@deeringbay

A Letter From The President Dear Deering Bay Members, We are entering a very exciting time here at the Club. As many of you know, Fran Roach has been hired as the General Manager of Deering Bay. The Board of Directors is confident in Fran’s leadership abilities and we are very happy to have him here.

Leo Chomiak President Board of Directors

We are fortunate to have Richard Mogensen staying with us for about two months as he assists with the completion of current projects and helps plan future projects around the Club. Again, we want to thank Richard for all he has done for the Club and its membership over the past several months as Interim General Manager.

We are very excited to announce that we have hired a new Director of Food and Beverage, Anacelis Torres, as well as a new Executive Chef, Surelys Figueroa. Both Anacelis and Surelys come to us highly regarded from private clubs and luxury hotels and will make great additions to the Food & Beverage Team here at Deering Bay. The Clubhouse Roof project is progressing very well. As most of you have seen, the roof has been torn off the Main Clubhouse and all the underlayments have been replaced. We are awaiting the delivery of the new S-Tiles to finish off the roof which should be in the next couple of weeks. Next Monday (March 7) through Friday (March 11), the Roofers will be tarring the Clubhouse roof. This will not affect any amenities, but please keep in mind that the tar may give off an odor. Following the Clubhouse Roofing project we will begin the same process on the Security Entrance/Golf Course Maintenance building. We will keep you advised of our schedules. We have just installed 90% of the new Fitness Equipment. We are working on getting a Certificate of Occupancy from the City of Coral Gables and after a few electrical requirements we should be completed by early next week. We will announce the opening date within the next few days. The Junior Center construction has been completed. We are awaiting a few outstanding pieces of equipment to finish up the project and target the facility open. Staff is working on programs and we will have more information for all of you next week to announce the opening and the programs available. The 19th Hole Project Permit is still awaiting the final City of Coral Gables approval. This process has been arduous for over a year now and our team has submitted everything requested by them. We are hopeful to have the Final Permit Approval this week or next, so we can break ground by April 1, 2022. The project unfortunately will not be completed until

A Letter From The President late 2022 now, due to the City requirement delays and supply chain challenges we are all experiencing. In January, the Club fell short of budgeted revenue as a result of rescheduled events due to COVID as well as the delayed opening of the new restaurant. Despite the revenue miss, the Club did an excellent job of controlling expenses as we generated both positive gross operating profit and net income to start the new calendar year. Membership growth continues to be strong, and while the Club experienced the expected attrition that normally comes in January, we are forecasting a strong rebound in the coming months. In other news, some much needed changes are coming to the Driving Range. We are in the process of planning to install taller nets to prevent range balls from flying onto holes surrounding the Driving Range. We will also be installing Covershots to provide shade and protection from rain. Outdoor fans will also be installed to stay cool on hot days. In an effort to provide more space, we will be installing a smaller hitting platform that will be used for private instruction. This first week of March, we had two Trackman machines delivered, which Director of Golf Craig Corcoran and his team are currently making themselves experts on these machines, so stay tuned for the official rollout of the Trackman! Have a great month! Leo Chomiak President

A Letter From The General Manager Dear Members, I am honored and thrilled to be the General Manager here at Deering Bay. I knew this was a special place when I first arrived to the Club on an interim basis back in November, and that holds true with every day I have been here since.

Fran Roach General Manager gm@dbycc.com

I have greatly enjoyed meeting many of you over the past few months, and I am looking forward to getting to know more of you going forward. We have a great team of associates and managers at the Club, and the teamwork I have seen thus far is incredible.

It is an exciting time for many of us here at Deering Bay with plenty of golf events, tennis events, specialty dining and social events coming up this month. The Fitness Center is nearing completion with new equipment recently installed, and as Renny mentions in his letter, we are planning an Open House for members to learn about the new offerings and equipment as soon as possible. We will keep you all updated on dates for the Fitness Center Open House and official opening date. I would like to welcome Deering Bay’s new Director of Food & Beverage, Anacelis Torres and Deering Bay’s new Executive Chef, Surelys Figueroa. Both Anacelis and Surelys have worked in various facets of the hospitality industry and have found that their passions lie within private clubs. Anacelis and Surelys are great additions to the Deering Bay team and I am confident that they will be great leaders of the Food & Beverage Department. As you may have seen, the Board of Directors has revised the mask mandate for Club employees. Vaccinated employees are no longer required to wear masks indoors, but unvaccinated employees must continue to wear masks. Members and guests are not required to wear masks in the Clubhouse. My door is always open and I enjoy listening to any comments and suggestions you may have. The future is bright at Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club! Fran Roach, PGA General Manager

News From Golf Dear Members,

Craig Corcoran Director of Golf c.corcoran@dbycc.com

I am happy to report that our Men’s Member-Guest Invitational was a success! Huge congratulations to Richard Pollack and his guest Peter Gross for stepping into the champions circle after three shootout holes. Thank you to all the members and guests for coming out and participating in the largest Member-Guest Invitational in Deering Bay History! I think everyone would agree with me that the course was in great shape, the weather was perfect and the food throughout the weekend was delightful. Thank you to all the members and staff behind the scenes that make a tournament like this run smoothly.

As we look ahead to March our tournament season continues, highlighting our Women’s Member/Guest on the 31st and the Men’s Spring Member-Member the 24th-27th. Be on the lookout for our Spring Junior program. After a successful winter six week session, Assistant Golf Professional Jonathan Behee is looking to take that momentum into the spring with another Junior Golf Series. An email will be coming out soon with details on the classes and curriculum. Our Trackman Launch Monitors have arrived for the range to help enhance the teaching experience and add data feedback for your warmup. This new technology will be configured and rolled out this month. We will be teaching our staff how to operate the equipment so you can start to utilize it on a daily basis. With Trackman you can now gather information on your swing, distance, spin rate, analysis putting and much more. We look forward to working with you and this new technology to help improve everyone’s game! Thank you, Craig Corcoran Director of Golf

News From The Golf Course Dear Members,

Daniel Stover Director of Golf Course Maintenance d.stover@dbycc.com

The consistency and playability of our bunker sand has been an issue for quite some time. Normally, in order to fix the issue a large crew would have to aggressively rake the bottoms of the bunkers multiple times per week in order to dry and soften the top two inches of sand. As an alternative option because of our crew size, an attachment was ordered last summer for our bunker rake. The attachment finally arrived to us in January and would ideally have worked well in turning the sand over and helping to soften and dry the top layer. The attachment did not work as intended. We have since customized our bunker rake to incorporate fully adjustable threaded rods which work to dig into the sand. We can raise and lower the rods daily as bunkers become too firm or too soft.

Additionally as many of you may have noticed we have adopted the Australian style of raking bunkers. This means we are using lightweight brushes on the face of the bunker while raking the bottoms. This method encourages the golf ball to roll back into the bottom of the bunker rather than plug or hang up in the face. However it should be noted that when a golfer does walk up a bunker face we then have to aggressively rake the face in order to fix the footprints which disrupts the hardening process. As always your feedback is very much appreciated. You can email me at any time at d.stover@dbycc.com Daniel Stover Director of Grounds

News From Food & Beverage Dear Deering Bay Members,

Anacelis Torres Director of Food & Beverage a.torres@dbycc.com

I am so excited to be your new Director of Food and Beverage. As Fran has mentioned in his letter, I have previously worked in various areas of the hospitality industry. Prior to Deering Bay, I had the pleasure of working at private clubs and luxury hotels for several years. The private club industry is a truly unique dimension of hospitality, and it is something that I have become very passionate about. We have a great team here at Deering Bay, and we have already begun planning fun events, exciting specials, and new menu items for you to enjoy.

Beginning this first week of March, we will be hosting weekly specials in the restaurant: Taco Tuesdays, Pasta Night Thursdays, Prime Rib Saturdays, and Sunday Brunch Buffets. Please call reservations at (305) 278-8688 to make a reservation or to place a to-go order! We will be hosting our Member Mixer on Wednesday, March 9th. The Member Mixer is a great opportunity to socialize, enjoy delicious hors d’ouvres courtesy of Executive Chef Surelys Figueroa and Executive Sous Chef Robert Stone, and sip on a 2-for-1 drink! Keep an eye on your email for information regarding this month’s Ladies Night, St. Patrick’s Day Specials, and Discovery Wine Tasting. I look forward to meeting many of you in the dining room or at one of our events. Your feedback is greatly welcomed. Please do not hesitate to contact me at a.torres@dbycc.com with any questions or concerns you may have. Happy March! Anacelis

News From Tennis Dear Deering Bay Members, In keeping with the year’s festivities, March will be a very eventful month. All of our clinics and events are going well and this month will not be different. Tournaments, clinics, and great events all describe our tennis family’s year to date accomplishments and now we have more ahead.

Pedro Leon Director of Tennis p.leon@dbycc.com

In February all clinics, USTA, and SFWDL matches continued as schedule, on the 9th we hoped to host our annual Valentine’s Doubles & Mixed Troubles special event where our members always have a great night of tennis and fun, but unfortunately due to a lot of rain, we had to cancel it.

Now looking forward to our future events on March 12th we will have one of the most important events of the year, the Men’s Member Guest. This is a fun, competitive, and wellorganized tournament where our heavy hitters will duke it out for bragging rights. We would like to mention that this is the first time in many, many years that we have enough players to be able to celebrate this type of event. This is a great sign of all the support that the tennis program is getting from our members and how big we have grown. Besides the all events taking place within our program we also have clinics, private lessons and leagues matches being played both at home and away. Ladies’ clinics: Tuesday & Thursday 9:30 – 11:00am Men’s Clinics: Tuesday 7:00 – 8:00am Kid’s Group lessons: Monday, Wednesday & Friday: 4:00 – 6:00pm Please call or pass by the Tennis Pro-Shop for further information. On behalf of your friends from the Tennis Pro-Shop, have a wonderful month. Pedro Leon Director of Tennis
