Supporting local enterprise in our community
IDLE BECOMES ENTERPRISING! Work has started on creating the Wright Watson Enterprise Centre in Idle, a £1.4 million development in the heart of Idle village. The project will completely regenerate a landmark site that was home to Idle Wesleyan Chapel from 1810 and then Thorpe Methodist Church until its closure in 2008. The centre, due for completion towards the end of November 2014, will incorporate start-up office spaces for budding Bradford entrepreneurs, Idle library and exhibition area, and community space for meetings, training and activities. The extensively landscaped grounds will include a children’s play area. The centre will also contain a heritage room, funded by the Heritage Lottery fund, which will explore the contribution of First and Second World War Veterans from Idle, and create a commemorative garden to honour and remember the sacrifices made.The centre will also contain a heritage room, funded by the Heritage Lottery fund, which will explore the contribution of First and Second World War Veterans from Idle, and create a commemorative garden to honour and remember the sacrifices made. The Centre will be operated by Inspired Neighbourhoods Community Interest Company (INCIC). Chief Executive of INCIC, Nasim Qureshi said: “I am delighted the Wright Watson Enterprise Centre is coming to fruition after several years of detailed planning and preparation. Bradford has a high proportion of residents setting up new businesses and we look forward to supporting them and helping them to succeed” Councillor Jeanette Sunderland, Chair of INCIC added: “This is a hugely important development for Idle and this area of Bradford. As well as helping local entrepreneurs, the building will become a hub for local people who will be able to access many services and activities in one place” Fiona Spiers, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund – Yorkshire and the Humber said: “The First and Second World Wars affected all corners of the UK and impacted different communities across Yorkshire. The Heritage Room and Memorial Garden within the Enterprise Centre will enable the community to uncover, share and reflect on the contributions and sacrifices made by the local community.”

MY THAI MYWORD! We love Thai food, but it's rare we indulge as it always seems a bit of a hassle and an extra expense to get a cab into Leeds, so we invariably end up at a local restaurant eating the same as last weekend and the weekend before! Baring this in mind, I was delighted at the prospect of being introduced to what turned out to be an absolute gem of a place right on my doorstep.
There were four of us in our party and we all agreed on ordering one of the set taster menus - there are plenty of mouth watering offerings on the menu but we thought this would give us a few choices each - and so it did. First came the selection of starters, chicken satay, crispy prawns, angel wings, fish cake and my favourite the pork dumpling. All were sublime, beautiful flavours, perfectly cooked and served with tasty dipping sauces. Then came the Tom Yum Goong Soup, oh my Lord! This was absolutley delicious, really highly spiced and intense flavours with huge juicy prawns and fresh tomatoes, I could eat this soup all day long! Main courses were a mixture of seabass, duck, king prawns and beef dishes accompanied by noodles, jasmine and fried rice. All were really good and there was plenty, way too much infact for the four of us and we can all eat plenty! The service was really extremely good, my glass was never empty and nothing was too much trouble. These guys really know their stuff and being a real Thai food fan, I can definitely say that this restaurant compares favourbly to any of the big hitters in Leeds and beyond. It's my new favourite place and I will count myself as a regular from now on. We visited on a Friday evening, having made our reservation for 7.30pm. We arrived and were pleasantly greeted by Simon, the owner. It was actually a special evening for us as we were celebrating our wedding anniversary so pop went the Prosecco and we made ourselves comfortable in the plush pre dinner seating area. Having polished off the bubbles we were shown to our table. The restaurant was really quite busy but the ambience remained perfectly relaxed and the staff completely unphased.

Local appeal and local deals at United Carpets and Beds, Shipley When it comes to knowing what the folk of Shipley like about flooring, Ady Lee of United Carpets and Beds is the expert. But that’s no surprise – because Ady and his expert team have been providing advice and excellent customer service to customers in the town for 20 years. Susan has been retired for 5 years now, she says of her experience at Shipley College: "I love the history and heritage that Saltaire has, it’s an inspiring place to be". Susan is currently on the committee of the National Art fund: "I have a strong personal interest in art and always have done, so I searched online for courses locally and felt that Shipley College was the right choice. TAKING THE NEXT STEP IN YOUR CAREER Husarm, Accountancy AAT Level 2 Certificate
Husarm started out at Shipley College with an apprenticeship in Customer Services based at Bradford & Bingley (now UK Asset Resolution). He was offered a full-time job there and is looking to take the next step in his career. Husarm decided to specialise in finance by studying the Accountancy AAT Level 2 Certificate. “I enjoyed doing my apprenticeship at Shipley College so it was my first choice when looking for a part-time course. The tutors are really helpful, they make sure you build your knowledge of accountancy and ensure you are prepared for your exams.”

Richard, Access to Health & Social Care Professionals Richard spent 25 years working as a printer and has recently become a father for the 2nd time. With the additional family responsibilities, he wanted to improve his prospects in order to pursue a new career. Richard is going on to the University of Bradford in September to study Nursing: "I looked into it a while back, but opted against it as the timing didn’t quite feel right. I’m ready now, I’m determined because I still have at least 25 years of a career left and Nursing is what I want to dedicate that portion of my life to. It’s tough. I don’t have a moment to myself, but my family have certainly been a catalyst for me to go on and achieve something better."
THE BLOSSOMING YOUTH Sophie, Level 2 & 3 Floristry
Having completed her GCSE’s, Sophie set her sights on securing a future as a Florist by enrolling on a Level 2 & 3 Floristry course: "I came along to an Open Day, got some great advice and decided pretty much immediately that this is where I wanted to learn." Sophie has worked part-time for a local Florist since the age of 14 and says: "After Shipley College, I’d like to go on and get a degree, before hopefully starting my own business." As part of her Level 3 course, Sophie, took part in the Silver Award winning entry at Harrogate Flower Show 2014: "It was a great experience. We all worked really hard and managed to come away with 2nd place." We fully expect Sophie to go on and achieve her ambitions!

Idle Charity Shop reaches first year mark
Our Idle shop celebrates 1 year of opening on December 4th and has been a real success in the local community. We quickly built up a regular customer and donor base and there are always fantastic bargains to be had in the shop. We have a large space to fill and have added furniture items to those regularly offered by charity shops. Age UK Bradford’s aim is simple – to help people over the age of 50 make more of life. We are a local charity that campaigns for and provides services and products for older people. Many of the services are delivered direct to the old and vulnerable in their own homes. We also operate a busy Information and Advice Centre in Bradford City Centre, who also offer a wide range of competitively priced insurance products. We now have 9 community shops which sell donated clothing, books and bric a brac as well as small electrical items and these are a vital source of funding for the services and products that the Charity aims to deliver. A steady flow
of donations in crucial to our shops, many of which are Gift Aided which means we receive a further 25% from HMRC providing the donor is a tax payer. You don’t even have to be working to pay tax and it costs you nothing but can make a huge difference to us. We have volunteer opportunities too which allow people to learn and develop new skills as well as putting into practice those which have been gained through life experience. Age UK is the country’s largest charity dedicated to helping everyone make the most of later life. The over-60s is the fastest-growing group in society and there are more of us than ever before. Ageing is not an illness, but it can be challenging. At Age UK we provide services and support at a national and local level to inspire, enable and support older people.We stand up and speak for all those who have reached later life, and also protect the long-term interests of future generations.

THE COLOUR OF SUCCESS One of the local businesses helped by Kickstart Enterprise Coach, Mike Whitehouse, is Tiffany Park owner of Tiffany Park the salon in Eccleshill. Tiffany from Eccleshill opened her first salon in Cleckheaton at the age of 21 and built the business up over a ten year period, at which point she sold the business to move to Huddersfield, where over the next 10 years she opened another 3 salons. Eventually Tiffany decided to take a year out and trained for a degree in lecturing at Huddersfield University, enabling her to open her own hairdressing training school. This was an idea she wanted to bring back to her home town of Bradford and so with the help of Mike from Kicksatrt Bradford, she found the perfect premises, wrote her business plan and opened Tiffany Park the salon in Eccleshill. Mike was also there to make important introductions to key contacts who could help Tiffany to achieve her dream and through their monthly meetings, Mike continues to offer invaluable support and together they are now putting everything in place to open the upper floor of the salon with a Tanning Suite and a Beauty Room which will be open from the end of September, and the final piece in the jigsaw will be the hairdressing school which Tiffany is hoping to open next year.
