y d a e r Are youo take charge? t

If I’m not in charge then who the hell is?’ wondered ‘Sebastian’ out loud. He was reflecting on his progress in 2009. He is the only person I know who writes down his New Year resolutions on January 1st and can actually find them on December 31st! One of his resolutions for 2009 was to file his paperwork at home so that he could find things when he needed them, and take any necessary actions. He described what used to happen. First he would start looking for a document, and then feel frustrated when he couldn’t find it. Next he would feel angry. This was followed by a sense of being powerless and sinking into a state of helpless collapse. The result: ‘It’s all gone wrong’ and the state of chaos rules again. Not being able to find a piece of paper may sound trivial to the organised among us, but I’m sure he is not alone. Each time we go through this chain of emotional responses, our bodies secrete powerful hormones that were originally designed for us to go out, and hunt our dinner. When these hormones are not discharged in the way nature intended we are

left with toxic chemicals in the body. Over time, these damage the immune system and down the road we may experience chronic infections, high blood pressure, and a host of other more serious illnesses. So Sebastian was wise to tackle this chronic source of stress and distress. He said that coaching enabled him to pinpoint the reasons for not being able to rid himself of this old habit before. Coaching reached the parts of him that making lists and will power had not been able to access or result in change. He made the changes he wanted and built them into his daily life during his coaching. Then he was able to continue on his own. He reports occasional lapses, but now he forgives himself and doesn’t allow them to be the reason for reverting to old ways and feelings. His reward is experiencing a feeling of power that he has a choice now, he is in charge. He doesn’t need to give that power to old negative thoughts any longer. The bonus is being able to find things when he needs them. So not only could he find his January resolutions, he turned them into a successful revolution that was still in place in December.

Do you need some support to finally nail that on-going source of stress? Why not take a leaf out of Sebastian’s book and turn your New Year resolutions into New Year revolutions too? Jenny helps people to take charge of their stress before stress takes charge of them. Stress can be like an elephant in your front room, quietly getting larger, then one day it will turn and pick you up, and dangle you in mid-air until you pay attention. Don’t wait until your elephant grabs you! Do you really want to develop a stress related illness, lose sleep, become anxious and depressed? Why not take advantage of a free Personal Stress Audit with Jenny and start the year as the elephant trainer! When you learn how to become the mahout and take charge of your elephant, you will enjoy more vitality and energy, your health will benefit, and negative stress levels will be reduced. To find out more, email health@keystepscoaching.com or telephone 0845 051 9406. Your thirty minute stress audit is conducted on the telephone, in complete confidence.

Testimonial Working with Jenny has been a life changing experience for me. Her coaching sessions consistently provide fresh opportunities to discern the true nature of my life situation, to become clearly aware of where I am, where I really want to go and most importantly, what I need to do to get there. Once the way is clear, Jenny’s coaching provides a gentle but effective accountability mechanism to keep me on the path that I have chosen. In just a few months, I’ve seen my stress levels drop and my overall personal and professional life satisfaction grow by leaps and bounds. Make a Weight Loss Resolution you can Stick to

T

he beginning of a New Year is a time for resolutions and fresh starts so it is the perfect time to commit to shedding any extra pounds you might be carrying. Whether you have put weight on due to the excesses of the Christmas party season, or have been overweight for some time, by making the pledge to turn over a healthy new leaf in the New Year, you are far more likely to stick to it. Weight loss expert Lynne Ingham, who runs the Keighley and Ilkley All About W8 consultancies, says that the New Year is one of the best times to start a weight loss programme because of the opportunity for change that it offers. Lynne says: “People say ‘New Year, New You’ and this really couldn’t be truer. Christmas is a time when people tend to eat and drink to excess but while their conscience may be pricking, it is never too late to slim down and shape up. The start of a New Year is a great time to begin because you are far more likely to stick to your resolution.” Lynne helps people from the Keighley and Ilkley areas achieve their weight loss goals by supporting them on their journey on one of the five All About W8 programmes designed to suit different lifestyles. All About W8 gives rapid weight loss through nutritionally balanced Mealpaks and healthy meals from an ‘add a meal’ approved list. The programmes teach portion control and healthy eating for life. The opportunity for re-education they offer means All About W8 is a long term solution rather than a quick fix ‘fad’ diet which can lead to you putting all the weight back on – plus more! Lynne says: “People are different and

just like with dresses, one size does not fit all with a weight loss programme, which is why All About W8 has five; Rapid, Regular, Fast Track. Weekender and new programme W8 For Life. All give great results and I am here to support people on their journey with one-to-one mentoring and group classes to help them stay motivated. “With commitment and support from me, you really can change your life by losing weight and revealing a new and healthier you that will last well after the New Year parties have been forgotten. And who knows, by next Christmas you could have the figure you have always dreamed of.” Lynne is also now offering people from the area a business opportunity, delivering the new W8 For Life programme. Lynne is

looking for five W8 For Life agents to hold classes in the local area. W8 For Life is a fantastic business opportunity that can be run part time.

Find Out More: Lynne has bases in Temple Chambers, Russell Street, Keighley and Lower Ground Floor, 50/52 Skipton Road, Ilkley. Anyone who is interested in losing weight or becoming a W8 For Life agent can contact Lynne on 0844 544 8323, or 07941 392460. For more information visit Lynne at www.allaboutw8.co.uk/keighley

steps towards

Easing the Pain of Relationship Breakdown

ver the years, local family law specialist Juliette Kinsey of Kinsey & Co Solicitors in Baildon has witnessed the devastating effects the trauma of relationship breakdown can have on the health and wellbeing of her clients. She believes that the impact of the breakdown of a relationship can be far-reaching and should not be underestimated. As an accredited Resolution family law specialist, Juliette Kinsey believes that if separating couples try to take the five following steps, they can help reduce the impact of their separation on each other, their children and their family and friends. Whilst acknowledging that these steps will not alleviate every difficulty, Juliette does believe that much of the distress and anxiety that arises can be reduced.

1. Maintaining communication:

4. Seeking specialist family law advice:

It is vitally important that separating couples maintain a dialogue. Aggressive and unpleasant communication between couples only serves to close down the opportunity to resolve matters between themselves sensibly and sensitively.

Seeking sound, sensible legal advice is a must. Choose your solicitor carefully. Ensure that your solicitor is a family law specialist and therefore able to advise you on all aspects of your relationship breakdown. Resolution (formerly the Solicitors Family Law Association) is an organisation made up of family lawyers who undertake to deal with family matters in a constructive and sensible way.

1

Couples who maintain a constructive dialogue and resist the temptation to become personal and embittered, undoubtedly resolve their issues more quickly and sensitively than those who adopt a confrontational approach. Equally, the way a separating couple communicate with each other will have a long term impact on their ability to provide joint support for their children.

2. Telling the children:

2

The way separating couples break the news to their children, that they are going to live apart, is very important in helping a child come to terms with the new family structure. Ideally, both parents should tell their children that the relationship has broken down and emphasise to the children that they are not to blame. Many children perceive that their parents have separated because they have been naughty or not worked hard at school and these misunderstandings can cause tremendous distress to children needlessly.

3. Dealing with Financial matters:

3

Maintaining financial stability during the breakdown of a relationship is vital. Such stability emotionally assists both parties in reaching agreement regarding finances and equally helps to ensure that both parties’ credit histories remain unaffected and bad debts do not accrue needlessly. If accounts and mortgages are in joint names, both parties will need to work together if mortgage providers and banks are to action their wishes.

4

Taking specialist family law advice should not be interpreted as an aggressive move but instead a sensible step towards resolving matters practically and constructively. 5. Taking time to heal: It is often said that bereavement, divorce and moving home can be the three most stressful events in a person’s life. A relationship breakdown can embody all three. For the majority of people, divorce and separation in itself is a grieving process for the breakdown of a relationship and can indeed involve the sale of a property or the purchase of a new one. Give yourself time to adapt to your new circumstances and allow yourself to grieve. Decisions taken when you are not ready can have a detrimental effect on your long term future. You need to be confident and sure of your own wishes before taking any major decisions.

5

If you are separating from your partner or spouse and wish to seek further advice on your position and how best to take matters forward please contact Juliette Kinsey of Kinsey & Co Solicitors in Baildon on 01274 589900 to make an appointment to see her.

. . . t n e r e f f i D Why they are

A

t Nuffield Health, Fitness and Wellbeing Centres, the aim is to improve your wellbeing for the long term by helping you to actively take control of your health, and under the guidance of Helen Walker, general manager of Nuffield Health at Cottingley Manor in Cottingley, her team of experts are making a major difference to their members wellbeing in fantastic innovative ways and word is spreading! One of the major factors to making such a difference is the introduction of the MOT Health Assessment, as Helen explained, “There is no point in trundling through a fitness

10

Body & Soul

programme without knowing where you are going or what you are trying to achieve. The MOT health assessment is a great place to start as it gives a comprehensive 60 minute health evaluation with a qualified Wellbeing Advisor. We then use the results to assess your current health status and to identify opportunities for you to improve your health, wellbeing and quality of life. This sounded very impressive and I made it my mission to find out more and experience the assessment personally. I was a little worried as it included a blood test and being a bit of a wimp, I had visions of the usual syringe full being taken which I was

dreading! However, that part of the test was just a prick of the finger, completely painless; in fact the whole test although very detailed was completely none intrusive and actually quite relaxing. The session starts with a review of your health history, measurement of your height and weight to calculate your BMI (body mass index), and a measurement of your blood pressure. You are then attached to a device which gives an estimation of your aerobic fitness at rest, where your resting heart rate is measured while you relax on a bed. Your blood is analysed after fasting, for blood glucose and total cholesterol and this is where my own assessment made me take notice, as unbeknown to me I had a very high cholesterol reading! However, my wellbeing advisor, Kirsty Anne Cowling, was absolutely brilliant and explained how easy it would be to bring it to a safe level through making some minor adjustments to my diet and exercise programme. Your waist and hips are measured in order to calculate a waist to hip ratio and finally a

review of musculoskeletal history is taken. All of this information generates a personalised action plan that is geared towards your individual needs, and identifies any results that could lead to higher than normal risks of injury, which also helps to determine whether any extra attention or care is needed while taking part in subsequent exercise programmes. Regular checkins will chart your progress and improvements and help to keep you motivated. Following my own assessment, I was keen to adapt my eating in particular to bring my cholesterol under control and with their help I found this easy to do and felt so much better in myself. The MOT Assessment is just one of a number of reasons why Nuffield Health at Cottingley Manor is different, as included in your membership is also a monthly ‘Meet the Experts’ event, where dedicated seminars are held to tackle everything from men’s health issues to general relaxation to immunisation. There are also weekly seminars on sleep, hydration, nutrition, fad diets and dealing with stress. There is even a 3 month membership with a dedicated programme designed to manage diabetes!

? h g u o n e n o s a Is that re

The facilities at Nuffield Health at Cottingley Manor are second to none. Based in a beautiful old building, set in stunning landscaped grounds with a lake that is home to ducks and geese, there is ample free parking within the grounds, a day nursery for members and none members children, a members restaurant, fully equipped changing rooms (with lockers), a 25 metre swimming pool (swimming classes available), personal trainers, every type of activity class you can imagine from spinning to Pilates and Tai Chi! Now if these are not reasons enough to see why Nuffield Health is different, here’s a few more! January sees the opening of a dedicated gym for females who are body conscious or new to exercise and don’t yet have the confidence to train in the main mixed sex gyms. PLUS in February a private Physiotherapy clinic will be opening! One thing not yet mentioned is the Relaxation Spa which offers an extensive list of beauty and relaxation treatments for both members and none members, but more about that on the next page... Last word goes back to manager Helen, “I have been with Nuffield Health, formerly Cannons, since the year 2000 and as I come up to my 10 year anniversary, I am really excited about the changes here at Cottingley. Since becoming part of Nuffield Health we have been constantly changing for the better. Our existing members are thrilled with the developments and we welcome any past members to come back for a visit to see firsthand what we have done. My team are passionate about the difference they can make and the good they can do armed with their specialist training and knowledge.”

Relax Re-energise and be Pampered at the Relaxation Spa

T

he whole festive season can completely drain many people, particularly if you were the one responsible for organising Christmas and New Year celebrations, in fact you should feel like doing something to completely de-stress and relax as a ‘thank you to yourself’ for another job well done! Well at Nuffield Health at Cottingley Manor, the perfect oasis of calm and indulgence awaits... Bianca and Jessica are the resident experts in the spa and after experiencing the superb service of the health and fitness team there, I was keen to see how good the treatments were, especially as I was completely frazzled by the run up to Christmas myself and needed some urgent TLC! I booked myself in with Bianca, the senior therapist, for the Elemis Face and Body Sensation, a 55 minute pure body indulgence experience, plus the Holistic Deluxe Foot Treatment which takes an hour and 15 minutes. So I was very excited about having over 2 hours of pampering, especially as all products used are Elemis, the leading luxury British spa and skincare brand favoured by many celebrities and spa-goers. I have long been a fan of Elemis so expectations were high! I was pleasantly surprised by the Relaxation Spa facilities, lovely treatment rooms with perfect ambient setting, (no radio or blaring music here). A lot of thought has gone into making you feel welcome and relaxed as soon as you step through the door. I was personally greeted by Bianca and offered a drink, (the first of many), then had a consultation regarding my chosen treatments and the benefits I could expect to

receive from having them. I started with the foot treatment and oh my goodness, it was divine! Not the run of the mill pedicure by any means, even the foot spa was top of the range and gave a really good massage! There was a wonderful foot and leg massage and a foot mask which was helped to soak into the skin by placing my feet into heated foot mittens...I was on the verge of falling asleep but wanted to remember everything to tell our readers so fought on in the face of adversity! My feet and legs pampered, polished and feeling like they had been away on a wonderful holiday, it was now time for my face and body sensation. I was led into a warm treatment room which had candles and oils burning, quiet holistic sounds and music playing and was lit for complete

relaxation. Bianca started with a body brush, followed by a full body massage using hot stones combined with hand massage, focussing on any tight stress points for special attention. It’s amazing how driving and constant pc use can build tension in certain parts of the body, which you don’t realise until someone releases it. It really felt good to have full movement in my neck and shoulders again! Included in this treatment is also one of the Elemis Advanced Anti-Ageing Facials, all in all providing a wonderful experience that not only makes you feel fabulous but my complexion looked and felt like it had had a mini facelift! And yes, I did fall asleep...I tried my best not to but I was so deeply relaxed, thanks to the expertise of Bianca, that I couldn’t fight it any longer. I will be making this a regular treat as I am worth it...what about you?

The May School of Dance & Theatre Arts in Crosshills

The

Fairy Tale came true!

O

nce upon a time there was a little girl called Christine, who loved to dance and perform. She liked nothing more than attending her weekly dance classes and taking part in shows, and as she grew up, Christine excelled at dance, eventually becoming a qualified dance teacher, passing on her expertise to others who like her had a dream to dance and perform. In 1989, at the tender age of 19, Christine realised her ambition of owning her own dance school when she opened The May School of Dance at Steeton Methodist Church, home to the school for the next 18 years! Christine was really successful at running the school, and through hard work, dedication and introducing many other teachers, who each specialised in a specific area of dance and performing arts, many new children and adults enrolled, and after 18 years they had outgrown the original home of the school. Christine

16

Life & Leisure

was very sad about this as Steeton Methodist Church had been a wonderful home for the school for many years; however Christine soon became very excited about the school’s future when she found a wonderful new home for them in Crosshills, at 53 Main Street. Christine was by now married and had 2 children of her own, Finlay and Mollie, both keen students of the school themselves, and luckily Christine’s husband, Philip, was able to transform the new premises, creating the vision that Christine had in her head for the perfect performing arts school. Over the following few months, the vision became a reality with dedicated performance rooms where pupils could learn ballet, jazz, tap, singing, drama, street dance...the list goes on! In 2007, everything was ready and Christine officially opened the new May School of Dance & Theatre Arts, bringing lots of excitement to the people of Crosshills, and the

children (and many of their parents!), flocked to the school to have fun and learn new skills. Three years on and The May School of Dance goes from strength to strength, introducing new classes all the time to keep up with modern trends, and the really wonderful thing is that this new year, Christine celebrates 21 years as principle of the school and here reflects on the many successful pupils she had had through her doors: “I can’t believe how quickly the time has passed, the 3 years we have been in Crosshills has just flown by, and more specifically the 21 years I have been principle have simply disappeared! I have wonderful memories of many children coming to me as toddlers and loving to dance and perform so much that they eventually leave me to go into further education to make dance their career. I am unbelievably proud of what our pupils achieve. We also have some of the most talented and dedicated teachers at the school, there are even a couple of ex-students who have returned as teachers which is wonderful to see as they can really relate to the children from their own experiences. In 2010 we are focusing on our drama classes, our teacher Sarah Cornforth, trained at Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London, and currently teaches drama at Skipton Girls School. Is Homework Time a Battleground in your Home?

H

ow many caring parents out there have been on the receiving end of, “That’s wrong, we don’t do it like that at school!”. Frustrations like this, which have built up over a period, can often come to a head at homework time with the people a child is closest to. Someone who may not have the confidence to put their hand up in the classroom or admit in front of thirty classmates that they are struggling to grasp ideas will understandably vent their negative feelings on parents when they are tired and would rather be watching television or playing with others. For even the most caring and patient of parents this can be a very wearing and worrying experience.

Confidence For many children homework tears are a symptom of a general lack of confidence in one or more areas of learning. A child can sometimes feel they are being asked to do XYZ when they themselves know that they never really grasped ABC confidently. They can feel confused between what they are being asked to do and what they know they can comfortably achieve. A builder would not feel comfortable in laying new bricks on wobbly foundations so why should your child be any different? Even the brightest of children can lose confidence and self-esteem. In extreme cases this can lead to behaviour problems both at school and home. In other cases a child may simply disengage from learning and become the dreamer in the corner.

GCSE On the other hand, over confidence and complacency can sometimes be a problem with children such as teenagers studying for GCSEs. More able children may feel

inclined to freewheel and fall behind their true potential whilst others might not fully grasp the requirements of the GCSE syllabus. For all students the exams seem so far away for such a long time and then creep up all too quickly. All too often GCSE students realise too late the shortcomings in their learning, with little time to put things back on track. Consequently, confidence is seriously diminished at exactly the time it should be at its highest.

Professional Tutoring – A brighter future In recent years parents have increasingly realised that professional tutoring can be a very effective way of boosting a child’s confidence and self-esteem by providing a fun and stimulating learning environment. The traditional idea of a private tutor sitting at the kitchen table and battling with limited resources against the many distractions of the home, T.V., Hi-fi, siblings, etc., has been overtaken by the idea of purpose-equipped Education Centres, often staffed with qualified teachers. Here children are taught with individual learning plans based upon their own specific needs. Children like learning with other children around when the work set is engaging,

fun and appropriate to their unique level of development! Children also need a caring environment that helps to build confidence and put them on a steady course to success.

Providers There is an increasing number of Education Centres delivering a high quality of private tuition after school and at weekends in the West Yorkshire region. Most provide free assessments and cater for a wide variety of ages and abilities. However, not all employ fully qualified staff so, to be sure, ask before you commit yourself.

SHIPLEY

New Year Celebration Offers

T

here are not many businesses that are breaking records at the moment but United Carpets in Shipley are certainly bucking the trend with their success. Owner Adrian Lee told us that much of this success is down to the fact that United Carpets as a whole are the UK’s fastest growing carpet retailer, with unrivalled buying power and this means that each store can offer the largest selection of carpet and flooring at unbeatable prices! Adrian is confident that with discounts and offers, which cannot and will not be matched by anyone else in the area, and the extensive choice in flooring and beds on offer at his Shipley store, he has got something to suit anyone’s pocket. However, Adrian wants his customers to know that such a vast range of products, at brilliant prices, does not mean that there has been a compromise on quality. In fact far from it as the ten point Customer Charter, a pledge to all United Carpets customers proves. The charter leaves you in no doubt that they are a company you can trust in today’s uncertain economic climate. With United Carpets, your money and goods are completely safe and you will receive exceptional service each and every time. With fantastic offer for the New Year on beds and flooring, a visit to the Shipley store has to be your first port of call! It will also probably be your last

as whatever your requirements and budget you will find the perfect flooring for your home, office or commercial premises, expert advice and service from the in-store team plus a superb fitting service by fully trained, fully insured, trustworthy fitters! You never know who you are letting into your home, so it’s reassuring to hear that the fitting team at United Carpets in Shipley have been an established team for the last 10 years. Because the total sales and service experience is so good, they work on 80% referrals from satisfied customers. Many carpet shops have just one fitter, which means you could be waiting quite a while to have your own carpet fitted - if their previous fitting job runs over time, this has a knock on effect, delaying your own carpet. Due to the size of the store, United Carpets, Shipley have a fitting team large enough to guarantee getting your new carpet fitted at your convenience and not the store’s - it can even be fitted the next day if that is what you want. It makes sense to call in at United Carpets, Woodfloor and Beds in Shipley for choice, quality, and service and probably the best deals you will find anywhere. 15. Garam Masala 1/2 tbsp

First Marinate and cook the chicken. To season the chicken, we put the cutlets into a bowl and rubbed it with salt, cumin, coriander adding oil, garlic and ginger, mixed with yoghurt. Refrigerate for 40 minutes before cooking the chicken cutlets under the grill.

14. Sugar 2 teaspoons

Whilst the chicken is cooking, we will make the massala sauce.

13. Tomato Puree 2 tbsp

Heat two tablespoons of oil in a pan. Add the finely diced onion, half a tablespoon of ginger and garlic and 1tablespoon of paprika in pan. Cook for 2-3 minutes for it to soften.

4. Ginger

Add the chilli powder, turmeric and garam massala and cook for 2-3 minutes. Now add the tomato puree and sugar to give the sauce a colour and sweetness. Allow to cook for 3-4 minutes.

1 tbsp - minced

5. Garlic 1 clove crushed

Tandoori and Grills Freshly prepared and served with Salad and Chutney.

This method of cooking is an ancient art, handed down through many generations and a speciality of our chef. All tandoori dishes are cooked over charcoal in individual portions in a traditional oven made of special clay. Only natural ingredients are used with little or no fat oil (dieters need not be concerned) therefore the full flavour of the meat and the spices are retained for your enjoyment. Tandoori dishes are brought to the table sizzling. Tandoori Naans and Curry Sauce are recommended with these dishes.

ith over 18 years’ experience between them, the team at Bathrooms in Mind, based in Shipley, can offer the perfect bathroom for you. Owner, Paul Sunderland, explains: “We are a small family-run business with a team of six. All are City and Guilds trained with a minimum of eight years’ experience each in their field - whether it be from wet rooms to small cloak rooms, we have the experience to make your bathroom work and be perfect for you, and we pride ourselves on offering a one-to-one service.” As one delighted customer said: “It’s never too much trouble for the team at Bathrooms in Mind - if they can do it they will.” The firm, which also boasts a new showroom near to completion in the centre of Shipley, is home to a large selection of natural stone tiles, in particular, Jerusalem stone, travertine, and marble, giving any bathroom the ‘Wow!’ factor’, and bringing you a warmer more welcoming bathroom. A frequent misconception is that

28

under floor heating is only for the rich – but Bathrooms in Mind caters for all budgets and bathrooms. It is seeing more and more customers using under floor heating as a secondary heat source in their bathroom. In fact, the showroom in Shipley has the full lower floor heated this way so you can try before you buy! Don’t worry if you have a very tight budget to work with in these times of recession, because Paul has just launched four different bathroom packages, ranging from £285 to £1,800, so you can transform your old bathroom into a clean, fresh and much more attractive room at a fraction of the usual cost. Paul continues: “This I feel is a very good compromise when things are a little tight. We also do general plumbing, and have a shower tray and bath repair service which saves replacing the bath. “At Bathrooms in Mind, we feel that customer service is key, and we listen to what the customer wants, whether it is full installation or supply only, we will still go the extra mile.”

on Huby from Calverley, gave up a full time career in September this year to pursue his business idea in residential lettings and management, along with his fiancée. After many years in corporate sales and account management, dealing with large multinational companies Jon was faced with the threat of possible redundancy in autumn last year. He looked at many career and employment options, paying particular interest to the residential lettings and management areas of the property market. Through extensive due diligence within the industry Jon found there was a demand for an agent who could provide outstanding customer service, in what is a largely unregulated market. Jon wanted to stand head and shoulders above his competitors from the beginning, so contacted the Guild of Letting & Management (GLM) and The National Approved Letting Scheme (NALS), for advice and feedback on his research. This led him to complete the BTEC National Diploma in Letting and Management to acquire knowledge and understanding of the current regulations and requirements of the letting industry. Gaining NALS accreditation reflects the strict and correct processes and procedures his company adheres to when dealing with tenants and landlords. With everything in place, Jon decided on the name Lets Go Professional Ltd. It reflects how the company operates and who it deals with. Baildon at Christmas

W

hat a way to start the festive season! ‘Baildon at Christmas’ was a true community celebration with overwhelming support from the village. Organised by four people and with a budget of a few hundred pounds, it really was a triumph. The Arts and Crafts Market, which was set out over three venues, showcased high quality handmade gifts by makers from within the BD postcode. Each venue had delicious cakes and snacks made by the WI Baildon Belles and at the Moravian Church, the Guides did a great job of serving their many hungry customers. Almost all shops and businesses were open and many put on special promotional offers or gave free gifts, food or drink to shoppers on the evening, and raffle prizes donated by Baildon businesses, raised money for Children in Need.

The streets were bustling with people of all ages, many reuniting with friends they hadn’t seen in years. Even the drizzle didn’t dampen the atmosphere, there was a nostalgic sense of Baildon as it once was and back on the map! Santa arrived on the back of a Harley Davidson, to cheers from his many fans and the Brownies, dressed as Santa’s helpers, distributed chocolates. Santa was unable to walk around the village due to the popularity of the event; however he gave us a song and a boogie, which added some fun to the proceedings. The evening would not have happened if it was not for the support and kindness of so many local people. A special thank you to Christmas Plus, Baildon Parish Council, The Round Table, The Harley’s, The Malt Shovel, The Co-op, Baildon Bells, The Brownies, The Guides, Peter Griffiths, Chris

Taylor, Baildon Businesses Social Group, Artylicious, Creative Impressions, Funtastik after-school club, The Baildon Club, Mad Publications, all the shops and business who extended there working day, all the schools for distributing information and most importantly, to all ‘Baildoners’ for making it such a success! We hope the support will continue for 2010 and that with some more help in organising and a larger budget we can add to the lights, have an arts and crafts market in more venues allowing people the opportunity to browse, and who knows maybe even a snow machine and reindeers! Please send any photo you have of the evening to Nicola Murray at odd_dog@live. co.uk as we would like to have an exhibition of the best ones in the New Year. Have a lovely Christmas and a happy New Year.
