Message from Inspector Peter Tuff Eccleshill Neighbourhood Policing Team My NPT at Eccleshill want to work as closely as possible with local residents, listen to their concerns and deal with the issues raised. One way of achieving this is to invite local community members to my Neighbourhood Policing Team on joint Police/community patrols to show them the work officers do and get their perspective on safety issues in their local area. If you are interested in joining officers on patrol and seeing first hand some of the local problems that staff face then please contact myself on Bradford 376168. I will speak to you personally and arrange for you to patrol with staff. Should you not be able to go out on patrol but would like a local officer to visit you at home and get an update as to the work we are doing and at the same time they can listen to your problems then please ring the same number. There continues to be a percentage of burglaries which could have been prevented by some very simple preventative measures. This includes not leaving doors and windows open when out of the house. It only takes a few seconds for someone to reach through an open window or walk into your house via an unlocked door, yet the devastating effect having your home entered and property stolen can last for some considerable time. Therefore please remember

6

to lock all doors and widows when out of the house or going to bed. During the day be aware which doors and windows are open. At this time of year be particularly mindful of doors/windows in conservatories and windows near any flat roofs you may have. A few seconds taking these simple precautions can make your home much more secure and prevent you being a victim of crime. Following the success of the open day last year at Eccleshill Police station we will be opening the doors of the station again on Saturday 23rd July. The event will begin at 11am and finish at 3pm. There will be guided tours of the station and talks from Bradford Drugs Team and Public Order Training. This is in addition to numerous other attractions from the police and our partner agencies. Best of all it is all free, so please come on join us. Inspector Peter Tuff

Kathryn Hyde:

My Lighter Life Story My weight journey all started in my late teens, hovering around a healthy 10 stone through my teenage years, I walked everywhere, lived my spare time outdoors and ate normal family meals. But like most young adults I came of drinking and driving age, my spare time was spent socialising in pubs and clubs, and instead of walking everywhere I bought a car and became very lazy. After a few years of watching the scales tip, my confidence fell and I joined a slimming club. I was single at the time and found it easy, I lost 2 stone very quickly....but like most slimming clubs it crept back on, and quickly. When I met my husband I had gone from a size 12 to a 16, and I was bigger than before! He was a non smoker, so I took the opportunity to quit. With that I gained even more weight and as I was happy, I ignored the scales. We dined out and holidayed and had a happy few years, but

inside I was miserable. My wedding day was fantastic, but sadly I was at my heaviest. My wedding dress was a size 18 and on the wedding day I far too big for it and I felt uncomfortable, even had to be squeezed into it. I couldn’t eat my meal or sit properly I was so uncomfortable. I still feel a pang of shame and sadness when I see my wedding pictures. Deciding to start a family I joined a slimming club again, vowing to lose weight for the sake of my children, and I was desperate to have a healthy pregnancy. I again lost 2 stone, though when I got pregnant I was still quite big at 14 stone. I managed to hover around the same weight throughout my pregnancy, but having maternity leave was like opening the fridge to me! Long days alone with a new born baby are hard on someone with food issues; I would eat to fill time. Eat to feel happy, eat to feel good. As my daughter grew, she was

soon old enough to be weaned onto food and I made sure this was healthy. We had active days and went out walking a lot, swimming and spending time outdoors, but I still couldn’t get the weight off. As she became mobile and independent I started to struggle to keep up. I had to do something NOW before I lost these important days in my daughter’s life. At Christmas 2009, I went out for our works Christmas meal. My boss had recently lost quite a bit of weight and I was impressed with how good he looked, he began to tell me about Lighter Life and what it entailed. I was really interested in how the food packs worked, and the counselling sessions. I knew I needed more help than just losing weight, I needed my mind re wiring! For me the problem went deeper, I needed to go back to basics, teach myself to enjoy healthy food, appreciate feeling satisfied and not feel like I had to burst buttons to be satisfied. I basically needed what Lighter Life had to offer. Online I read up on Lighter Life, discovered a session in Shipley with Christine Smith. I emailed her and she called me very quickly, inviting me to a session the following week. It was inspiring, and very informative. My doctor approved of the Lighter Life programme (Programme NOT diet!), and I was ready to start. The first few days were hard to get through, withdrawing from food is tough. Like saying good bye to an old friend! But the massive weight loss makes it so worthwhile. In other slimming classes the first weeks loss is the biggest and it slows right down after week 2, but on Lighter Life it drops off every week and doesn’t slow, it’s amazing. The counselling sessions were tremendous, getting right to the root of my issues with weight and food. It really is the best thing I ever discovered, I feel healthy, I look healthy and I’m confident. It took me 14 weeks to lose my target of 4 stone. I’m 4 weeks into maintaining and I’m still the exact same weight. I see Christine my counsellor every week and I also help out in our Wednesday evening class to keep me involved. I’ve even plucked up courage to start road running, and I’m up to about 6 miles a week! A few years ago I couldn’t run a hundred yards! As well as losing weight, Lighter Life has given me the tools to keep my weight off.

Armour Glaze now has a NEW Installation Division! ocal brothers Nick and Jean Paul, run Armour Glaze, a double glazing repair specialist company. Their family business leads the way in replacing sealed glass double glazing units in either plastic or metal frames, and they can supply the very latest in energy-saving window technology. Plus save you money and give you peace of mind on larger projects such as conservatories and new windows and doors as they now have their own installation division.

L

“There are many other reasons why you might want to call Armour Glaze, apart from having steamed up windows.” says Nick. “You might be bored with your leaded windows and want more light, or you might want to freshen up your front door. Just like the windows, we can change the door panel at a fraction of the cost of a new door.”

Testimonials A customer of Armour Glaze, Ann from Bingley, tells us about her experience. “I called two reputable companies to look at the misted windows in my conservatory, both said the problem could not be fixed and both recommended a new conservatory. After hearing about Armour Glaze, I asked them to take a look. Thank goodness I did, my conservatory now looks as good as new and the cost was over £5,000 cheaper than the nearest quote! I was very happy with their work and thought they were wonderful.” Sue from Gilstead agreed. “I was so happy with the way Armour Glaze transformed my conservatory and bedroom windows that I recommended them to a friend who was also very happy with their work.”

HISTORY OF THE

estling in the Aire Valley, surrounded and sheltered by the hills of the Yorkshire Pennines, Bingley was once a small market town surrounded by fertile agricultural land. This is how it was in 1862 when the local farmers got together and held a ploughing competition - and from these humble beginnings developed one of the finest and largest one day agricultural shows in the North of England.

N

As Bingley has changed from market town to mill town and, more recently to a satellite town to Leeds and Bradford, so the show has changed. In its early days it was held for the benefit of the farming community and is believed to have been held mid week to dissuade non farmers from attending. Then, as the appeal of the show grew domestic pets and flowers joined traditional farm animals and vegetable produce, and the

show became attractive to the whole community. It was still held mid week but as the show fell on the traditional summer Bingley holiday it attracted good crowds. Nowadays holidays tend to be taken any time in the summer months so the show was moved to a Sunday about ten years ago, making the show more convenient for the whole family. Last year, an old statute was unearthed by a private individual dating back to the middle of the 19th century, about the time of the first Bingley show, that forbids the closing of a Park on a Sunday, this put a big threat upon the holding of last year’s show. Fortunately we were allowed to go ahead as we were too far advanced in the planning to change the day from a Sunday. Discussions took place last year and it was decided that moving to the weekend from a

Ticket prices have been held for another year and are £8 for an adult, £5 for children and seniors with a family ticket at £22. Again this year there are discounts of £2 if you purchase your ticket before the day and £4 off the family ticket. Tickets outlets before the day have vastly increased and are shown on the web site www. bingleyshow.co.uk

BINGLEY SHOW

Wednesday had been a success, with increased numbers through the gates, so we must now hold the event on Saturday. Next decision which Saturday? Eventually the 23rd of July was chosen as this was the nearest date to the previous years schedules and did not clash with other major events in the area. Whenever there is change there is a little apprehension, but more shows are held on a Saturday than any other day, and previous changes have not affected the popularity of this grand event. In the not too distant past, the show lost 2 years through Foot and Mouth and another over disputed access when the show was to be held on Wagon Lane. After each set back the show has bounced back and flourished once more. Nowadays, the show is geared for the whole family, for young and old alike, but has remained true to its agricultural and horticultural heritage. The cattle, sheep, goats, poultry and vegetables will all be there in abundance. In addition, there will be the pets - cats, dogs, pigeons, rabbits, cavies, and mice.

and in the handicraft marquee, new digital photography will be alongside the old traditions of jam making and baking. Whatever your age, whatever your fancy there is something for you at this year’s show. For the kids there are the fun fair attractions - the big slides the roundabouts - and the Blackpool donkeys will be back for kids to ride bringing the seaside feeling to Bingley. Then there is the return of Titan the Robot again, this is now a firm favourite of adults and kids and will delight and no doubt frighten, but a spectacle not to be missed. With clowns for the little ones and a stunt motorbike team there is something for all ages. For music lovers The Bradford City Brass Band will be playing in Bottom Meadow, and for the youngsters Pulse Radio will be blasting out their usual pop music, in the top part of the park away from the animals. With over 100 stands, loads of food outlets, and ice cream aplenty and of course more than one watering hole there is everything one needs for a great day out.

Flowers and plants will complement the vegetables in the horticulture marquee,

Guy Watson began farming at Riverford in Devon over 20 years ago. He was an organic vegbox pioneer, giving customers the freshest possible seasonal fruit and veg at a fair price to customers and growers. Many of our customers are as passionate about the business as he is; no-one wanted the business to be largescale. Guy teamed up with ‘sister’ farms who shared his passion and wanted to re-build the connection between grower and consumer. River Nene was the first sister farm in 2005. From Sacrewell Lodge Farm near Peterborough, we deliver to homes throughout the east of England. River Swale followed in 2007, from Home Farm in North Yorkshire. River Swale supplies veg boxes across Yorkshire and the North East. Riverford at Norton has since opened, delivering organic veg to homes around the Hampshire area. Working as a family of farms means we can maintain our commitment to low food miles, local employment and the support of local farmers and keep a close link between grower and consumer.

Warm Your Home the Effective Way this Winter.

furniture in front of them can block a great deal of the heat, making them ineffective. Electric underfloor heating requires no maintenance

B

ased in Bingley, Warmfloors Ltd. are local specialist suppliers and installers of electric underfloor heating throughout the UK. They are a young, pro-active and forward thinking company, originally founded in 2004 by their current directors, who still have a hands on approach today. Electric underfloor heating has mainly been directed at the DIY market, but with the ever increasing legal obligations that need fulfilling during installation, making use of a professional installation service can often avoid the many headaches self installers come across. Underfloor heating provides an ideal

air temperature profile in your room through the correct balance of radiant and convected heat. With traditional heating most of the heat is convected air, which rises making the ceiling a very warm and wasteful place. However 50% of warmth from electric underfloor heating is radiant heat, which is absorbed by the people and objects in the room. Radiators can be an ugly nuisance taking up valuable wall space in a room. They can cause discolouration and peeling of paintwork and wallpaper, and placing

except for an electrical inspection every 10 years which is tied in with domestic electrical inspections. Radiators are considerable dust collectors and give off moisture levels which support dust mites. Electric underfloor heating removes any chance of dust mites with zero moisture content and no dust collection – welcome news for asthma sufferers. No radiators in your home means no risk of injury to little children burning themselves on scorching hot radiators, and bathroom floors are kept dry, reducing the risk of anyone slipping on the tiles. Warmfloors Ltd. are the only ISO9001 supplier and installer of electric underfloor heating in the UK; using Scandinavian cables which come with a lifetime guarantee, and they have already installed hundreds of systems across the country. Warmfloors underfloor is suitable for Karndean, Amtico, tiles, laminates, engineered woods and carpet.
