Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Andy Routledge feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Bradford, Bingley & Baildon areas and Andy is finding that his approach is a

major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done

work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Andy a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Read on for a glimpse of current students enjoying our courses, if you like what you see we are open for enrolments all summer - call 011774 327327 today!

A FRAME OF ELEGANCE Susan, Painting with Watercolours

Susan has been retired for 5 years now, she says of her experience at Shipley College: "I love the history and heritage that Saltaire has, it’s an inspiring place to be". Susan is currently on the committee of the National Art fund: "I have a strong personal interest in art and always have done, so I searched online for courses locally and felt that Shipley College was the right choice. I would certainly recommend it as a place to learn for retirees."

TAKING THE NEXT STEP IN YOUR CAREER Husarm, Accountancy AAT Level 2 Certificate

Husarm started out at Shipley College with an apprenticeship in Customer Services based at Bradford & Bingley (now UK Asset Resolution). He was offered a full-time job there and is looking to take the next step in his career. Husarm decided to specialise in finance by studying the Accountancy AAT Level 2 Certificate. “I enjoyed doing my apprenticeship at Shipley College so it was my first choice when looking for a part-time course. The tutors are really helpful, they make sure you build your knowledge of accountancy and ensure you are prepared for your exams.”

THE NEW CAREER MAN

Richard, Access to Health & Social Care Professionals Richard spent 25 years working as a printer and has recently become a father for the 2nd time. With the additional family responsibilities, he wanted to improve his prospects in order to pursue a new career. Richard is going on to the University of Bradford in September to study Nursing: "I looked into it a while back, but opted against it as the timing didn’t quite feel right. I’m ready now, I’m determined because I still have at least 25 years of a career left and Nursing is what I want to dedicate that portion of my life to. It’s tough. I don’t have a moment to myself, but my family have certainly been a catalyst for me to go on and achieve something better."

THE BLOSSOMING YOUTH Sophie, Level 2 & 3 Floristry

Having completed her GCSE’s, Sophie set her sights on securing a future as a Florist by enrolling on a Level 2 & 3 Floristry course: "I came along to an Open Day, got some great advice and decided pretty much immediately that this is where I wanted to learn." Sophie has worked part-time for a local Florist since the age of 14 and says: "After Shipley College, I’d like to go on and get a degree, before hopefully starting my own business." As part of her Level 3 course, Sophie, took part in the Silver Award winning entry at Harrogate Flower Show 2014: "It was a great experience. We all worked really hard and managed to come away with 2nd place." We fully expect Sophie to go on and achieve her ambitions!

IN SUPPORT OF

YORKSHIRE WOMEN Of Achievement Awards 2014

T

here can be no doubt that there are some truly outstanding Yorkshire women and every year they are honoured at a wonderful awards ceremony which also raises funds for Sue Ryder, a national charity with hospices in Leeds and Oxenhope, providing incredible care for people with incurable illnesses, as well as supporting their families and loved ones. There is also a Sue Ryder neurological care centre near York and a number of community care services and befriending programmes in Leeds, Bradford and Doncaster. The awards ceremony itself had six categories and anyone can nominate a Yorkshire woman for their achievements in Business, Education or Sport or for The Young Achiever of the Year or the Jane Tomlinson Award for Courage; from all category winners there is then one outstanding person chosen to be Overall Woman of Achievement for that year. This year I was lucky enough to be invited by my friend, Deana Morgan who owns and runs DM Academy in Shipley, which teaches all types of dance and performing arts to hundreds of youngsters and adults throughout the area. Deana was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 and, following her ordeal she has devoted her time to raising

awareness of breast cancer. Deana is an Ambassador for The Haven breast cancer support centres and attends many charity events with her former star pupil, Kimberley Walsh. Deana was nominated for the Jane Tomlinson Award for Courage for her wonderful charity work, by two of her former pupils; this was a great honour for Deana and although it was not to be her year to win the category, we all had such a wonderful day in the company of over 650 outstanding women from Yorkshire, that we all felt truly honoured just to be there. The event took us through every emotion you can imagine, we were uplifted by courageous nominees’ stories in the face of some terrible adversity; we laughed with our host, journalist and broadcaster, Liz Green and we cried with overall winner Councillor Valerie Binney, who has had a distinguished career in the service of others and has been a councillor since 1982 and Lord Mayor of Bradford and is currently Councillor for Thornton and Allerton. In 2012 she was diagnosed with motor neurone disease and despite this debilitating illness she has continued to be an active councillor serving on committees and being the voice for the local community.

What a day. What an event. What fantastic women we have in our Yorkshire region, I have never been as proud as I was on that day to be a Yorkshire lass!

Spring Open Day a Great Success!

T

he RSPCA Bradford & District Open Day in May was a great success, despite the poor weather,

supporters of the charity turned out in good numbers for a great day out. To keep everyone entertained there was an army vehicle display by the 101st Airborne Northwest Division, a dog show, live music by a local rock band, tours of the centre and lots of stalls selling food, bric-a-brac and RSPCA goods; on the day over £800 was raised, which will go towards the ongoing improvements being made to the centre facilities. The next Open Day Event is Sunday 24th August 2014, put the date in your diary and enjoy a wonderful family day out and discover what a wonderful job the team at the RSPCA Bradford and District do.

Operation Animal Save!

T

he demands at the centre in Bradford are increasing on a daily basis and to be able to offer the animals in their

The latest plans are upgrading the ferret house, building a cat isolation unit and main cattery where cats and their kittens are kept in isolation to decrease the chances of infection; development of the puppy block and extending the exercise yard are also in the plan. We would like to appeal for local businesses to donate materials or their time and expertise to help us achieve these important improvements, any help is always greatly appreciated. The target is £125,000 to complete the project, however if money can be saved through the donation of materials and labour that is wonderful.

STAYING SAFE Whilst many of us like to enjoy the sun & hot weather, we should make sure we do it safely. Extreme heat can force the body into overdrive as it tries to stay cool through perspiration & evaporation. NIVEA SUN & Cancer Research UK have come up with three top tips to help people enjoy the sun safely: 1. Spend time in the shade if your shadow is shorter than you. If your shadow is shorter than you are, then the sun

Bring a bottle Keep a handy-sized bottle of sunscreen in your handbag

is strong. During the UK summer, the sun is at its strongest

(Cancer Research UK recommends at least SPF15+) so

between 11am and 3pm

that you’ll always have some to hand for parts of the

2. Wear a hat, t-shirt and sunglasses when the sun’s strong. Wide brimmed hats or foreign legion style caps are best. A wide-brimmed hat, long-sleeved top or maxi dress will not only help protect your skin but are also the height of summer style! 3. Cancer Research UK recommends you use at least factor 15 sunscreen with a high star rating. Sunscreen rubs off easily if you sweat, swim or change clothes. So whether you’re in the UK or abroad, when the sun is strong remember to apply generously and reapply regularly.

Also remember: Don’t get caught out at home. The sun can be strong in the UK as well as abroad, so it’s not just when you’re on holiday that you need to think about protecting your skin in the sun. And you don’t need to be sunbathing to get sunburn; plenty of people get sunburn when out and about playing sport, shopping or gardening

body you can’t cover up with clothes. That way you won’t get caught out on days when you’re out and about and the sun is strong. Make sure you reapply regularly and use a generous amount

Protect your kids Young skin is delicate and easily sunburnt. Make sure your children are wearing t-shirts and wide-brimmed hats when out in strong sun and cover any exposed areas with sunscreen. It’s a good idea to encourage them to have breaks in the shade for a game or a cool drink, particularly between 11am and 3pm (in the UK summer) when the sun is usually strongest. If you’re using a buggy, attaching a parasol is a useful way of keeping your children cool and protected from strong sun.

To find out more about this service there will be informal presentations held at The Yorkshire Clinic. If you would like to reserve a place on one of these events please contact us on 01274 550655

The Dubrovnik Hotel Supports Bradford & Airedale Cancer Support A special evening for ladies was held at the Dubrovnik Hotel, Oak Lane Bradford on Friday 28th March in aid of Cancer Support Bradford & Airedale. The event organised by Sharon Tyson from the hotel, Karen TothJones of Party Perfection (party and event organisers) and Angela Riches of MAD Publications Ltd was a great success. Over 150 ladies attended and were welcomed with a glass of bubbly served by topless waiters before browsing various stalls and sitting down to a 3 course meal. A fashion show, entertainment and dressing up for the photo booth, was also included. It was a fun packed event and the ladies dug deep playing the tombola, games and raffle run by Jayne Preston from Barclays Bank. An amazing £1,452.00 was raised on the night and Barclays contributed an additional £1,000 under their matched funding scheme. The money will help the charity to support local patients & families with the practical and emotional issues that a cancer diagnosis can bring.

DON'T WASTE THE SUNSHINE!

ith the unpredictable W British weather and shorter days creeping up

on us, now is a good time to make the most of the sunlight we do have: Let the light in! Open your blinds and curtains while you’re inside, and welcome the light into your home. Just because the days are getting shorter doesn’t mean we should retreat to our caves. When the sun is out, take advantage of it. Even if it’s just a short walk or jog, enjoy at least a few minutes of sunshine each day. Of course, always remember the sunscreen and shades, even on overcast days. If it’s warm enough, eat your lunch outside. Depending on where you live, there may be either a lot of sun or virtually no sun, but if it’s a relatively nice day, enjoy it!

THE HOP The New 'Old' Tramshed The Old Tramshed is reinvented as The Hop Saltaire Bar & Kitchen The Old Tramshed in Saltaire has long been a popular drinking and eating venue and in recent years also built a strong reputation for great live music with bands and tribute acts, however investment in the building was long overdue and everything was looking a little dated and tired, in short it needed some love and attention‌and some money spending on it. Now under the new ownership of Ossett Brewery, it has had all of

a transformation it is. Every area (including the private function room) has been re-carpeted, decorated and re-branded, even the furniture, fixtures and fittings are new to complete the new look. Emphasis at The Hop Saltaire is on well-kept real ales, great food, excellent service and amazing tribute act dinners, with acts including Robbie Williams, Bob Marley, Take That, Michael Buble, The Rat Pack and loads more. FLOORS TO MATCH YOUR IMAGINATION & yo u r b u d g e t

Who are we?

Why use LJ Flooring?

LJ Flooring is the brainchild of local Shipley couple, Louise and James Marsden. James has built an enviable reputation for his fitting skills over the years and appreciates the immediate improvement a well-fitting carpet can make to a room, however he has often been embarrassed by the prices some people feel they have to pay to get the carpet they want and realised that if carpets and flooring was sold direct to the customer with samples shown in your own home, not only would this considerably cut down on the initial cost of the purchase, it would also give each customer the opportunity to see the different colours, styles and patterns in situ. Step in Louise; this is where Louise can visit you at your convenience with her many samples, take instruction on your ideas and budget and help you to decide exactly what will be the perfect choice for you, your lifestyle, your home and your budget.

With over 24 years fitting experience in the domestic market, James is a perfectionist and takes ultimate pride in every room he transforms and all fitting is guaranteed for 12 months. Our aim is to provide great floors at reasonable prices; we take great pride in every aspect of our work from the sale to the installation. Our reputation is our bond and the fact that many of our customers recommend us to their family and friends and also take the time to comment on our Facebook page speaks volumes. Here’s what some of our customers have to say: “Great service, quality carpets. Thank you!” – Nadia from Cullingworth “I used LJ Flooring and was amazed at the professionalism and customer care I received.” – Chris Butler from Bingley “Great customer service, prompt and very helpful in choosing the carpet, friendly and reasonably priced. Will definitely use LJ Flooring again and will also recommend them. Thanks James and Louise.” – Julie Gudgean of Idle

What makes us different? The main difference is the one point of contact, Louise and James do not outsource any area of their business and this ensures continuity, the personal touch, no middleman or chances for breakdown in communication. People buy from people at the end of the day, however if you can save some money at the same time and put it towards another project or a well-earned holiday, then that’s a bonus. The fact that there are no staffing costs and no shop overheads mean substantial savings that are passed on to every customer.
