ow do we have some fantastic features and competitions for you in this edition! In our previous issue of Here & now we did a fashion feature using local girls, not professional models, local fashion specialists ISIS Goddesswear of Saltaire, Caron Cobe of Yeadon and Tip Toes of Guiseley, all very kindly provided the clothes, accessories and footwear, YAZZ Number One Hair Design did an amazing job on the girls hair and makeup and Amanda Ramsey of Cream Photography took all of the fashion photographs in the beautiful setting of Quebecs Boutique Hotel in Leeds. So we were wondering how we could top this when I was contacted by two local male models who have worked at the top end of modelling worldwide, they had seen the feature and wanted us to help them find local modelling talent through a competition! This is an amazing feature and competition, one that is open to everyone and is exclusive to Here & now Magazine. Read all about it on pages 22 and 23. With summer holidays just around the corner, whether you are staying at home or jetting off to more exotic locations, expert advice is available from Alyson Hunter of independent agent Travel Corner in Idle on page 32. Alyson tells us about the countries to visit where you will get much more for your money! If you are on a mission to improve your home in readiness for the property market upturn, then you will find the very best local tradesmen and businesses to help you do that within these pages. By keeping your business local you are using people you can trust, who can take you to view any jobs they have done, can provide recommendations and testimonials and will give you great value for money. very female I know is constantly striving to stay looking as young as possible for as long as possible without resorting to the surgeons’ knife! I am pleased to let everyone know that the answer is right on your doorstep...literally! Crescenza at Room 907, is the local specialist performing the award winning CACI International nonsurgical facelift treatment from her salon at Greengates. CACI is probably the most effective salon treatment system available, backed by over 20 years research, and has attracted a strong celebrity following in the UK.

I wanted to try the CACI system myself as like everyone else I am constantly in pursuit of eternal youth! I had a 15 minute skin consultation with Crescenza, where I was also able to ask questions and lay any concerns to rest. Crescenza’s professionalism is second to none and she explained exactly what I would be having done and how it would feel. I have to say that the treatment was never painful or even uncomfortable, in fact quite relaxing. Tiny electrical probes were placed at various points on my face and neck by Crescenza to tackle the problem areas identified in the consultation, the pulses were not painful at all, although my face felt as if it was doing facial gymnastics at times. To complete the treatment and get the very best result possible, I also had the Novita Skin Peel, this sounds drastic but it is actually a gentle yet very effective treatment to reduce the appearance of blemishes, acne scarring and facial scars, wrinkles and sun damage. For long lasting results a course of treatments is recommended, but looking at my reflection in the mirror after just one treatment I was absolutely ecstatic! My jawline and cheeks definitely looked lifted, and the peel had faded my fine lines and brightened my complexion beyond belief! These treatments may not be the as relaxing as your favourite facial but the results are staggering.

Special Offer So why not give it a try with a free consultation and your first CACI treatment at ½ price? What have you got to lose...except those lines and sagging skin! For further information or to make your booking call Crescenza at Room 907 on

Professor Schilders

Star Treatment

Mr Bollen

at The Yorkshire Clinic

Y

ou often read of top sportsmen and women jetting off to the States for treatment of their injuries but how many people are aware of the steady stream of the elite sporting world who make their way to this quiet corner of Yorkshire? Manchester United, Liverpool, Middlesbrough and Sunderland football clubs as well as the Bradford Bulls, Leeds Rhinos and Wakefield Wildcats are just a few of the clubs who bring some their players to the Yorkshire Clinic, to receive the very best of care from two of the UK’s most renowned specialists in sporting injuries. Who do they go to see? Mr Steve Bollen and Professor Ernest Schilders. Between them they have almost 30 years of experience in looking after elite sportsmen and women. Both lecture nationally and internationally in their specialist areas and they are constantly in demand as the leading experts in their fields. Little is known about the fact that they carry out the majority of their consultations and corrective surgeries on leading sporting figures and members of the public alike at The Yorkshire Clinic in Cottingley. Mr Steve Bollen, who has a special interest in soft tissue injuries of the knee and ankle, started to look after Bradford City and the Bradford Bulls in 1992. As his reputation spread, more and more clubs sent their players to see him. He now has every wall in his office covered with personally signed photographs from almost every sports person you can think of, thanking him for getting their careers back on track. Testament to his expertise and he is rightly proud

6

of every one of the images and thank you notes on his walls. Among Mr. Bollens accolades is the fact the he has been President of the British Orthopaedic and Sports Trauma Association. He also examines for the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine and has been Clinical Director of the Orthopaedic Department for the Bradford Hospital Trust for the last ten years. Professor Ernest Schilders joined the team in 1999, specialising in injuries of the shoulder, groin and hip. Professor Schilders trained as an orthopaedic surgeon in Belgium and the United States. He commenced his professional career at the University Hospital Antwerp and was subsequently appointed as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Bradford Royal Infirmary in 1999. His special interests are shoulder and hip arthroscopy and groin injuries from sports.

“” Between them they have almost 30 years of experience in looking after elite sportsmen and women.

Professor Schilders is recognised as one of the leading hip arthroscopists (examination of a joint with a device called an arthroscope inserted through a small incision in the skin) in the country and is currently conducting several large studies looking at

femoroacetabular impingement and instability of the hip. Professor Schilders is also a reviewer for the British Journal of Sports Medicine and Sports Medicine publications.Since 2008, he has been appointed as visiting Professor in Sports Medicine at Leeds Metropolitan University. Between the two of them, Professor Ernest Schilders and Mr Steve Bollens have successfully treated thousands of patients, both famous and everyday people who need them to repair their injuries, allowing them to lead a normal life again. Everyone knows that the Yorkshire Clinic is the place to go to receive the very best of private health or NHS care. It is a wellknown fact that some of the best cosmetic and reconstructive surgeons work there and now you know that the Yorkshire Clinic can offer a sports injury service too. There are plans to open a Centre of Orthopaedic Excellence in Spring 2010. You can find out more about Mr Bollen by logging onto the following website: http://www.stevebollen.co.uk For further information about Mr Steve Bollen or Professor Ernest Schilders and their specialist areas, call 01274 550621. f you want to know the key to business success in this extremely challenging climate, look no further than The Tanning Lounge, Greengates. Owners Clare McNally and Gordon Lamb certainly have the winning formula: believing that you get out what you put in. This is why The Tanning Lounge is open seven days a week until late into the evening. It is also probably the cleanest, friendliest and most cosmopolitan tanning salon you will come across. The colours in the salon radiate pure summer even on the darkest, coldest or rainiest winter day. Customer care is paramount and every client is greeted by name and provided with clean towels and brand new disposable goggles to wear on the sun beds, all completely free of charge. There is also a member of the team always available to advise you on the best type of sun bed to use, depending on your skin type, giving you optimum tanning results in the safest possible environment. Cleanliness, hygiene and skin protection are high on the list of priorities and no one is allowed to use a sun bed unless it has been thoroughly cleaned by a staff member. Advice is also given on usage of tanning accelerator, which not only speeds up tanning results but more importantly keeps your skin hydrated and helps prevent any drying out or premature aging of the skin. The sun beds themselves are top of the range and completely EU Safety Regulation compliant, which means they meet the highest safety standards in the country, something all

tanning salons will have to do once the EU safety laws are legal in the UK, The Tanning Lounge is ahead of the game. The Tanning Lounge uses the latest UWE i-sun lay down sun bed, imported from Germany, providing the latest cutting edge technology available on the market today. You can also opt for a state-of-the-art stand up tanning cab. It’s all down to personal preference and skin type. They also provide an expert service in spray tans for clients who want an immediate, natural-looking tan for a special occasion. Using Fake Bake over the past year, word has spread about the fantastic finish they create. This is helped by the fact that the specialist spray booth you stand in has a strong extractor system to help give an even, flawless finish. You would be wrong to think that tanning is all that’s available at The Tanning Lounge. Clare continues to offer much more than her competitors. You can have your teeth whitened with the Pearl White Laser System, experience beautiful eyes with Hollywood Lashes and follow the current celebrity trend to have Minx Nails. Minx Nails are a vinyl film in numerous colours and designs that can be applied to your hands and toes, following in the footsteps of Rihanna, Pink and Beyonce and they look absolutely stunning. Feel Great Lose Weight Slow Deterioration

From Bad to Worse

The diarrhoea however didn’t go away. I carried a backpack everywhere with my toilet essentials and had a mental map of decent loos in Melbourne. My joints and muscles hurt constantly and I felt as though I needed oiling in the mornings. My weight crept up. I was tired all the time. But I was overseas on an adventure so I pushed myself to go out in the evenings and after a few beers usually felt OK.

Although I recovered, for the next few years I was never really well. My weight ballooned, I was bloated, depressed, had chronic diarrhoea, caught every bug in circulation, had painful joints and muscles, was always tired, felt grubby (I couldn’t really explain it to anyone but it felt as though my blood was dirty) and sometimes had to use a walking stick.

Unidentified Illness

My Daily Bread

A Food Sensitivity Test Changed Everything!

I never realised my health was not great until I was lucky enough to discover what really good health feels like. I had been experiencing some apparently unconnected health problems for a number of years. Ultimately, despite numerous tests, the hospital doctors concluded that my immune system was fighting something they just did not know what or where.

Each evening on my way home I called into a bakery that sold amazing bread and enjoyed a couple of slices whilst preparing my evening meal. Little did I know the bread was pushing me to the brink of a health crisis.

Overweight, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, depression, weight loss, anxiety, indigestion, eczema, recurrent infections, feel generally under the weather or have symptoms which have defied diagnosis? A food sensitivity test could help to restore your health.

It All Started With a Tummy Bug My health really began to deteriorate when I got a stomach bug whilst visiting the Phillippines en route to university in Australia. I wasn’t unduly concerned at the time: I had diarrhoea but nothing I couldn’t cope with.

10

with detox

Poisoned Blood Towards the end of the semester, as my finals approached, I started to feel very unwell indeed. At my last exam I knew there was something seriously wrong when I could read each word on the paper but couldn’t understand the sentence. Ten days later I was in hospital being told that my survival was nothing short of miraculous. I had a massive infection in my colon which had poisoned my blood, my body was in shock and my organs were beginning to fail.

My life was beginning to feel pointless until I had a food sensitivity test which highlighted a number of problematic foods including wheat. Within a month of starting the elimination programme I was 22lbs lighter, happy, pain free and with normally functioning bowels. The battle my immune system had been fighting was finally over!

My doctor didn’t believe in food sensitivities; I believe the food sensitivity test saved my life. Don’t suffer in silence just because you keep getting told there’s nothing wrong with you. Food sensitivities can have a devastating effect on your life.

For more information about food sensitivity testing please contact Jane on 0113 3910415, e-mail info@detoxonline.co.uk text 07974 218487 or visit www.detoxonline.co.uk

D Pudsey Gym Beats Credit Crunch

espite the current tough economic conditions, one local gym has gone from strength to strength. LadyZone ‘Your 30 minute relaxed workout’, opened in Pudsey 18 months ago and due to the popularity of the concept, is now doubling its capacity by investing in brand new air resistance equipment. Karen Halifax, owner of LadyZone says “The response we’ve had to the gym from local ladies has been overwhelming. Unfortunately the downside to this success is that the gym has been getting increasingly busy. To ensure we maintain our standards of service to our existing members, while still having enough capacity to attract new members means that it’s crucial we invest in new equipment.” She believes that the success of the gym is down to several reasons. “The concept of the gym is unique in this area. Ladies can get an exercise programme that is tailored to their individual needs that they can do in just 30 minutes. Anyone can find 30 minutes, 3 times

a week to look after their exercise needs. The instructors also have regular reviews with the members to monitor their success and to ensure they are happy with everything.” ”Secondly the environment in the gym is unlike most conventional gyms. The emphasis is to create a friendly, supportive atmosphere. All of our members are just normal women who want to get fitter and lose some weight – and most like to have a good laugh while they’re doing it. It’s a real sociable place where ladies of all ages get together.” Karen believes that the final reason for LadyZone’s success is that membership is reasonably priced – around half what you’d expect to pay at a conventional gym – and there are a range of options to suit anyone’s budget. She adds, “It’s a really exciting time for the gym and it’s lovely that our members are pleased to play a part in its success. One of the main ways the business has grown is through word of mouth and I’m really grateful to all our members for their continued support.”

SPRINGS Holistic & Beauty Spa

“TheMostFantastic,Relaxing,Holistic BodyMassage.. ever!”

Springs Holistic and Beauty Spa 15 Town Street The Steep Yeadon LS19 7EQ 0113 2506262

I

have just experienced the most fantastic, relaxing, holistic body massage... ever! I was so impressed by the write up in Here & now Magazine on Faye Scarborough and her holistic and beauty spa, Springs in Yeadon, that I immediately booked myself in for a full body massage. Being in desperate need of a bit of pampering and relaxation, I was actually unsure if Faye would be able to work her magic on me. My stress levels were through the roof, I constantly had a banging headache, my stomach was in knots and I wasn’t sleeping very well. The current climate brings us all the same problems to worry about - mainly job security, paying the bills, finding new ways to make your money go further and trying to avoid debt... Need I go on? Stress affects us all in different ways and some stress is good for us, apparently, but constant worry and running yourself ragged is never good for anyone. For me there just never seems to be enough hours in the day to re-charge my batteries and having a little ‘me’-time was unthinkable. So when I read Faye’s feature, I was pretty low and exhausted but the testimonials from some of her clients made me want to feel the same benefits that they had. I did not know what treatment to have but knew I needed something! So I called Faye and told her about the situation and how I was feeling and she immediately said that I should go for the full body massage, which uses hot stones and essential oils, individually blended for each client’s requirements. The price was reasonable too and I liked the sound of Faye - she sounded as if she really cared about my situation and genuinely wanted to make me feel better. I was booked in and even on the day

of the massage, I was running around like a headless chicken, in two minds whether to cancel the treatment because “I just don’t have time!” Then I thought: “make time, you can only feel better than you do now.” My oh my, I am so happy I went. The moment I met Faye, I knew I had made the right decision. She has such a lovely nature and gives off good, positive vibes. I was shown into a dimly lit treatment room where essential oils and candles were burning and there was a superb relaxation CD playing with sounds of water, whales and birds, I instantly felt more relaxed. Faye left the room while I undressed and lay on the bed and when she returned, she took time to explain exactly what the treatment entailed and the benefits I could expect to experience afterwards. Two of them were to be

a good night’s sleep and a clearer mind to be able to focus and cope better on a day to day basis. I couldn’t wait. I had never had a full body massage before and I have to say that it was one of the best treatment experiences I have ever had. I was relaxed in minutes, so much so that I fell asleep and woke up dribbling, convinced I was on an exotic beach somewhere, far away from credit crunch woes. I might as well have been because for 80 minutes, it was pure bliss. The experience was so good that I have decided to treat myself to a full body massage on a monthly basis. I deserve it and my family, friends and work colleagues deserve to have a more relaxed, in-control me too! Feeling in need of a little TLC yourself? Call Faye at Springs Holistic and Beauty Spa in Yeadon. I don’t care where you live, it is well worth the journey and everyone deserves some ‘me’time! Faye says: “Our mission is to provide a journey of relaxation and sheer indulgence for every person who walks through the door. Nothing less is accepted by myself or my team.”Why not try Springs Holistic and Beauty Spa yourself and take advantage of this very generous Here & Now Readers’ Offer of 20% off all treatments. This offer is only valid on production of this advert and is limited to one treatment per person. Call Faye on 0113 2506262 for more information or to book your treatment appointment. Make sure you mention the Here & Now Offer at the time of booking.

manda Warrington won Yazz retailer of the year and Jess Farrell won employee of the year. The reward for their hard work and commitment was the trip of a lifetime to Barbados – an adventure in paradise! Days were spent lazing on the sandy white beaches gazing out into the turquoise ocean, enjoying exciting speed boat rides, experiencing breathe taking views, watching the turtles and checking out how Billionaires live. Evenings were spent relaxing in the local fishermans pub, with the local people enjoying fish caught fresh that day and watching the limbo dancing . A big thank-you to Paul Shakeshaft, the salon owner, for providing such a wonderful incentive for the Yazz Team every year.

Global Success

for leadingYorkshire Beauty Therapy College

L

eeds-based Yorkshire College of Beauty Therapy (YCOB) has further enhanced its already impressive International reputation by gaining a prestigious contract from the Social Development Center (SDC) which is part of the Qatar Foundation (QF) an organization responsible for leading the field in education. Selected from more than twenty other schools and colleges from around the world, YCOB’s founder and Principal, Christine Tilley, will be responsible along with her Management Team for setting up and running a beauty academy in Qatar. She will work alongside the Social Development Centre board of trustees, a team who are looking to raise the bar in educational standards for women in the Middle East and to legislate the industry and provide vocational and non vocational courses. The first of its kind in Qatar, from October 2009 the beauty academy will be open to nationals and nonnationals alike and offer Internationally recognized qualifications in Beauty Therapy, Aromatherapy, Physical Therapy, Massage, Hairdressing and make up. Like its UK counterpart, it will also feature a large commercial salon to be situated within Education City. Education City “a centre of excellence for training” was set up by the Qatar

Foundation whose chairperson is the Emir’s wife Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned. Education City is a specialist campus attracting top international universities and colleges. This enables students to do international courses within their own country and also to attract students from other middle eastern countries.

“” A perfect place to study as a school leaver...

A college renowned for its excellence, YCOB has been offering leading beauty therapy courses since 1983 to CIDESCO, ITEC and CIBTAC level. Boasting state-of-the-art facilities for learning, graduates of the college are well known for being of the highest quality. A high proportion have gained employment in some of the world’s most up market establishments, headed off on luxury cruise liners and carved a niche for themselves by opening their own business. The college was also featured on Sky in 2004 when a fly-on-the-wall documentary, Beauty School, followed

staff and students at the college for a period of one year. With full- and part-time courses on offer (full time taking between 10 and 12 months to complete), YCOB leads the way in providing in-depth specialist courses. Favouring quality over quantity on every level, class sizes are kept small and the highly qualified teaching staff are dedicated to ensuring students receive consistent levels of tuition. With a shortage of good quality training in beauty therapy in the UK, the college is perfectly placed to meet this need, and offers a wide range of international courses as well as the highly regarded Advanced Apprenticeships. A perfect place to study as a school leaver, YCOB also attracts people looking for a career change or to re-train after redundancy. With a high success rate in employment after training, YCOB is becoming an increasingly popular destination for those seeking to change the trend in an otherwise unstable job climate. So if you’d like the very best start to a career in the beauty industry, why not find out what YCOB could offer you? aighten Out Your Finances with

MERIDIAN FINANCIAL SERVICES IFA LTD

In today’s turbulent financial marketplace we get telephone calls and requests for help from many new and existing clients. We have printed below a selection of questions that clients have recently asked us. Queries range from the relatively simple and straight forward to those that are quite complex and technical and may require input from specialists whose knowledge is available to our clients.

How much can I take from pension pot?

How do I track down my lost pension?

How can I claim forgotten cash?

I am 59 years old and would like to take lump sum from my personal pension of approximately £40,000. How much am I allowed to take? Meridian, replies: You can take a maximum of 25% as a lump sum which is also tax free. So, given a personal pension pot of £40000, you can take up to £10,000 as cash but the remaining £30,000 must be used to provide an income for the rest of your life. Given your age, the annual amount is not going to be very great. You need to shop around and get the best deal available. The difference between the best and worst rates can be substantial, maybe as much as 30% to 40%. And of course, this is for rest of your life. When the time comes to convert a personal pension into an annuity it is important to remember you have the right to look beyond what you may be offered by the company you have been saving with. This is known as the open market option. Failure to exercise that right could reduce your income in retirement by a significant amount each week. Unfortunately, when you have made your choice you cannot go back later and switch to a company that would have paid you more at the outset.

I have three pensions through three companies I have worked for. I am up to date with two of them, but have lost contact with the third company, which I think is defunct. How can I find out what this pension might be worth? Meridian replies: Pension benefits from even short periods of employment can run into many thousands of pounds. The Department for Work and Pensions runs a tracing service, which is the best place to track down a former occupational pension. Call 0845 600 2537 or visit www.pensionsservice.gov.uk. Also, do not underestimate the importance of your State Pension. For a free forecast, go to the same website.

I have found my old bank account book which has had £3.00 in it since 1984. Will the money have increased with interest and how can I claim it? Meridian replies: The process of tracking down forgotten savings has been greatly simplified since the launch of the website mylostaccount. org.uk. It offers a free tracing service for dormant accounts provided by the British Bankers’ Association, the Building Societies Association and National Savings and Investments. Together they represent most of the providers of savings and current accounts. The site will take you through the process in easy steps and, as you have the original share account book, tracing the money should be straightforward. There is a form you can download or if you prefer, you can ask to have a form sent in the post from one of the addresses in the online guide. As to whether your account will have grown, normally: ‘A dormant account continues to earn interest at the appropriate rate for the account and the funds within it remain the property of the customer no matter how many years pass.’ Beware of building up hopes of a windfall. The interest rate on the account has almost certainly been very low and despite 25 years of growth you’ll be lucky to see more than a fiver.

ew people show the passion and dedication to the care of their animals as Clare and Gordon of the newly opened Pet Store at New Line, Greengates. Here is a local couple who have turned their love of animals into a successful business and one that has quickly gained a reputation as specialist breeders of beautiful rabbits, hamsters, gerbils and guinea pigs. However, this is just the start; the next phase will see a full wall of reptiles including Bearded Dragons, a variety of snakes, Tortoises and Tarantulas! They tested the water with exotic animal foods such as frozen mice, frozen rats, live crickets, locusts and mealworm, plus selling exotic animals complete starter kits, all of which proved that there is a large gap in the

market locally for such a specialist. They aim to become a superb ‘one stop shop’ for the needs of any pet. The wealth of knowledge Clare and Gordon have about animals and reptiles is astounding and they are so passionate about each animal’s welfare, they insist that if anyone buying an animal from them finds it unsuitable, they must return it back to them to be re-homed under their supervision! The Pet Store offers advice on the care of most breeds and knows exactly what feed will keep them in tip top condition. They can also share their knowledge on successful breeding of the most difficult of species. Maybe you have a ‘pampered pooch’ and want the latest Puchi designer pet

wear… yes, that is also available at The Pet Store. No matter what your pet requirements, it will be provided by Clare and Gordon. If you want something they don’t have in stock, you can be sure they will get it for you! Having thought of absolutely everything, a delivery service is also available and being open seven days a week, with prices to compete with local supermarkets on pet food, it makes sense to support this local business, buy what you need from them at no extra cost and have a great experience while you are there! So whether you are a new or experienced animal or reptile owner, The Pet Store is definitely worth a visit, and this hidden treasure will be hidden no more!

Do You Have What it Takes? “You too could be the next big star in the world of modelling! “ So say Matt Bates and Sean Hopwood, two local male models who have 20 years of experience between them working at the highest level of modelling, which has taken them all over the world on assignments. Matt told us: “With our combined experience in the modelling industry, between us we have done pretty much every kind of modelling job there is. What most people don’t realise is the diversity of the modelling industry. We have done catwalk fashion shows, appeared in several commercials, music videos, TV shows and even films.” Sean adds: “Representation from some of the most reputable agencies in the UK has enabled us both to have a client list of world famous brand names such as Lacoste, Harrods, Harvey Nichols, UMBRO, Adidas, Armani, Ping Golf, Henri Lloyd, Magners, Clarks, Next, Manchester United FC, Paul Smith, Babyliss and Hilton. In fact, the list is endless.” Here are their stories.

Matt Bates

Matt Bates resigned from being a credit controller 15 years ago after being spotted in Leeds by an agent. Matt actually thought it was a joke at first. However, when he realised it was a serious approach, he went to see the agency and started working the next day, being paid £300 to model socks! There was no looking back from then on and Matt joined Nemesis in Manchester, a model agency owned by the manager of Take That. Matt needed to have some test shots done and was initially very nervous but enjoyed the experience and felt ready to take on the world of modelling. Work came thick and fast with assignments in Miami, Spain, Portugal, Germany, France, Italy, Dubai, Egypt, India and Canada. The diversity of each job has kept 15 years at the top end of modelling both challenging and fresh for Matt, who, as an aspiring footballer, relished his favourite job was playing football at La Manga for two weeks, modelling for the Umbro catalogue. “I felt like a pro!” he says. Matt’s first catwalk shows were for Ted Baker. He was really nervous but found it to be great fun. Matt is now signed to agencies all across the country and Europe and along the way has had help and advice from many models. Now it’s his turn to help the next generation.

Vogue Seminars As a youngster, Sean Hopwood never imagined making a career out of modelling. It all came about one normal day in Manchester when he was just doing the usual ‘having a wonder around town’, and was approached by a model scout who gave him a leaflet with some information about joining an agency. “So I thought, why not,” Sean says. “After 2 years of reasonable success with the agency, I thought it was time to really have a go at it. There was a competition I had heard about called ‘The Face of Manchester’, which I entered. After a month of voting, I reached the final, which was held at one of the most prestigious clubs in Manchester. The final was to be a fashion show judged by a panel of top agents in Manchester and FHM representatives. After the show, the models all gathered on the stage and a male and female winner were announced. To my amazement, I was the male winner - it was a fantastic moment. From this I gained a contract with a top agent in Manchester and enjoyed 5 years of success working in Manchester Fashion Week and high profile events such as the Bollywood Oscars. I also got modelling contracts with companies such as Harrods, Flannels, Harvey Nichols and Manchester United. I have had a great time over the last ten years whilst earning a good living and meeting some amazing people. The experience and knowledge of the industry I now have is vast.”

The way both Matt and Sean were ‘discovered’ seems the thing of fairytales. While it can and does happen, you won’t always be in the right place at the right time as they were and this is why Matt and Sean have decided to start their own company, Vogue Seminars, to help local aspiring models achieve their dream. They aim to give a detailed insight into the modelling industry, showing all types of opportunities available and giving tips regarding approaching agencies and attending castings, while also pointing out the major pitfalls to watch out for and scams to avoid; all invaluable to anyone with a desire to entre the world of modelling. However, the courses are also designed to appeal to anyone who just wants to know how to hold themselves and walk correctly, feel comfortable in front of a camera, use all the tricks of the trade through styling, how to use makeup and self promotion to build their confidence. All these things can be brought into play in job interviews and at social occasions where you might feel out of your depth. Vogue Seminars will provide you with the following: •

Confidence in front of the camera, professional or otherwise, and show you how to hold yourself and walk on a catwalk.

An in-depth knowledge of how the modelling industry works and where you best fit in.

A professional image to start your portfolio or as a memento of your experience.

A fantastic goody bag worth £100, containing 3 day passes to David Lloyd Health Club worth £45, an exclusive privilege card guaranteeing 15% discount off Envy, Faith and Chilli Pepper clothing ranges, a selection of Clarins sample products, discount from all treatments at Yazz Number One Hair Design in Rawdon and Yeadon, discounted entry into all Vogue events and free VIP entry into Chilliwhites in Leeds on Fridays and Saturdays.

All of this for only £30 per person (introductory rate). Here & now Magazine have negotiated a reader rate of £25 per person, so make sure to quote Here & Now when you book your place on the course to receive your discount. The duration of a seminar is 3 to 3 ½ hours and the first one is on 9th July at Chilliwhites in Leeds. To book a place at the first Vogue Seminar or for further information on other seminar dates and venues in the Yorkshire area, please call Matt Bates on 07973 511927 or Sean Hopwood on 07832 296329. f you are pulling your hair out wondering what you have to do to increase your business in the current economic climate, look no further than Women with Vision! Now in our second year, our networking group of ladies in business, or ladies representing a business they work within, is proving to be absolutely invaluable. Don’t get the wrong idea though, you only get out what you put in and for those members who regularly attend the monthly meetings, they are reaping the rewards through new business leads which they would never have had or known about if it wasn’t for the proactive way Women with Vision members work. The format is very focused but is also great fun. Meetings are always held at a local quality venue such as YoYo’s Bar and Restaurant in Shipley and Marriott Hollins Hall Hotel and Country Club in Baildon where from 6pm until 6.45pm members and guests register and enjoy an excellent buffet before the formalities of the evening start with three member presentations and a speed networking session! Member presentations are designed to give everyone a good understanding of the type

of business each of them have and what kind of business they are looking for, which in turn enables the members to refer business leads much easier through their own networks of family, friends, colleagues and business contacts. Speed networking adds an exciting, fun element to the evening where we follow the principles of speed dating, giving each person the opportunity to spend two minutes at a time with other people in the room, over 30 minutes duration. During each two minutes they have to find out as much about each others businesses as possible and book one to one meetings with those they have a business synergy with, in other words their businesses can feed referrals to each other, such as a florist and a wedding planner, a wedding planner and a wedding venue, a wedding venue and a training company running regular courses and needing a venue...get the idea? If you want to know when our next meetings are then don’t waste any time, email angela@madpublications.co.uk for further details, or call 01274 420091. These pressures come from a number of sources: • Banks reducing or pulling overdrafts and or loans • Pressure prior to the renewal date for an overdraft • Crown liabilities of VAT/PAYE/Corporation Tax and Self Assessment • Council tax is a common creditor, who will aggressively collect but is often open to arrangements if a dialogue can be established • Debtors paying late. ello and a welcome to the Eccleshill Neighbourhood Policing Team, based at Javelin House, Eccleshill, (opposite Morrison’s). The team covers a large area of north eastern Bradford. More pertinent to you within the area, I am your local policing team Inspector and have responsibility for the Apperley Bridge and Greengates areas. I am supported by a team of sergeants, police officers and community support officers. We are committed to providing a quality of service which resolves issues within your areas. Whilst we would like to think that most problems can be resolved at a local level with all those involved talking the issues through, we along with our other partner agencies have the means to adopt alternative resolution strategies from mediation to enforcement. In line with the policing pledge point 3, (outlined below) we would like to hear your views and opinions about how we can assist in making the place you live a much more pleasant place to be. Also in line with point 7, I would like to draw your attention to two public contact points, local to your area where members of my team are highly visible and willing to hear your problems. These are at Sainsburys at Greengates on the 4h Saturday in the month between 11am and 1pm, and Morrisons(Five Lane Ends) on the first Sunday of every month between 2 and 4pm. Finally, I would like to point out an alternative means of contacting my team via e-mail and the office number. I want to stress that this number does not replace the 999 system for emergency calls, but instead is a means of contacting the local team. The telephone has a message facility whereby if the call is not answered, then any messages left are checked regularly and referred to relevant officers. The office number is: 01274 376168 e-mail: hanpt5@westyorkshire.pnn.police.uk

Summer Holidays without the Euro By Travel Corner

Why not take your summer holidays in a country where you do not have to worry about poor exchange rates? Holiday makers visiting countries, which use the Euro are going to find that they are not getting real value for money and increasingly, tourists are looking for alternative destinations. Whilst the trips to the moon are only in the planning stages why not visit one of the two non-Euro destinations featured below:

Croatia

Croatia is located in South Eastern Europe washed by the clean, clear waters of the Adriatic and has more than a little of the Southern Mediterranean charm. Its summer months of July, August and September boast temperatures reaching 30 degrees with minimal rainfall. There is plenty to see and do for everyone in Croatia from its national treasures including Roman relics, medieval walled

Bulgaria has surprisingly remained a well kept secret until recently. It is found in South Eastern Europe occupying the central part of the Balkan Peninsula. Bulgaria boasts miles of golden sand next to the Black Sea which are a Sun Worshipper’s haven and again have the dense rolling forests forming a beautiful backdrop to the beaches. Bulgaria has many historical sites, ancient cities and picturesque villages to visit. The two main resorts are Sunny Beach, which is a

he latest of our Pensioners’ Association trips was to Bowness in Windermere. Those of us who were to be picked up in Leeds gathered in the bus station to shelter from the rain. It seemed to be the crack of dawn to us, as being pensioners we are no longer accustomed to being up and about in the centre of Leeds just after 8.30am. After collecting the others in Seacroft, we went on our way on the coach, watching the black clouds gathering through the windows and the rain pouring down as we sped along. We’d been up so early that we got hungry, so we had some sandwiches and flasks of tea on the coach. When we reached Haverthwaite, the sky began to clear. We happily piled on to the steam train and enjoyed the short ride to Lakeside. Here, we watched the boat come in from down the lake. We were all pleased that the sun came out as we boarded the boat. Sitting on the top deck, we had excellent views as we cruised along, marvelling at the lovely gardens surrounding the lakeside homes. There were colourful displays of rhododendrons and azaleas in a variety of different hues. In front of the boat was a panorama of distant hills. We had a few spots of rain when we alighted in Bowness but it didn’t last long. We

were surrounded by more swans than we’d ever seen in one place. Most of them were strutting about on the pathways and grassy banks and I was surprised with how tall they are out of the water. Their feet looked like grey plastic toy feet. Jackdaws and black headed gulls also joined in the throng. We had a couple of hours of free time to do our own thing. Some headed for the shops and cafes but we went for a walk around the edge of the lake, admiring the views as we went along. The wind was quite gusty in parts. Then some of us went to see the Holehird Gardens and others remained in Bowness to explore at their leisure. The big house there had apparently been rented out for two summers by Beatrix Potter and her family in their day. The gardens were superb, with every imaginable variety of trees, shrubs and plants, all carefully labelled. A dedicated team of volunteers do an excellent job running the place. Lovely pathways meandered around

the hillside landscaping and the sound of birdsong filled the air as we strolled along. Our nostrils were filled with a strong earthy scent of plants and foliage and now and again we caught glimpses of distant lakes through the veil of trees and shrubs – very idyllic! We then went back to join the others in Bowness. On the journey home, we stopped at the Anchor Inn at Gargrave, where they had meal deals of two for £9.00 – just right for us pensioners and the food was really good. After being fed and watered, we boarded the coach to enjoy the scenic ride home. There was torrential rain in Leeds but we didn’t care after having enjoyed such a good day and we scattered to our various buses to go home.

hen Active Kids Day Nursery in Yeadon was opened in 2004, it was because of my concerns regarding childhood obesity and associated diseases like heart disease and diabetes. I never realised then how rewarding working with children was going to be, or how important a role childcare plays in the wider community. A lot of money has been spent by the government on training courses for childcare providers across the board. New guidance shows how children start their learning as babies and we shouldn’t miss any opportunity to teach them new things from the start. Children are all individuals and will learn at different rates but providing they receive a healthy diet, physical activities, lots of fresh air and a stimulating environment, they will have all they need to develop to their full potential. Some nurseries are more equipped to embrace this new thinking than others. Active Kids however is one nursery which is fully committed to providing our children with as many opportunities as we possibly can. Our open plan nursery means that the children are able to watch and learn from each other. They sit together at mealtimes, which make this more of a social occasion than just a time to eat, and our food is always home cooked meals with fruit snacks in between and water to drink at mealtimes and throughout the day. Milk is served at snack times. The open environment also ensures that children feel relaxed with staff from all areas of the nursery and not just their own key worker. This makes the move between different rooms much easier. Parents are able to enter the nursery and see their children at play at any time during the day. We also allow potential parents to view the nursery without making an appointment. This is

because we want parents to feel at ease with us and to know we have nothing to hide, and in order to keep things simple we include everything except formula milk within our fees. We have a lovely secure outdoor play area which is surrounded by trees and also indoor play area which we can use when the weather is too bad outside. We use both areas for activities which help children develop their bodies and their minds with such things as obstacle courses, climbing, swinging and crawling. We also just have fun with dance sessions and parachute games etc. The children learn to share and take turns from a young age, and also that we have rules which they must follow such as no running in nursery, lining up to go outside etc; this makes the atmosphere more calm and orderly and enjoyable for everyone. It also makes planning activities much easier when the children can behave properly. We have a few free places starting September, available in our pre school room for children between 3 and 4 years old who can access the Nursery Education Grant. Further information regarding Active Kids can be found on our website www.active-kids.co.uk or you can call 01132 397288. We look forward to welcoming you to Active Kids! My main mission is to increase confidence in all children, to give them the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of song and dance and have lots of fun.” Testament to babyballet’s success are Nancy Lucas and Rachael Gascoigne-Higgins of babyballet Bradford North, who hold classes in Greengates, Thackley, Wilsden, Saltaire, Clayton, Shipley, Bingley, Haworth and Utley. Then there’s Kelly Nathaniel and Yvonne Wilson of babyballet Leeds Central, whose classes are held in Horsforth, Rodley, Churwell, Morley and Beeston and Karen Goodwin of babyballet Leeds North, runs her classes in Rawdon, Headingley, Allwoodley, West Park, Cookridge and Wetherby. As they themselves are parents of young children , they appreciate the importance of encouraging kids to be active through babyballet classes, to promote health and fitness and to be given the opportunity to socialise with other children of a similar age, which is a very important aspect of developing your child’s social skills. The classes are also a great opportunity for parents to socialise, with many mums making great friends. From the end of July to the end of August, babyballet offers specially adapted ‘summer sessions’. These are different from the formal babyballet structure and have been designed to have greater emphasis on more fun. They are held in a more relaxed environment and last for one hour, during which the children play, dance and carry out craft-based activities. Summer sessions can also be attended on an individual basis rather than signing up for a course and they are being run by all of the babyballet teachers mentioned above. Children can attend from as young as 6 months with activities adapted to each age group. To find out where and when your nearest babyballet summer class is being held, call Nancy and Rachael on Tel: 0845 6024620 or email: bradfordnorth@babyballet.co.uk, Kelly and Yvonne can be contacted on Tel: 0113 2587841 or email: leedscentral@babyballet. co.uk, Karen is available on Tel: 0113 2249643 or email: leedsnorth@babyballet.co.uk.

e Candy for Walls! M

ost people reach a stage or age where they re-evaluate their lives; Lindsey Hill-Mawson’s was when she turned 30! The graphic designer was working for an advertising agency at the time and took the major decision to launch Apperley Design, that was eight years ago and because of Lindsey’s passion and dedication to her craft, she has never looked back. Designing websites for customers also gave Lindsey the idea to launch what she believes is a unique enterprise, selling ‘eye candy for walls and windows’ online. “I was looking for some art for my own house and I couldn’t find anything I really liked,” she recalls. Lindsey had done some of her own illustrations on the computer. The first few designs she did gave her the idea for ‘eye candy for walls’, the strapline she uses to promote her enterprise. Artylicious is an online art boutique allowing customers to choose various designs from the website, following such themes as abstract art, landscapes, even graffiti which can be printed on canvas, roller blinds and even deckchairs which make the most amazing and unique gifts. By supplying a photograph, customers can also personalise their purchase. Photographs on canvas enable customers to bring life to their walls and blinds. Baby images are particularly popular for nursery blinds and such is the popularity of Lindsey’s work that

it frequently makes an appearance in TV makeover shows such as 60 Minute Makeover and Changing Rooms. Lindsey says: “The canvases are a wonderful way to liven up a room, whether they entail a funky design or something more personalised with keepsake value. They are designed and hand-made to perfection and add that little bit of quirkiness to home decor.” Keeping it in the family, Lindsey runs Artylicious with her husband, Adam, also a graphic designer. Landscapes and abstracts adorn their walls but the most precious images are those of their baby son Harvey. “The photograph on canvas product is one I am especially fond of; mainly because I have a picture of my little boy Harvey spread across three canvases in his nursery, adding a real personal touch to the room. I would encourage all mums to opt for this keepsake canvas as a stylish way to adorn nursery walls.” “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Art can be anything. Art is anything that is pleasing to the eye,” says Lindsey, and when you see her work you will not only want it for your own home, you will want to tell everyone you know about this great local business and direct them to the site. Hatchmore Space for Easier Living B

asement, loft and garage conversions have never been more popular, with the stagnant housing market, expanding families and constant changing personal circumstances, people are starting to look at what other opportunities they have for more space, and thanks to modern techniques, these areas are dry, warm, energy efficient and airy; the perfect habitat to expand into. Hatchmore Space provides a complete design, project management and build service conversions. MD Phil Hatchett told us, “Scandinavian damp proofing technology came to the UK over 20 years ago and has consigned musty basement conversions to the archives of home improvement horrors.” Having been involved in the damp proofing industry for over 20 years, Phil knows what he’s talking about and has done hundreds of basement and garage conversions all over Yorkshire and the North West. Phil explained, “The system that we use in basement conversions can hold its own anywhere, it is even used to stop water penetrating the tunnels of London’s tube system. It is increasingly important to use a robust system of this kind given

the extreme weather conditions we are experiencing. I have done everything from a 4 metre square store to a ten room basement conversion comprising a snooker room, two bedrooms, lounge, gym and shower room; effectively a whole new floor to the house!” Phil set up his company to provide a service that people can trust, rely on and that exceeded their expectations every time. He succeeds in doing this with a carefully selected team of joiners, electricians, plasterers and plumbers, all with a focus on providing a dedicated, personal service. “The worst thing about the building trade is its reputation,” Phil told us, “people get so frustrated with tradesmen who don’t turn up when they say they will and then no one takes control if there is a problem. I deal with issues before they can even become a problem. I make sure my customers always know exactly what is going on and I pay close attention to every detail. As a result my customers are always delighted with the finished product and the way we have delivered the project.” Contact Phil on 07970 805886 or 01274 569163 to discuss your requirements or visit www.hatchmorespace.co.uk for more information.

o that’s it then. No more Saturdays and Tuesdays spent with friends on the terracing till next August. Well not unless you attend the pre season friendlies, and the ones earmarked for us are trips to the fine city of York on the 18th July along with the usual defeat at Farsley Celtic. So what do football fans do in the close season then? Holidays planned around the football season are of course a priority for us but apparently not as important in our house as that much needed decorating job in the lounge. Still a few days work scrapping and painting isn’t too much to ask is it for the 9 months or so we spend following our team. Close season for any Bradford City fan is becoming very comical at the moment as we are kept entertained by close neighbours L666s Utd who seem to always reach the play offs but never proceed any further. Hard luck lads and lasses he says with a snigger! Still shouldn’t criticise to much as our season went off the rails in February after straight wins against Grimsby, Gillingham and Wycombe. Then followed a 14 match run where we only managed two wins. So when all was lost and the play offs were all but impossible we went and won the last two. Still not to worry as a mass clear out begins at Valley Parade with players jumping on the transfer merry go round, hope some good ones jump off as it’s passing Bradford! However good or bad fans thought the season was it was great to see another youngster win the Player of the Year award with young left back Luke O’Brien collecting the trophy. The Shipley Bantams award was won by another youngster Dean Furman the South African on loan midfielder from Rangers. His award was The Stuart Hardy Memorial Trophy and was presented by Sharon Tavendale the niece of Stuart. The past season has been a good one for the Shipley Bantams apart from the sad death of one of our founder members

Stuart Hardy who was responsible for writing this column in the past. We managed to sponsor two players, Michael Boulding and Paul McLaren, also sponsoring a game at Valley Parade early in the season. The penultimate home game of the season against Lincoln brought together the two teams who were playing at Valley Parade on the fateful day of the fire in May 85. Both managers Peter Jackson and Stuart McCall were playing that day. A bucket collection was made prior to the game and raised £1307, which will go to the Bradford Burns Unit. Our own tribute took place at 11am on the 11th May 09 in Centenary Square when a Shipley Bantams member Gillian Minshull laid a wreath in honour of the 56 fans who perished that day. It is also remembered that the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster took place on the 15th April this year and whilst it differed in a lot of respects to the tragedy in Bradford it is a stark reminder that football is only a game and there are more important things in life, like life itself. So win, lose or draw we are the luck ones who live to see another game, of course that will all depend on whether the garden as been dug, or the walls have been papered. Roll on August the 8th and the first league game. Hope it’s at Torquay, just to think we got rid of that Exeter City and now face an even longer trek down the M6, M5 A30 corridor. Knowing our luck it’ll be on a Tuesday night in January and instead of the nagging about wallpaper, gardening and any other thing Mrs finds us to do in close season she’ll be nagging about taking 2 days off work and getting home at some silly time in the morning. Take care everyone and watch you don’t spill too much paint on the carpet, which of course according to her who knows nothing about football should have been taken up. Still she’ll be able to shop for another one now won’t she? Mmmm shopping, that’s another thing us footy fans hate.

Clubmark Gold Accreditation for Bradford clubs

B

radford Metropolitan District Council, West Yorkshire Sport and the RFL celebrated the RFL Clubmark Gold successes during Bradford Bulls Super league game against Leeds Rhino’s at the Grattan Stadium Odsal on Friday night. Clubmark Gold is part of the club accreditation scheme re launched by the RFL on April 1st 2009. The clubs were presented with their Certificate by the Sports Minister and Bradford MP Gerry Sutcliffe This is a significant achievement for three of Bradford Districts top Sports clubs BRADFORD BULLS, BRADFORD DUDLEY HILL and WIBSEY JUNIORS who become the one of the first Rugby League Clubs to achieve Clubmark Gold Status. 129 rugby league clubs across the country now have Clubmark status and 100 clubs are also registered on the scheme. Sport England Clubmark sets generic criteria for national governing bodies of sport to accredit their clubs against in order to create safe, effective, and child friendly environments. Clubs who achieve Clubmark Status are officially ‘rubber stamped’ as being a quality club, having all the right procedures, policies, action plans and coaches with relevant qualifications in place, ensuring the club has a ‘safe, effective and child friendly environment’, and are known as “A Quality Assured Rugby League Club”. Clubmark Gold is an enhanced level of achievement and continues to bring benefits such as promoting clubs within their communities, increased participation levels, developing coaches and volunteers at clubs, raising standards and receiving priority status with funding applications. A great initiative and well done to the Bullls, Dudley Hill and Wibsey juniors in achieving Clubmark Gold Status.

o sooner had the final whistle sounded the end of Leeds United’s unsuccessful League One campaign, than Elland Road chairman Ken Bates ushered in the 2009/2010 season. Leeds United suffered Play-Off semifinal heartbreak at the hands of Millwall, losing 2-1 on aggregate to the London club, but Bates and manager Simon Grayson were quick to turn their attentions to the forthcoming campaign. “Simon (Grayson) came in to see me afterwards and we went through every player on the books and what we want to do,” the Leeds chairman said. “I had a staff meeting first thing on Friday morning and I told them: ‘Last night has gone. We’re now planning for promotion next season, and that planning starts now. This is the first day of our title-winning season.’ “We had a traumatic season because for the second one in succession we had a change of manager which is always unsettling. But next season we start properly. We have a good manager, a good playing staff which will be strengthened and great fans. “We’re very lucky here. We have a passionate fan base, we have big plans for the club, and we’ve had a set-back. We are a year behind schedule, but we’ll put that right next season.” The manager was also looking ahead in positive and insists that his players should use their near-miss as inspiration next term. “In the end, we came up short against Millwall over two games but it wasn’t through lack of effort,” said Grayson. “It was a very quiet dressing room afterwards, but we have to use it as motivation. Some of them have been through it, but they’ll all stick together. “We don’t deserve to be in this league, but we are. Look at our fans. They were outstanding, and the reception at the end of the Millwall game meant so much. “We’ve fallen short, but we’ll be back. We’d love to be in the Championship, but we’re not and we’ll properly and we set our sights higher for next season.”

The manager has already drawn up his plans for the 2009/2010 season and his message to the players immediately after the final whistle was that automatic promotion will be the aim next term. “We have to start positively and make sure we get promoted,” he said. “It was difficult to take immediately afterwards, but we’ll use it as an inspiration to straight up. We’ll use the Millwall experience to be better and stronger and come back and win automatic promotion, never mind the Play-Offs. “I’m extremely proud of the players and the staff, and what they’ve done over the past few months. When we came in December anything could have happened. We could have dwindled away, but we galvanised them and we’ve lost two in 17. “If you have a run like that at this stage and you don’t get promoted you are probably very unlucky, but credit to them.” Both manager and chairman were also quick to praise the support of the Leeds. Over 37,000 turned out for the PlayOff semi-final – the highest Football League crowd of the season – and Leeds were afforded a standing ovation in defeat against Millwall. “The support was unbelievable yet again and I can’t thank them enough,” Grayson said. “The reception at the end meant a lot. Since the day I walked through the door in December the fans have been with us every step of the way. “I think the fans appreciate what we’ve done as a group, and that’s how we will do it next year by all sticking together as a group. The fans knew we’d had a go at it. The fans have been outstanding both at Elland Road and away, and I’m more disappointed that we couldn’t reward them, but we’ll all come back stronger.” The United chairman was also quick to praise what he described as “the best fans I’ve ever seen.” “I have nothing but praise for the

fans,” he added. “The players were given a standing ovation and to hear them chanting ‘There’s only one Simon Grayson’ was very encouraging as well. “I have to say these fans are the best I’ve ever seen in football. They’ve had nothing to celebrate, but they’ve been fantastic.”

ore than 50 local children have enjoyed a fun and active half term holiday on the Rhinos activity camp, which took place at Garforth Community College and was run by the Leeds Rhinos community team. Each of the four days were packed full with activities such as basketball, tag rugby, football, wrestling, dance with the Radio Aire Dance Team, rounders, cricket, treasure hunts, Rhino Slide and Rhino Ball, so there was something for each child to enjoy. Leeds Rhinos stars Ryan Hall, Danny McGuire and Paul McShane called into the camp to meet the children and pass on some of their expert tips. The visit was one of the highlights of the camp for many of the children who were able to get autographs and have their pictures taken with their heroes. On the final day of the camp the children took centre stage to compete for some Rhinos goodies in their very own talent competition ’Rhinos Got Talent’ with Rhinos Development officers Jonny Wainhouse, Gareth Cooke and Laura Clark taking on the roles of the judges. The Leeds Rhinos programme of camps for 2009 offers children the opportunity to take part in a variety of different healthy activities during the school holidays. All profits generated support the work of the Leeds Rugby Foundation. The camps have been designed exclusively for boys and girls from 7 to 17 and are suitable for a wide range of abilities. ighty girls from the LR Dance Academy got the chance of a lifetime to perform on the Headingley Carnegie pitch in front of thousands of fans before the Rhinos took on Hull on recently. The LR Dance Academy is run by the Leeds Rugby Foundation and led by Radio Aire Dance captains Nicola Booth and Amy Burrows. Over the last eight weeks, pupils aged between 6 and 15, have been attending classes every Monday, preparing for their very special performance. The dance was a big success with the crowd. Speaking afterwards, Rhinos Dance Captain Nicola Booth said she was really pleased with the young stars: “Over the last eight weeks, we have seen the girls who have attended the LR Dance Academy not only improve their dance skills but also build up their confidence to be able to perform the way they did on such a big stage.

It was amazing and we are really proud of all of them. Despite some of the youngest dancers being just six years old, they were not daunted by the massive crowd and each one of them performed fantastically and I think many of them will be pushing their way for a place in the Radio Aire Dance team in a few years time.” The LR Dance Academy is open to girls aged between 6 to 15 years and provides opportunities for children to have fun and meet new friends. It also provides routes for progression onto the Rhinos Dance Team. Dance Academy members also get access to a range of other befits including competitions and regular theatre trips with the Radio Aire Dance team. Classes are held on Monday night in the Carnegie Café Bar at Headingley Carnegie Stadium. The junior class (6-11 years) takes place between 6-7pm and the senior class (12-15 years) takes place between 7-8pm. Places are still available at £15 for six weeks. G

iant prop Kylie Leuluai, 31, has agreed a new two year contract with Super League champions Leeds Rhinos. The Samoan international joined the Rhinos at the start of the 2007 season and has been an integral part of the squad that has claimed back to back Championships in the past two seasons. Commenting on his new deal, the former Manly Sea Eagles front rower said: “I am really happy to have signed the new deal because I believe that this is the best club in the competition to be playing with. There was never any thought in my mind about moving to another club. Why would you want to play for anyone other than Leeds? This is a successful club to be part of and I am looking forward to the next two years very much. “My son Marley has just started school and my wife and I love living in Leeds so everything is right, both on and off the field,” added Leuluai. Head Coach Brian McClennan expressed his delight at the news of Leuluai’s new contract: “It is great news. Kylie is a good man who has already been involved in some successes with the club and we hope there is more to come. He is very important on and off the field for us. On the field he offers us steel and toughness on defence and over the past few years he has developed his attacking game as well. Off the field, he is so good around the boys and his wife and son are really part of the family here at the Rhinos.”
