Fireworks and Family Fun for All
Bingley Bonfire, Saturday 6th November - Myrtle Park, Bingley
Photos Courtsey of Chris Horner/mccrash.co.uk
A COMMUNITY EVENT TO RAISE FUNDS FOR LOCAL CHARITIES This year’s annual Firework Extravaganza once again took place in Myrtle Park, Bingley on Saturday 6th November
fireworks that lit up the Bingley night sky – one cannot imagine a better display.
The 40 year old event, currently organised by Baildon and District Round Table and supported by Bingley Airedale Rotary Club was yet another dazzling success.
“This year’s event could not have been better, we had a fantastic crowd of people, mainly comprising of families. The infrastructure of the park on the evening is superb and is the reason why we consistently have one of the safest displays in the Yorkshire Region. We had so many compliments on the evening that it really makes it worthwhile to hold this event.
A wonderful clear day turned into a crisp evening, perfect for bonfires and fireworks. With record gate receipts, this year’s event is testimony to the hard work that Round Table and Rotary have put into it. The Pulse got the show going at 6.30pm with Alex and Becky from the Breakfast Show and they had their dancers on hand, along with the usual fun and games that is now part and parcel of the Bingley Bonfire. This year also saw the new girl band ‘P5’ taking to the stage with three songs from their debut album. The girls really entertained the crowd and they look as though they won’t be too far from becoming household names in the music world. With the fire lit at 7pm and the fireworks at just after 7.30pm, the whole show went to plan and the thousands of revellers were absolutely delighted with yet another amazing display of
Chairman of the event Stephen Birss said:
Gate receipts are fantastic and this means that there will be literally thousands of pounds going to good causes in this area. We would like to thank everyone for making our event the best around and we look forward to seeing everyone again on Saturday 5th November 2011. Bingley Airedale Rotary Club will now take over as the main organisers of the event, assisted by members of Baildon and District Round Table. Everyone in Round Table would like to thank the public for all their support over the last eight years that we have organised the event. We are confident that Rotary will continue to make the Bingley Bonfire a safe and wonderful evening for all over the coming years.”

the future in renewable energy Since April 2010 the government has announced the new “Feed-In-Tariffs” which means you will get a guaranteed payment of 41.3p per Kwh for any electric you produce from the solar panels guaranteed for the next 25 years whether you use it yourself or not! That’s right you can use all the electric yourself and still get paid to generate electric. What this means in the real world is if you in invest in the region of £7700 into a solar system for your home, this will buy a 1.4Kwp system that will produce approximately 1200 Kwh per year (based on a southerly facing roof). Times this by 41.3p and that gives you a yearly income tax free of £495.60 indexed linked, plus it will save you buying 1200kwh from an electric supplier, saving you another £168.00 (based on you buying at 14p per unit). Not only that, but in addition the utility company will assume you export 50% of your generation which will give you another £18 based on a export rate of 3p per unit! Total savings and payments per year is £681.60. Solar system is £7700/£681.60 which makes payback for the system in year 11, and you continue to earn another 14 years of £681.60 per year, which is £9542.40 tax free, rising over the years because its indexed linked. Greenhill Action Group The Greenhill Action Group was originally formed in 1992 by a group of local residents opposed to a proposal to build a ‘Dales Village’ on the open green fields bounded by Sty Lane, Micklethwaite Lane, the canal, Oakwood estate, Fairfax and Falcon Road areas of Bingley. This was defeated. Bradford Council is now doing a review of the UDP (a legal requirement). The first revision was issued in mid-2001, with the Greenhill site again zoned for housing although it was scheduled for release in 2008 because the Government now requires previously developed land to be used first. The site is described as having ‘access constraints’ - to access the lower part of the site a swing bridge will be built over the canal, which will mean the canal will be closed for 6 months. This 40 acre site could accommodate up to 800 houses, and the impact on local roads, especially Micklethwaite Lane, Oakwood Drive, Falcon and Fairfax Roads and Beck Lane, and on services such as schools and health services, is all too painfully obvious. GAG is non-political and is solely
opposed to development on a green field site which is the only green lung for residents in the Bingley / Crossflatts area. If you would like to be involved, see our diary of meetings below. > 2nd December - Crossflatts & Micklethwaite Neighbourhood Forum meeting at St Aidan’s Church (2:00pm) > 7th October - Bingley Neighbourhood Forum meeting at Bingley Art Centre (7:30pm) > 22nd September - Eldwick and Gilstead Neighbourhood Forum meeting at St Wilfred’s Church (7:30pm) If you feel you can help us in any way whether it be delivering leaflets, raising funds, or with our traffic surveys please advise the secretary, Liz Brown, on liz@ nevisuk.net who will pass your details to the Group Coordinator. Also please email all your friends and contacts who may be interested in our campaign to visit our website and to join our mailing list.

Break the Cycle of YoYo Dieting with Lighterlife by Christine Smith of Shipley Most people know obesity is on the increase, and so are all the medical conditions associated with it. What you may not realise is that being just three stone overweight classifies you as being clinically obese and this can affect self confidence, fitness levels and more seriously, according to figures released by the NHS puts you at an increased risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension and cancer. Obesity is estimated to shorten your life by an average of nine years. But you no longer have to be another statistic thanks to Lighterlife. Lighterlife is a unique weight loss and weight management programme that has been designed specifically for men and women who have a BMI of 29 and over, and the programme has successfully helped thousands of people to make lasting changes and enjoy happier, healthier lives. The medically monitored programme was developed over a decade ago by three professional women with personal experience of obesity who wanted to offer a lasting solution to the familiar phenomenon of yo-yo dieting. It is the only national weight-loss and weight management plan that looks beyond food to examine lifestyle and emotions in order to help clients break the weight loss/gain cycle. Christine Smith runs Lighterlife meetings in small groups of people. The nature of the weekly groups is extremely supportive and clients can also make additional visits to Christine if they feel they need a little more support. And the support doesn’t stop there. Once the target weight has been achieved, the qualified Lighterlife counsellor re-introduces clients to conventional food slowly, and educates you on healthy choices in order to maintain your
weight loss and new figure for life. “There is more to weight loss than eating less and exercising more. If it was that easy everyone would be slim and healthier. That is why Lighterlife uses a powerful combination of very low calorie nutritionally complete soups, shakes and bars, which enable fast and effective weight loss, along with counselling techniques which include cognitive behavioural therapy and transitional analysis to examine the thoughts, feelings and behaviours that have led clients to become overweight.” Christine Smith, Lighterlife Counsellor in Shipley. It has been a successful year after opening Popular Hair in Bingley for Katie Jones, and Lucy Cottle of Envy Beauty Studios, has now teamed up with Katie to open a beauty salon within. Lucy has now also successfully opened her second salon in the area and is going from strength to strength. Katie and Lucy met four years ago while working n a salon together, instantly becoming friends. And after Lucy opened her first salon in Crossflatts three years ago, Kate also then followed her dream and opened her own hairdressing business at Popular House in Bingley. The two salons complement each other perfectly, offering a wide range of all hair and beauty treatments and products. Lucy also employs Steph Barr, both working between the two beauty salons. Steph also qualified as a hairdresser last year and has also taken on the role of junior stylist working with Katie at Popular Hair part time. Lucy trained Steph in the salon, running her on job training alongside her college training, to make sure that Steph met her own high standards of service and customer care. Lucy explains, “Training for me means in-salon training as well as gaining a college qualification. It’s not something that can be done overnight, it’s a long journey on which you grow and
develop as a therapist. Steph’s achievements have been fantastic in the two years she has been with us and she now helps to run both salons. I’m sure this will continue as she further progresses into the hairdressing field with ongoing training from Katie.” Both Katie and Lucy enjoy training and developing Steph and are looking to further increase their team next year with another therapist and hairdressers chairs to rent with Katie.

in organic vegbox company Riverford’s summer challenge. The vegetables children were asked to identify included commonly available carrots, potatoes and broccoli, as well as the more unusual kohl rabi, globe artichokes and fennel. Three quarters of children said they eat at least half of the fruit and veg; 4% said they eat them all; and only 5% said they eat less than a quarter of them.
It’s official: children know their carrots from their courgettes A survey of 1,500 children around the UK has shown that it’s not all bad news when it comes to kids and vegetables. On average, children aged 3-11 recognised over 80% of fruit and veg
Riverford also quizzed kids on their favourite and least liked fruit and veg. Carrots came out on top, followed by sweetcorn and broccoli. The most disliked veg was Brussels sprouts, then courgettes. Andrew, who delivers Riverford vegboxes to families throughout North & West Yorkshire, said “We’re really encouraged that not all children think milk comes from cartons or tomatoes in tins. With kids going back to school and getting into a healthy routine after the holidays, lots of

parents will be trying to get them gobbling their greens again. “We’ve always thought that the more engaged you are with your food, the more likely you are to eat it, so we give out lots of free recipes each week to help people cook, and we encourage customers to visit our farm. These results seem to back up our theory: the children of Riverford customers ate a wider range of ‘weird’ veg than those of non-customers. “If you’re still struggling with those dreaded courgettes, see if you can win the kids over with our Chocolate Courgette Cake recipe; they’ll never believe there are vegetables hidden inside.”
The veg challenge has been taken by children at numerous shows this summer from Otley Show, The Great Yorkshire Show, Bingley Show, Halifax Show, Ripley Show and most recently at Keighley Show, the veg challenge proved very popular and got local kids thinking about where their food comes from. Riverford will be exhibiting at the West Yorkshire Organic Show on 18th September in Exhibition Hall, Saltaire as part of the Saltaire Festival the veg challenge will be their on the day for anyone wanting to test their veg knowledge. National Organic Fortnight runs from 3rd-17th September 2010. To find out more about getting engaged with your food visit www.riverford.org or www.soilassociation.org
