Voted the BES the World by A s a reader of Here & Now Magazine, I was intrigued to read the feature on The Barber Shop. I had watched with interest as the existing pharmacy was gutted and completely re-fit in bright red and white. The signage went up and at last we all knew what it was going to be. Then the banner went up declaring ‘Voted the Best Barber in the World by my Loyal Customers’ - a very bold statement in view of the fact that the shop had not yet opened. Once it did I saw the feature in Here & Now full of very positive customer testimonials! My intrigue grew and the only way to get some answers was to visit The Barber Shop myself to see firsthand if this was as good an experience as I was being led to believe! First impression as I walked in was that although very busy, the owner Zaffar Iqbal acknowledged me immediately and invited me to help myself to a tea or coffee while I was waiting; very good so far. Looking around, there were men and boys of all ages, all with

completely different requirements but not one request fazed Zaffar. The speed and care with which he worked was so good that I found myself watching him instead of reading the paper I had picked up from the well-stocked coffee table.

T

here were about six customers before me but I didn’t have to wait long. To test Zaffar’s skills to the maximum, I asked for “the works”. I wanted my hair cut number one at the back, graduating to number two on top and a full cut throat shave. The last ‘proper shave’ I had was in one of these expensive men’s grooming places in Leeds and I paid a small fortune to be hacked with a very blunt razor - not a good experience, so I was quite nervous but determined to see how good this guy was. Ok, my hair was cut to perfection in about 5 minutes flat...very impressive! The shave started with a firm facial massage which makes the skin tingle. At this point hot towels were applied to open the pores in readiness for the shave. My beard was then lathered using hot water and a traditional badger hair shaving brush. Using a cut throat razor I was shaved in the direction of the hair growth, with Zaffar stretching the skin all the time. This was so relaxing that I found myself dozing off instead of gripping the chair in terror!

N Ap poi o Ne ntm ces e sar nt y

Hot towels were applied again and as Zaffar massaged the skin through the towels, I could feel the steam really cleansing my skin. This was followed by a cold towel to close the pores, making my skin feel vibrant and not one bit sore. To finish off aftershave and moisturising cream were applied. If I say so myself, you would be hard pressed to find a baby’s bottom that felt better!

So now I have to confess, if you have not already guessed, I am a complete cynic converted. I now treat myself to a shave at The Barber Shop every Saturday morning and I never get my hair cut anywhere else. So don’t knock the banner until you have been to Zaffar yourself... I defy you not to become one of his loyal customers!

Revitalise Your Digestion Do indigestion and heartburn spoil a good meal for you? If so, you are not alone; the market for remedies is huge. Too much acid however is probably not the cause of your discomfort and your chosen remedy, whilst appearing to give relief, may be making things worse.

H.Pylori Digestive Enzymes The medical profession believe that someone with indigestion is producing too much acid but most often, they are not producing enough. Stomach acid kills bacteria and softens proteins for digestion but forms only part of your gastric juices. Around the age of 30 people start to produce less digestive enzymes and often feel full, bloated and uncomfortable after eating.

Vitamin C Stomach acid is inactive without vitamin C and we are one of only three creatures that cannot make or store it. So if you don’t consume the vitamin on a daily basis your digestion will never be efficient. Ridding yourself of pain could be as simple as eating more fruit.

Chew

If you take antacid preparations when you are not over-producing acid then not only will you impair digestion and rob yourself of vital nutrients, you will also be inviting Helicobacter Pylori (the bacteria responsible for stomach ulcers) to take up residence.

People don’t chew enough and in my practice it shows. Sometimes during a colonic only undigested food is evacuated. When the pieces are huge (whole mushrooms are not unusual), food is not being chewed sufficiently to make digestion possible. This initially causes indigestion and later, when food ferments, bloating, flatulence and abdominal discomfort.

Spring Clean Your Drains If the plumbing fails in your house it’s usual to have the drains flushed. Your body is the same. Your entire digestive tract is a continuous tube with your mouth at one end and your bottom (the drains) at the other. If your drains are blocked or slow–moving, everything backs up and you start to suffer. Having a course of colonics can help improve digestion as well as freshening breath!

Sensitivity Food sensitivities are another major cause of indigestion, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, malabsorption, depression etc. If you’ve been suffering for some time, it’s worth getting checked out.

Free Consultation There are other causes of indigestion and lots of ways of dealing with the problem without reaching for the Gaviscon (and colonics are not compulsory!). If you would like to revitalise your digestive system and generally improve your health, book yourself in for a free half-hour consultation and a personalised action plan by calling Jane on 0113 3910415, texting 07974 218487or emailing info@detoxonline.co.uk.

Time spent with us is time well spent

I would never have guessed that my six week placement would lead to an amazing job writing about fashion and directing photo shoots with award-winning hair dressers, a professional photographer and beautiful models. It turns out, that dreams really do come true. The preparation for the photo shoot was time-consuming and demanding. But, gosh, did I enjoy it! With previous experience in writing about fashion, I knew exactly what photos I was hoping to get and Amanda, my photographer, was very good in understanding what I wanted to achieve with my feature. The clothes came together really well. My chosen hair and makeup artists were all up for the idea, being experienced with photo shoots and shows. The chosen venue, proved to be perfect for the trends I wanted to promote and the tone of the feature. Finally, the models I chose to work with were almost as excited as I was, which raised my expectations and made me look forward to the event even more. On the day of the photo shoot, I was thrilled to see everything come together nicely. The models turned out to be naturals in front of the camera, which made everything so much more enjoyable and fun. At the end of the day, I was happy with the outcome – I could not wait to start working on the beautiful pictures I knew we had achieved. Planning and managing the photo shoot was an amazing and valuable experience for me and I would like to thank MAD Publications for giving me this amazing opportunity. Also, special thanks to Caron from Caron Cobé, Maria from ISIS Goddesswear and Joan from Tip Toes for supplying beautiful pieces for the shoot, the team from Yazz for their exotic hair and makeup performance, Stuart and his team at Quebecs Hotel for allowing us to use their beautiful venue, Amanda from Cream Photography for donating her time and skills to my project and the gorgeous models for their time and smiles. See pages 14 and 15 for the Fashion Feature.

The story behind Here&Now Magazine’s fashion feature

When Natalie Cabaj, a journalism student at Leeds University’s Trinity & All Saints Campus in Horsforth, joined the team at Here & Now Magazine on a six week work placement, we immediately knew that we had another star in the making! Natalie threw herself completely into everything we gave her and anything we asked her to do, coming in early and working late and the odd weekend when we needed her to meet deadlines, in fact completely immersing herself with complete passion into her work. So when Natalie found out about the fashion feature we were introducing to the magazine, she asked if she could produce the features. I was bowled over by her energy and enthusiasm but not sure if she realised the amount of work involved, so I asked her to research and produce her first fashion feature for the February edition to see what she came up with. I have to say that it was great and we had good feedback from our readers. However, we wanted to progress on to using local models and fashion suppliers for the next one. True to form, Natalie volunteered to project manage the whole process. Natalie was amazing at finding the venue and everyone involved. The great thing about using normal girls as opposed to professional models is that we are able to show how today’s cutting edge fashions look on the people who actually buy and wear them rather than reflecting totally unachievable images on professional models who have also been airbrushed to within an inch of their lives. The girls in this feature are natural, beautiful local girls, made to look like models by the team from Yazz and the great clothes they are wearing. Natalie took complete control from the word go on the day. She was there before everyone else,

making sure that everything was in place, with a running order of the day and refreshments for everyone. We had two hair and makeup rooms, one dressing room and pretty much the full scope of the gorgeous bedrooms and other areas of Quebecs Hotel to use as our backdrops and settings. The day was hectic, frantic and exciting and certainly something we will be doing on a regular basis. The models themselves were also students at Leeds’ universities and friends of Natalie. They gave their time willingly to be pampered, preened and dressed in the most fabulous clothes from Caron Cobé Fashions in Yeadon and ISIS Goddesswear in Saltaire and shoes from Tip Toes of Guiseley. It was every girl’s dream Sunday! The girls were on such a high at the end of the day and didn’t want to waste their lovely hairdo’s and makeup so they all went out for dinner in Leeds to make the most of it. Well done girls, you were brilliant! At this point, I would like to sincerely thank everyone involved, especially those who gave up a whole Sunday to be there on the day. Paul Shakeshaft and his inspired team from Yazz Number One Hair Studios in Rawdon and Yeadon came along and created fantastic hair and makeup for the models on the day and Amanda Ramsey of Cream Photography did all of the photographs in a truly magnificent venue, Quebecs Hotel in Leeds, which provided some

stunning backdrops and settings for the models. Thank you to Stuart Ward, general manager of Quebecs for his cooperation, his hotel and the team looking after us were brilliant.

Yazz Number One Hair Studio hope to cut it in top hairdressing competition

H

airdressers use their knowledge of fashion and hair trends to inspire clients on a daily basis. Now it’s time for a team from Yazz Number One Hair Studio in Rawdon to take their creative vision to the catwalk to participate in the competition of a lifetime. Yazz Number One Hair Studio has won a place at the North Eastern Regional Finals of the L’Oréal Professional Colour Trophy 2009. They will join thirty-nine teams to compete in the world’s longest running, most stylish hair competition. To arrive at this stage, Yazz Number One Hair Studio saw off stiff competition from over 1200 salons with their stunning photographic entry and they are determined to go all the way to the grand finals in London. Charlotte Brookes from Yazz Number One Hair Studio says: “This is a live hairdressing competition and the atmosphere at the Regional Finals is electric. There’s an amazing air of hope and excitement, which is really inspiring. We will do everything we can to make it through to the grand final.” Adele Mason, also from Yazz Number One Hair Studio, became a regional finalist in the L’Oréal Professional Men’s image award category. Salon owner Paul Shakeshaft says: “What an amazing year 2008 was. I would like to say a really big thank you to all my team for all their hard work. What a great start this is to 2009.” On Wednesday 25th March the team will have just 30 minutes to create a winning look that is inspired by the Autumn/Winter 09/10 catwalk

collections. Their work will be judged by some of the most successful names in British Hairdressing before they find out who has scooped the title at a glittering award ceremony at Earls Court 2 on Monday 1st June. Hairdressing talent alone is not enough to win this incredible award. The hair, make-up, model and clothes styling must connect with razor-sharp precision to create an image that’s worthy of gracing the pages of a top fashion magazine. Globally renowned hairdresser Trevor Sorbie MBE is one of the judges that selected the Regional Finalists for this year’s event. Here, he explains what made the winning looks stand out: “I’m looking for an image that jumps out and makes me stop in my tracks. A successful photographic entry will show consideration towards every element – cut, colour, make-up, clothes styling and most importantly, the model. When they all come together, you see real professionalism and winning potential.” The overall winner of the L’Oréal Colour Trophy will pick up a once-in-a-lifetime prize package, which includes a photo shoot with British style bible Vogue in addition to countless opportunities that will firmly position them as Britain’s top colourists. “The pace of the competition changes gear at the Regional Finals,” explains hairdressing guru Charles Worthington. “It’s time to go live and this really separates the men from the boys. Working under pressure is the ultimate challenge and it takes a special kind of hairdresser to make it through to the grand final”

Fashion springs into summer

by Natalie Cabaj

While some trends come and go, others arrive to stay. The runways of late spring, early summer present a bit of everything. The eternal black is being used in new, creative ways in order to bring the colour to life. The fantastic piece that is the jumpsuit of the 1980s has made its way back to the catwalks, now more fabulous than ever. It has brought along with it a trend that combines a casual comfort with glamorous eveningwear and your sloppy clothes are now allowed to appear outside the walls of your home. An interesting addition to the fashion rainbow of 2009 is coral, a warm shade of orange, which allows for many combinations and outfits to be experimented with. While the seasons change form cold to mild, you are encouraged to dig into the fashions suggested by stylish designers and search for your own favourite pieces. With comfort being essential in choosing your outfit, fashion has never been more fun. Enjoy! Are you ready to jump? There is no better feeling than being comfortable in an amazing-looking outfit. With the sloppy yet fab trend, which is loved by designers and prominent on the runways of the spring/summer season, your comfort is key. Jumpsuits, harem trousers and baggy shorts are all comfortable pieces that, if worn correctly, are just as glam as your little black dress. It is time to upgrade your sloppy clothes to fabulous evening wear. When wearing a jumpsuit, it is important that you remember to emphasize your curves, so that your shape doesn’t drown in the loose clothing items. Wearing a belt or a ribbon at your waist will show off your femininity and bring attention to the narrowest point of your silhouette. Same goes for harem pants. The item is designed

14

to be loose around your hips and thighs and tight around your ankles, giving your figure a curvy shape. To enhance this feminine effect, you can wear the trousers with a tight t-shirt that hugs your body. Alternatively, wear your harem pants with a baggy top but bring in the outfit at your waist with a flashy belt or ribbon to ensure that you still look elegant and sleek. When the summer arrives, you will notice a fabulous design of shorts dominate the fashion world. Baggy shorts, which give your silhouette a curvy shape, will be an essential addition to your wardrobe this summer. Your shorts are meant to enhance the shape of your hips while it is up to your chosen top to show the shape of your waist and up to your shoes to elongate your appearance.

Black, always and forever Always a classic and stylish colour, black should never leave your wardrobe. However, in the summer, you will need to spice it up a notch so that it adapts to the brighter light and warmer weather. In order to suit this year’s summer trends, black is being used in many ways that calm down the drama of the colour. When putting together your beautifully black outfit, try to show a bit of skin – this will limit the dramatic effect and bring your outfit into the warm summer. Black chiffon pieces allow you to show a bit of skin behind the veil in a raunchy yet dignified way. Black garments can be decorated with broches, bows, embroidery and diamantes or heavy white-stone jewellery to tone down the colour and make it more

vivi d . Don’t be afraid to experiment with the silhouette of your black attire. Big round shoulders, loosely hanging sleeves or oversized tops and shorts will give your appearance a creative look. To emphasize your beautiful female curves, embrace your silhouette with a tight, decorated belt or large bow at the waist. A great way of using your black clothes is combining them with bright summer colours to add a fresh and energetic touch. Many gorgeous shades of all the colours you could ever dream of are available out there and black pieces can easily be married with colourful garments to add life to your outfit. A stylish pair of black trousers or a gothic skirt looks great with a colourful top. Try shades of hot pink or deep purple to stay within the gothic

However, the coral shade is open to diversity – don’t be afraid to mix it up and choose attention-seeking jewellery in a completely different colour to go with your warm, coral attire.

boundaries or go for a bright sky blue or a grass green to take the black colour to a much happier place. If you’ve got a gorgeous black top you would like to wake up, a colourful skirt or shorts will be ideal. Alternatively, find a pair of white trousers, leggings or jeans to give your black piece a lighter look.

Coral Following Patrick Demarchelier’s example, attention-demanding colours are prominent on the runway. From ocean blue and forest green to banana yellow and rosesare-red, these acidic shades of the rainbow are ideal to brighten up both denim and black. Among the most popular is coral, a soft shade of the warm orange family, which has entered the catwalks and has made its way into high street shops and fashion boutiques this year. Coral looks fantastic with dark denim and you will be able to find both tops and trousers in this fantastic new shade. With the sun daring to come out from behind the clouds, you can look forward to days when you can wear your favourite coral top with a fabulous pair of denim shorts – this outfit is the perfect choice for the early summer. You can also choose to put your coral item with something black. Orange tunics and tops look spectacular with black leggings. If you feel brave, you can dare to marry your coral pieces with other colours. Blocking the colours, with horizontal lines dividing the different shades, you have two options: pairing colours of the same family, for instance coral with curry yellow and mandarin orange or mixing your corals with contrasting colours such as royal blue and powerful purple. Underlining your outfit with a pair of flashy heels will complete your appearance. Remember that shoes are an essential part of your colour blocked outfit – whether you go for pumps, heels or sandals the shoes have to complement the entire outfit adding that extra little something. As for jewellery, coral looks fabulous with pearls. Pearl earrings, necklaces or bracelets are ideal as they add to the very soft tone of the colour.

With interesting styles such as the colour blocking trend, the glamorous jumpsuits and harem pants and the fab ways of using black and denim, fashion is going to be lots of fun this summer. You can comfortably be creative with your outfits, using bright colours combined with the traditional dramatic black or spicing up your casual clothes with sparkly bling and flashy heels. Make sure you introduce some coral pieces in your wardrobe - this warm shade will prove to be essential this summer. Clothes supplied by Caron Cobé, Yeadon, and ISIS Goddesswear, Saltaire. Shoes supplied by Tip Toes, Guiseley. Hair and makeup by YAZZ. Photos by Cream Photography.

However, Steve is also keen to point out that all the little nagging jobs that need doing, that you either never get round to due to time constraints or that you would prefer to have someone experienced do for you, will be undertaken and given the same high level of service, care and priority as any larger projects. Steve is sure that once you have had some work done by his company you will be fully satisfied and come back again like so many of his customers do. Keep it local and call S. Convert Your Basement into a with Hatchmore Space

B

asement conversions have never been more popular, with the stagnant housing market, expanding families and constant changing personal circumstances, people are starting to look at what lies beneath for more space, and thanks to modern techniques, a basement is dry, warm, energy efficient and airy; the perfect habitat to expand into. Hatchmore Space provides a complete design, project management and build service for basements and garage conversions. MD Phil Hatchett told us, “Scandinavian damp proofing technology came to the UK over 25 years ago and has consigned musty basement conversions to the archives of home improvement horrors.” Having been involved in the damp proofing industry for over 25 years, Phil has vast experience and has done hundreds of basement and garage conversions all over Yorkshire and the North West. Phil explained, “The system that we use in basement conversions can hold its own anywhere, it is even used to stop water penetrating the tunnels of London’s tube system. It is increasingly important to use a robust system of this kind given the extreme weather conditions we are experiencing.

22

I have done everything from a 4 metre square store to a ten room basement conversion comprising a snooker room, two bedrooms, lounge, gym and shower room; effectively a whole new floor to the house!” Phil set up his company to provide a service that people can trust, rely on and that exceeded their expectations every time. He succeeds in doing this with a carefully selected team of joiners, electricians, plasterers and plumbers, all with a focus on providing a dedicated, personal service. “The worst thing about the building trade is its reputation,” Phil told us, “people get so frustrated with tradesmen who don’t turn up when they say they will and then no one takes control if there is a problem. I deal with issues before they can even become a problem. I make sure my customers always know exactly what is going on and I pay close attention to every detail. As a result my customers are always delighted with the finished product and the way we have delivered the project.”

Free Roof Surveys Will Save You Money Roof Care and Maintenance “Free roof surveys will save you money”, says Julia Wilson of Bingley Roofing Contractors Ltd. She has contacted Here and Now Magazine to give readers the benefit of expert guidance on keeping your home’s roof in good condition. Many of us neglect to appreciate how important it is to maintain your home’s roof in good condition. It is difficult to know as we are not roofing experts and we think it is most likely to be expensive. In truth, the roof plays a vital role in keeping your house watertight and warm and should be inspected once or twice a year to ensure it continues to provide this important role.

How to Check Your Roof Most checks can be done from the ground level. Binoculars can be helpful and a neighbour’s property may also be a useful vantage point. Inspection through the loft access trap may show daylight penetration possibly caused by missing covering or damaged flashings. It is not advisable to attempt accessing and surveying the roof yourself as this presents many hazards. It would be recommended that a reputable and experienced roofing contractor carry out this on your behalf as they would have the suitable safety equipment. A good roofing contractor would generally carry out this quotation free of charge and then recommend any necessary works. IF YOU CHECK YOUR ROOF AS ADVISED, PREFERABLY BEFORE THE INCLEMENT WEATHER IN THE WINTER MONTHS, YOU WILL POTENTIALLY PREVENT WATER PENETRATION CAUSING DAMAGE WITHIN YOUR PROPERTY AND SAVE YOURSELF MONEY. REMEMBER, IF YOU ARE UNSURE, ASK A PROFESSIONAL ROOFING CONTRACTOR TO PROVIDE YOU WITH A ROOF SURVEY AND QUOTATION. THESE ARE USUALLY FREE OF CHARGE. A REPUTABLE COMPANY WILL ADVISE YOU ACCORDINGLY OF THE WORK THAT IS REQUIRED AND OFFER A GUARANTEE FOR ANY ROOFING WORKS THEY COMPLETE.

What to Look For Debris on the ground from broken slates, tiles or defective mortar indicates that there may be a problem. If you have missing tiles or slates, have them reinstated before damage occurs to roof felt, timbers or plaster ceilings. Moss, leaves and other debris can block gutters and cause the overflow of guttering, which can then cause damp to penetrate when running down the walls or to back flow into the roof area. Moss retains moisture, which may damage the roof covering, particularly if left on the roof in frosty weather. Careful removal is advisable and treatments are available to slow down reformation. Hips ridges and flashings can become detached in windy weather if pointing is not maintained. Look in gutters or gullies for signs of mortar droppings. Leaning chimneys or pots may need attention. Seek expert advice. Where a fuel fire is used check for smoke exiting through brickwork or at base of pots. Pointing and re-flaunching may be required. Many roof coverings such as lead or thatch require specialist repair. Do not use unskilled labour or quick-fix materials as these could cause greater long-term damage and greater expense.

As Spring approaches, our trees and landscape seem to come to life after the slumber of Winter. Homeowners begin to turn their ambitions to improving their outdoor property.

A

s Spring approaches, our trees and landscape seem to come to life after the slumber of Winter. Homeowners begin to turn their ambitions to improving their outdoor property. Pruning, the most common of all tree maintenance procedures, might be at the top of your list. Whether your trees are newly planted and young or towering and mature, they provide a homeowner with a surprising amount of value to the property - a value that increases with the condition of the tree from roots to branches. Some of the jobs are very straightforward but here’s a few things that you might not know. If you are looking at that overgrown hedge and wondering whether to trim it or cut it down and re-plant it, you must ensure there are no nesting birds in it. The RSPB recommend you avoid any cutting during the nesting season. As it is an offence under Section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to “intentionally take, damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built”, large penalties of up to £5,000.00 and/or six months imprisonment can be imposed for an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act in respect of a single bird, nest or egg. This is a long and complicated peace of legislation that protects all wild life. If you would like more information regarding birds, the RSPB website is www.rspb.org.uk.

26

Pruning your trees may also be a little more complicated than trimming hedges, for other reasons than just its size and shape. You must be aware of the legal restrictions that may prevent you having any work carried out. Your tree may be covered by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or within a Conservation Area. If so, prior consent must be sought before work is undertaken. More information can be obtained from the Leeds & Bradford City Council websites where you can also make an enquiry to check if a tree is protected. The Local Authority may prosecute offenders and fines of up to £20,000 for each tree destroyed may be imposed by the Magistrates Court. If you are prosecuted in the Crown Court, fines are unlimited. Trees Unlimited and any other reputable tree professional will usually undertake these searches and applications on your behalf.

Some small garden trees and fruit trees may be tackled by yourself if you feel sufficiently confident that the pruning you are doing will not have a detrimental affect on the tree’s health or appearance. The best time to prune is when the trees are dormant, during late Autumn and Winter as some, but not all trees, will “bleed” excessively in the Spring and early Summer. Some species such as Maple, Birch, Cherry, Walnut and Horse Chestnut will bleed extensively even during late Winter and therefore, it is advisable to prune these midlate Summer after the new growth has matured. If you are at all unsure, it is best to call a suitably qualified and experienced arborist for advice. Large trees in gardens are more complicated. The reasons for undertaking work on a larger tree are varied, from increasing the amount of sunlight into a garden to containing the size and shape of a tree. All work carried out on this type of tree requires a specialist. Many people claim to be expert arborists but it is important that you ask to see proof of Public and Employers Liability Insurance, qualifications for the task to be undertaken (referred to as Certificates of Competence) and if possible, obtain references from previous clients. Reputable companies will only be happy to offer you the above. We hope you have found this article of interest and we will be covering other areas in future issues. Please see our advert on page 21 for more details.

Acorn

Glazing and Building Services

A

corn Glazing and Building Services - your local family-run specialist in replacement doors, windows and conservatories - have built up a superb reputation in the area for fair pricing, excellent workmanship and great customer service and their integrity is second to none. They know that by adding a conservatory onto your home, you increase your leisure living space and add significant value to the property. This is a smart home improvement to make at a time when many homeowners are facing the growing demand for space and when selling and buying homes has never been more difficult. Many people actually decide against a conservatory because they think it will cost

a fortune and that it will be a long, drawn-out process due to planning permission regulations. Acorn want you to know that since October 2008, there has been a relaxation in planning laws, which means that smaller installations now qualify as ‘permitted schemes’. This means that homeowners don’t have to apply for planning permission, as long as the conservatory meets a set of conditions. Most importantly the conservatory must not extend more than three meters from the back of a terraced or semi-detached property and more than four meters from the rear of a detached home. The fact that you can now add a conservatory to your property without going through the often lengthy and laborious

planning process means that you can have the much desired addition to your home in less than two weeks! Being forced to ‘sit tight’ in a home that you have outgrown is very frustrating and conservatories remain an exceptionally costeffective way of getting that extra room, with an average conservatory priced at around £8,000. Compared to an extension, conservatories offer great value for money and make your house more desirable when you eventually decide to move. Perfection comes in many shapes and sizes. Acorn Glazing and Building Services can provide them all!

A Junior Pensioner

I 34

seem to have been exceptionally busy over the last few weeks, because a number of events seem to have occurred one after the other. When it was my birthday recently, I met up with five of my primary school friends. We all went out for lunch together to catch up on each other’s lives and, of course, to celebrate my birthday. The weekend after, Jeff treated me to a London Theatre weekend, where we spent one day going round the usual sights: along the Embankment, past the Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square with Nelson’s Column, Piccadilly Circus, then on the Underground

to cross the River Thames and visit the Imperial War Museum. Here we went through the simulated World War I Trench, complete with all the noises and smells which would have been present in those times – very impressive. Jeff was in his element looking at all the aircraft, tanks, guns etc used in World War II. You can spend all day in the museum and still not see everything. Then we went to see The Jersey Boys, telling the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. The music was tremendous, sounding exactly like the original group. Everyone loved hearing all the songs again: Let’s Hang On; Cherie, Cherie Baby; Rag Doll and all the rest of their hits. The theatre was full to capacity with a brilliant atmosphere and the crowd demanded encore after encore. The Sunday morning was spent going round Covent Garden where the usual opera singers perform outdoors in the basement café area and pavement artists juggle and carry out impossible acrobatic feats. Another weekend, I went to a Family History Fair in Port Sunlight, so I took the

opportunity to stay with our daughter for our usual girlie time that we like to have. She went with me to the fair and was amazed at many of the stalls relating to Family History requirements: specialist societies, family tree software and printing facilities, historical archive materials, book stalls, CD’s containing census detail, electoral rolls and other reference information, military history and medals stalls and many more. Whilst we were at Port Sunlight, we also visited the Lady Lever Art Gallery and the sculptured war memorials. We toured the fascinating village, where no two houses are alike, each having its own distinctive design. Last but not least, Jeff and I did another walk around Troller’s Gill near Barden Towers. It was a beautiful sunny day and the walk included dramatic limestone scenery, with stunning views over Barden Moor and across to Simon’s Seat and Great Whernside. A pleasant return journey followed the banks of the river Wharfe. This was in preparation for Jeff to lead this walk with our pensioners association in the next few weeks, when we will be continuing different outings with them over the coming year.

Helping your finances stack up in 2009

f your’e hoping to bring your finances up to scratch this year, Meridian Financial Services IFA Ltd are currently offering a free financial review. As fully qualified independent financial advisers we will come to your home or a location convenient for you, to help with all aspects of financial planning, alternatively you can visit our office in Idle.

TOP TIPS

You can ask about investments – including ISA’s, child trust funds, unit trusts and investment bonds, pre- and post retirement pensions and all aspects of life assurances to name a few of the services provided. To make an appointment please use to contact number below or contact us via our website at http://meridianfinancial.ifa-web.co.uk

Meridian Financial Services IFA Ltd has put together some tips to help make the most of your finances in 2009.

Manage your utility providers

Money can often be saved by switching gas, electricity, phone and broadband suppliers and also paying your bills by Direct Debit. But, before you consider switching company, do some research to find the best deal for you and challenge your existing provider to better its current offer – you may be pleasantly surprised what a company will do to keep your custom.

Wills

If you have not made a will, are you aware of the consequences your loved ones are left with on your death. Even if you have made a will does it still do what you want it to do? Meridian offer a will writing service and we would be happy to discuss this issue in more detail with you.

Tax Affairs

Every year, the government retains billions of pounds in unclaimed income support, housing benefit, council tax benefit, jobseekers allowance, pension credit, child tax credit and working families’ tax credit so make sure you claim your fair share. Also check your personal PAYE code reflects your current job – and if you’re over 65 years old – that your age-related personal allowances and deductions are correct. Visit hmrc.gov.uk for advice and helpful contacts.

Just because you’ve arranged your buildings and contents insurance, motor insurance and even pet insurance, and you feel that you have the correct levels of life assurance to protect your family, and any outstanding debts such as mortgages are covered so that they are paid of in event of death or critical illness that there is nothing further you can do. Competition is so great in these areas that companies are often trying to undercut each other to get your business. At Meridian we have sourcing systems that will tell us how competitive your current arrangements are and where possible how much money can be saved. Words of caution though, never stop a plan before you have confirmation a new arrangement is in place.

Do you need it?

Extended warranties, payment protection and insurance are often sold as add-ons to high value goods such as furniture or electrical appliances. But think hard before you accept – if you’re new appliance won’t last long, perhaps it’s not worth buying it in the first place. In addition, accidental damage to furniture or expensive items may be covered by your home contents insurance.

Savings

For 2008/9 your personal ISA allowance has increased to £7200 of which £3600 can be saved in a cash ISA. So no matter what your personal rate of income tax, income from these investments can be taken tax-free. Some building societies will provide better rates for over 50s and some offer good returns from offshore accounts, so always seek advice. If you have made investments a while ago, review them to see if they’re still beneficial.

Don’t be complacent with your existing arrangements

Retirement Planning

What effect has the current financial climate had on your pension arrangements, many people don’t like to think about it believing retirement is a long way off, but when you consider the amount of money that you may have tied up in pension plans should you be taking more time considering where the funds are invested, are you aware how much risk is being taken with your money and why.

One of a Kind Bradford Cancer Support is a local independent charity and has grown from strength to strength since the launch in 1988. Offering free support, help and information to anyone affected by cancer in the Bradford and Airedale area, the charity’s independence enables it to react to local changes in services very quickly which is great news for the users of the service. Everyone is at some point in their lives affected by cancer directly or indirectly and BCS exists to support patients, carers, families, friends and the bereaved. Working alongside the NHS and other healthcare professionals, BCS provides practical, social and emotional support – help and support when needed to the local community. The charity was founded 21 years ago as a large gap in cancer care was identified. Their beginnings were in Vicar Lane, later moving to Daisy Bank, nearer to the Bradford Royal Infirmary. As demand for the charity’s services increased, the premises at Daisy Bank became too small. Being near the hospital and close

to the patients was extremely important and in 2008 BCS moved into its new premises on Smith Lane at the back of The team at Bradford Cancer Support during the latest fund raising event the BRI, following the launch of the have the opportunity to broaden the help and Daisy Appeal in 2006. support they provide locally. An Idle Mum

T

his month I’ve been doing loads of decluttering. It’s amazing the amount of stuff that I’ve been hoarding, believing one day it will come in useful again. I’ve been doing a mixture of selling things on ebay (some things going for disappointingly low prices – obviously being a fantastic bargain for the buyer) and giving other things away on Freecycle. One of the most productive things I’ve done was sell lots of Ruby’s baby stuff (clothes and equipment) at the NCT (National Childbirth Trust) Nearly New Sale in Shipley earlier this month. My friend told me how she’d made over £100 at one last year, so as soon as I saw tables being advertised for sellers at this one, I booked a place. As the name suggests, it’s a place to sell things that are “nearly new”, so I spent ages packaging up items in polythene bags, clearly labelling what was in each one, what size it was and how much I wanted for it. My efforts definitely paid off as I made £65 profit and have gained lots of space that was originally taken up by the boxes and bags of stuff. However as quickly as I’m earning the extra money, I’m soon spending it. I’ve recently taken advantage of those Sun newspaper £9.50 holidays and booked us a week to France for later this year. Before submitting the application form, I did a comparison search on the internet, and found that I’ll be saving a few hundred pounds by using this offer. I’ve heard good reports about the holiday park where we’ll be staying, so fingers crossed that it meets my expectations.

Ruby had her first hair cut….ever….. about a month ago. Since she grew her first few hairs (she was bald until she was one), it’s quickly amassed into a head of golden curls. She’s always getting complimentary comments on her natural ringlets; however, brushing it became an absolute nightmare. So after reading something on the internet, I realised that having the dry ends cut off might in fact make brushing her hair less of an ordeal. I’m pleased to say that it has….slightly! Although she still moans over the slightest pull of her hair if the brush catches on a curl, her hair looks in much better condition and

generally, doesn’t get as knotty as it used to. We went to see my brother, Rob, in his last ever school musical (he’s completing his Alevels this year so will be leaving sixth form). He’s an absolutely brilliant actor and singer and was fantastic in Seussical the Musical; which featured the stories of Dr Seuss. Ruby loved seeing uncle Rob on stage and I was bursting with pride; he out-performed everyone else, as usual. Well done Rob, you were fantastic! I just hope that Ruby ends up with singing abilities like you and not me; I only sound good in my head.

Greengates School Fun Run

O

n Friday 20th March, Greengates Primary School ran a sponsored fun run. Mrs Patricia Gavins, Headteacher, was running the Keighley 10 km and decided it would be fun to organise a fun run in conjunction at the school. The children helped Mrs

REVISION GUIDE FOR PARENTS How To Reduce Revision Stress For Both You And Your Child

P

reparing for exams can be just as harrowing for parents as it can for their children. The urge to push your child to the best possible future can often lead to parental overkill and additional stress can actually end up damaging their exam results. With GCSE and A-Level exams fast approaching, Craig Halsall, Managing Director of Justin Craig Education , the market leader in Easter revision courses, recommends the following top tips for parents wishing to assist in their child’s revision:

42

• Provide appropriate space at home in which exam revision can be undertaken in private. For example, provide plenty of shelf space for revision materials, especially text books and notes, and sufficient desk space to work with • Strongly recommend short periods of revision – absolutely not longer than 90 minutes without a break. (Breaks should be regular and plentiful throughout the day – and most importantly enjoyed!) • Make revision a normal event that occurs regularly in the house • Communicate with other members of the family so that the personal space of the student remains quiet and books are not disturbed • Be available / on hand to give help during the revision period if it is requested – even if only moral support – it all counts! • Encourage revision to happen at opportunistic times – remember effective revision does not always have to be planned out days or weeks in advance • Actively encourage the display of key revision notes, posters and timetables around the house. For example, clear the family notice board and encourage your son or daughter to fill it with revision notes; do the same on the back of the bathroom door! • Let the student revise with relaxing music, but not the television or other distractions • Insist on plenty of sleep. It is an absolute priority that students go to bed at a sensible time • Encourage nutritious food and especially find time to provide a very healthy breakfast • Find time to listen to your son or daughter’s problems as this will help stop them from becoming too stressed • Provide them with the option of professional support in the form of a revision course, like those offered by Justin Craig Education

For more information on exam revision and preparation call 0845 0606 555 or visit www.justincraig.ac.uk.

Spring fever! As the days become longer and warmer, the plants around us start emerging from their winter rest to reveal their hidden beauty. But to some pets this is more of a ‘siren’ than ‘splendour’, as pollens are one of the main triggers of allergic skin disease. First to unveil are trees, with hazel and willow the early risers. Trees are followed closely by the spring flowers and weeds, and by late spring the grasses are pollinating too. This annual surge in pollens is linked with many seasonal allergies, and not only in humans! Many dogs, cats and horses also suffer – but their symptoms differ somewhat. Whilst humans sneeze, exposure to these pollens can leave your pet itching and scratching. So what can be done to alleviate these symptoms? First of all it is vital to identify exactly what is causing the problem, and the good news is that a small blood sample can tell us a lot! Knowing which pollen (allergen) is the culprit means it can be avoided or reduced. For example tree ‘culprits’ could be avoided by changing your walking route, and just keeping the lawn mown will prevent problematic grass pollens. however, it is difficult to avoid all pollens and treatment is often required. In addition to more traditional forms of treatment, one novel solution is to introduce a little of each allergen into the immune system by means of a desensitisation vaccine made up of the problem pollens. So – if your pet is prone to itching it could be an allergy; come and see us for a check-up!

SPRING 2009

NewS

The battle of the bulge! The long winter months are often a time of inactivity and weight gain for many pets. however, keeping our pets fit and trim is just as important for pets as it is for ourselves, since obesity is known to cause or worsen a number of conditions including arthritis, heart disease, and diabetes mellitus – to name just three! If you suspect that your pet has become a little too “cuddly”, the first thing to do is to arrange for us to weigh him or her. We will also give your pet a thorough physical examination to check for any medical conditions that can also result in weight gain (such as hypothroidism – see panel right). Although conditions such as hypothyroidism can be an issue for some pets, in the majority of cases there are no underlying medical problems and here we can advise you on the best form of X-ray of an arthritic weight loss programme for your pet. hip joint in a dog. The symptoms of arthritis So, if your pet is looking a little podgy are often much worse in get in touch since weight loss can make overweight pets. a huge difference to your pet’s health!

Hypothyroidism The thyroid glands, found in the neck, produce thyroid hormone which regulates your pet’s metabolism. Under production of thyroid hormone is called hypothyroidism and is a relatively common condition in older dogs. Lower levels of thyroid hormone result in a decrease in the metabolic rate, usually leading to weight gain and generalised lethargy. Other signs often include coat problems and recurrent ear and skin infections. Diagnosis of hypothyroidism can be tricky, but in confirmed cases, daily treatment with oral thyroid supplements are usually very successful in treating the condition.

Rabbiting on..... WiTh The onset of warmer spring weather, now is the time to protect your rabbit from the risk of infectious diseases – specifically Myxomatosis and Viral haemorrhagic Disease. Myxomatosis is a very distressing viral disease that affects both wild and domesticated rabbits. The virus is spread by blood sucking insects such as rabbit fleas and mosquitoes. The virus multiplies on the skin of affected rabbits, causing puffy swellings of the eyes, usually leading to blindness. Affected rabbits become very ill, often suffering from pneumonia and sadly most will die over a period of 10-14 days. Viral Haemorrhagic Disease is another highly contagious and very deadly viral disease. The virus is spread both by direct contact between rabbits, or via contaminated hutches, bedding or food and sometimes inadvertently by humans. Symptoms include loss of appetite, lethargy, nose bleeds and sudden death. happily we are now able to offer you protection against both of these deadly infectious diseases – please contact us now to arrange a health check and vaccination. While we’re on the subject of rabbits, don’t forget that another danger they face comes from flies. if your rabbit is allowed to get at all soiled around the bottom area, flies can lay eggs there which develop into flesh eating maggots within hours causing pain and sometimes death. So don’t forget to check, and if necessary clean, your rabbit’s bottom area daily and to seek veterinary advice if their droppings are too loose or too hard and predispose to soiling. And if you do see any signs of fly eggs or maggots – please call us straight away. Rabbit photo: Jane Burton

Marathon Update Debbie Hoos, 33 years old, Yeadon http://www.justgiving.com/debbiehoos

J

ust three weeks to go now until I will be competing in the Flora London Marathon, tackling the 26.2 miles around our capital along with thousands of other insane runners. Those of you who read the last edition of Here & Now will be aware of why I am doing the Marathon and why I have chosen to help raise awareness and money for The Lymphoma Association. Over the last year, I have watched a close friend, Vinny, battle through endless hospital visits and seen him endure lots of treatment and tests. Not only has he gone through a horrible, horrible time but his wife and two young children have been there every step of the way and I am sure that they have felt all his pain too. I am glad to say that things are looking very positive with the latest set of test results. However, we all know that full recovery is a marathon not a sprint! Lymphomas are cancers of the lymphatic system. When a person has lymphoma, some of their lymphocytes are ‘out of control’. They divide in an abnormal way, or do not die off when they should. These abnormal lymphocytes can collect in the lymph nodes, which then enlarge as the lymphocytes form tumours. I am now hopefully over the hard bit

of my training; it is now coming to an end with just a few short runs and lots of pasta eating left!!! Over the last 4 months I have been running on average 45 miles a week some solo and some with great support from my friends and fellows runners at Dragons Running Club. It has been said that doing the actual marathon is the easy bit, it’s the training before hand that’s hard!!! The highlight of my training has got to be when I completed the Rombolds Stride on the 7th February. This is a 25 mile walk, however, there is always a few insane people who decide to run the demanding course (me being one of them), which starts and finishes in Guiseley taking in Baildon, Ilkley and the Rombolds Moors. If the route was not bad enough, the weather did not help with snow up to the knees in some places. However, it’s nothing compared to what some people have to go through. When I was on the top of the very bleak moor, I took my inspiration from what Vinny has gone through and all those other thousands of people affected by cancer.

It has always been a dream of mine to run the London Marathon and after years of watching it on TV, I am going to be with the MASSES! My dream is finally coming true and I dare say it will not be easy. I am sure that at some stage during the 26.2 miles I will question why I am doing this. Hopefully, I will not hit the so-called wall. If and when things do start to feel tough, I will take my inspiration to battle through the miles and blisters from Vinny, after seeing him battle through the treatment with great courage and determination. You are a true inspiration, mate! I would like to thank all of you who have already donated to my Justgiving site. I still have a long way to go to reach my target, so please donate to my Justgiving site and help me get through all these miles. And most importantly, let’s make a difference!

A

s regular readers of the magazine will know, the author of this section, Stuart Hardy, sadly passed away on the 25th January 09 after a long battle with cancer. Stu was my best friend and it’s a loss I and many others are still trying to come to terms with. He was a larger-than-life character with a great sense of humour. Well, let’s face it, anyone who supports The Bantams and can still laugh and smile must have a sense of humour.

Stu was known affectionately as the ‘old goat’ - a nickname he was proud of. He was given an old goat as a joke and it still makes the journey to away-games sat on the dash board behind the SHIPLEY BANTAMS sign. The Shipley Bantams normally have a yearly charity push and we have decided this year’s fundraiser should be for the Marie Curie Hospice in Bradford where Stu spent his last few days. I visited him there and he couldn’t speak highly enough about the unit or the staff. His niece Sharon was his last visitor on a Saturday afternoon and told him the Bantams were currently losing 2-0 at Luton - a whole host

Two Old Goats! of swear words were forthcoming in true Stuart fashion. A few minutes after she’d left the room, a text message arrived on her phone to tell her it was 2-2. She doubled back and told Stu the news. So the last words we know he spoke (or shouted) were ‘YES! ******* get in there’. After knowing such a character for such a long time, you get to know them very well indeed. The word ‘no’ didn’t exist if Stu could see a solution. He would knock doors down to reach his goal. I suppose he was a fans’ version of a Bobby Campbell: hard as nails and uncompromising to say the least. I know he’ll be sadly missed by all his friends at the Shippers and indeed at BCFC. At his funeral there was standing room only left, a great turn-out on a snowy day with everyone wearing the claret and amber he so loved. The club was represented by Mark Lawn, Stuart McCall and the two sponsored Shippers players Micky Boulding and Paul McLaren. To say he would have loved that day is an understatement. Stu said to a very good friend of ours in his last few weeks: “Are you going to go to my funeral?” Of course the answer was “yes”. Quick as a flash he looked at her and said: “I hope you’re going to be at my party afterwards!” That’s just the sort of happy-golucky character he was. The home game after his death was amazing as the greatest tribute of all to him was a one minute standing ovation by 12,500 fans. I was on the pitch with his brother and will remember that minute till the day I join my mate. Halfway through the applause, a chant of ‘Stuart Stuart Stuart’ rang out from behind the goals.

A great tribute for a great mate. RIP Stu.

So from Mr Bradford City to Bradford City itself. Well, the business end of the season is upon us and the wheels seem to have come off. Not only have we had to encounter 4 straight defeats but we had Exeter and Bournemouth away in a 4 day period, almost twelve hundred miles of motorway and 5 goals hitting the back of our net had me questioning my sanity about following my team. Then a stunning home defeat to Port Vale just compounded our misery. All this coupled with wild rumours of a drinking culture and unrest within the camp at VP certainly didn’t help. Well, rumours always circulate around football clubs so let’s hope that at the time of writing this article, a line has been drawn under the silliness and we are back to winning ways for the final push up the table. Big Barry Conlon is now out on loan to Grimsby as his look-a-like Paul Mullin travels in from Accrington Stanley, maybe he can forge a partnership with Micky Boulding who recently stated at our last players meeting on the 23rd March that he always finishes the season off with a goals bonanza. Whatever happens, I know one thing is for certain: the ‘old goat’ will be sat up there in football heaven with that big daft grin on his face cheering the lads on. Here’s to a great run into the end of the season, a play-off spot followed by a great victory at the all new Wembley Stadium. See you all there, at Wembley that is, not heaven .

BIG DEAL FOR UNITED MIDFIELDER

By Paul Dewes

H

ughes, who has made 66 appearances since joining the club during a turbulent time at the start of last season, was sidelined with a hamstring injury but he returned to action in the reserves against Scunthorpe and is hoping to force his way back into the reckoning.

United midfielder Andrew Hughes has spoken of his delight after securing an additional year on his Leeds United contract. The former Norwich and Reading star received an automatic one-year extension after making his 18th appearance this season. “It was in my contract when I first came that if I made a certain amount of appearances in my second year there would be another year,” he explains. “I’m delighted to have reached that because this is a place I love being at and my family love the area as well. And under the new manager, it’s great to be involved.”

“I’m back fit and training now,” says the versatile 31-year-old. “I was in the squad for the games against Swindon, Yeovil, and Crewe and wasn’t involved but I can’t grumble about that because the boys have done well. That’s one thing about this manager - if you’re doing well you keep your place and keep the shirt. We’ve had a good run and there’s a good feel about the place. The manager knows how to get success. He’s done it at Blackpool, he’s got good staff around, bubbly players and at the end of the season we need all that. If we can start nicking wins away from home, it’ll set us up for a final push towards the end of the season.” Confidence is high in the United camp and while securing a Play-Off place is the main aim, the second promotion spot is also still up for grabs. Like the rest of the squad, Hughes is hoping to play in the Coca-Cola Championship with Leeds next season. “Fingers crossed,” he says. “I have a good feeling about it. The manager knows how to win games and sets teams to out win games.”

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FOR LEEDS A return to the Champions League may be a few years away for Leeds United but in figures released in March, Leeds United were ranked as one of the top four clubs in England. In a new report from Hitwise*, www. leedsunited.com was ranked the fourth most visited football club website in England in 2008. Liverpool emerged as the most visited with Manchester United coming in second place. Arsenal was the third most popular club website but after the Premier League trio came Leeds United. In terms of overall football sites visited in 2008, the club came seventh in the list, behind the three clubs listed and also trailing TeamTalk, FootyMad and premierleague. com. Tottenham Hotspur were the only other English team to make into the top 10. The club’s top four placing for 2008 follows a similar ranking for 2007 when www. leedsunited.com was also named in the top four most visited club sites in the country. Back then, the top three were Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool as well. www.leedsunited.com averages over 8m hits per month and has an average of over 500,000 unique visitors. Hitwise* monitors the habits of millions of web users and is one of the leading suppliers in the industry of hit measurements.

O’Brien Signs for Bulls

B

radford Bulls have beaten off competition from four other Super League clubs to clinch the signing of 15-year-old Adam O’Brien. O’Brien, who is a hooker, was formerly on Wigan’s Scholarship and had attracted offers from them as well as Warrington, Wakefield and Salford before committing himself to the Bulls. He hails from Halifax and played his Junior career at Siddal, where he was coached by former Bulls player Jon Hamer. Adam is from a sporting family and is the brother of current Bradford City First Team defender Luke O’Brien. Head of Youth Development at the Bulls, Paul Medley, is delighted that Adam has chosen Bradford Bulls: “We are really pleased that a player of Adam’s calibre has joined the club. He was wanted by four other Super League clubs but has chosen to come to the Grattan Stadium. I think we can offer him a genuine pathway and that is something he has recognised too. I feel Adam has all the attributes needed to play Super League in the future. He is a great person and comes from a great sporting family and I know they are very proud of what both Adam and Luke have achieved. Hopefully Adam can emulate his brother and play first team football for Bradford.” Adam O’Brien can’t wait to get his career at the Bulls started: “It’s really exciting to join such a big club like Bradford and I’m looking forward to getting going now. Luke’s told me when I get the chance to take it and show what I can do. With him making it into the first team at City, there’s a bit of competition there! We’ve always been competitive but close too so I’m really chuffed for him. He got his chance this season and has taken it and I want to do the same if one

comes up at the Bulls. I looked at the different Bulls sides and realised there’s a bit of opportunity here as there aren’t too many hookers around. Steve McNamara spoke to me and told me he wants to try and get me up to first team level as soon as possible and it’s just really exciting.” The Bradford Bulls 2009 Season tickets are now on sale and offer the best value for money.
