appy New Year! If you thought 2009 was a hard year, 2010 came in with a vengeance. I doubt that there was any business left unaffected by the weather in the first two weeks of January and the terrible effect it had. Unless you own a gritting company, most businesses were affected and this is even more reason to make sure your business is marketed locally, if seen locally you will be supported locally! I can’t stress strongly enough how we believe that if we all support each other within our local communities during the coming months and throughout this year, we will all hopefully start 2011 with a big smile on our faces. On a lighter note, if 2010 is your year to get fit, lose weight, put your financial affairs in order, buy new furniture, extend or refurbish your home, or even buy a brand new home, then you will find great advice and the best local deals from the advertisers in this magazine. As we go through the year we will include special features on getting married, the perfect holiday destinations, great health and fitness advice, the latest fashion trends and keep you up to date with your favourite local football and rugby teams. Plus we have lots more seasonal features planned with helpful tips and advice to help you make the smart choices when spending your hard earned cash! The next edition for the Leeds/Bradford border distribution will be April/May, when we will be looking forward to spring and all that comes with it; Easter, weddings, holidays and home improvements... would your business benefit from being included in Here & Now? Call us for details of how we can support your business in 2010; Here & Now is still possibly the only local magazine that actually distributes through letterboxes and puts your business directly into the homes of your target market!

Don’t Ignore the Pension D espite it being ten years since the Welfare Reform and Pensions Act 1999 came into force less that 10% of divorce settlements fully consider the accrued pension assets of both spouses. Juliette Kinsey of Kinsey & Co Solicitors explains the different ways pension assets can be brought into the equation when dividing assets between separating couples involved in divorce proceedings. After the equity in the matrimonial home a pension can be the second most valuable capital asset accrued by a married couple and should therefore be taken into account when dividing the assets as a whole. In many cases couples take joint decisions during their marriage regarding their retirement provision. Many couples decide during child raising years that they will continue to pay into one pension fund, usually the husbands, on the basis that the fund will provide a joint income on retirement, whilst the wife will take a career break in order to raise their children. In many cases this leads to the husband having greater pension provision than the wife at the time of separation. However, because for many separating couples retirement seems years away the pension assets accrued during a marriage are often undervalued, misunderstood or in some instances even ignored. This can mean that the party to the marriage who has least pension provision, which is more often than not the wife, can find themselves without a pension and little future prospect of being able to make up the lost years in the future. There are three ways in which the inequality of pension provision can be addressed and without exception before deciding how to proceed both parties should seek expert advice from a family law solicitor as to which option to take.

Offsetting:

Pension Sharing:

Offsetting a pension entitlement in effect means addressing the pension imbalance between the parties by an unequal division or apportionment of other matrimonial assets. The most common example of this would be whereby the wife would receive a greater share of the proceeds of sale of the former matrimonial home in return for the husband retaining his pension. In order to determine how much more equity should the wife receive a proper valuation of the pension should be obtained and both parties should seek specialist family law advice.

The purpose of the 1999 legislation was to enable the courts to address the imbalance of pension provision by awarding the spouse with least pension rights a share of the pension fund held by the other spouse, often the husband. This process overcame many of the disadvantages of earmarking and allowed a share of the husbands’ pension to be transferred into the sole name of the wife thereby enabling her to decide when she would like to retire and equally in many cases pass the benefits of the fund on to surviving children in the event of death before retirement. Pensions are complicated at the best of times. There are many different ways to value pensions and indeed many different types of pension plans. Occupational pension schemes such as the NHS, Teachers Pensions or Police pensions present further challenges. Therefore anybody involved in divorce where pensions are an issue should seek specialist family law advice.

Earmarking: Earmarking a pension requires the court to make an order whereby a percentage of the income received on retirement by the spouse with the pension rights should be paid directly to the spouse who does not have the pension. Whilst at first glance this seems a sensible approach in reality it has tremendous disadvantages such as the fact that no income will be received by the spouse if the pension holder dies or if the spouse entitled the earmarking provision remarries. Once again it is important that proper family law advice is received before making a decision as to how to address the issue of pensions in divorce cases.

If you would like further advice regarding pensions on divorce or matrimonial and separation issues generally please contact Juliette Kinsey on 01274 589900 to make an appointment or visit www.kinseysolicitors.co.uk to find out more.

ndrea Hanson was only 29 when she lost her battle against skin cancer in June last year. It was Andrea’s wish to thank Bradford Cancer Support (BCS) for the help she had received. A collection was held at her funeral and family and friends got involved in various fundraising activities. Andrea had worked for Grattan and an application for match funding from the company’s charitable trust was successful. On December 22nd Andrea’s parents and her son handed over a cheque for £19,105 to BCS Community Fundraiser, Linda Enderby almost a year to the day that Andrea had told her parents that her cancer was terminal. Bob and Loraine said “It is quite a strange time of year for us because it brings back so many memories but people at Bradford Cancer Support are always around to help. Marathon Man: John Baldock

L

ocal man, John Baldock, also known by many of his family and friends as ‘JB’, is running the 2010 London Marathon on 25th April, raising awareness and money for the charity British Lung Foundation in memory of his mother, who sadly passed away three years ago from a lung disorder. John began running as a hobby over ten years ago and entered the BUPA Great North Run for the first time in 1997, taking part again in 1998, and continuing to run until his mother became ill and needed round the clock care. He then realised how precious time was and gave up his running to spend that precious time with his mum. After his mum passed away, John found himself with time on his hands and after a prompt from his wife and friends he began to run once more, and to pursue his ambition to compete in the London Marathon. John was eventually accepted this year. Realising the amount of dedicated

training required for the marathon, John has joined the local running club, Idle Athletics Club (Idle AC), who help with his training as he attends three sessions weekly. This will be John’s first marathon; however he has entered and competed in many races and fun events over the last three years. He completed the BUPA Great North Run in 2008 and 2009, and had a fun day out completing the Pants in the Park Race in Roundhay Park, Leeds, where all runners wore their underwear on the outside! John told us: “If anyone would like to sponsor me and help to raise much needed funds for such a worthy charity as The British Lung Foundation, they can do so on www.virginmoneygiving.com/ johnbaldockinlondon and www.justgiving. com/john-baldock. I would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Idle AC, Pure Gym in Leeds and for the support of all my family and friends.” Good luck in your training John!

here are not many businesses that are breaking records at the moment but United Carpets in Shipley are certainly bucking the trend with their success. Owner Adrian Lee told us that much of this success is down to the fact that United Carpets as a whole are the UK’s fastest growing carpet retailer, with unrivalled buying power and this means that each store can offer the largest selection of carpet and flooring at unbeatable prices! Adrian is confident that with discounts and offers, which cannot and will not be matched by anyone else in the area, and the extensive choice in flooring and beds on offer at his Shipley store, he has got something to suit anyone’s pocket. However, Adrian wants his customers to know that such a vast range of products, at brilliant prices, does not mean that there has been a compromise on quality. fluid WINter is here, and just like us, our pets can suffer from Articular arthritis. It is a common problem in pets and may initially go cartilage unnoticed as it is often gradual in onset. It is usually worse in the colder months, causing a variety of symptoms including Healthy synovial joint with pain, stiffness – particularly after rest, and reluctance to play. smooth articular cartilage the joints permitting free movements are called synovial joints. A healthy joint has a smooth layer of articular cartilage covering Osteophyte the ends of the bones and is lubricated by synovial fluid produced (new bone) by the synovial membrane, allowing friction free movement. Painful Arthritic joints typically show a progressive breakdown and swollen joint thinning of the articular cartilage. As the cartilage wears, so capsule pets suffer from pain and inflammation of the Damaged joint. On x-rays, new bone can often be seen articular cartilage around the affected joint. there are several possible causes of arthritis: Arthritic synovial joint with the commonest is a lifetime of activity, simply damaged articular cartilage resulting in wear and tear on the joints. If you are worried that your pet may have arthritis, please come and see us for a check-up!

Feline Leukaemia Virus – is your cat vaccinated? DiD yOu know that Feline Leukaemia Virus infection is one of the commonest causes of premature death in cats? The virus is found in the saliva of infected cats and is mainly spread by direct contact of one cat with another – usually licking or biting. Although the virus can cause true leukaemia, on many occasions the effects are more related to suppression of the cat’s immune system – leaving it fatally exposed to infections that a healthy cat would normally recover from. The disease is however unrelated to any human condition and quite specific to cats. The good news is that there is a very effective vaccine, giving cats protection against this deadly disease. West Yorkshire Police

N

by Inspector Peter Tuff

PT officers are now mixing the old with the new in order to make your communities a safer place to live in. The old is more police officers walking their beats, which in recent years had declined. The new is the introduction of handheld computers intended to maximise the time they can spend on the streets fighting crime and disorder. Work is currently ongoing across West Yorkshire Police to upgrade all of the mobile phone sized ‘mobile data devices’ to display electronic stop and search forms in the latest update, freeing officers from the time consuming process of filling in paper equivalents. This will save 33,000 hours annually of officers spending time in stations completing paperwork. They also allow officers to access the very latest intelligence and information while on patrol - such as fresh details about crimes, newly uploaded photos of suspects and much more. It is believed giving them finger tip access to such information while on the streets will continue to make it harder for suspects to

36

Homes & Gardens

avoid arrest or to try and mislead officers if they have committed an offence. This will allow officers to spend ever increasing amounts of time in the places where residents want to see them, namely on the streets fighting crime. Ch.Insp Steve Thomas, who is leading the project, said: “As the force progresses with the project the idea is that the devices will become ‘an office in the palm of your hand’ making this investment in technology a real investment in improving efficiency and improving our ability to fight crime. “They might look like mobile phones but these devices are actually 21st century policing tools for which the force has received national acclaim at the British Computer Society awards,” he added. Speaking of behalf of all NPT Inspectors, we want to know your concerns so that our officers can tackle the issues that matter to you. Please make contact with us whether it be by email, letter, visiting a police station, attending the monthly PACT meeting held in every area, or stopping and speaking to your local officer whilst they are on foot patrolling your streets.

Fundraiser a massive success for Whitehaven

E

ngage Super League Champions Leeds Rhinos were the guests of honour at a fundraising dinner in Whitehaven ahead of their final preseason game and they were given a massive welcome by the Cumbrian audience. Over 200 guests joined the team and coaching staff along with Whitehaven coach Ged Stokes at the dinner with an auction and raffle raising funds to help Whitehaven with their plans for the new season and their long term dream of earning a place in Super League. Stokes praised the Leeds Rhinos players and the Club for their support of his club as part of a pre-season trip to Cumbria. Speaking at the dinner Stokes said, “I can’t praise the Leeds organization enough. The players are an absolute credit to the club. We are proud to be in partnership with them and I am sure there is

lots we can work on and learn about.” Leeds Rhinos skipper Kevin Sinfield said he and his team mates were made to feel like superstars on their visit to Whitehaven. After training at the Recreation Ground on Saturday, the team met nearly a hundred youngsters as part of a training session before going on a walk about the harbour at Whitehaven. Commenting at the dinner Sinfield said: “It was great to walk about Whitehaven and see the passion that people have for Rugby League. We felt like Premiership footballers, everyone kept coming up to us and asking us for autographs and we were more than happy to accommodate them.”

BY STUART DUFFY

Optimism in the Air at the Grattan Stadium

T

here is a marked air of optimism at the Grattan Stadium as the season gets closer. After underachieving for most of 2009, the Bulls finished the season in fine style, winning six of their last seven games and coming within a whisker of making the play offs. That they finished in ninth place, their lowest in Super League history, was a great disappointment for everyone at the club but hard work behind the scenes has seen a stronger squad assembled. Leading the new recruits is former Manly Captain Matt Orford. Matt was the outstanding player in the NRL in 2008, winning the Golden Boot Award and leading the Sea Eagles to success in the Grand Final. His signing by the Bulls is a major coup and his organisational skills and will to win attitude will quickly make the ‘OX’ a fans favourite, particularly if he can show the skills he produced when Manly defeated Leeds Rhinos in last season’s World Club Challenge. Joining him are two of his former Manly colleagues, Forward Glenn Hall and Hooker Heath L’Estrange. Both played in that 2008 Grand Final victory over Leeds and are coming to England in the prime of their careers. Hall is the sort of no nonsense hard working forward the Bulls have thrived on – another former Manly player Danny Gartner being a good example – and his ability to play either Prop or Second Row will enhance his value.

L’Estrange has all the skills from Dummy Half and his knowledge of Matt Orford’s game should be a big plus for the Bulls. He is quick with a great passing game and his support play is second to none. With Steve Menzies already in his second season at the club, the Manly connection is even stronger and it’s hard to see the four of them not having a big influence on everything the Bulls do in 2010. The other overseas recruit sees Brett Kearney arrive from Cronulla Sharks. Kearney is blessed with blistering pace and can play in either Half Back role or at Full Back. Steve McNamara has earmarked him for the Stand Off berth and he is looking forward to striking up a partnership with Matt Orford, with whom he grew up on the Central Coast. Of the other two new recruits one needs no introduction! Stuart Reardon rejoins the Bulls after leaving for Warrington at the end of 2005. His time there has been disrupted by injuries but when fully fit he is a tremendous asset and was described by Paul Cullen as the ‘best ball returner in the competition’. Now fully fit, he has settled in well and will fill the left wing spot this time. Danny Sculthorpe was the Bulls last pre-season signing. Blessed with all the skills, he spent the end of last season on loan at Huddersfield, where he impressed Giants Coach Nathan Brown enough for him to want to make the deal permanent but decided to throw his lot in with

Steve McNamara’s plans for the Bulls. The optimism is further fuelled by the fact that some of the club’s promising young players will be another year older and more experienced. James Donaldson, Elliott Whitehead and Tom Olbison all played last season and will feature more regularly this term. Half Back or Loose Forward Danny Addy has impressed in pre season and Burgess twins, Tom and George, together with Joe Wardle and 16-year-old Hooker Adam O’Brien have all been given squad numbers and are training full time with the squad. There have been changes too in Steve McNamara’s backroom team with experienced Sports Science expert Geoff Evans assuming the newly created role of Head of Physical Performance. He has worked extensively in Soccer, Rugby League and Union and has already made his mark with the players. At the beginning of January the club moved its training to the new purpose-built, state-of-the-art facility at Tong School and, whilst the benefits of that are more long term, the facility has already created a massive impression with the new players in the squad.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

W

ell at the time of writing this article we still have Stuart McCall as manager of our team, however you could say the wheels have come well and truly off. Stuart’s latest excuse in a long line of excuses is the players are anxious! Too right they are but are they as anxious as the diehard fans who see their team spiralling down the league with no signs of being able to halt it. One fan joked after the four postponed games that it was nice to remain unbeaten in January, however that didn’t last as successive away games at Bury and Lincoln ended in a 2-1 scoreline to the opposition. Of course the referee and many other factors were to blame and it’s becoming quite comical now to listen to post match interviews for the latest assessment of why we didn’t get a result. The freezing period brought back memories for myself and other older fans of the winter of 1962/63 when Bradford City played a game on the 22nd of December against Barrow after which then didn’t play again until Thursday March the 7th. Then followed a run of 23 games up to the end of the season which ended on the 17th May. That first game after the enforced lay off was postponed 13 times and was an FA Cup 3rd round tie against Newcastle Utd which City lost 6-1 at Valley Parade. It was a sight to behold as a 10 year old stood on the old Kop and observing a sea of black and white as the Newcastle fans arrived in their thousands. Perhaps they thought they would win the cup that year, well nothing changes for the Geordies does it, they always think they can win things however their last major trophy was in 1955. The games at home over the Christmas period saw fans pitching in with snow shovelling so the games could go ahead, some

40

Sport & Motoring

fans however may have wondered why they had bothered as the efforts on the field of play certainly didn’t match those efforts by the many fans who ensured the games would proceed. A special mention must go to the groundstaff at VP for all their efforts around this period, well done lads. So after the cold spell and 4 postponed games the Shipley Bantams finally took to the road again, the attached picture shows 2 of the younger members in fine spirits as we arrive at Sincil Bank Lincoln. I wonder in young Matthew and Aiden will be as happy on the Torquay run? Moving on to off the field activities the Shipley Bantams held a function for the Bradford Burns Unit 25 year Memorial Fund at the Shipley Club and raised a total of £322 which will be added to the amount already raised which is well over £30,000 now. At this event we presented a cheque

to Mrs Brenda Doyle the community fund raising manager of the Marie Curie Hospice in Bradford for £817.71 which was raised in memory of our late friend and Shippers member Stuart Hardy. Stuart’s brother and niece presented the cheque on behalf of the Shipley Bantams. So what will the rest of this season hold for Bradford City? Many fans are beginning to doubt City legend Andrew Stuart Murray McCall’s management skills who after a very successful playing career which saw him play 763 games for City, Everton, Rangers, Sheffield Utd and 40 games on the international stage for Scotland is failing to be as successful in the management role as he was in a player role. Whatever the future for Stuart we all know we shall still be cheering on the Bantams wherever the fixture list takes us. Just as long as that fixture list isn’t The Blue Square League! Heaven forbid that happening, thank goodness for Darlington and Grimsby.

BY PAUL DEWES

Leeds take on the Big Teams and the Big “C”

L

eeds United hit the headlines in January for what was described as one of the biggest FA Cup shocks in recent years. While that wasn’t quite the feeling at Elland Road, there was no hiding the delight after recording a first win in 29 years at Manchester United when a Jermaine Beckford goal fired Leeds to victory at Old Trafford. “It was a fantastic experience going there,” said delighted Leeds manager Simon Grayson. “We played well, the players did what they were asked, and it was a fantastic day for this football club. No one expected us to win on this stage except perhaps 9,000 Leeds fans and the players and us in the dressing room. “We said that someone could be a hero and Becks came up with the goal. It was a great ball in from Jonny Howson and it was almost slow motion watching it go in. Maybe we didn’t kill the game off and we rode our luck at times, but you expect that when you are playing against the Premier League champions. “We’ve been like that all season, hard to beat, and a threat with the ball. We said in the build-up the players would sink or swim and they came out with plenty of credit. They can draw on that now and go on from there. “Overall it was a great day for the club. We’ve done something which everyone can be immensely proud of.”

Leeds followed that by securing a 2-2 draw at Tottenham in the fourth round of the competition when Beckford was again on target, twice, at White Hart Lane. A ground-breaking partnership between a cancer charity and Leeds United was unveiled at Thorp Arch in January. Yorkshire Cancer Research, the UK’s biggest regional cancer research charity, has agreed a three-year arrangement with League One leaders Leeds United. The link-up is thought to be unique in that the charity will work through a football club to reach its male fans in a bid to raise awareness of cancers that affect men. Under the platform: “Cancer. Let’s tackle it”, Yorkshire Cancer Research will focus on cancers of the prostate, testicle, bowel and lung. The first practical example of the linkup will come before Leeds United’s home game with Colchester United on Saturday, January 30 when a Stop Smoking/Lung Capacity Test “clinic” for fans will take place next to the Billy Bremner statue between 12.30 and 2.30pm. The session will be run in conjunction with the Leeds NHS Trust. Smoking accounts for 90 per cent of all lung cancers in men and 83 per cent of lung cancers in women. Half of all smokers die of cancer or a smoking-related disease.

Clair Chadwick of Yorkshire Cancer Research said: “It’s widely recognised that many men can go into denial if they suspect something may be wrong with them. This often contrasts sharply with the way women approach such perceived problems. “This partnership is designed to give male fans more of an idea of the kinds of signs that could indicate the presence of cancer and to encourage them to seek help.” Case studies and cancer fact files will appear in United’s match day programme and club magazine for the duration of the partnership. Key messages will be broadcast on the big screen on match days and perimeter advertising and posters will be sited around the ground. Clair Chadwick said: “We also hope to encourage fans to take part in fundraising events. The sad fact is that many Leeds United fans will have cancer at some point in their lives. By raising money for research now, we increase the chances of developing new treatments in the future.” United’s CEO, Shaun Harvey, said: “Sadly, cancer is something that has touched most people and by forming a partnership with YCR, we hope through our relationship we can raise awareness and funds to help with the fight against this.”

Specialities

Tandoori and Grills Freshly prepared and served with Salad and Chutney.

This method of cooking is an ancient art, handed down through many generations and a speciality of our chef. All tandoori dishes are cooked over charcoal in individual portions in a traditional oven made of special clay. Only natural ingredients are used with little or no fat oil (dieters need not be concerned) therefore the full flavour of the meat and the spices are retained for your enjoyment. Tandoori dishes are brought to the table sizzling. Tandoori Naans and Curry Sauce are recommended with these dishes.
