aildon In Bloom’s “Wacky Scarecrow Walk” on Saturday 11th September started off at 7am in pouring rain when the exhibitors began their setting-up session, which lasted three hours. Fortunately the rain didn’t last long and it meant exhibitors were soon setting up their scarecrows around the village. Apart from the odd shower, by lunchtime the sun was shining and crowds were pouring into the village. The Committee has noticed that the public created a “carnival atmosphere”. Everybody was smiling and laughing and it was obvious that they had

come to enjoy themselves and were eager to start searching for the 172 scarecrows that had been set up around the village and of course to make a note of the best scarecrows in the competition. There were some wonderful characters like Wallace and Gromit in St John’s churchyard, along with Buzz Lightyear and other fantastic creations. One humorous scarecrow up Westgate was “Computer Man”, which kept blowing up with a cloud of smoke. Further up the road was a scarecrow high up on a lighting standard, doing a pole dance to music – just a bit risqué!

LOOM’S WACKY W WALK 2010 There was a spectacular creation made by members of a Mencap group called Unique Voices based at Ian Clough Hall. Their theme was “Pirates of the Caribbean”. They had built a pirate ship called Black Pearl, which was 20 feet long with cannons and an anchor and decorated with gold lettering. There were scarecrows on board the ship of Captain Hook, Peter Pan, Wendy and Tinker Bell. The staff and the members of the group were dressed as pirates and were having a good old sing-song with sea shanties and this made it all very realistic. The boat will feature in the group’s pantomime version of Peter Pan, to be performed

at Ian Clough Hall on 17th November, 1st December and 8th December, at 1pm. Please telephone 07 919 542 016 for tickets, which cost £2. The event turned out to be one of the best for Baildon In Bloom. We can look forward to another Wacky Scarecrow Walk next year. The winner for the best group of scarecrows, awarded a silver platter, was the pirate ship. The winners in the general category were: (1st Prize, cup) Wallace and Grommit, (2nd Prize, digital camera) Sponge Bob and (3rd Prize, meal for four at Webster’s) Computer Man.

ingley Show has always been extremely popular with people travelling from all over the region to attend and this years’ event was no different. This was much to the relief of the organisers as with the extended closure of Ireland Bridge, it was thought that exhibitor numbers may be down, however the bridge re-opened just in time and with a fabulous day of weather; Bingley Show experienced another triumphant year! New to the main ring was a crazy clown feature, which entertained the kids and adults alike. For older children the motorbike display team were back, a popular spectacle and the noise and thrills once again wowed the crowds; added to this the old favourites, the sheep dog display, falconry, heavy horses, and a riding for the disabled demonstration, plus many more attractions, made a great day out for all

the family.

Titan the Robot was once again the main draw for children, and he also made an unexpected appearance at the Airedale Agricultural Society Lunch, which went down a storm with the dignitaries, Titans cheeky charm winning everyone over! Personally our favourite attractions were the sheep shearing Australian with the dancing sheep, who also educated his audience as to the reasons why sheep are sheared – he brought out the child in everyone in a very clever and entertaining way. There were also some marvellous old cars on show, each having been lovingly restored and kept in pristine condition by the owners. I absolutely loved the Bubble Car which brought back fond childhood memories of riding around in my elderly Auntie’s many years ago. I would love to get my hands on one now! The prize bulls on show had to be seen to be believed, huge muscular beasts so ripped they would have given Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime a run for his money, and they were in their

The vegetables children were asked to identify included commonly available carrots, potatoes and broccoli, as well as the more unusual kohl rabi, globe artichokes and fennel. Three quarters of children said they eat at least half of the fruit and veg; 4% said they eat them all; and only 5% said they eat less than a quarter of them.

parents will be trying to get them gobbling their greens again. “We’ve always thought that the more engaged you are with your food, the more likely you are to eat it, so we give out lots of free recipes each week to help people cook, and we encourage customers to visit our farm. These results seem to back up our theory: the children of Riverford customers ate a wider range of ‘weird’ veg than those of non-customers. “If you’re still struggling with those dreaded courgettes, see if you can win the kids over with our Chocolate Courgette Cake recipe; they’ll never believe there are vegetables hidden inside.”

The veg challenge has been taken by children at numerous shows this summer from Otley Show, The Great Yorkshire Show, Bingley Show, Halifax Show, Ripley Show and most recently at Keighley Show, the veg challenge proved very popular and got local kids thinking about where their food comes from. Riverford will be exhibiting at the West Yorkshire Organic Show on 18th September in Exhibition Hall, Saltaire as part of the Saltaire Festival the veg challenge will be their on the day for anyone wanting to test their veg knowledge. Chocolate courgette cake By Jane Baxter, Riverford Field Kitchen Taken from the Riverford Farm Cook Book 120g softened unsalted butter 125ml sunflower oil 100g caster sugar 200g soft brown sugar 3 eggs, lightly beaten 130ml milk 350g plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 4 tbsp cocoa powder 450g courgettes, peeled and finely grated 1 tsp vanilla extract Put the butter, sunflower oil and both sugars in a bowl and beat together until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs and then the milk. Sift the dry ingredients together and fold them into the mixture. Stir in the courgettes and vanilla, then spoon the mixture into a 20x35cm baking tin lined with baking parchment. Place in an oven preheated to 190°C and bake for 35-45 minutes, until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. Cut into squares whilst still warm.
