Bulletins - Confidential Project
Professional Work - BHDP
I’m not certain how confidential this project is, given that it’s currently under construction, but I’ll err on the side of caution for now and not name the project. I worked on this project extensively both summers I worked at BHDP, doing a variety of drawing and modeling. The most significant of these tasks was to manage the submission of two bulletins while both architects I worked under were either out of the office or preoccupied with other work in the two weeks leading up to the bulletin’s scheduled release. This meant it fell to me to ensure that all of the firm’s drawings were prepared and issued on time. In both cases, the architectural set was ready to go out at least a full day ahead of the deadline. The two sheets on the right were both issued in one or both of the two bulletins, and I did a substantial amount of work on both of them. I modeled and detailed everything for the top right drawing, and I modeled and detailed a considerable amount of what’s shown in the lower right. I also did a considerable amount of the notations for the sheet on the bottom left.

Professional Work - Wright Heerema Architects
This building is a new clinic being constructed outside of Chicago. WHA was hired to do the building shell while another firm does the interior. My involvement in this project was to do the vast majority of the Revit work. I modeled a majority of the building from the designer’s drawings, did all the file set up, and worked closely with the project manager to do some of the details drawings. Professional Work - Wright Heerema Architects
WHA was commissioned to renovate the interior of this building for its new tenant. My role was to model the existing shell and core conditions in Revit in as much detail as possible from old drawings, photos, and a site visit. After modeling the existing conditions the model was given to a designer to incorporate the new work. I’ve included this project due to the intricacies of the façade, which is all modeled. There aren’t any detail lines in the elevations. Project Information: Firm: Wright Heerema Architects Date: Fall 2017 Supervisors: Maribeth Schwind

Revit Library Updates & Family Development
Professional Work - Various Firms
Over my last three co-ops I’ve occasionally had the opportunity to build new Revit families, whether it be for a single project or to update the firm’s Revit library. I’ve included some of the better ones here. Each of these families is parametric to some level, depending on the firm’s needs. Some are so parametric as to allow the user to change every dimension, others are more limited to overall dimensions and visibility.

Lamar University Baseball Field
Professional Work - Morris / Huitt-Zollars
Huitt-Zollars was asked to explore potential renovations to the Lamar University baseball field including a new coaches office/locker room building, a shade over a portion of the stands, and a sort of entry plaza with a beer garden outside the stadium. I produced all the concept images for this project taking into consideration structural and design recommendations from my supervisor and coworkers. The most recent rendering of the shade is below and the most recent renderings for the entry plaza are to the right. My project was among the 10 produced by Virginia Tech students that was sent to Richmond to be considered for the prize. The objective was to design an oyster hatchery in Norfolk over a weekend. As populations rise and the oceans become increasingly depleted, the importance of aquaculture in regions where fishing is a primary industry cannot be understated. Facilities like this one will become more and more important, as will fostering an interest and knowledge of aquaculture in order to ensure that there are people devoted to its proliferation. To that effect, I’ve designed a building that can serve as an educational opportunity for people wanting to learn more about oyster farming. By placing everything in the open and using glass tanks to clearly show the process by which oysters move through the system, students will be able to easily visualize the growth process, while at the same time not inhibiting the ability of workers at the facility to do their jobs on the elevated catwalk, away from visitors. Alexandria Housing
Academic Work
The city of Alexandria, Virginia, has developed a master plan for the redevelopment of the Potomac Yards neighborhood, currently occupied by a strip mall. A portion of this plot has been purchased by Virginia Tech for a new innovation campus. The project for the semester was to choose at least one plot of land from this master plan and design a medium to high density apartment building. I arrived at my basic form very quickly. Although it wasn’t my intention, from there the project largely developed into a study in laying out irregular units. With over 100 unique unit layouts, a considerable amount of time was spent laying them out, and there still wasn’t nearly enough time to finish. Massing Diagram from the North East Corner
1. Start by extruding the mass from the desired setbacks up to the maximum allowable height.
26
2. Curve two edges to reduce the number of faces and to meet the zoning requirements.
3. Split the mass along a curve, creating a sloped roof to meet the building height requirements.
4. Slope the short edge curve inward to create a more dynamic facade and a larger plaza on the north side.
5. Cut a courtyard into the middle, with the north wall sloped to match the exterior, to allow more light inside. 27

Typical Floor Plan Floors 2-6 Levels 2-6 are all largely the same shape, however the northern curved façade extends further north each level. As such each floor in these levels gets slightly bigger. The double loaded corridor on the north side of the building expands to create more public space for residents on these floors. The narrowest point is still within the minimum IBC hallway width requirements. 1
Typical Floor Plan 1/16" = 1'-0"
Typical Parking Plan There are two levels of underground parking with a ramp between them located next to the north stairwell. The master plan requires 1 parking spot per unit and 3.5 parking spots for every 1,000 ft² of retail space. The building has 280 units and approximately 26,500 ft² of retail spaces, requiring 373 total spaces.

Typical Floor Plan Floors 7-15 Levels 7-15 gradually taper up by level towards the north most point. Levels 13-15 are above the atrium and are primarily triangular in shape, which presented considerable challenges in laying out units. The walls in the double loaded corridor on the north side of the building are parallel to make it possible to fit a couple more units than would be possible with the tapering corridor. 1
Level 9 Presentation Plan 1/16" = 1'-0"
Ground Floor Plan The ground floor is primarily made up of retail spaces along the perimeter that can be rented out to a wide variety of stores and restaurants. In addition, there is a building leasing office across the street from the new Virginia Tech innovation campus and indoor bike parking along the courtyard.

As there is very little sunlight at ground level the only plants are trees. Everything else is paving. The paved lines in the common space point towards the Washington Monument.

Irregular Units There are 94 irregular unit layouts in the building scattered between the sets of regular units. There are a number of locations on each floor that are all irregular, the most common being the corners and the units flanking the stairs.

Window To The City
Academic Work
This is the capstone project from my last semester at the University of Cincinnati. It was a group project with 4 other students and was intended to be submitted to the Timber in the City competition. In addition, we were encouraged to comply with the Living Building Challenge as much as possible in the time we had. I did most of the work in Revit and most of the research on the heavy timber changes to the 2021 IBC and made sure our project met the new code requirements. Fondation Avicenne Renovation
Academic Work
This was my studio project from my foreign exchange program at l’École Spéciale d’Architecture in Paris for the fall semester of 2018. All units are in the metric system. The project was to renovate and expand a 10 story dorm building by Claude Parent that has been largely abandoned for the past decade. The only constraint was to keep the exterior stair and the suspended structure that made the building famous. The project diagrams are below, existing site pictures are on the top right, and various massing iterations are on the bottom right. Trammel Fossil Park Visitor’s Center
Academic Work
Cincinnati is well known in the geological community for the ancient fossils that can be found there. One of the places where these fossils are often found is the Trammel Fossil Park where our assignment was to design a visitor’s center. The images on the bottom left represent the design process. The image on the top left is the edrioasteriod Isorophus cincinnatiensis, a fossil that influenced both the design of the existing display (top right) as well as the concept of my project. Invisible Cities: We were to choose a city from Calvino Italo’s Invisible Cities and draw it. I chose Laudomia; a city of three: the city of the dead, the city of the living, and the city of the unborn, all of which are proportional to the number of people in that area. This drawing took over 23 hours to complete.
Analytique: We went to the Cincinnati Museum of Art and were asked to construct an analytique of the building, adding various components into each other in order to effectively summarize the building in a single image. This drawing took over 21 hours to complete.

Daily Sketches Miscellaneous
We were to do one sketch every day over the course of ten weeks, at the end of which we chose our 5 best sketches to be graded. Some sketches were hand drawn and others were made digitally. Here are some of the better ones. All, except the one on the top right, were hand drawn. Photography Miscellaneous
These pictures were taken at various times for various reasons. Most are from my travels in Europe, but a couple are from a photography class I took at UC in the summer of 2017. I generally think that these are some of the better pictures I’ve taken in the past few years.

Totem Pole Segment Miscellaneous
A little bit of context. Every year, the 5 Order of the Arrow Lodges in Section C-4B (each representing a different Boy Scout council in Ohio and West Virginia) would gather for a Conclave. At each Conclave we would make a totem pole to commemorate the event with each Lodge bringing a section to contribute. At Conclave all the totem pole segments from the 5 Lodges are put together. In 2017 my Lodge, Tecumseh Lodge #65, needed someone to do it, so I designed and built this. This project helped to further develop my abilities with a laser cutter and forced me to adhere to a budget. Project Information: Organization: Tecumseh Lodge, Order of the Arrow Date: Summer 2017

100+1
Miscellaneous The task was to choose 100 ordinary household objects and bind them together with a single item. I chose toy soldiers and string. The idea was to create an American flag out of these soldiers, who are bound together, to symbolize the idea that our country only exists today because of the soldiers throughout our history who gave their lives fighting for the United States. The country is, in this case literally, held together by our fallen soldiers. I took the flag with me to Normandy, France in order to document it in its “ideal location, the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial.
