‘Let’s have your bright ideas,’ says Positive Bradford group
Bradford people unhappy with the image of their city and the negative comments it attracts were offered a chance to do something about it. Positive Bradford, a new group which has pledged to speak up for Bradford, invited ideas encouraging local people to be more optimistic about their city’s future. At the group’s meeting at the Midland Hotel the door was open to anyone keen to make a contribution Positive Bradford, an independent, not-for-profit group, comprises leaders from local businesses, the arts and education who share a determination to challenge the city’s critics. A key date for action has already been agreed. Wednesday, September 28 will be Positive Bradford Day, when Centenary Square
will be packed with entertainment and information. Says Jane Vincent, co-founder of Positive Bradford: “We need people who care about Bradford as much as we do to let us have their bright ideas, as well as offering support on the day. “There have been many previous attempts by different pro-Bradford groups to persuade people to think more positively about the city, some more successful than others. But the underlying problem remains. It’s time to stand up and speak up for Bradford.” To register to attend the planning event on April 5 go to the following website: www.wegottickets.com/event/112047 Anyone wishing to attend but wishing to obtain more information about Positive Bradford can e-mail Jane Vincent at: jane@candelisapeople.co.uk or call 07767 - 797555.
JJB Reviews-
Jack Bottomley on film
Out now: Rango (PG) Dazzlingly subversive and inventive animated film about a Chameleon who discovers his identity in an impoverished town called Dirt. The varied voice-work by Johnny Depp as the hero of sorts is diverse and excellent. The film boasts some truly charming and odd characters, all well rendered by the sublime animation. Rango is anything but a mindless kids flick and with its reference to films like Sergio Leone's A Fistful of Dollars trilogy and its deep themes it will please adults all the more. This is a film fans film and one which boasts something for even the pickiest viewer.
Battle: Los Angeles (12A) Disappointing Sci-Fi action film about a group of marines who attempt to save Los Angeles from an invading alien race. The effects and setpieces are good but there is little beyond that, the film is overlong and ends on a truly ridiculous finale. Also the dialogue is cheesy and the overly backslapping patriotism and moral standpoints wear extremely thin throughout. You could certainly do worse but absolutely do better in a film which is a missed opportunity.
Limitless (15) A great Techno-Thriller boasting a truly intriguing plot about a drug called NZT, which can allow you to use 100% of your brain capacity. Starring Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro, this is a well acted and written thriller. An achieved sense of this rush of power is gained through colourful effects and camerawork and it makes the film move at a break neck pace creating more excitement.
whereby Captain Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal) finds himself in another persons identity and must solve a bomb plot using a machine called the Source Code.
Sucker Punch (12A)- 1 s t April Anticipated and Visually impressive film from Zack Snyder about a girl who has been institutionalised by her stepfather and who forms a relationship with other girls, who all retreat to a fantasy world to complete a quest and escape their impending fate.
Rio 3D (PG)- 8 th April Colourful animation about a rare Blue Macaw taken to breed with a female in Rio but chaos soon forces the unwilling pair together. Features the voices of Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg.
Thor (12)- 29 th April Kenneth Branagh directs this highly anticipated comic book adaptation, starring Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins. About hero Thor (Chris Hemsworth) cast to earth by his father but ultimately being our only hope against invaders.
Winnie The Pooh (U)- 15 th April Disney animation's 51st feature is a hand drawn adaptation of AA Milne's classic creation, in which Winnie and the group go on an adventure to find Eyore's a tail. John Cleese narrates.
Fast Five- 22 nd April

Update Your Wardrobe I
t’s that time of the year again. Spring is here and it’s time to celebrate by updating your wardrobe and this season there are so many hot trends emerging, you’ll have plenty to choose from! Here are the Hottest Fashion Trends for Spring-Summer season according to fashion gurus from Elle, Vogue and InStyle. Bold Belts … Dressing up your outfit with a bright bold belt is one of the easiest ways to update your look. If you wearing a black outfit, opt for a thick colorful belt that will instantly add character and style.
Who said a belt should be made of leather or fabric? Try a more daring version of a belt with a soft summer dress, the contrast between the two will play up your whole outfit for the summer. See how much more floating the silk in the pictures is? It’s all about contrast …
Big Earrings, Bangles and Necklaces … Bright jewellery is the best way to dress up any outfit. And this season bold jewellery is as hot as ever!
Or show your dangerous side wearing a belt with an animal pattern or a belt made of faux exotic skin!
14
Although, there is one rule of wearing it, Girls, there is such a thing as “TOO MUCH” when it comes to wearing bold pieces of jewellery. To play it right, wear 2 pieces (either earrings and bangles or bangles and rings or rings and necklace etc.) at a time and you will look positively fabulous!
Spring is here! Necklaces are getting bolder and brighter as well. Worn over a dress or a T-shirt, a bold necklace will glam up your whole look; AND a bold necklace can make you look slimmer – how fabulous is that?
White and Black … Go classic this year, pick a black’n’white spring dress or mix your white items with black ones. Pick a white belt, black heels and black earrings, or look for a black and white necklace to complete the look.

Calverley Post Office is the Best One!
C
alverley Post Office is so much more than just a post office, thanks to local family Asaf Hussain and his wife Waheeda, who took over the post office in May 2006. Having run the post office for a few years they realised there was a need for a friendly, community-focused convenience store to service the last minute and emergency requirements of the residents of Calverley and surrounding areas. Asaf explained: “Sometimes you get home after a busy day or even sometimes straight after doing your weekly shop, and you realise that you have forgotten one or two items but you really can’t face tackling the supermarket again. That’s why we have extended our services to fulfil the need for those last minute and odd items.” Following a recent refurbishment and extension of the existing post office, there is now an abundance of services and items on offer, all of which are easy to find due to the great use of space and clearly marked aisles and dedicated areas. Asaf and Waheeda, along with their three young sons, eight year old Saeed, six year old Kaiss and Suleyman five years, are an integral part of the Calverley community and looked long and hard for the right brand partner to work with to be able to offer the best selection of goods - and of course great promotions and prices! They eventually decided on Best One because they have an abundance of brilliant price saving offers that are passed on to the local community. It was also very important for the family to use local tradesmen to do the building and shop fitting work and Asaf would like to thank Calverley architect, Peter Bell, Calverley resident, Gary Hepworth, Calverley based painter and decorator, Gary Marshall, Farsley based electrician, Paul Jackson of Thorn Shop Fittings, and local builder Martin Horsmann, of Eccleshill, for their outstanding work. Also sincere thanks to Local Councillors Andrew Carter and Joe Marjoram during the project and to our customers for their support and patience during the building work and transitional period. Locally sourced items such as Woodland Honey, Lemon Curd, Marmalades, Preserves and Chutneys are also stocked, helping to support local cottage industries and new opening times from the end of April will enable the store to be more accessible by being open seven days a week. The official opening day is the Friday 15th April, there to cut the ribbon will be Jamie Peacock of the Leeds Rhinos and England Captain. This will be a great opportunity to raise funds for local charities such as Champion House, so make sure you put the date in your diary and come along to show your support. Whatever you need, from your road tax or a stamp to your favourite Pick ‘n’ Mix...Calverley Post Office is the Best One!

Deeva Celebrates its I
t started as a Methodist chapel and eventually became a legendary Leeds dance hall where young lovers twirled their way into each other’s hearts,
But it’s an altogether different kind of partnership that has given a Farsley building a spicy new lease of life. Zulfi Hussain and business partner, Sanjeev Johar, celebrated the first anniversary of the opening of their Indian restaurant Deeva - based in the former Porritt’s Ballroom on Sunday March 27th with an all day buffet and party for their loyal customers, family, friends and business partners. The building was born in the 1840s and, from its religious roots, soon became known as a ‘chapel of love’. Where couples once courted, many now sit and reminisce over a curry. One couple recently held their golden anniversary there - and burst into tears when they found themselves seated at the exact same spot where they had met 50 years earlier! And in its new incarnation, Deeva has proved to be one of Leeds’ biggest recession-busting success stories. The past 12 months have seen it laden with community and culinary awards - and the eaterie has topped one review website’s ‘best restaurant in Leeds’ list for 24 weeks straight!

First Birthday in Style! dream - but it has paid off deliciously. “It’s a unique partnership,” Mr Hussain, 48, said. “Sanjeev is Hindu, I am Muslim. He is Indian, I am Pakistani, and on a Friday and Saturday night it’s like the United Nations in here! I have come from a corporate world, he is the village postmaster. We have no regrets at all, although it’s been hard. “People thought we were mad, firstly because we are in a recession and secondly because restaurants don’t have a great survival rate - one in every four fail. It was a risk. But we have defeated the odds. “We have been very bullish in our approach with an exceptionally good team. We have gone against the current trend and we have made it successful.” Mr Hussain is a real believer in businesses needing to be at the heart of the communities they serve. The restaurant holds regular charity nights, and upcoming events include a Ladies’ Night for Breast Cancer Awareness, a fundraiser and a Porritts Night. Deeva has topped the Trip Adviser review website for almost six months consecutively. Mr Hussain said he is proud of his and his team’s massive achievement.

Get Your Business Started with Inspired Neighbourhoods
M
ike Whitehouse is currently working with over 75 new business people in Bradford East and has already been involved with assisting 25 new start ups since he joined the team at Inspired Neighbourhoods. Many people want to work for themselves and build up their own businesses, but everyone needs a little help to get started. At Inspired Neighbourhoods they recognise that the help they can give is to assist in achievement of goals. That can come in the shape of coaching or simply by putting people in touch with the contacts they need, and any advice or help given is totally confidential. Mike’s background includes 15 years in the private sector and five years in the public sector, all in Bradford and the surrounding area, including Undercliffe, Fagley, Idle and Shipley. He commented: “I am passionate about Bradford and firmly believe that the talent we possess in this city, particularly for new business start ups, is immense. At present we are merely scratching the surface of the number of new businesses that could be underway here. I would urge anyone who is serious about getting their ideas off the ground, but who needs a little additional advice along the way, to get in touch. So, instead of running your fingers through your hair over certain questions where you quite understandably don’t yet know the answer, give me a call. We are here to help as we have done with Luke, Melissa and Manzoor.” You can contact Mike Whitehouse on Tel: 07824 876600 or Email: michaelwhitehouse@inspiredneighbourhoods.co.uk Luke Spence started trading as Spence Plastering and Painting almost a year ago. Luke had worked with his father for nine years learning his trade, however, when recession hit he knew the time had come to try and make a go of his own business but wasn’t sure of the best way to get started and get the word out. While reading through a local newspaper, Luke saw an advert for a coaching and support programme and after making enquiries, Luke was assigned to Mike who advised him on marketing and worked on an action plan to target insurance companies to get Luke on their register of approved tradesmen. Luke commented, “It is great having someone to talk to. I work alone and Mike has been a great sounding board and with his knowledge, experience and wealth of contacts he is really helping me to develop my business.”
If you would like to know more about what Luke does, or if you would like a free estimate for plastering, painting or decorating then call Tel: 01274 631719 or Mobile: 07753 958040. Melissa Downing trained as a hairdresser seven years ago, but found she had more of an interest in beauty and make up so enrolled at Bradford College to train correctly and gain the relevant qualifications. Melissa always knew she wanted to work in her own business but was struggling to find premises and, without transport, going mobile was not an option. Eventually Melissa asked the Job Centre for assistance and they put her in touch with Mike and Inspired Neighbourhoods. Within no time Mike helped to find the perfect premises for Melissa to launch Urban Beauty, below Studio Hair in Undercliffe. Mike also helps Melissa around advertising, marketing, bookkeeping and support and helped in raising the necessary finances to get her up and running. Mike meets with Melissa regularly to keep the coaching process going and to ensure that she and Urban Beauty continue to be successful. For information on treatments available and to book an appointment with Melissa, call Tel: 01274 627659 or Mobile: 07594 694511. Manzoor Niazi worked in the fashion industry for fifteen years before becoming a victim of the recent recession. However, this has given Manzoor the opportunity to realise his dream of being self employed and with the help of Inspired Neighbourhoods and his coach, Mike Whitehouse, he has set up a web based business, Mani Fashions, as a printed t-shirt specialist. At www.manifashions.co.uk you can choose great cutting edge t-shirts with amazing designs for ladies, men and children. There’s a range of designs to choose from such as Tattoo Prints, Logos, Transfers and Names, or you can use your own designs on the t-shirts. Manzoor has had a great grounding working for local fashion houses and studied hard to achieve A Level Art, GCSE in Graphics, a BTEC National Diploma, an HND and a BA Honours and to be able to put all of this to such good use in such challenging times is testament to his hard work and dedication and to the mentoring process offered by Mike Whitehouse and Inspired Neighbourhoods. To see the range of designs available at Mani fashions visit: www.manifashions.co.uk or call Manzoor on Tel: 07754 047402.

ANTIQUES NEW ANTIQUE SHOP IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS A Pudsey cabinet making firm is celebrating its 91st year of trading with the opening of an antique shop. EL Schofield & Son which has operated in the town since 1920 recently opened Schofield Antiques, selling antiques, vintage furniture and collectables to both the general public and trade. Owner Steven Riley, who joined the firm 35 years ago as an apprentice said: ‘There is a growing market for both period pieces and vintage furniture for the home. We look forward to offering a selection of items that caters for all tastes.’ CABINET MAKING, FURNITURE RESTORATION & FRENCH POLISHING EL Schofield & Son was started by the late Edward Lance Schofield and now employs four highly skilled craftsmen at its workshop on New Street, off Carlisle Road, Pudsey. The firms’ specialist services include the production of bespoke hand crafted furniture. Regular commissions include studies, home offices, fitted lounge and dining room furniture, as well as free standing items such as occasional tables, bookcases and display cabinets. Mr Riley commented: ‘We are seeing more demand for bespoke furniture from younger people, in preference to the mass produced
and characterless items available on the high street.’ The firm also carries out full furniture repair and restoration, along with a French polishing service, using both traditional hand polishing and modern spray finishing techniques. Mr Riley said: ‘Our expert craftsmen are able to restore all types of furniture, from cherished antiques to everyday items, back to their original condition. ‘A good example is the restoration of a dining suite which can often be completed for significantly less than the cost of a new suite.’
Schofield Antiques on New Street, off Carlisle Road, Pudsey, LS28 8PE is open Monday to Thursday 9am to 4.30pm, Friday 9am to 3.30pm Saturday 10am to 2pm. For more information please call 0113 256 5308 or visit: www.elschofieldandson.co.uk.

nowing how important it is to create strong brand awareness, here at MAD Publications and Printing.com we decided it was time to update our corporate clothing and raise our profile to the next level, helping to keep us one step ahead of our competitors in these challenging times – a marketing investment we believe to be vital! So we turned to local corporate clothing and product provider, JJ Embroidery, in Crosshills. While Jenny worked in the knitwear industry in the 1970s, starting out as a knitting machine operator and working her way up to be the manageress over quality control, finishing and packaging. With their joint wealth of experience, they created JJ Embroidery in 1987, supplying a commission embroidery service to the footwear and clothing industry of the time. ook at your home through the eyes of a burglar. If you can get in without keys then so can a burglar. No forced entry is used in approximately one in four burglaries. Always secure your doors and windows whenever possible. Outside lighting will make your home less appealing to burglars and draw attention to anyone breaking in. In your absence from home give the impression that it is occupied by using timer switches on internal lights and perhaps leaving a radio on. Check any security you have has passed attack test standards. There are a range of doors, windows, locks and other security items that are available. Seek the advice of your local Crime Reduction Officer. Review your security at least every 12 months. Does it need updating? Are you complying with basic crime reduction advice?
Garden Wise Burglary of garden sheds and theft of garden equipment is one of the fastest growing crimes in the country. Your garden furniture and tools are very saleable items so you must make it as difficult as possible for any would be thief to get to your property. • Good locks should be fitted to shed doors and windows, always use them. • Purchase a shed/garage alarm – available at most DIY stores. • Postcode your property with either an ultra violet pen, permanent marker or by scratching on the details. • Remember to lock all doors and windows when out in the garden, do not make it easy for sneak in thieves. • Detail any particular identification marks on your property including damage marks. • Equipment should never be left unattended.
34
• Expensive or unusual items of equipment or garden ornaments should be photographed. • Walls, fences and gates should always be kept in good condition. • Illuminate dark areas of your garden where possible. • Screens for thieves to work behind should be avoided, keep hedges, shrubs and large plants cut back. • Plant bushes with thorns, especially under windows. • Gravel pathways or gravel under windows prevent a silent approach. • Neighbourhood Watch would be very beneficial, why not join one in your area or set one up if one doesn’t already exist.
Holidays As we are approaching the main holiday periods it is worth remembering that the local Neighbourhood Policing Team has initiated a Temporary Unoccupied Scheme (TUH). • All you need to do is to complete a form which is available by calling into Eccleshill police station, emailing or visiting the Neighbourhood Policing website (details below). • We will, whenever possible, visit your home whilst you are away to check all is in order.

Fantastic Looks, Charm, and Brilliant Handling Full Review
5. Performance
1. Exterior
There’s a choice of 95, 120 and 150bhp petrol or 90 and 110bhp diesel engines available, making the DS3 accessible for most driver’s budgets and needs. We drove the 150bhp THP, which makes the DS3 the hot hatch its looks suggest. It’s an engine co-developed with BMW for the MINI, and power is delivered smoothly and from very low revs, giving the DS3 real get-up-and-go, with a top speed of 133mph. For those seeking lower insurance and running costs, the non-turbo petrol engines make most sense, and Citroen expects the 120bhp petrol to be the best seller.
According to its manufacturer the Citroen DS3 is ‘anti-retro’, which is a bit of a dig at retro-inspired cars like MINI and Fiat 500. The DS3 is certainly a striking car, especially when finished in the most daring colour combinations on offer. Its most original feature is a ‘floating roof’, a trick of the eye by its designers made possible by discreet black window pillars. An optional vertical array of LED lights mounted either side of the front bumper, boomerang front and rear lights, bold alloy wheels and DS badging give the DS3 a style of its own.

6. Running costs
2. Interior
Even the hot hatch THP engine returns 42.2mpg on the combined cycle, emitting 155g/km. The 95 and 120bhp models manage 48.7 and 47.9mpg and emissions of 134 and 136g/km CO2. There’s a 99g/ km (74.3mpg) free-to-tax diesel with 90bhp, or a standard version with 104g/km of CO2 emissions (70.6mpg). The 110bhp D Sport model manages 62.8mpg and emits 118g/km of CO2. The DS3 is available with a fixed price servicing offer, costing £199 for services over the first three-years or 35,000 miles. Insurance group ratings range from 12E to 22E and BIK company car tax from 13 to 20 per cent.
The DS3 takes Citroen interiors on a step, building on the improvements already seen in the C3 Picasso. Dark soft touch materials, intricately designed dials and funky design touches are all welcome. An optional ‘white pack’ adds a white swathe across the dashboard, air vents and gear knob, giving the DS3 a bespoke feel. There’s a choice of fabric colours, which can be selected to match – or clash – with the car’s paint colour, depending on preference. For an extra cost a red or black leather upholstery can be specified too.
Our rating: 4
3. Practicality The DS3 is much more practical than the MINI and Fiat 500, with a 285 litre boot which can expand to 980 litres with the rear seats folded down. The MINI and Fiat 500’s measure 160 and 185 litres, while the Ford Fiesta has a 295 litre boot. Unlike the fivedoor Citroen C3, the DS3 is available only as a three-door model, but the rear seats are quite spacious once you get in the back.
Our rating: 4
7. Reliability Being based on the all-new Citroen C3, it’s a little early to say how reliable the DS3 will be. This is an area Citroen has come under flak for in the past, so great effort has been made to improve build quality, and this can be felt in the cabin and at high speeds where refinement is very good.
Our rating: 3
Our rating: 4
8. Safety
4. Ride and handling
The DS3 has been awarded the full five-stars in Euro NCAP crash tests, scoring 87 per cent for adult occupant protection. All trim levels come with ABS and ESP as standard as well as six airbags and ISOFIX rear child seat anchor points.
The 1.6 THP D-Sport model we tested was the most fun Citroen we’ve ever driven. The chassis strikes a great balance, with entertaining handling, without a bone-shaking ride. Light and accurate steering, a small and well-shaped wheel and a precise gearchange make driving a pleasure. Outright grip isn’t as huge as in the MINI Cooper S, but we loved the slightly softer and more cosseting ride of the DS3, along with its potential grin factor.
Our rating: 4
Our rating: 4
9. Equipment Four trim levels are available, all with a high level of standard kit. A leather steering wheel, CD player with steering wheel controls, front fog lights, electric door mirrors, cruise control, electric
windows and remote central locking are all standard. The rangetopping D Sport model boasts chrome rubbing strips, rear spoiler, twin exhausts, aluminium pedals and 17-inch alloy wheels. It also includes the ‘Connect Signature’ pack, with Bluetooth connectivity, USB socket, eight-speaker hi-fi and digital air-con.
Pros
Great styling True hot-hatch performance Funky interior
Our rating: 4
10. Why buy? The DS3 is Citroen’s best car in recent memory, with fantastic looks, charm and brilliant handling. It’s not quite as sporty as a MINI, but it’s more comfortable and grown-up.
Our rating: 5

RUN WITH EDDIE - JOIN US eeds United manager Simon Grayson is hoping to “Run With Eddie” later this year - and is urging the club’s fans to join him.
Subject to his summer plans, the Leeds boss will be taking part in the Jane Tomlinson 10k in June, and is hoping the Elland Road faithful will follow him by signing up to support two good causes. Club legend Eddie Gray is leading a campaign which will see all fans who register to “Run With Eddie” raise money for both the Jane Tomlinson Appeal and the Leeds United Foundation. A number of Leeds fans have already signed up to take part and now the Elland Road manager has pledged his support to take part the race, which takes place on Sunday June 19. “I think this is a great opportunity for Leeds fans to get involved. It’s for a great cause. Jane was an inspiration to a lot of people and Mike has carried on all her good work. Obviously the Leeds United Foundation will also benefit from the people who take up this challenge and that will allow for increased work within the city and the communities. “It’s an opportunity for people to get out there, get themselves in shape, and raise money for good causes. It doesn’t involve loads of training it’s given me a goal to aim for - and it’s a great opportunity. Leeds is a fantastic city, this is a fantastic occasion, and it’s a fantastic cause.” The race is now in its fifth year and has raised over £2m for charities both locally and nationally since its inception. Jane’s appeal benefits a number of charities around the region while the Foundation is a charitable trust, and funds raised will be ploughed into social inclusion courses around the city. All monies raised by those who “Run With Eddie” will be split equally between the Jane Tomlinson Appeal and the Leeds United Foundation. To register to join Simon and Eddie Gray, you should visit https:// regonline.activeeurope.com?eventID=907707&rTypeID=42830 and where prompted enter the pin LU92FC or e-mail media@leedsunited. com for a link to the registration page. New loan signing Jake Livermore is relishing the prospect of pulling on a Leeds United shirt and playing his part in the club’s promotion push. The Tottenham youngster joined on loan until the end of the season and
38
completed the formalities on transfer deadline day before joining his new team-mates for his first training session as a Leeds player. And with eight games still to play, Jake says he is here to help. “It’s what you play football for, the big games, and I want to help,” said Jake. “There was a few clubs interested, but Leeds is a massive club with a massive fanbase and a good set of lads and I want to do my best to help them. “There are eight games left, they’re all cup finals and if we can’t do it automatic, there’s the Play-Offs.” Jake arrives with plenty of experience in the Championship, having had loan spells with both Derby County and Ipswich Town. The 21-year-old arrives having 44 career appearances to his name. “I broke my leg at 17 and was out for a year, and since then I’ve been on loan to a few clubs and been back and forth to Tottenham.,” he explained. “I’ve been recalled a few times, and this seemed like a good idea for both clubs to come here. “I spoke to Aaron (Lennon), Danny Rose, and Jonathan Woodgate only had positive things to say about the place.” Jake’s first day had something of a twist with the morning training session being followed by an afternoon trip to Pole Position in Leeds for a Go-Karting session. “I had a good day,” he said. “Training was good, we went Go-Karting in the afternoon, and although I do know a few of the lads here, it was a good way of getting to know people.”

TAYLOR OUT JACKO IN I
n the last edition of Here and Now I touched on a rumour that had been circulating Valley Parade at the Bury game which indicated Peter Taylor may move to Newcastle Utd - well that of course didn’t happen. This indeed split the fans into two camps, one camp seemed to think he needed time to develop the squad he had at Valley Parade and the other camp wanted to see the back of Peter Taylor after witnessing some pretty awful football this season. Well just prior to the home game against relegation favourites Stockport, Taylor decided he was leaving after that game. The game proved to be one of the most exciting in his reign as manager with City scrapping a 3-2 victory in the dying moments of the game. So it was goodbye Peter and hello Peter as ex City player Peter Jackson took charge as an interim manager, now some fans including myself welcomed the move and looked forward to better times ahead. It’s safe to say Jacko, as he is affectionately known, has a different style of management and in the first instance performance levels rose. However it’s fair to say after five games Jacko has had mixed fortunes. Now it would surprise me if Jacko wasn’t one of the six applicants on a short list for the job and speculation is running wild with the front runners for the position being John Still and Dagenham, Alan Knill at Bury, John Colman at Accrington and John Hughes from Scottish football being the favourites. Mark Lawn, our joint chairman, has hinted that the new manager will probably be installed before the end of the season so it would appear whoever this new man in the Valley Parade hot seat is he’ll have a full close season to get things right.
pity we at the Shipley Bantams couldn’t make the event - however, we did make an appearance at the venue pre-match where a comedian entertained a packed Bradford City audience. Many thanks must go to Daniel Thornton, the General Manager, and the hard working staff of the caravan park who organised the events; Daniel is a big City fan and can be seen at every City game home and away. Well done Dan - book us all in for next season please. So after that fantastic build up it was a short walk across the road to the brand new Globe Arena which is almost a mirror image of their old ground Christie Park. Some of our younger fans had hung around the ground earlier in the day to welcome the team and grab some autographs and the odd photo. Although the game was tense and littered with mistakes including a missed penalty (again) we managed a 1-0 win, what a great return to Bradford, and great day out with some great football fans. It went down as one of the better away trips, no trouble just a great fun day out. So at the time of writing we have eight games left and a great chance for yours truly to chalk off another new ground at Stevenage, 90 down just two grounds to go and with Plymouth looking like they may be relegated into our league we just need Fulham in next year’s FA Cup to complete the 92. So let’s hope the next time you read this article City have made it to safety with plenty of games to spare and we have a new manager who will take us UP UP UP! CTID.
In some ways it will seem harsh on Peter Jackson if he steers City away from the relegation zone, however, I feel the joint chairmen have to get this one right as it seems some fans have already had enough of our constant battles season after season not even producing as much as a playoff spot. I certainly don’t envy them their task and wish them luck with their selection. From one ex manager, in the form of Peter Taylor, to another one. Stuart McCall appeared at The Regent Caravan Park in Morecambe the evening before the Morecambe fixture where many City fans turned the place Claret and Amber. From all the reports it was a great evening and Stuart was on top form telling tales of his footballing life. It’s a great

Challenge Cup Fourth Round
Rhinos v Crusaders
L
eeds Rhinos have been drawn against Crusaders in the Fourth Round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup, which will be played on Saturday 7th May, kick off 3.15pm.
The game is the only all Super League tie in the draw and will be screened live on BBC The two sides last met in the Cup on 18th April 2008 when Leeds beat Crusaders in the Fourth Round 38-16, the year before they entered Super League. The two sides met in pre-season when Leeds won at the Racecourse Ground, however, the Crusaders recorded a historic win at Headingley Carnegie in Super League last season, helped by now Rhino Weller Hauraki. Leeds Rhinos Head Coach Brian McDermott says that his side will not be taking Crusaders lightly when the two sides meet. He commented: “We played Crusaders in pre-season and we know they are a very useful side. We saw the majority of their win at the Magic weekend first hand as they played before us and you could see the quality they have. They might be bottom of the table but the Fourth Round is the start of a new competition and everyone starts at the same point. “It is a big advantage to play at home in such a prestigious tournament as the Carnegie Challenge Cup. The fact that we were runners up last season will not play a part in our build up to the game. I am sure the players involved last year will not be laying awake thinking about it ahead of this game because the only way they can do anything about it is to perform in this year’s competition to the best of their ability,” added McDermott. In a twist of fate, Crusaders are now coached by Iestyn Harris, the last Leeds player to lift the Challenge Cup back in 1999. And McDermott is aware of the appetite for another chance to own the famous trophy. He said “The Leeds fans want the Carnegie Challenge Cup and I think that it is a fair expectation, that is not something I will shy away from. As a group of staff and players we would like to achieve it too but there are many other clubs who want to do that too, including Crusaders, who will fancy their chances.” Season ticket holders will receive free entry to the Fourth Round tie plus junior season ticket holders will receive free entry up to and including the Quarter Final stage.
40
Tickets for this match start at £20 for Adults, £13 for concessions and £12 for Juniors. They can be purchased either at the ticket office, over the phone on 0871 423 1315 (calls are charged at 10pence per minute) or online at www.therhinos.co.uk. All transactions carried out by a credit/debit card are subject to a £1.50 booking fee. Gates will open on match day at 12.15pm and the ticket office and retail store will be open from 9am until 20 minutes after the final whistle of the match. Get healthy with the Rhinos Following on from the success of a similar programme last year, the Leeds Rugby Foundation have once again teamed up with Leeds Community Healthcare NHS to offer male fans the chance to improve their health. Starting on 6th April and running for eight weeks, the T.R.Y. programme is a free course to help men set realistic goals towards a healthier lifestyle. T.R.Y. stands for Time to Reduce Your weight. Each week there is 45 minute discussion based on nutrition, physical activity and changing habits and a 45 minute physical activity session which will include taster touch rugby sessions, circuit based sessions and the use of the Leeds Rhinos gym. The courses are run by Specialist NHS Dieticians, Physical Activity Advisors and the Leeds Rugby Foundation staff. Not done exercise for years? Don’t let that hold you back! The physical activity sessions cater for all individual abilities and fitness levels. When are the courses? Wednesday evenings between 6.30pm and 8.15pm. There are two eight week courses this summer, the first starting on 6th April followed by the next block from 8th June. What’s the cost? Nothing, it’s free! Call us now on 0113 843 2395 to book your place on the either of the courses.

Bull’s players have also got behind the efforts with Rikki Sheriffe and Craig Kopczak pictured on their recent visit to pupils at Springwood Primary School, Manningham for an afternoon of Rugby League fun, whilst Glenn Hall and Heath L’Estrange brave the cold at the Emerging 9’s competition to support and pose for photos - this one with Yr 9 entrants from Challenge College. Community Rugby League Coach Duane Straugheir’s efforts have also being seen recently with both Challenge College and Dixons Academy (Allerton) breaking through to compete in the latest Bradford & Keighley Emerging 9’s competition, held at St Bede’s Grammar School. “It was pleasing to see so many local kids of various ethnicities coming together and actively competing- but more importantly really enjoying- Rugby League.”“It makes my job so satisfying when I see a number of age-groups from one school represented at something like this when a few weeks ago they had limited interest, we just need to ensure we back this up and promote the transition from school to club.” If you, or someone you know, are interested in becoming involved in any aspect of our work within this area (e.g. participating,
