Proud to Sponsor Phil in his World Championship Bid! Local man, Phil Goode, age 41, of Bradford, and husband of Christine Goode, Principle of The May School of Dance and Theatre Arts in Crosshills, recently qualified for the GB Team World Championships in Beijing, China, which will take place on 10th September 2011. Phil only started triathlons two and a half years ago, his first race was Skipton 2009 coming 120th out of 500 entrants, and in April 2011 he came 1st in his age category and 3rd overall out of 700 entrants! He regularly competes in triathlons up and down the country and this year qualified for Beijing. What an achievement in such a short period of time. The World Championships will be held in the Changping District of the city next to the historic Ming Tombs and the Great Wall. The Changping District, north of Beijing is home to an incredible landscape and one of the major passes of the Great Wall of China. The proposed course is a spectacle of new and old China. Athletes will swim in the Changping Reservoir next to one of many ancient pagodas in the region. The bike course will take athletes through the surrounding hills and past the Ming Tombs; finally they will run through the local urban setting.

Phil has managed to secure sponsorship from many companies and even some of his loyal customers from his gardening business, to whom he is very grateful. His wife Christine, children Mollie and Finlay, family and friends are very proud of him and wish him all the best and look forward to seeing a prize winning medal on his return! Our Top 10 Autumn Foods

he days of bright berries, crisp salads and succulent summer fruit are almost behind us for another year. While you might be disappointed to see the last of the seasonal salads, don’t fret there are delicious replacements on the way to help you keep your healthy eating habits.

T

Autumn is a season of deep green, dark yellow and brilliant orange and these colours mean the fruits and vegetables are rich in disease-fighting phytochemicals. The more colourful the fruit, the better it is for your health. Here are our top 10 picks for the most delicious and healthy autumn fruits and veggies. Make them a regular part of your diet, so you can continue to reap the nutritional rewards that fruits and vegetables offer throughout the year. Parsnips. These might look like white carrots but they have a delicate, sweet flavour. While they don’t contain the same high amounts of vitamin A as carrots, parsnips are a good source of fibre, vitamin C, calcium and iron. Look for smooth and firm, small to medium sized parsnips for the best quality. Large coarse roots usually have woody or fibrous centres. Traditionally, parsnips are boiled and mashed together with carrots, but they can be steamed, microwaved, boiled, roasted or sautéed as a side vegetable. They also stand in nicely for carrots, potatoes or sweet potatoes in most recipes, and lend a gentle sweetness to soups and other combinations of root vegetables. Turnips and swedes. A member of the mustard family, turnips - known as swedes in Scotland and Ireland - have a white

8

flesh with a tough outer skin that ranges from yellow to purple, and a more bitter flavour than potatoes. They are a good source of vitamin C and offer 2-3g dietary fibre per serving. Like their cousins, broccoli, cabbage and Brussels sprouts, these cruciferous vegetables contain the potent phytochemical sulforaphane, which has been shown to protect against cancer, especially breast cancer. Try incorporating them into recipes where you’d normally use plain old spuds. They work well boiled, mashed or roasted. Sweet potatoes. Despite its name, the sweet potato is not related to the potato. Good-quality sweet potatoes will be firm, smooth-skinned and tan to light rose colour. They are high in vitamin C (one serving provides 50% of the RDA) and provide three grams of fibre per serving. Sweet potatoes are an ideal choice for people with diabetes, since they are considered a low glycaemic food. This means that the carbohydrate in sweet potatoes is released slowly, which helps maintain steady blood sugar levels. Pumpkins. These are more than just Halloween decorations. The pumpkin’s bright orange colour is a dead giveaway that it’s loaded with an important antioxidant, beta-carotene, as well as being rich in vitamin C and folate. Carotenoids, such as beta-carotene, may reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer and protect against heart disease. Even the seeds are packed with nutritional value. In fact, they are only second to peanuts in protein content and a good source of zinc and omega-3 fatty acids, which can help reduce your risk of heart disease. You can roast your own seeds from a fresh pumpkin in a hot oven (190°C) for about 45 minutes. If you do not fancy cooking

a pumpkin, don’t forget that you can use canned pumpkin in any recipe. It’s great served as a tasty side dish for a main meal and ideal for making hearty winter soups, as well as being baked into bread and pumpkin pie. Winter squash. While summer squash tends to be tender and moist with edible seeds and rind, winter squash develops hard rinds and the tough seeds and fibrous centre are inedible and must be scooped out. Winter squash is one of the few vegetables that do not lose quality after picking. In fact, during storage, the beta-carotene (vitamin A) content increases, and they contain more than 100% of the RDA for vitamin A. They are also a good source of heart-healthy nutrients, folate and fibre. Clementines. These are the baby cousins of the Florida or navel orange and are also known as mandarin oranges. They can be quite difficult to distinguish from tangerines, but the main difference is that clementines are often seedless. They have loose skin, so they are easy to peel and make a great portable snack. They marry well with chicken dishes, so try adding some wedges to a grilled chicken wrap for a tropical flavour. If your salad is looking a little dreary, dress it up with a few clementines for more colour or blend segments with low-fat vanilla yoghurt and skimmed milk for a creamy fruit smoothie. Apples. Apples contain flavonoids, some of the most potent antioxidants around. Several studies have shown that people who eat a diet that’s rich in flavonoids have a lower risk of heart disease and heart attacks as well as several types of cancer. And to top that, they are good for more than baking. There are thousands of fabulous recipes for apples, from crumbles to simply baked, perfect served with homemade custard. Pears. Pears are a high-fibre food, with a medium pear providing four grams of fibre, which is equivalent to one and a half cups of brown rice. Most of the fibre is also of the soluble kind, which can help lower blood cholesterol levels and improve blood sugar control. They are almost as versatile as the apple. You can use them in low-fat pancakes, sliced on sandwiches or poached and drizzled with maple syrup for a warm, sweet dessert. Cranberries. If you are looking for berries that ripen in the autumn, look no further than cranberries. Not only are they a healthy, low-calorie fruit, they also play a significant role in preventing urinary tract infections and reducing the risk of gum disease, ulcers, heart disease and cancer. Cranberries contain anthocyanins, the heart-healthy antioxidants, which are also found in tea and red wine, and the compound that gives them their colour. Fresh cranberries can be too tart on their own, but they pair wonderfully with other fruits such as apples and pears. Cranberries work well added to muffins and other baked goods and in compotes, relishes, chutneys and fruit desserts. Figs. These often-overlooked fruits are full of flavour and their chewy texture makes them a tasty, nutritious addition to your diet. Figs are high in fibre, in fact more dietary fibre per serving than any other common dried or fresh fruit. They are also a good non-dairy source of calcium - the same amount of figs and milk provide equal amounts of calcium. Keep dried figs on hand as a rich-tasting alternative to cookies or dessert. Or sweeten up mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes with some chopped figs. The figs add a richness of their own, so you can skip the butter or margarine.

Professional Tutoring Makes for a Happy New (School)Year progress. Assessments are confidential and often highlight areas of difficulty that parents were previously unaware of.

A New Approach In recent years, the traditional idea of a private tutor sitting at the kitchen table and battling with limited resources against the many distractions of the home (television, hi-fi, siblings, etc.) has been overtaken by the idea of purpose equipped education centres, often staffed with qualified teachers. The best of them teach in small groups with individual learning plans based upon a child’s own specific needs. Children like learning with other children around as long as the work set is engaging, fun and appropriate to their unique level of development. Children also need a caring environment that helps to build confidence and put them on a steady course to success.

Investing in the Future ith the onset of a new school year many parents, children and schools will already be feeling pressure to get good results. At a time when a lot of children are looking forward to the challenges presented in a new year group or even at a new school, there are many children out there who face the year with mounting trepidation. They may feel they have already fallen by the wayside because their confidence has taken a battering somewhere in the past. Perhaps in previous years they have missed out on a few vital steps in Maths or English, at a crucial time in their learning, and never really caught up. Other children however, may need more challenges than school can reasonably provide in a busy classroom environment.

W

A rapidly increasing number of parents, grandparents and carers see this centre-based private tuition as an investment, not only in a child’s future, but their own too. A boy or girl who is independent, confident and successful is likely to present less of a financial and emotional burden in future years.

Education Centres in your Area There are an increasing number of education centres delivering a high quality of private tuition after school and at weekends in the West Yorkshire area. Most provide free assessments and cater for a wide variety of ages and abilities. However, not all employ fully qualified staff so, to be sure of a happy ‘New School Year,’ ask before you make this life changing commitment.

Broken Resolutions How many parents have noticed a change in their child’s attitude to learning over time and resolved to dig deeper but not got around to it? Then, before they know it, they find they are being told that their child is seriously underachieving at school. It is all too easy in today’s busy world to put off the decision to recruit help but, for some, action comes too late. Parents shocked by GCSE mock exams, for example, understandably feel guilty for not having acted earlier and reach for the phone in a state of panic. However, with a little forward planning, they could have saved themselves and their children much worry.

The Secret to a Happy ‘New School Year’ No matter what your child’s learning goals are, the secret to success is to plan ahead and take nothing for granted. Free assessments are widely available through reputable private tuition services so parents have nothing to lose in obtaining an independent review of their child’s academic

a unique dance concept for children and adults! Riding on the success of their babyballet classes in the region, Nancy Lucas, a professional dancer for ten years, and Rachael Gascoigne-Higgins, introduced Total Dance a year ago and its success has seen the number of classes in the local area grow to 30 each week with over 400 children and adults attending! Nancy and Rachael explain: “Total Dance is suitable for boys and girls aged five and upwards, we offer a range of fun and energetic classes for those who want to enjoy the benefits of dance without the strict setting. More formal classes are available for those who are serious about furthering their dance ability and adjudications and examinations are optional. Classes are taught by professional dancers who have been trained to the highest standard in each discipline. We have introduced these specialised classes so that no matter what type of dance your child wants to do, with us they will learn great new skills, gain confidence, make new friends and also get fitter!”

A new and exciting class for children – Zumbatomic! It’s a fast-forward fusion of the Zumba programme’s moves (salsa, cumbia, reggaeton, hip-hop and more) and high-octane workouts designed to let kids aged four -12 max out on fun and fitness all at the same time. E

We asked owner, Janet Brierley, what we could expect to see in her fabulous new footwear boutique and also what the autumn/winter fashions would be, here’s what Janet told us: “It’s so exciting to have such a prime position on the Main Street in Bingley, and with all of this extra space we can really showcase our range of bags, scarves and accessories, all of which will really complement the shoes and boots we are taking delivery of as we speak. Regency colours such as bottle green, rich purple and royal blue will be huge this season,

along with suede and patent. These colours are going to be seen in beautiful Brogue styles that will team perfectly with the fashions that are about to hit your favourite boutiques, such as knits, capes and tweeds. There are Brogue shoes and also boots and we anticipate this style will be really popular with all ages. Snow boots will also be the big trend for winter and the Tamaris range is gorgeous! Other new lines we are now stocking are, Adesso for our younger customers, and Capollini for more traditional styles. For that touch of glamour and the festive season, Nude platform court shoes and Suede platform court shoes will be really popular.” For all the latest news and offers, you can always visit Shoobox of Bingley at their Facebook page, better still call into the new shop, you will not be disappointed!

JJB Reviews -

Jack Bottomley on Film

Out Now: Super 8 (12) Nostalgia, playful referencing and fun all accompany this brilliant Science Fiction film about a group of kids attempting to make a film, when a real train crash releases something upon their town. This Summer film takes you back to pioneering age of its genre and has a most welcome air of classic Spielberg about it ( it should he produces the film). Directed by Star Trek (2009) director J.J. Abrams, this film is filmed with such enticing affection and is clearly a passion project for all involved. The young cast are a joy and give the film the same magical, childhood, adventurous appeal as much loved films like The Goonies. True the film loses a bit of its edge when the creature is left more revealed to the camera but this is still a retro trip back to youth for adults and an action-packed ride for younger audiences.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (12) To correct a mistake in my last article, the original Planet of the Apes was in 1968 and this reboot/prequel, though referring to a few of the same characters and basic idea of Pierre Boulle’s original novel, is the set up for a hopeful new franchise. On this evidence we could be in for some cracking Apes films, the film looks at a genetically modified ape, Caesar (Andy Serkis) who is cared for by James Franco’s scientist but when things go wrong and Caesar is detained and mistreated, he and the other inmates start a hostile takeover. The film is rich in themes from animal testing to cultural divides and the effects and set pieces are amazing, meaning this is a blockbuster with brain and heart. Serkis steals the show in a superb motion capture performance and the emotional investment to the ape characters is stunningly created. The cast are great in their roles, even if a few human characters are a tad slight but when the epic set piece finale arrives on Golden Gate Bridge, you’ll realise this is the best Planet of the Apes since the original.

Cowboys and Aliens (12) Adapted from the graphic novel by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, this genre mash-up is, in truth, the most honest film you’ll see this Summer. It fulfils its promises as an all-out popcorn funfest with a great cast and bombastic action. Daniel Craig is cast perfectly

as the amnesiac outlaw, who must put aside differences with imposing cattleman Woodraw Dollarhyde (Harrison Ford) to save their people from an alien invasion. Whilst Ford exels in a few action scenes and one of his more emotional scenes in some time . The special effects and settings are beautiful and feel drawn from the source material. This is well filmed and acted and just sheer fun. It takes time for the genres to gel and it does often take itself too seriously and underwrite the odd character but sit back, relax and enjoy this crazy idea and fulfilling film.

Family Film battle: Mr Popper’s Penguins (PG) vs. The Smurfs 3D (PG) Mr Popper’s penguins stars Jim Carrey as the dad distant from his family, who inherits a group of penguins, that bring them closer. Whereas The Smurfs is an adaptation of the classic comic by Pierre Culliford and 80’s TV Series, where The Smurfs must find a way home after being transported to New York, whilst avoiding the evil Gargamel. Popper’s Penguins has fun with its idea, taken from the classic children’s book by Richard and Florence Atwater, it has heart and Carrey at his most charming style. As well as a more emotional punch than you’d expect, with a great set of characters both animal and human. Whereas The Smurfs loses out with a dodgy story and Hank Azaria’s performance as Gargamel aside, there’s little to distinguish it from countless other kids films. Go with Popper!

Coming Soon/out now: Apollo 18 (15) nd

2 September Hand-held styled Horror about the secret last mission to the moon, showing the real reason why we never went back, in this interesting looking chiller.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (12) th

16 September Based on the 1974 John le Carre novel set in the 70’s about an officer who comes out of retirement to find a Russian agent. This Drama/Thriller boasts a great British cast including Gary Oldman, Colin Firth and Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch and Mark Strong.

The Perfect Dress for

The Fuller Figure!

Being full figured doesn’t mean you can’t find dresses for plus size women, but sometimes shopping can be unenjoyable, especially when you need a chic dress for a special event. You love your shape, curves, and everything about your beautiful body, but not all designers know how to make that something special you are hoping to find. There are some dresses for plus size women that hug you where you wish they would flow and other dresses that just don’t cover enough of what you have. Here’s some handy advice to help you find the perfect dress you have been searching for…

B

Pleated Floral: Chic Retro Dress In the 50s and 60s women loved showing off their curves and models and pinup girls had hips and bodies you could shake. The floral print, pleating, and shape of the neckline flatter a woman’s body and help to show off the things she likes best about it. This would be a great dress to wear to a wedding, and any parties you might be attending. Flowing Print Perfect Dress Fabric that flows and bands that help accentuate our top half rather than our midsection or hips are important things you should know when shopping for dresses for plus size women, this gives a slimming illusion as the print fabric flows away from

16

FASHION

the body as well as covers the arms and the band around the bodice gives any woman a complementing look. Faux-wrap: Simple and Chic Dress Sometimes we just want a nice, simple dress we can wear to work and accessorize for night time. A faux-wrap dress for larger ladies looks great from all angles and is perfect for daytime or evening. A pretty dress with a great neckline and a removable belt that can be used to help flatter your waistline also help to accentuate your height and give a more streamline look. Sexy Black Lace A tiered, banded look is one of my favourite trends, and you are sure to receive many compliments on. This is a dress style for plus size women who love showing off their gorgeous curves and feel sexy when they do. The high waist and beautiful lace-overlaid bodice give you a slimming look and a dress that hugs you in all the right places. This is the perfect little black dress! One Shoulder Dress Being full figured you don’t always find that dress that gives you the glow you were hoping for. A stunning one shoulder dress will make you feel like the beautiful goddess that you are. Draped chiffon that flows away from the body can make you feel confident with no need for accessories or strong makeup, just let the dress and your sexy body do all of the talking! Silky Charmeuse Bold flower print catches the eye and draping is great for many plus size women who are looking for the perfect elegant dress for that special occasion. There are many beautiful dresses for plus size women that flatter full figured bodies, just because we have a little more doesn’t mean we should hide it with ugly clothes. We should also learn how to dress in a way that will complement our curves instead of wearing something that is too tight or too short. Though it may be a struggle to find them, chic dresses for plus size women are out there and hopefully with our help you have found your favourite look here!

Message from Inspector Peter Tuff Eccleshill Neighbourhood Policing Team n average in more than one in four burglaries, the thief doesn’t have to force anything, they can just walk in through and open or unlocked door or even climb through an insecure window, it couldn’t be easier. However, with the arrival of summer it is a timely reminder for us all to be equally security conscious.

O

When the sun is shining it is so tempting to throw open the doors and windows to let in the fresh air. Nothing wrong with that, but just think you might be letting in more than just fresh air if a little care is not taken. It’s not easy to be vigilant all the time. It’s tempting just to bob upstairs or round next door for a minute leaving your home wide open to the opportunist thief. And I’m sure I’m not the only one to have gone to bed on the odd occasion, forgetting to lock the door or secure a window. But, if we can just think ‘Burglar’ we may prevent ourselves from becoming another statistic. The next time you leave a wallet mobile phone or keys next to an unlocked front door or an open window it can present an incredibly easy target for burglars who can take them in just seconds. Let’s not hand it to them on a plate!

A simple security chain can prevent unwanted entry in to the home whilst leaving a door open for fresh air. Never leave keys in the locks of doors or windows or on view. Avoid leaving valuables near windows, for example mobile phones, handbags, jewellery, expensive ornaments and keys. Consider installing an audible warning system on external doors which will alert you to possible intruders. (Door alarms are for sale via our Watch shop) On Saturday 23rd July the police station at Eccleshill hosted the 2nd annual open day. The event was very well attended and again we were blessed with fantastic weather. I can’t thank enough our co-hosts Church on the Way for their help and assistance. Thank-you to all partner agencies who attended and helped to make the event so successful.

Having said all that, the number of household burglaries has fallen significantly in recent weeks so the message is getting across. People are taking time to ensure their homes have a good standard of security. Sub standard locks are being replaced and sash jammers and alarms fitted………have a great Summer! There are a number of measures we can take to guard against sneak thieves that include: Lock all doors and windows when working in the garden or garage.

CONDENSATION PROBLEM SOLVED! n a series of exclusive articles for Here & Now readers, Michael Foster CSRT MIWSc Dip Surv, a qualified property defects surveyor with over 25 years experience in diagnosing and eradicating property defects explores several of the most common property problems homeowners experience. What they are, how treat them and where possible, how to prevent them‌..

I

Michael is happy to offer all Here & Now readers a free telephone consultation if they have any questions about this or any other property care, repair or renovation problem. Please call him on 01943 877009

The second topic in our series is Condensation... In broad terms condensation is the formation of water in its liquid form from water vapour. Warmer air has the ability to carry moisture in the form of water vapour, when this air comes into contact with a cooler surface the water is released resulting in condensation. This occurrence can be exacerbated in areas where there is little or no airflow (such as the corner of rooms or where there are no open windows) or where there is increased moisture in the air – bathrooms and kitchens. Building designs, heating systems, poor ventilation and modern lifestyles combine to create high levels of humidity in our homes which contributes to condensation. Washing-up can release 1 litre of water vapour into the air in a Kitchen. A family of 4/5 people can create 1.5 litres of water vapour through 8 hours of sleep. This humidity is also an ideal habitat for dust mites, a major cause of asthma. Common signs of condensation include water on walls and windows. If left untreated, this can lead to unsightly and damaging mould growth across these and other surfaces including furniture. It can also produce an unpleasant musty odor. If you suspect you are experiencing condensation problems I would advise that you get a qualified surveyor to perform a survey. Consult the services of a specialist rather than a builderwho may misdiagnose the symptoms as damp leave you footing the bill for unneccessary work. Follow these simple tips to reduce condensation in your property. Dry clothes outside when possible and only use tumble dryers that are vented outside. Close bathroom/kitchen doors when bathing/cooking/drying clothes and open a window. Install and use extractor fans in high moisture production areas such as the bathroom and kitchen. Ventilate your property to ensure even consistent airflow (including wardrobes and cupboards which if overfilled do not let air circulate). Keep furniture away from exterior walls to allow air circulation Regulate your heating. Keep the property evenly and constantly heated If you require any further information on condensation or any other property defect matter, please contact Michael Foster at Pure Property Care on 0800 0320750 without obligation.

I

The scheme is being run in conjunction with Shipley College and the latest apprentice to join them is 18-year-old, Luke Ward. Leeds born Luke was keen to learn about the industry and is so far doing very well completing his apprenticeship in warehousing, learning about the assembly of wardrobes and also customer service. Luke left school in 2009 and has had a variety of jobs, none of which offered him a training scheme. And it’s this that’s the main aim of their scheme - they’re looking to help young people who want to get out and start earning and avoid the dole queue. The Wardrobe Store is part of Scandinavian House, leading UK furniture distributor. WIN STUFF

CITY IN THE PINK he new 2011/2012 season is almost upon us and what a relief for thousands of ardent football fans. Those endless Saturdays of finding something to do or avoiding doing something the wife is planning are over, roll on the football.

T

It seems quite obvious that the club is taking a different route from the one that seems to have existed over the last few seasons at Valley Parade. Emphasis on youth is evident and with Peter Jackson, the manager, not frightened to use these players we look forward to interesting times ahead. The new kit was revealed, and we’re back to proper claret and amber stripes for our home kit, but a controversial new away kit has had the fans purring with delight or gasping with astonishment. Its colour is called ‘Voltage Cherry’ but it’s really a shade of Pink. Something else which had us gasping with astonishment was the final total for the 25 year Burns Unit Memorial Fund. When the club set out to raise a total of £100,000, little did we realise that the Bradford public and businesses would

raise a staggering total of £167,775. What a magnificent effort from all concerned, to everyone who helped the cause a massive ‘Thank you’! The Shipley Bantams will be on the road as usual for all the gruelling 7,700 miles to away games this coming season. We welcome all new members to our club which runs from the Woodbottom WMC in Baildon. Anyone wishing to travel or join can contact us through our website www.theshippers.co.uk or by ringing 07974757730 We look forward to an exciting new season and whatever the outcome we’ll be cheering on the lads. EVEN IF IT IS PINK!

BULLS FOUNDATION AND HULL WYKE AMATEUR DEVELOP PARTNERSHIP lthough the result didn’t go the way of the bulls at the recent game against Hull in the Engage Super League a real positive was the link created between the Bradford Bulls Foundation and Hull Wyke Amateur Rugby League Club.

A

The amateur club from the Humber came with 300+ strong followers including over 120 youngsters who were coached the morning of the game at the Bradford Bulls training ground by the Bulls Foundation Community staff and four Academy players. The session consisted of the core skills required for rugby including passing, handling, grip, tackling and play the ball. After the youngsters were put through their paces Hull Wyke teamed up with two amateur clubs from Bradford to take part in the Bull Man and Bull Boy Parade where they were joined by the Hull mascot. To add to this great day out all teams took part in a half time extravaganza, with 14 teams taking part from cubs to under 12s.

32

Commenting on the day Foundation Manager Gareth Cook said: ‘The event was made possible by the hard work and determination from community coach Richard Tate and Hull Wyke junior co-ordinator Gary Spencer. We will be inviting Hull Wyke to the return fixture next season where we hope to make the event even bigger than this year. The link between an amateur club and the professional team is vital to all Super League Clubs as they are unearthing the players of the future. We wish Hull Wyke every success for the remainder of the season.” To find out more about how to register your team to play at half time contact Richard.tate@ bradfordbulls. co.uk
