on’t let injuries and pain problems get you down, you don’t have to suffer. Get immediate relief with an effective array of specific soft tissue techniques designed to get to the root of the problem. Read on to find out first hand why Jayne Harris of Touched Therapies in Bingley, is regarded as possibly the best massage therapist in the area, and how she can help you get the results you’re looking for and provide you with your best massage therapy experience yet! Massage is recommended for those with chronic pain, headaches, backaches, or injuries such as whiplash, frozen shoulder, or tennis elbow, and Jayne is one of the few with a reputation for meeting your unique needs and making sure that every client leaves feeling relaxed and in tune with their bodies, through her No Hands ® Massage technique.

client. For this reason it is called ‘The Gentle Giant of Massage’ and is now the massage of choice for the majority of massage therapists. “My clients feel that with a No Hands® Massage experience, they are able to let go, to feel, to breathe, to loosen up and to connect, no matter how stressed or wound up they were before the treatment. This is far more than ‘just a massage’. “ Jayne has also perfected other therapies such as Reflexology, Indian Head Massage, Hopi Ear Candles, Reiki and Aromatherapy, all of which complement perfectly the No Hands ® Massage technique. Specialising in first time clients, Jayne knows that getting your initial massage can be a little stressful and her warm personal approach and positive caring nature will put you instantly at ease.

Testimonials Jayne always puts her clients first and is very proud that her technique has helped so many people and made a notable positive difference in their lives. Jayne has trained at some of the best massage schools in England and with a record of proven results, here is what some of her clients have to say about their experiences: “As a sufferer for 15 years of osteoarthritis with hyper mobile joints and associated conditions, I have found combining regular Reflexology and No Hands® Massage has greatly improved my aches, pains, inflammation and spinal misalignment problems. Several years of Chiropractic treatment, although beneficial, did not provide such effective overall health maintenance. I am happy to report I have not suffered from my usual episodes of twisted vertebrae or pelvis, which used to be a common occurrence, prior to starting these treatments. Other areas of concern have been highlighted during the sessions and been effectively dealt with including an ongoing sinus problem. As manager of a busy health food store, I have since recommended Jayne to several of my customers, family members, and friends, all of whom have experienced relief, as a result.” Margaret Boyd, Health Food Store Manager, Keighley, West Yorkshire

Jayne Harris of Touched Therapies Jayne explains: “My greatest strength is being a ‘gentle giant’ by the massage I provide. No Hands ® Massage is the deepest, gentlest, safest touch that works on every level. “I literally do not use my hands. The majority of treatments are done with the soft surfaces of my forearms, and, being properly trained in how to use my body weight effectively, enables me to go far deeper and at the same time provide a more relaxing massage than using conventional massage techniques - which can be invasive or intrusive for the first time

Jayne often recommends certain treatment types for particular ailments and I find her knowledgeable and helpful. I heartily recommend Jayne for all ages.” Audrey Simpson, Keighley, West Yorkshire “My list of problems seemed endless! What does

Christmas mean to you?

W

hatever our personal and religious beliefs about this time of year, we can’t really avoid it. From September onwards, we have shops full of tinsel, gifts, shiny paper, rich food, and it all builds up. There is muzak playing everywhere we go, and as Christmas gets closer the crowds and pressure seem to build to fever pitch. In October, I overheard a conversation in the train: “So what are you getting for Christmas?” This was addressed to an adult, not a child! It all seems to be about getting, everyone wants to be getting something bigger, better, more expensive and this will fulfil what purpose? To be able to tell people afterwards “I got the latest and most expensive multipurpose, swivel headed dancing motor bike, with pink fur trim!”? And then of course: “I just had to have a new leather outfit to go with it, decorated with diamante and chains, not to mention my new crash helmet complete with on board hi-fi, in day-glo purple.” If you have a personal and spiritual meaning for this period of year that uplifts and fulfils you, then you are fortunate. For many of us Christmas means an underlying stress and anxiety about how to pay the bills, or what will happen when dear old auntie Gladys gets together again with long-lost cousin Fred, and the drunken fallout that will ensue. Or disappointed children who wanted something we can’t afford or we bought it and now wonder how on earth we will pay off the credit card bills in the New Year. Perhaps you are the person who just loves the shopping, partying, new clothes, gift wrapping, cooking for hours and hours, and having time with friends and family. You may be stretched to your limits, but the excitement and buzz for you are also a form of stress. Or maybe your heart sinks at the thought of it all. Crowds, late night shopping, ‘festive’ items that we didn’t know we needed, let alone can afford. Do you lie in bed at night worrying about how you will manage to do everything, and how can you pay for what everyone wants? Just the season itself can be hard for some people, with the lack of daylight, the colder weather, which means that people tend to stay indoors more. So you may be feeling really isolated and cut off from social contacts. The images of happy families can stir up happy memories now long gone, or remind you

of personal losses, pains or bereavements. Depression and anxiety can become worse. Family tensions can increase, and the level of relationship breakdown rises at this time of year. So instead of peace and goodwill, tensions can rise, families fall out with each other, and stress levels spiral. Common ways of dealing with the stress now is to put it off till the New Year, and in the meantime overindulge in rich foods, alcohol, caffeine and nicotine. How can we manage it better for the sake of our sanity and health? Caffeine is a stimulant that causes the body to increase adrenalin levels, so we think that we

Body & Soul

• Ask yourself: do you really have to do things the way they have been done in the past? • Action lists – write down everything you need to do, and do the most important things first. • Breathe – when you feel under pressure, stop, take a gentle deep breath into your stomach, as you let it out, think to yourself “Relax….” • Be thankful for what you do have. • Communicate – what help you need, how you are feeling.

have more energy and ‘get up and go’. We won’t sleep so well and will then wake up needing another ‘fix’ to get going. This cycle continues, but lack of sleep and stress hormones will have a detrimental effect on our health in the long run. Overindulging in rich food will increase our weight, and put a strain on the heart and liver. Smoking can be a challenge to give up, as it becomes so much a part of life, and can be seen as a way of unwinding. So even if you really enjoy it, think about reducing and giving up. The big one at Christmas with all the parties is alcohol. This is a huge issue so all I will say is think about it carefully, will you really be less happy and enjoy your party less if you reduce your alcohol a bit? Alternate a soft drink with alcohol? Peer pressure can be hard to withstand. But when it comes down to it, who is in charge of your life? If you have a serious problem, there is help available, ask your doctor.

Some ideas that might help you emerge the other side in January, less stressed and in better shape:

• Donate something lifesaving – you can make a gift of water, a goat or a pig, to a third world family, through different charities. • Drink plenty of water, this well help your body to clear out stress and other toxins. • Exercise – keep moving, you don’t have to go the gym, walk more, and take the stairs. • Food – do you really need to consume at one meal what would normally last for a couple of days? • Finances – make a budget, and stick to it. • Go out of the room – when things get tense, take a break from it all. Help someone else – who may be lonely or isolated.

to find the perfect tenant the perfect home

J

on Huby from Calverley, gave up a full time career in September this year to pursue his business idea in residential lettings and management, along with his fiancée. After many years in corporate sales and account management, dealing with large multinational companies Jon was faced with the threat of possible redundancy in autumn last year. He looked at many career and employment options, paying particular interest to the residential lettings and management areas of the property market. Through extensive due diligence within the industry Jon found there was a demand for an agent who could provide outstanding customer service, in what is a largely unregulated market. Jon wanted to stand head and shoulders above his competitors from the beginning, so contacted the Guild of Letting & Management (GLM) and The National Approved Letting Scheme (NALS), for advice and feedback on his research. This led him to complete the BTEC National Diploma in Letting and Management to acquire knowledge and understanding of the current regulations and requirements of the letting industry. Gaining NALS accreditation reflects the strict and correct processes and procedures his company adheres to when dealing with tenants and landlords. With everything in place, Jon decided on the name Lets Go Professional Ltd. It reflects how the company operates and who it deals with. The mission is “to find the perfect tenant the perfect home and provide a perfect service to all our customers”. “Our aim is to make the letting process simple and efficient for both tenants and landlords alike. Our

website reflects this and is a great source of information on our services and how we can help with the time consuming search for that perfect home. Whether you are a single person, a family or a large corporate organisation seeking rental accommodation for their employees Lets Go Professional can find a home to suit.” Jon Huby (Director) Upholding the company ethos, Jon likes to meet customers face to face to fully understand each person’s individual needs and wants. This enables him to explain how Lets Go Professional can help the customers, making the whole letting or rental process seamless and stress free. Need rental accommodation sourcing or managing? Look no further than Lets Go Professional Ltd; the perfect partner providing the perfect service.

as when you pay her a visit, you immediately realise that the cakes she creates are individual, imaginative and very special! This, coupled with her one to one personal service and passion to create something unique, is the reason why Cakecraft has so many loyal customers, and why it has been able to outlast many of its competitors. In her own words: “There are thousands

of design ideas that I can create to reflect each individual’s personality and event, whether it is a wedding, a milestone birthday, baby shower, christening or celebration of any kind, and I love being able to be part of an occasion by providing a unique, well made, delicious cake. The only limitation is imagination and budget!” Many is the time that Carole has had to come to the rescue of someone who has ordered a cake through the internet or a large, impersonal catering company. Sometimes a cake has arrived damaged, the wrong colour or design and some customers have even been told that their cake will not arrive in time for their celebration and any of these can have a devastating effect and ruin any occasion. Carole’s passion and skills always save the day! Cakecraft’s dependable, reliable and professional service is evident in the many thank you cards and testimonials displayed in her shop. The fact that you can see her hard at work creating each dream cake whenever you pay her a visit, shows just how popular her services are. Plus the smell of cakes baking just makes your mouth water! It pays to use independent local businesses first time, every time!

BEEF & CHESTNUT CASSEROLE

Ingredients: • 450g/1lb lean boneless shin, stewing or braising beef, cut into 2.5cm/1inch cubes • 30ml/2tbsp plain flour seasoned with salt and freshly milled black pepper and • 10ml/2tsp ground nutmeg • 20ml/2tsp oil • 8 shallots, peeled and left whole • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 175g/6oz baby carrots, topped and left whole

Mouth Watering Winter Recipes ROAST TURKEY Ingredients: 1 Fresh turkey, or frozen turkey, defrosted 1 x 454g pack Fresh Sausagemeat Melted butter or vegetable oil Streaky bacon rashers Salt and freshly ground black pepper Approximately 425ml (¾ pint) water 1 medium onion 1 carrot, quartered 1 bayleaf 6 black peppercorns 3tbsp plain flour, mixed to a smooth paste with cold water Turkey Bacofoil

Method 1. Remove the giblets from the neck flap and the neck from the main cavity. Wash the turkey inside and out and pat dry with kitchen towel. 2. Loosen the skin at the neck end and remove the wishbone with a small, sharp knife to make carving easier. Spoon the sausagemeat into the neck end, between the skin and breast, then tidy the neck skin by tucking it under the turkey to form a tight seal. Secure with a cocktail stick. Any

leftover sausagemeat can be rolled into small balls and cooked separately. Weigh the turkey with the stuffing and calculate the cooking time, based on 45 minutes per kg, plus 20 minutes. 3. Place the turkey on a wire rack which will fit into a large roasting tin. Brush liberally with melted butter or oil, then cover the breast with the bacon and season well with salt and pepper. 4. Pour the water into the roasting tin, add the onion, carrot, bayleaf, peppercorns and a little salt. Put the turkey on the rack over the roasting tin, cover loosely with Turkey Bacofoil and then place in a preheated oven 180ºC, gas mark 4, for the calculated time. 5. Baste the turkey during cooking and add extra water if necessary. Remove the foil for the last 30 minutes of cooking if the turkey has not browned. Check that it is cooked by piercing the thickest part of the thigh with a skewer. When the juices run clear the turkey is ready. 6. Prepare the gravy by straining the liquid from the roasting tin through a sieve into a saucepan. Stir in the flour paste, bring to a boil and cook for one minute stirring continuously until thickened. Taste to check the seasoning, then keep warm until needed.

Don’t forget all these ingredients can be bought from Roy Dykes Butchers (Unit 19) and Market Fruits (Unit 6&7).

18

Keighley Market

• 4 tomatoes, skinned, deseeded and roughly chopped • Grated zest of 1 lemon • 450ml/¾pint good, hot beef stock • 200ml/7floz good red wine • 15ml/1tbsp fresh thyme leaves • 200g/7oz cooked and peeled whole chestnuts

Method: 1. Preheat the oven to Gas mark 3,170°C,325°F. 2. Place the flour, seasoning and nutmeg into a large plastic food bag. Add the beef in batches and coat with the seasoned flour. 3. Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan and cook the beef for 4-5 minutes until brown on all sides. Transfer to a 1.2L/2pint ovenproof casserole dish. 4. In the same frying pan cook the shallots, garlic and carrots for 2-3 minutes. Spoon into the casserole dish with the tomatoes. 5. Add the remaining ingredients to the casserole dish, bring to the boil, cover and transfer to the oven to cook for 1½-2 hours. 6. Serve with mustard mash. Restaurant Review

The Balti House Restaurant W

hether you want to eat in or get a takeaway, for a true Balti dining experience, it has to be the Balti House in Baildon! This is a real treat for lovers of traditional Punjabi cooking but it’s not all about the food – if you choose to eat in, it’s about the whole experience and Balti House provides a really unique dining experience. Set in a 17th century cottage on Browgate, the main road through Baildon, with parking available on the road or directly opposite in a large car park, this is a really easy restaurant to find. The quaint frontage to The Balti House has recently been re-decorated and looks even more inviting. However, if you still haven’t been there you will be completely charmed by the welcome and the period features that await you inside. There are beautiful exposed beams and creaking floorboards; this restaurant has a deceptively large upper floor where there’s room for any number of people to dine together, while downstairs there is a small bar with a more intimate dining area, ideal for a group who want to be a little more private.

Being a traditional Balti restaurant, there is no alcohol for sale but diners are welcome to bring their own, which many do, so don’t be caught out if you like an alcoholic beverage with your meal. It may seem strange to see people coming in carrying a bottle of wine or a carrier bag of beer, but what a great idea; you get to drink exactly what you want and not have to pay restaurant prices or corkage. Another reason why this restaurant is so popular! Soft drinks are available. Balti food is very colourful, aromatic and flavoursome, cooked and served in traditional heavy cast iron woks. The beauty of this is that all flavours are captured and you don’t lose any of the taste on transfer to plates. Ideally, the food should be eaten without cutlery, scooped up with Naan or Chapatti bread, but cutlery is on hand if you prefer. The menus here are extensive, so take a while to study all that is on offer. If you are eating in, then the pace is laid back and relaxed with attention to detail and customer service, you never feel rushed and many make a full evening of their

experience, taking time to really enjoy the food and the company they are with. Takeaways are also very popular at The Balti House and they deliver to all surrounding areas, not only to homes in Baildon. Again the menu is extensive so it’s a good idea to make sure you have a menu to hand. If there are a few of you ordering it’s also advisable to order a selection of dishes so that you can all try each dish and find your real favourites for next time. With the festive season looming you might also want to consider The Balti House for your parties and celebrations as Christmas bookings are now being taken. Don’t wait until Christmas to try this great restaurant though, it’s too good to wait so long and is such good value we are sure it will become one of your regular favourites!

The Christmas Panto

S

tudents in drama classes at The May School of Dance and Theatre Arts are currently working hard towards their Christmas pantomime, Cinderella, under the expert guidance of Sara Comforth. Sara trained at Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London and since graduating in 2002, Sara has performed in various professional productions, short films and radio plays. A qualified drama teacher, Sara teaches at The May School of Dance every Tuesday evening, the classes consist of improvisational workshops as well as script based plays. In the past students have been involved in drama evenings, the major summer production at Bingley Arts Centre and of course the Christmas Pantomime, this gives parents, family and friends the chance to see what the students have been working towards and how they have progressed. Sara told us, “Drama is excellent for confidence building, developing social and reading skills and as well as teaching them to interact with all ages, drama is fun!” If you have always imagined yourself ‘treading the boards’ but never had the opportunity, why not take advantage of the one month free trial that is available at The May School of Dance for all new pupils. Just cut out the voucher on this page and mention the offer when you call to book. Drama classes are open to pupils from the age of 5 years and older, adults don’t rule yourself out you could realise a dream and unleash the thespian in you that’s been hiding away! If dance is more to your liking then why not try out the adult jazz and tap classes on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays; the same free month trial is available on these classes for all new pupils. Adult jazz and tap are not only tremendous fun and a great way to make new friends, you get fit and will also find you are burning those calories too which will help you look and feel amazing, a bonus with the Christmas season approaching!

Don’t Ignore the Pension D espite it being ten years since the Welfare Reform and Pensions Act 1999 came into force less that 10% of divorce settlements fully consider the accrued pension assets of both spouses. Juliette Kinsey of Kinsey & Co Solicitors explains the different ways pension assets can be brought into the equation when dividing assets between separating couples involved in divorce proceedings. After the equity in the matrimonial home a pension can be the second most valuable capital asset accrued by a married couple and should therefore be taken into account when dividing the assets as a whole. In many cases couples take joint decisions during their marriage regarding their retirement provision. Many couples decide during child raising years that they will continue to pay into one pension fund, usually the husbands, on the basis that the fund will provide a joint income on retirement, whilst the wife will take a career break in order to raise their children. In many cases this leads to the husband having greater pension provision than the wife at the time of separation. However, because for many separating couples retirement seems years away the pension assets accrued during a marriage are often undervalued, misunderstood or in some instances even ignored. This can mean that the party to the marriage who has least pension provision, which is more often than not the wife, can find themselves without a pension and little future prospect of being able to make up the lost years in the future. There are three ways in which the inequality of pension provision can be addressed and without exception before deciding how to proceed both parties should seek expert advice from a family law solicitor as to which option to take.

Offsetting:

Pension Sharing:

Offsetting a pension entitlement in effect means addressing the pension imbalance between the parties by an unequal division or apportionment of other matrimonial assets. The most common example of this would be whereby the wife would receive a greater share of the proceeds of sale of the former matrimonial home in return for the husband retaining his pension. In order to determine how much more equity should the wife receive a proper valuation of the pension should be obtained and both parties should seek specialist family law advice.

The purpose of the 1999 legislation was to enable the courts to address the imbalance of pension provision by awarding the spouse with least pension rights a share of the pension fund held by the other spouse, often the husband. This process overcame many of the disadvantages of earmarking and allowed a share of the husbands’ pension to be transferred into the sole name of the wife thereby enabling her to decide when she would like to retire and equally in many cases pass the benefits of the fund on to surviving children in the event of death before retirement. Pensions are complicated at the best of times. There are many different ways to value pensions and indeed many different types of pension plans. Occupational pension schemes such as the NHS, Teachers Pensions or Police pensions present further challenges. Therefore anybody involved in divorce where pensions are an issue should seek specialist family law advice.

Earmarking: Earmarking a pension requires the court to make an order whereby a percentage of the income received on retirement by the spouse with the pension rights should be paid directly to the spouse who does not have the pension. Whilst at first glance this seems a sensible approach in reality it has tremendous disadvantages such as the fact that no income will be received by the spouse if the pension holder dies or if the spouse entitled the earmarking provision remarries. Once again it is important that proper family law advice is received before making a decision as to how to address the issue of pensions in divorce cases.

If you would like further advice regarding pensions on divorce or matrimonial and separation issues generally please contact Juliette Kinsey on 01274 589900 to make an appointment or visit www.kinseysolicitors.co.uk to find out more.

Free Roof Surveys Will Save You Money Roof Care and Maintenance “Free roof surveys will save you money”, says Julia Wilson of Bingley Roofing Contractors Ltd. She has contacted Here and Now Magazine to give readers the benefit of expert guidance on keeping your home’s roof in good condition. Many of us neglect to appreciate how important it is to maintain your home’s roof in good condition. It is difficult to know as we are not roofing experts and we think it is most likely to be expensive. In truth, the roof plays a vital role in keeping your house watertight and warm and should be inspected once or twice a year to ensure it continues to provide this important role.

How to Check Your Roof Most checks can be done from the ground level. Binoculars can be helpful and a neighbour’s property may also be a useful vantage point. Inspection through the loft access trap may show daylight penetration possibly caused by missing covering or damaged flashings. It is not advisable to attempt accessing and surveying the roof yourself as this presents many hazards. It would be recommended that a reputable and experienced roofing contractor carry out this on your behalf as they would have the suitable safety equipment. A good roofing contractor would generally carry out this quotation free of charge and then recommend any necessary works. IF YOU CHECK YOUR ROOF AS ADVISED, PREFERABLY BEFORE THE INCLEMENT WEATHER IN THE WINTER MONTHS, YOU WILL POTENTIALLY PREVENT WATER PENETRATION CAUSING DAMAGE WITHIN YOUR PROPERTY AND SAVE YOURSELF MONEY. REMEMBER, IF YOU ARE UNSURE, ASK A PROFESSIONAL ROOFING CONTRACTOR TO PROVIDE YOU WITH A ROOF SURVEY AND QUOTATION. THESE ARE USUALLY FREE OF CHARGE. A REPUTABLE COMPANY WILL ADVISE YOU ACCORDINGLY OF THE WORK THAT IS REQUIRED AND OFFER A GUARANTEE FOR ANY ROOFING WORKS THEY COMPLETE.

What to Look For Debris on the ground from broken slates, tiles or defective mortar indicates that there may be a problem. If you have missing tiles or slates, have them reinstated before damage occurs to roof felt, timbers or plaster ceilings. Moss, leaves and other debris can block gutters and cause the overflow of guttering, which can then cause damp to penetrate when running down the walls or to back flow into the roof area. Moss retains moisture, which may damage the roof covering, particularly if left on the roof in frosty weather. Careful removal is advisable and treatments are available to slow down reformation. Hips ridges and flashings can become detached in windy weather if pointing is not maintained. Look in gutters or gullies for signs of mortar droppings. Leaning chimneys or pots may need attention. Seek expert advice. Where a fuel fire is used check for smoke exiting through brickwork or at base of pots. Pointing and re-flaunching may be required. Many roof coverings such as lead or thatch require specialist repair. Do not use unskilled labour or quick-fix materials as these could cause greater long-term damage and greater expense.

For further information or enquiries, please contact Bingley Roofing Contractors Ltd on 01535 273272 34

abyballet is going from strength to strength in the West Yorkshire area where Nancy Lucas and Rachael Gascoigne-Higgins, of babyballet Bradford North, now hold classes in Keighley, Haworth, Wilsden, Saltaire, Shipley, Bingley, Clayton, Greengates, Thackley and Idle! As they themselves are parents of young children, they appreciate the importance of encouraging kids to be active through babyballet classes, to promote health and fitness and to be given the opportunity to socialise with other children of a similar age, which is a very important aspect of developing your child’s social skills. The classes are also a great opportunity for parents to socialise, with many mums making great friends. Nancy and Rachael explained further that babyballet classes incorporate the use of lots of props, tambourines, scarves, drums, teddies and parachutes which are all used to stimulate your child and to encourage coordination, posture and motor skills. Rachael and Nancy have also just completed their very first ‘Star Makers’ show at Woodhouse Grove School’s theatre in Apperley Bridge, where 60 children aged from two years old took part. This was so successful

that another show is planned for spring 2010. To add to babyballet, which is aimed at six to 18 month old babies, Nancy and Rachael have introduced ‘tiny toes’ classes for 18 months to three years and ‘mini movers’ for three to five years. Then there is ‘mini groovers’ for five to seven year olds, ‘funky freestyle’ and street dance, plus creative and more traditional ballet for those between five and ten years. Another new dimension to their classes is the Adult Ballet Tone held every Wednesday evening at Goals Soccer Centre in Bradford, This class is a mix of ballet and aerobic based movements aimed at improving posture and muscle tone, and the great thing is that no previous ballet training is required to benefit. Classes are held from 7pm until 8pm and are £5 per person, per class. Why not try a three week trial at any of the classes mentioned for £10.00 (offer valid only if classes are booked before Christmas 2009). You will need to call straight away though to avoid disappointment as since winning the ITV award, these classes are in great demand We also offer private classes at nurseries, please enquire.

Cardamon

RESTAURANT & TAKEAWAY

Welcome to a Brand New Concept in Indian Restaurants

W

elcome to a brand new concept in Indian restaurants. Cardamon Restaurant and Takeaway in Bingley Main Street opened its doors to the public at the end of September this year after major refurbishment and a huge investment of time and money, making Cardamon into the beautiful establishment you see today. As the menu explains, Cardamon combines a symphony of cultural and authentic Indian flavours, and adds a modern twist with a fusion of western tastes. The restaurant has succeeded in creating a menu that focuses on a more healthy approach, mixing traditional Indian cuisine with different accents from around the world; setting the stage for a unique and enjoyable dining experience. This sounded like the kind of new restaurant we should visit! We chose a Friday evening at the end of October. The first thing we noticed was how much parking there is, both on the main road outside the restaurant and in the car park opposite, a refreshing change and a good start as it was a rainy, miserable evening. Inside Cardamom, the decor is an impressive contemporary design that works well with the restaurant layout. They have extended the original shop front to give a large dining area at the rear of the restaurant and made really good use of the space by introducing dining booths, perfect for groups or those who want a more intimate dining experience. Looking at the menu is a real treat and really easy to work through as everything

is within a section such as Classical Favourites, Tandoori Sizzlers, Delicate and Mild Dishes, Healthy Choices, Signature Dishes, Cardamon Specialities and the new mouth watering Fusion Dishes. They have ensured that there is something for every taste, even catering for those who are watching their weight or following a healthier lifestyle! The chef, Mr. Meah has put a lot of thought into designing such a unique menu. We started with Chicken Tikka, strips of grilled chicken served with flash fried onions (£2.70) and King Prawn Butterfly (£3.20). Sharing each other’s starter for comparison, we decided that we could not choose our favourite and enjoyed them both equally. For our main courses we chose the Special Karahi from the ‘Cardamon’s Special’ choices, this is a dish which combines chicken tikka, lamb tikka and shish kebabs and is full of elegant flavours (£6.95). We were determined to also choose a dish from the ‘Fusion’ selection. For those who are more adventurous there is Ostrich, Sorisha Sea Bass and chef’s own creation, Bingley Locks, a sweet and spicy dish of tender chicken, rhubarb, garlic, spring onions, ground cinnamon and shallots. However, we chose the Venison Mangsho, luscious pieces of venison cooked with aromatic spices and herbs, ginger, spring onions, okra, methi, shallots and fresh bullet chillies (£9.95). This came with Pilau rice which we shared as we also ordered a Peshwari Naan (£2.30) and a plain Naan (£1.95). Both dishes were exceptional and we

decided that with such a unique menu, Cardamon is the kind of restaurant that you will want to visit time and again to work your way through the dishes in each section to find your favourites, as this restaurant is extremely good value for money. There is also a takeaway menu which, unusually, offers everything from the main restaurant menu, and is as busy as the restaurant was on the evening we visited, when there was also a steady stream of takeaways going out of the door! They have obviously got a winning formula to be able to satisfy both types of customer with high quality food and service. Well done Cardamon! We contacted the restaurant after our visit and asked them if they would like to do a reader offer for Here & Now Magazine, which they very kindly accepted. So make sure you visit Cardamon Restaurant and Takeaway in Main Street, Bingley at your earliest opportunity and use the 15% Discount Voucher on this page. You will not be disappointed! Please note no alcohol is sold at Cardamon Restaurant, however you are invited to bring your own.

A Superb Dining Experience

A

modern cafe in Baildon, run by local girl, Sharon Frost, provides the ideal place to call in for a coffee and cake with friends or for a lovely home-made lunch. Nine@ Westgate serves a varied menu of breakfasts, lunches and take-away sandwiches, cakes and pastries, all of which are home-made, and if you fancy a glass of wine with your lunch, Nine also holds a full alcohol licence. Plus, there’s an exquisite range of Fair Trade specialist coffees to round off your superb dining experience. Sharon trained as a chef at the White House Restaurant on Baildon Moor and then for a time, became its head chef. She has now realised her dream of running her own eatery and explains: “I have always wanted to run my own catering business and enjoy dividing my time between the kitchen and working out front in the cafe.” Baildon is a lovely, picturesque village with some fabulous shops and places to visit so

makes a great place to spend a day on your own, with friends or family, and Nine@ Westgate is the perfect place to stop off for some good, wholesome, hearty home cooking. In fact the cakes and pastries are so scrumptious that you will probably want to take some home too! Situated in the old mill house on Westgate, which was originally built as the mill owner’s house, it has previously been a girls school, a post office and, more recently, a bakery and tea rooms - probably remembered by people of Baildon as Feathers, run by the Jowett family for over 50 years. Despite its many re-incarnations and inevitable building alterations, Nine@ Westgate manages to combine its original external character with a modern day thriving business, and although you may no longer be able to buy

your stamps or learn your times tables there, you can always be sure of a friendly face, a welcoming atmosphere and superb food. Sharon makes sure of that! Nine is also now open every Thursday and Friday evening, when Sharon turns the cafe into a fabulous Bistro with a menu to challenge many other local restaurants. And if that wasn’t enough to fill Sharon’s time, she also provides a thriving outside catering business! Bookings are now being taken for Christmas lunches and evenings. A visit to Nine@ Westgate is highly recommended, it’s the place to meet and eat in Baildon!

Supporting The Pink Lunch

omen with Vision is really growing in strength and numbers and its success is down to the calibre and commitment of the members, who are reaping the rewards of business support and lucrative incremental business that would have gone elsewhere if they had not been involved in Women with Vision. However, apart from supporting each others’ businesses, the members are keen to support local charities whenever possible and in particular Bradford Cancer Support. So they bought a table at The Pink Lunch on Saturday 10th October and went as The Pink Ladies! October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month and The Pink Lunch is an

annual event which helps raise awareness and much needed funds for this worthy cause. If you would like to know more about Bradford Cancer Support or how you can get involved or find out what support is available, Tel: 01274 776688. BY HELEN CARTER

GoodTimes for the Keighley Cougars

H

i folks. Well, what a super time we’ve had at Cougar Park in October. By the end of the league season we’d finished second in the Co-operative Championship One table and qualified for the end-of-season play-off. Not only did we qualify for the play-off but we won it by beating Oldham in an emotional Grand Final at Warrington. It was a nervewracking day for everybody at the Cougars. Although we’d beaten Oldham both home and away in the league, they’d come with a late run of form that saw them reach the Grand Final with three impressive wins from fourth place. Ten minutes from the end of the Grand Final, Cougars were winning 21-12 but again Oldham came back with a flourish and the match ended with Keighley winning 28-26. That completed the club’s dream of winning promotion to the Co-operative Championship alongside league champions Dewsbury Rams, the only team to do the double over the Cougars in 2009. Believe me, it was a wonderful party at Cougar Park in the evening after the Grand Final win and several sights will stay in our memories for ever including the ‘Green Army’ chanting performance by our leading points scorer Danny Jones. And at least one un-named member of the Cougar Park staff had to have the Grand Final trophy almost surgically removed from her grip at the end of the evening, so attached had she become to it during the evening. There was a wonderful response from the civic and business communities of the town to the Cougars triumph. J Wilds of Steeton, owners of the Grandma Wilds bakery shops around the district, produced a wonderful cake which provided a fantastic centre piece to all the celebrations. On the Wednesday after the Grand Final the players, coaches and officials were treated to an open top bus tour of the town centre by former Town Mayor, Councillor Graham Mitchell. The owner of an open topped bus based at Keighley Bus Museum off Dalton Lane, Cllr Mitchell had promised the club such a tour if they ever won anything…and he was good as his word! After the town centre tour, Keighley Town Council gave the club a civic celebration at the Town Hall on Bow Street. The Town Council’s Mayor, Councillor Margaret Ward, welcomed the players and officials from the Cougars into the Council chamber for a champagne reception and then made a congratulatory speech. Once the effects of the champagne

48

started to wear off, the club went back to work starting its preparations for the 2010 season. Head Coach Barry Eaton has been negotiating with at least three new players as well as the majority of the 2009 Cougar squad. Most of the players have been taking a well earned rest and they report back for pre-season training in November. It’s a time honoured maxim in Rugby League that any success in Rugby League is usually based on your pre-season training programme and it certainly worked in 2009! The Cougars have also given the faithful followers a reward by dropping the cost of their season tickets for 2010. For next year the cost of an adult ground season ticket will be £120 - £20 less than last year and if you buy one before December 18th there’s a further discount of more than 15% because they cost just £100. Those reductions are also being cascaded down through all the other ticket classifications. To match all the other gate admission costs in the Co-operative Championship, the Cougars have increased their adult ground admission at the turnstile from £11 to £14. Not only does the new price structure reward the fans who have stuck with the club through recent seasons, it makes sure that the financial load is more evenly spread throughout the game’s fan base. The Cougars have also provided the kick off or launch for the Bradford District ‘Alcohol Awareness Week’ which was running through from Monday October 19 to Friday October 24. Our Head Coach Barry Eaton was allowed to drink on duty as part of an experiment where he took five kicks at goal then he was given two pints of strong lager. He then took five more shots at goal – he missed on having kicked all five at his first attempt. Then he had another pint and took five more kicks – this time he missed twice! At the end of the session he was breathalysed by the Police and they told him he would not have been allowed to drive home. Fortunately the club’s Media Manager John Huxley drove him back to his home in Wakefield. Overseeing the event was Minister for Sport and the MP for Bradford

South, Gerry Sutcliffe; the MP for Keighley, Ann Cryer; the chairman of Bradford Council’s Keighley Area Committee, Councillor Glen Miller; and the commander of West Yorkshire Police’s Aire and North Bradford Division, Chief Superintendent All Doherty. The medical supervision on the day was provided by Dr Paul Bolton from the Holycroft Surgery on Oakworth Road in Keighley. It was all good fun on the day but there was a serious underlying message for people throughout Bradford to ‘rethink your drink’ as well as supporting the Government’s message about units of alcohol contained in each drink. And finally, both Barry Eaton and our leading try scorer Jon Presley were honoured at the Co-operative Championship Annual Dinner in Manchester. Barry was one of three people Nominated for ‘Coach of the Year’ while Jon was among the trio up for the Championship One ‘Player of the Year’ Award. Neither of them was chosen as the winner but it was a major honour for them and the club that they were one of the final three nominations. Well done boys. On behalf of the Chairman and Board of Directors, Players, Coaching staff and staff at Keighley Cougars can I wish all the ‘Here and Now’ readers a very Happy Christmas and more prosperous New Year. I look forward to seeing you in 2010 and to another exciting Rugby League season.
