they would most like to invite the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge over to dinner ahead of Dame Judy Dench, Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah and David Beckham according to research by Red Tractor Assurance. And while most households enjoy watching cookery programmes, the reality of juggling the kids and running a busy household makes mums play it safe when it comes to cooking the evening meal, with over a quarter of families reluctant to take inspiration from television chefs. Just two out of 10 mums seek tips and recipes from home-grown mover and shaker Jamie Oliver ahead of Delia Smith and Nigella Lawson, Gordon Ramsey, Marco Pierre White and Heston Blumenthal don't come get a look-in. Despite all the wild and wonderful cooking books, TV shows and ethnic restaurants, over 50 per cent of households opt to cook a traditional
16
roast dinner with over a third taking the easy route and preparing the great British classic, apple crumble for pudding. Only one in 20 wanted to add some va-v-avoom to the dinner table and invite Shades of Grey author EL James. Interestingly, over a quarter of husbands polled said they would like to cook something new for their guests but over a half agreed that sticking to tried and tested favourites was the safest bet. And a remarkable 13 per cent of the respondents confessed that they wouldn't cook anything for their guests. Richard Cattell, Head of Marketing at Red Tractor which commissioned the study of more than 2,000 families, says: "We're aware that shoppers are faced with a variety of choices, both from the high street supermarkets and also when eating out. "The survey tells us that shoppers like to support British food, with more than 55 per cent already looking out for the Red Tractor logo when choosing their dish a clear sign people care more about food which is produced to good standards of farming and food production, with a guarantee of origin." Research by Red Tractor has also revealed that UK shoppers eating out and cooking at home would welcome a clear guarantee that food has been produced to good standards. Over half of people polled say they look out for a symbol which demonstrates that the food has been produced to a high standard, as well as a sign of origin. And when it comes to cooking and eating out, over a third of the shoppers surveyed like to know where their ingredients come from and prefer to source UK ingredients.
MY THAI MYWORD! We love Thai food, but it's rare we indulge as it always seems a bit of a hassle and an extra expense to get a cab into Leeds, so we invariably end up at a local restaurant eating the same as last weekend and the weekend before! Baring this in mind, I was delighted at the prospect of being introduced to what turned out to be an absolute gem of a place right on my doorstep.
There were four of us in our party and we all agreed on ordering one of the set taster menus - there are plenty of mouth watering offerings on the menu but we thought this would give us a few choices each - and so it did. First came the selection of starters, chicken satay, crispy prawns, angel wings, fish cake and my favourite the pork dumpling. All were sublime, beautiful flavours, perfectly cooked and served with tasty dipping sauces. Then came the Tom Yum Goong Soup, oh my Lord! This was absolutley delicious, really highly spiced and intense flavours with huge juicy prawns and fresh tomatoes, I could eat this soup all day long! Main courses were a mixture of seabass, duck, king prawns and beef dishes accompanied by noodles, jasmine and fried rice. All were really good and there was plenty, way too much infact for the four of us and we can all eat plenty! The service was really extremely good, my glass was never empty and nothing was too much trouble. These guys really know their stuff and being a real Thai food fan, I can definitely say that this restaurant compares favourbly to any of the big hitters in Leeds and beyond. It's my new favourite place and I will count myself as a regular from now on. Take this complimentary £5 voucher and hot foot it down there for excellent & authentic food, outstanding service and great value. Not to be missed!

We visited on a Friday evening, having made our reservation for 7.30pm. We arrived and were pleasantly greeted by Simon, the owner. It was actually a special evening for us as we were celebrating our wedding anniversary so pop went the Prosecco and we made ourselves comfortable in the plush pre dinner seating area. Having polished off the bubbles we were shown to our table. The restaurant was really quite busy but the ambience remained perfectly relaxed and the staff completely unphased.

Freya... Freya, a Bull Terrier/Staffordshire cross was brought into our centre in March this year; hers is a very sad tale of horrendous abuse and neglect, she had been left in a property to die and when found she was so close to death that she was not expected to survive the night. However survive she did and Freya proved what a little fighter she is as with the love and care of our team she made a full recovery and was socialised by the animal care staff, giving her confidence and support and Freya recently found her ‘forever home’.
Buck and Paws... Paws is an adult female rabbit, she came into our care because she was left abandoned in a box and had been with us since May 2012. Buck is an adult male rabbit who came into our care as a stray and had been with us since June 2012, these adorable rabbits were paired together in October 2012 and were our longest small animal residents…until recently when they were adopted into
RSPCA Retail Shops
We have five retails outlets in the local area selling clothing, electrical items, furniture, bric-a-brac and pet food and we are always in need of new stock. You can support our shops by supplying goods for sale and of course by purchasing items yourself. Our retail outlets provide much needed funding which we re-direct to our animal centre, to continue with the care of cats, dogs, birds in the aviary and the wildlife centre. Funding also supports our vetinary clinic and helps manage the increased demand from people in the community who struggle with their vets bills. Thank you to everyone for your continued support.
There are many ways in which you can offer your support and help to raise much needed funds towards Operation Animal Save: • Collect £1 from friends and family • Collect unwanted items of clothing, bric-a-brac or electrical items from your street, school or club. • Pubs, shops, restaurants and other retail outlets can place one of our collection tins on the bar or counter • Support our RSPCA welfare clinic
their ‘forever home’.
Roger... Roger made his debut in Here & Now a few months ago after being brought into the centre with a terrible collar injury. This was repaired and Roger turned out to be a wonderful cat with a really lovely nature and we are very proud to announce that Roger has also now found his ‘forever home’
ET... ET is our most recent injured cat to be brought into the centre, we have repaired the injury and nursed ET back to health, but now we need a loving ‘forever home’ for ET to live out the rest of his life in a loving and safe environment.

Thank you...
If you can provide such a home for ET or any of our other animals at the centre please call today on 01274 723063. It is brilliant to be able to keep you up to date with our activities here at the RSPCA Bradford & District Centre, however we would be unable to do a fraction of our animal welfare work without your generosity and support, so thank you and please continue to offer support where you can.

LADIES All the Ladies... Ladies Networking Groups are growing stronger in our area… Lots of ladies find the world of networking very scary and intimidating, the main reasons being a) they are new to business and have never had to network and b) the world of networking is historically a very male dominated arena and with all of that testosterone flying around it can be hard to make yourself noticed and be heard! However, that is all now changing in West Yorkshire as there are a number of very successful networking groups
specifically aimed at women, run by local ladies in business and dedicated to helping you gain networking confidence, they offer support and provide collaborations and introductions that would otherwise take forever to achieve, or even be beyond reach without the right connections. Need to know more? The best way is to attend one of the meetings and see for yourself how easy it can be so book yourself onto our next meeting…we look forward to seeing you there.
Women with Vision is a ladies networking group which meets once a month on a Wednesday evening, usually in the Shipley area, and has been running successfully for 6 years. WWV provides a safe, supportive educational environment for women in business to learn the rules of networking and how to effectively get those all important business referrals through tapping into the extensive contacts of the other members. Meetings are held in the evening from 6pm to 9pm to avoid cutting into the working day, a buffet and other refreshments

hand made pine & oak furniture At a price you can afford...
Pineoakio Furniture was established in 2010 by owners Mick and Stacey; they felt there was a gap in the market locally for quality wooden furniture and home accessories and originally opened in Cullingworth, where they stayed for the next few years. Eventually they realised they had outgrown their current premises as their business was expanding very quickly and the search began for larger premises with a workshop to keep everything under one roof, enabling them to offer a better service to their growing customer base, especially those requesting bespoke, handmade furniture. They soon found the perfect location at Parkside Works on Parkwood Street in Keighley. Pineoakio Furniture offers a wide range of services including traditional and modern pine and oak furniture for every room in your home and even have an extensive selection of accessories to create those all-important finishing touches. If you are looking for the perfect gift for someone’s home or that
introduced a fabulous kitchen showroom to showcase some of the wonderful designs Pineoakio can create. Stacey explains; “People love the fact that they can come into our showroom and tell us exactly what they want and we can make it for them. If they want a chest of drawers painted black with pink spots, then that’s exactly what they get!” So what is separating you from your perfect kitchen or wooden furniture? GOT IT COVERED? Nearly a fifth of UK adults do not have home insurance leaving families to face the financial burden of burglaries or major mishaps, new research has revealed. The study shows that the issue is even more widespread among the under 35s, with more than one in three admitting they would have to pay out of their own pocket if their furniture, clothes, or family heirlooms went up in flames. And with more than half of Brits planning a getaway over the next two months, this means that as many as three million people without insurance will be leaving their homes empty for a week or more. The research also reveals that despite this, many people still make careless mistakes when it comes to securing their home.
"However, without it, you could be leaving your worldly goods open to damage or burglary and are risking paying out hundreds of pounds from your own pocket if something does happen."
One in five admits that they regularly leave windows open while more than one in 20 keep large amounts of cash in their home. In addition, 16% never lock their garden shed, 13% don't know if their smoke alarm works and 5% leave a spare key under their doormat. The findings also show that more than one in ten people have been caught out by not having insurance and have had to fund average losses of £358 from burglaries, house fires, spills and breaks out of their own pocket.
The safest populations are Yorkshire and Northern Ireland, where nine in 10 people have home insurance. The survey also shows that renters are happy to take more risks, as 40% of those who live in rented accommodation forgo home insurance compared to just seven per cent of those who own their own home.
Lee Mooney, Head of Home Insurance at The Co-operative, which commissioned the study of nearly 1800 UK adults, says: "Worryingly, our findings show that a large number of people in the UK are going without home insurance, a problem which is particularly affecting the under 35s. "The issue is that no one thinks they're ever going to need insurance until something goes wrong, and in today's economic climate it's easy not to prioritise it.
24
The research shows that the economic climate is to blame for creating an "uninsured population", as the top reason for not having insurance is being strapped for cash, with more than half of those without home insurance saying they can't afford it. Nearly a quarter of those surveyed also say that they've stopped paying for home insurance as part of recent budget cut backs, while more than one in four people say that it features either low or very low on their list of priority household expenses. The findings also show that the UK's biggest uninsured population lives in London, with more than one in four adults taking the risk of not having cover.
Statistics from The Co-operative Insurance also show that over a lifetime, more than eight in 10 people make at least one claim on their home insurance - so it seems that a policy needs to feature higher up in the pecking order of priority expenses.

ATLOCK is a home security product and the ultimate visual deterrent for would be intruders, while providing home owners with instant peace of mind. Patlock has been designed and developed in the uk to assist home owners in securing their property against burglars and the growing trend of lock snapping. Most forced entry burglaries are committed through the weakest point at the rear of the property, usually the patio or french doors. Entry to french doors fitted with standard handles and locks can be forced in less than 30 seconds. Fitting a PATLOCK removes the risk of lock snapping as your doors are held secure even without any locks in the doors. Locking systems on French Doors are operated by the door handles.
If the handles are held secure all shoot bolts and levers remain in the locked position ensuring the doors cannot be opened. PATLOCK works by holding the interior handles secure once the shoot bolts and levers are in the locked position. This stops the exterior handles from being operated and the doors unable to be opened from the outside.
Why choose Patlock? INSTANT FRENCH DOOR SECURITY LOCK EASILY FITTED AND RELEASED IN SECONDS NO KEYS OR CODE NUMBERS REQUIRED ADDS EXTRA SECURITY AND PROVIDES PEACE OF MIND SUPPLIED WITH A PAIR OF TAMPER RESIST DOOR SPINDLES LOCKS PATIO DOORS SECURELY, STOPS INTRUDERS FAST PATENT REGISTERED DESIGN, DEVELOPED IN THE UK

Sprucing up... 3 Popular DIY Projects DIY enthusiasts are never quite satisfied with their homes, always looking for the next opportunity to modify or improve. But for those who have never made a foray into the 'do it yourself' realm, it can be difficult to know which projects are most suitable for beginners, and what projects will render the most notable improvements, especially if you are preparing a house for sale. A Lick of Paint This aspect of DIY is so obvious that many people don't even consider it DIY, but the difference between a professional paint job and a thoughtless paint job can be huge. Whether you are refreshing radiators, transforming windows or completely redesigning a room with an exotic new coat of paint, painting is a simple way to have a big impact with minimal cost and effort. When painting, always move furniture away from areas you intend to paint and cover carpets and furniture with dust sheets to prevent paint splattering. Paint in brush strokes going up and down, never side to side. This ensures an even coat and smooth finish. If painting around a door frame, window or skirting board 'cut in' the paint. This involves very slowly and carefully painting around the item so you achieve a clean line finish. If you are not confident, you can cover the window or door frame with masking tape, paint and then remove the tape once painting is finished.
New Fittings 26
Kitchens and bathrooms are fertile ground for DIY. They have the advantage of having the essential components (bath, shower, sink and toilet in bathrooms, and units and sink in a
kitchen) already installed. This means that a big impact can be made merely by changing the aesthetic elements, such as kitchen cupboard doors, tap fittings and tiles, to create a completely new feel. Such a makeover is easily accomplished and there are a wide range of new looks you can achieve, either by sourcing curious vintage pieces from your local architectural salvage shop, at car boot sales or from antiques dealers, or simply by visiting IKEA to achieve a more modern look.
Splash Out On Soft Furnishings One of the simplest and most effective ways to transform any room is to reassess your soft furnishings. Removing carpets and fitting slatted flooring or restoring beautiful Victorian floor boards can look spectacular and create a strong sense of space when coupled with an attractive rug. Sewing new cushion covers is very simple and the only cost is fabric and thread. Re-upholstering a sofa is no job for an amateur, but it is relatively inexpensive and can change the feel of a room. You could also consider replacing curtains with blinds and covering painted walls with exciting new wallpaper. You could even source your own images and have them printed onto bespoke wallpaper. The opportunities are only limited by your imagination. There are plenty of other DIY projects beginners can consider, from installing homemade bookshelves to designing and framing your own artistic prints to be displayed on your walls. Search the web, looking at websites such as Pinterest, for inspiration of things you can achieve yourself.

BACK TO SCHOOL The day your child starts school for the very first time marks a huge milestone in family life...
Gone are the days when your little rug-rat was devoted to you and you alone - and now they are venturing out alone into the world. The prospect is guaranteed to give rise to a huge range of emotions as you worry about how your little one will cope without mum or dad. However, many parents make one big mistake which means that starting school becomes more, not less, stressful for thousands of four-year-olds across the UK who are getting ready for their big day. Often parents are so worried about how their children will cope that they ignore their own anxiety which results in a stressed-out mum or dad struggling with their emotions - with disastrous consequences for the child. If you're the emotional type - and we challenge even the most stoic not to feel a little bit wobbly as your precious small person totters through the school gate - then its worth thinking about what might set you off and doing a few simple things to prepare yourself. You will feel confident that you won't be dissolving into tears as you approach the school gates - which will mean your child should bounce into school filled with confidence rather than trepidation! Play expert Dawn Burden says: "No parent wants to be the one in the playground sobbing behind dark glasses. "But unless parents prepare themselves for the start of school,
30
this is often what ends up happening. "If a child looks to their parents for reassurance and sees someone struggling with their emotions it creates huge anxiety, making settling into school trickier than it should be." Here Dawn, who is also director of The National Book Club for Nearly Schoolers, shares her top three tips to prepare for a smooth and happy start to school life for both you and your child. • Buy the uniform as early as you can and play getting dressed games to get your child into their clothes a few times before school starts. Seeing your small child, rosy with pride, trying to look grown-up in a school uniform two sizes too big is bound to end in tears...so make sure you get used to the sight! Plus, he or she will know how to get dressed and undressed for PE lessons. • Don't leave getting to school on time to chance. Have a practice journey one morning and draw a map together of little landmarks you might walk or drive past. On that first morning, you'll both be focused on looking for these rather than the end of the journey. • Give them a tool kit. Practice the basics - putting your hand up, asking for the toilet, finding a
teacher if you are hurt or worried, asking other children if they would like to play. Spend some time 'make believing' being at school. This will give you the confidence to know that no matter what happens they will have the tools to ask for help.

MAKING
SUMMER
LAST JUST THAT BIT LONGER While summer may on it's way out here in the UK, there are still plenty of places to get in some last minute sun worshipping. In fact there are some places which are even better as the hot summer draws to a close....
CROATIA
1. Croatia Croatia still hasn't reached the height of its popularity and, somehow the British holidaymaker still doesn't seem to often consider it. But this picture perfect country with its lovely beaches and Medieval towns has certainly caught the attention of Italians and Germans. By September and October though you'll be almost alone as the climate cools quickly.
2. SICILY Sicily Don't leave it too late to head for Sicily - the rainfall begins towards the end of October when temperatures fall to around 23oC. But if you're ready for a break in September and early October the balmy island of Sicily could be the place for you. The cooler weather makes outdoor pursuits such as cycling easier but beaches are certainly not out of the question either.
3. MOROCCO Morocco No visit to Morocco is complete without spending plenty of time in Marrakech's atmospheric souks and medinas. But in high summer when temperatures can reach 38oC elbowing your way through crowds to barter over lanterns and slippers isn't all that appealing. In Autumn a cool breeze slips over the dusty streets bring temperatures down to the mid-20s.
36
TURKEY
4. Turkey By virtue of its location Turkey finds itself enjoying a much longer summer than many of its package holiday brothers and sisters. The south coast in particular remains hot well in to Autumn, offering prime sunbathing time as well as plenty of sights to see. Antalya in particular is ideal for those wishing to explore further away from the beach.
5. Cyprus If all you want from your holiday is the hot sun beating down on a beautiful beach and a warm sea to dip your toes in to, Cyprus is the place for you. During October temperatures are in the high 20s, soaring to the low 30s if you're really lucky and the sea stays incredibly lukewarm for those water babies out there.
6. MALTA Malta just isn't a place to simply laze on the beach. The islands are home to so much incredible history and architecture that you'll want to spend several days soaking up the atmosphere in locations such as Mdina. The hottest months are over by September though temperatures remain pleasant during the day, giving way to cooler evenings.

The vocabulary of movements expounded in the dance practise serve as a catalyst to bridge various issues around identity, equality and appreciation of an ‘art loving’ community in West Yorkshire. Hence, KalaSangam offers performance opportunities to all the students of the academy wherein young people project miniscule performance pieces on various secular and religious pieces. Bradford is a multi -cultural city with several exposures to Western dance forms of Jazz, Ballet and Contemporary. Such dance forms lionise the cultural scene in Bradford and have continued to do so for a long time. In spite of several western over hauls in the dance scene in the city of Bradford, children and young people strive to learn Bharatanatyam with utmost sincerity and enthusiasm at KalaSangam. They are given the initiative to grow as young performers and lovers of South Asian art forms and not just dance per se. The academy teachers are qualified dance practitioners with years of experience in the practise of Bharatanatyam. The classes begin at 9:30 am in the morning and run till 2:30 pm. Young people of different age groups come to learn this composite dance of
Bharatanatyam on a Saturday morning. “ Bharatanatyam is such a composite art form, to study this dance form in its entirety I need to immerse myself in the music, rhythms, narratives and the sculptural and iconographic underpinnings of the art form. The well - equipped dance studio space helps me to get immersed into the practise of this art form. The teachers imbibe a multidisciplinary approach to the pedagogy of Bharatanatyam says Sheetal Sanak, an advanced academy student at KalaSangam. Every class is well planned ahead with equal importance given to the structure of the class. Every class is divided between the theory and the practical component of the syllabus. The children appear for graded examinations in Bharatanatyam at the end of every academic term. “ Bharatanatyam is fun and dynamic and there is so much of joy in learning the rhythms, the expressivity and the various pattern of movement. We are truly lucky to have such wonderful teachers who discipline us through this art form and make it an utmost enjoyable experience” says Shabarja, another keen student from the KalaSangam dance academy. The smile on the young people’s faces and the enthusiasm in their conversations truly make Saturdays a worthwhile experience for running such classes at KalaSangam.

Brits planning to get their bodies in shape for the party season should start their diet now if they want to sparkle this Christmas. The countdown to get into that little black dress begins in earnest as nearly three million Brits start the winter weight loss battle to shape up for some serious fun. Experts say starting your diet now is a sensible way to lose weight as it allows suďŹƒcient time to get into shape in a healthy and measured manner before the corks start popping, and lets face it, they will pop! Nearly half us are aiming to drop at least one dress size by the time the celebrations begin with 27% aiming to drop two dress sizes and nearly one in 10 hopeful of reducing their waistline by three sizes. More than half of festive dieters want to shed pounds so they'll be the talk of the town while 36 per cent admit they want to lose weight to impress their friends and family. However two thirds of people polled say they diet before Christmas to help counteract the weight they will pile on over the holidays The research also found that a woman's ideal dress size increases with age. Those in the 18-34 age bracket say that they would like to fit into a size 10 while women aged 35 and over say they would feel most comfortable as a size 12. Dr Matt Capehorn, Clinical Director of the National Obesity Forum, comments: "Starting a diet now gives dieters a reasonable timeframe in which to lose weight steadily by Christmas. "It's important not to fall into the trap of last minute crash dieting, which is often unsuccessful and can play havoc with blood sugar levels and appetite cravings. As a result, dieters can end up gaining weight as they struggle to cope with changes brought on by such extreme measures. "Undertaking a healthy eating and exercise plan now with a realistic goal in mind will ensure dieters are not only looking good but feeling great this party season." Leading UK dietitian Helen Bond adds: "The festive season is full of edible enticements that often prove hard to resist. From office chocolates to impromptu drinks and rich
Did somebody mention the dreaded 'C' word? meals it can often seem like a struggle to avoid the almost inevitable expanding waistline. "Aim to strike a balance with what you choose to eat and drink and don't feel like you are saying no to yourself all the time - otherwise you are at risk of giving in completely!" The research was carried out by new XLSMedical, a naturally derived, clinically proven weight loss aid. Personal trainer Elise Lindsay, and fitness advisor to XLS-Medical, concludes: "We are all different shapes and sizes and there's no one perfect dress size. "Dieters should focus exercise efforts on the parts of the body which will be on show during the party season."Work on your shoulders and biceps if your dress is strapless or get working on those legs if your dress is short - extra squats before you party will do no harm at all!"
