Treatment review by Angela Riches Of all the treatments I have had, reflexology was not one of them, so when I heard about Calverley Reflexologist Helen Alred, I was keen to try it out and see what benefits were to be gained. As Helen works mobile, and I work very long hours, it was arranged for Helen to come to our office at the end of the working day to do the treatment. Helen arrived complete with a folding treatment chair, which has to be one of the most comfortable I have ever sat in, and everything she needed to carry out the treatment, all condensed into a very neat holdall! First of all Helen wanted to find out about my medical history and lifestyle and we went through a comprehensive questionnaire and then Helen explained to me what Reflexology is, what I could expect to experience and also what after effects and benefits I might have. Helen started with some general relaxation, followed by a precise thumb and
finger walking technique over every part of each foot in turn, toes (even the tips), soles and tops of my feet and ankles, applying pressure to every reflex area in turn. This was never ticklish, however at times I did feel very sleepy and even had to close my eyes for a ‘mini nap’ a couple of times, it was amazing how tender some of the points were and Helen explained which area of the body each point related to that was out of balance – correctly pointing out problems I am experiencing in my back and shoulders. Helen worked on these areas to relieve the issues and explained that I should drink lots of water to flush away the toxins released during the treatment, and that I would probably sleep very deeply that night...correct! I slept like a baby and felt so relaxed and refreshed the next day, it was amazing. Helen also called me the next day to see how I was feeling, a great follow up service, and the whole experience was so rewarding that I will definitely be booking more treatments!

hen two local businesses in Calverley, Salescake and Redvoice, started to do business following a chance meeting through dog walking, it wasn’t long before they were helping others to do the same. Zandra Moore of Salescake said “it is great to do business with people in the same village, there are a large number of business people in Calverley so setting up a network to encourage more local business made sense”. The Calverley Business Network, started in October 2009, is run voluntarily by the cofounders from RedVoice and Salescake. The network meets on the 1st Tuesday of every month at the New Inn on Carr Road in Calverley from 7.30pm onwards. With over 35 members it is a vibrant, informal
business networking event, “It’s the only event I know where doing business is so enjoyable”, says founder Helen West from Redvoice. There are lots of reasons why our members come along; •

Fun and games as MP opens up the Toybox!

hipley MP Phillip Davies opened a new toy shop in Shipley last week (2 July). New Chamber member The Toybox store in the Arndale Centre welcomed excited children at a fun filled launch party with cakes, biscuits, face painting and entertainment.
The official opening is the culmination of months of hard work for shop proprietor Lauren Williams whose long term success is fully supported by the Be Involved mentor programme. Lauren recently registered as a mentee on the Be Involved Mentoring Programme and was successfully matched with her new mentor Susan Mendoza, Centre Manager at Airedale Shopping Centre, Keighley. Lauren has wholeheartedly praised the mentor scheme. She said: “Finding the right mentor wasn’t a hard job thanks to the expertise of the programme coordinator Dena Habashi-Ayub. I have been matched with a fantastic lady who is both dynamic and knowledgeable with a wealth of project management
experience. I now have much more focus and know where I am going. Communication, interaction, listening and believing in yourself with help from a motivated individual will help you every step of the way. I can thoroughly recommend the mentor scheme to anyone starting out in business.” The new store, which has been trading since April, has been welcomed by local shoppers who have seen the centre undergo a major resurgence of activity in recent months. 1) Set Goals Who do I want to meet? Why do I want to meet these people? Where will I meet these people? 2) Carry Business Cards at All Times Your cards should always be to hand everywhere. 3) Take Good Notes on Business Cards It's important to remember what has been said. Take notes on the back of business cards to remember your conversation when you follow up. 4) Be Genuine Always listen, giving eye contact, asking questions and not interrupting. Build trust and a good relationship, and don’t actively sell. 5) Offer to Help Others A networking must. Offer to share resources, make introductions, gather data and perform consulting. By extending yourself to others, you build a reputation as a giver rather than a taker. 6) Follow Up Follow up with people the next day so you're still fresh in their minds. If you offer to help someone - no matter how big or small you need to follow up. 7) Build Relationships You need to continue to build your relationship with people. By reaching out to them, you will come across as genuine and someone who values your relationships. Final Thought By incorporating some or all of the above networking principles, you will be more prepared for events and a truly effective networker! ur field workers sow courgettes in small pots in late March or early April, covered with fleece to protect them from frost. The plants are often flowering within a month, when the covers are removed to allow pollinating insects in. Picking normally begins in mid June, and by July the courgettes are in full swing. Our challenge is to stay on top of the picking and avoid too many over-sized rejects. Courgettes keep best in the bottom of your fridge. They keep their appearance for two weeks or more, but the flavour and nutritional value decline much more quickly. Eat them as soon as possible; old courgettes are tasteless but a really fresh one, straight from the plant, is fantastic. Deep fried courgette flowers, stuffed with ricotta and spinach and eaten in batches as they come out of the pan, are one of the best things on earth, but you’ll need to grow them yourself. We would love to put courgette flowers in our veg boxes, but they are just too delicate to last the journey from the farm. Also, we might accidentally give you an unwelcome freebie… slugs love to curl up and take a snooze in the flowers. Instructions: Line a 20x35cm baking tray with baking paper and preheat the oven to 190ºC. Mix the butter, oil, caster sugar and soft brown sugar together until light and fluffy. Gradually add the beaten eggs, stirring well, and then the milk until mixed thoroughly. Sift the dry ingredients together and fold into the mixture. Stir in the grated courgettes and vanilla. Spoon the mixture carefully into the tin. Bake for about 40 minutes. Cut into squares whilst still warm.
Instructions: Slice the courgettes into ovals about ¾cm thick. In a large pan heat the oil and fry the courgette slices in batches until slightly coloured (don’t put too many in the pan at once or they won’t brown). Add the garlic to the pan and cook with the courgettes for a few minutes. Add the lemon zest, capers and half the chopped dill and cook for about 30 minutes over a medium heat. Season well and sprinkle with vinegar and the remaining dill.
Makes 20 squares 120g butter (softened) 125ml sunflower oil 100g caster sugar 200g soft brown sugar 3 eggs, beaten 130ml milk 350g plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 4 tbsp cocoa powder 450g courgettes, peeled & finely grated 1 tsp vanilla
Serves 6 6 courgettes 3 tbsp olive oil 3 cloves garlic, thinly sliced zest of 2 lemons 1 tbsp dill, chopped 10 capers, chopped 1 tbsp good vinegar salt and pepper
grilled courgette, tomato and bean salad with a basil dressing by Jane Baxter Instructions: Simmer the soaked dried beans in water until tender. Drain, season and dress with 2 tbsp olive oil. Slice the courgettes into ½cm ribbons, brush with olive oil and grill or griddle until tender. Roast the cherry tomatoes in the oven with a little olive oil for 10 mins. Mix the beans, courgettes and cherry tomatoes together in a bowl. Blend the basil, garlic, a large pinch of salt and 100ml extra virgin olive oil in a food processor to make a dressing.
