However, with the arrival of summer it is a timely reminder for us all to be equally security conscious.

When the sun is shining it is so tempting to throw open the doors and windows to let in the fresh air. Nothing wrong with that, but just think you might be letting in more than just fresh air if a little care is not taken. It’s not easy to be vigilant all the time. It’s tempting just to bob upstairs or round next door for a minute leaving your home wide open to the opportunist thief. And I’m sure I’m not the only one to have gone to bed on the odd occasion, forgetting to lock the door or secure a window. But, if we can just think ‘Burglar’ we may prevent ourselves from becoming another statistic. The next time you leave a wallet mobile phone or keys next to an unlocked front door or an open window it can present an incredibly easy target for burglars who can take them in just seconds. Let’s not hand it to them on a plate!

A simple security chain can prevent unwanted entry in to the home whilst leaving a door open for fresh air. Never leave keys in the locks of doors or windows or on view. Avoid leaving valuables near windows, for example mobile phones, handbags, jewellery, expensive ornaments and keys. Consider installing an audible warning system on external doors which will alert you to possible intruders. (Door alarms are for sale via our Watch shop) On Saturday 23rd July the police station at Eccleshill hosted the 2nd annual open day. The event was very well attended and again we were blessed with fantastic weather. I can’t thank enough our co-hosts Church on the Way for their help and assistance. Thank-you to all partner agencies who attended and helped to make the event so successful.

Having said all that, the number of household burglaries has fallen significantly in recent weeks so the message is getting across. People are taking time to ensure their homes have a good standard of security. Sub standard locks are being replaced and sash jammers and alarms fitted………have a great Summer! Riverford Organic says kick-start your Organic September by getting the kids in the kitchen As the Soil Association kicks off its monthlong celebration with the launch of Organic September, Guy Watson, founder of award-winning vegbox delivery scheme Riverford Organic, is urging people across the country to remember what organic food is really about. “The founders of the organic movement were an earthy, practical lot with mud on their boots and a passion for the health of the soil and their livestock, and consequentially that of the nation. I imagine they would be horrified by the way some organic brands use exclusivity as a marketing tool; it’s a betrayal of the essential inclusiveness and sharing at the heart of true organic farming.” To this end it’s time to get families back into the kitchen, cooking together and sharing the creativity and mayhem that is at the heart of every busy, lively home. What better way to get kids keen on cooking than throwing some chocolate into the mix?! Riverford’s chocolate beetroot brownies are both easy and great fun to make, and are generally wolfed down before they’ve even cooled down. organic is here to stay.” Chocolate Beetroot Brownies By Jane Baxter, Riverford Field Kitchen Taken from the Riverford Farm Cook Book Makes about 9 Ingredients: 250g dark chocolate, chopped 200g unsalted butter, cut into cubes 250g beetroot, cooked 3 eggs a drop of vanilla extract 200g caster sugar 50g cocoa powder 50g rice flour (ground rice) 1 tsp baking powder 100g ground almonds Put the chocolate and butter in a large bowl and place it over a pan of simmering water, making sure the water doesn’t touch the base of the bowl. Leave to melt, then remove from the heat. Purée the cooked beetroot in a food processor. Add the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla and sugar, and mix until smooth. Sift the cocoa powder, rice flour and baking powder into a bowl and stir in the ground almonds. Stir the beetroot mixture into the melted chocolate and then fold in the dry ingredients. Use baking parchment to line a rectangular tin, roughly 28x18cm. Pour in the mixture and place in an oven preheated to 180°C/Gas Mark 4. Bake for 30-35 minutes, until just firm to the touch. It’s important not to overcook brownies; a skewer inserted in the centre should come out slightly sticky. Leave to cool in the tin and then cut into squares.
