“Interesting times” Was the expression used by Richard Greenwood, local franchise owner of Ovenu, the UK’s premier oven valeting service. Bookings this year are showing a remarkable growth of around 50% on the corresponding period of 2010 and Richard puts this down to last year’s “new crop” of delighted clients now returning to the fold to have their annual spring clean. There is no doubt that the warmer, longer days of early spring affect people in a positive way and the “valeting” of ovens, as Ovenu prefers to call it, has a particularly strong demand after the long winter we have just endured. The most loathed household chore is “music to the ears” of the highly trained, highly professional team of oven valeting technicians, setting about to restore the dirtiest ovens to a pristine level of cleanliness. The beauty of our service, Richard says, is that the householder just does not have the equipment nor the expertise to emulate our standards of cleanliness and whilst most first timers to the service are keen to be given an assurance of value-for-money, their fears are soon allayed once the job is completed.One of the really good aspects of dealing with Ovenu is that the company website (www.ovenu.co.uk) has a short video which illustrates the cleaning process and that, coupled with the hundreds of testimonials from clients, is proving a very useful and persuasive tool.
The client base, Richard explains, is quite varied although the typical client tends to be the retired person who perhaps no longer has the energy, mobility or resolve to clean their own oven. Or people with young families who don’t have much time on their hands. Or again people who want to use their leisure time in better ways than tackling their dirty ovens. A large proportion of Richard’s team is family related with all of them living in the locality. People still like to feel they are dealing with local businesses and local people and whilst the team covers all of West Yorkshire, the main emphasis is to service the local need. The business should see around 2500 ovens being cleaned this year but the forecast is to double this figure within the next two to three years on the basis that the majority of all new clients will re-book within a twelve to eighteen months period. “Interesting times “ Indeed!

ook at your home through the eyes of a burglar. If you can get in without keys then so can a burglar. No forced entry is used in approximately one in four burglaries. Always secure your doors and windows whenever possible. Outside lighting will make your home less appealing to burglars and draw attention to anyone breaking in. In your absence from home give the impression that it is occupied by using timer switches on internal lights and perhaps leaving a radio on. Check any security you have has passed attack test standards. There are a range of doors, windows, locks and other security items that are available. Seek the advice of your local Crime Reduction Officer. Review your security at least every 12 months. Does it need updating? Are you complying with basic crime reduction advice?
Garden Wise Burglary of garden sheds and theft of garden equipment is one of the fastest growing crimes in the country. Your garden furniture and tools are very saleable items so you must make it as difficult as possible for any would be thief to get to your property. • Good locks should be fitted to shed doors and windows, always use them. • Purchase a shed/garage alarm – available at most DIY stores. • Postcode your property with either an ultra violet pen, permanent marker or by scratching on the details. • Remember to lock all doors and windows when out in the garden, do not make it easy for sneak in thieves. • Detail any particular identification marks on your property including damage marks. • Equipment should never be left unattended.
• Expensive or unusual items of equipment or garden ornaments should be photographed. • Walls, fences and gates should always be kept in good condition. • Illuminate dark areas of your garden where possible. • Screens for thieves to work behind should be avoided, keep hedges, shrubs and large plants cut back. • Plant bushes with thorns, especially under windows. • Gravel pathways or gravel under windows prevent a silent approach. • Neighbourhood Watch would be very beneficial, why not join one in your area or set one up if one doesn’t already exist.

Riverford offers organic Fairtrade pineapple to coincide with Fairtrade Fortnight Organic vegbox company Riverford were offering customers organic Fairtrade pineapple to coincide with Fairtrade Fortnight (28 February-13 March 2011). As well as providing something exotic and tasty for its customers, this will make a real difference to the lives of the African growers. The pineapple, from Togo in West Africa, is grown by a group of farmers who are paid a fair wage and given a guaranteed market for their produce. This helps the farmers; boosting their income and getting their children back into local schools. “We believe in treating our growers and suppliers fairly, whether they are in the UK or
overseas,” says Andrew Wilson, who delivers Riverford boxes in the West Yorkshire Area area. “We’re very excited about selling this pineapple; it’s incredibly sweet and has zero air miles, as we never air freight any of our produce. By buying it, you can make a real difference to the lives of the African growers and their families.” Riverford also offers organic Fairtrade bananas alongside its vegboxes. The bananas are grown by a group of farmers in the Dominican Republic. Riverford’s Fairtrade Pineapple Upside Down Cake
Serves 6 ½ a fresh Fairtrade pineapple, peeled, cored, sliced + cut in semi-circular shapes 75g unsalted butter 200g light brown sugar 275g plain flour + 1 tsp baking powder (or use self-raising flour) pinch salt ¼ tsp freshly grated nutmeg or ground cinnamon 2 eggs, beaten 1 tsp vanilla extract 125ml milk 185g unsalted butter, softened 250g caster or granulated sugar
Preheat the oven to 180˚C. In a saucepan, melt 75g butter. Add the brown sugar and cook for 2 or 3 mins, then pour into a 23-24cm solid based cake tin. Arrange the pineapple slices in a layer over the butter mixture. Mix the flour with the baking powder, salt and nutmeg or cinnamon. In a large bowl beat 185g butter and 250g sugar until light, pale and fluffy. In a small bowl, mix the beaten egg with the vanilla extract and milk. Gradually add the egg mixture to the creamed butter and sugar, stirring, then gently fold in the flour mixture. Pour on top of the pineapple, spreading it evenly. Bake for 35-45 mins, until just firm to the touch. Test by inserting a skewer into the cake. If it comes out clean, it is cooked.

the future in renewable energy Since April 2010 the government has announced the new “Feed-In-Tariffs” which means you will get a guaranteed payment of 41.3p per Kwh for any electric you produce from the solar panels guaranteed for the next 25 years whether you use it yourself or not!
