Directions to Widener • From Philadelphia: Take I-95 South to I-476 North and MacDade Boulevard. Turn west onto MacDade Boulevard and follow the Widener University sign. After three traffic lights, MacDade Boulevard becomes East 22nd Street. At the fourth traffic light, turn left onto Providence Avenue, Route 320 South, and follow the Widener University sign. Turn left onto East 14th Street into the main entrance. From Western and Northern PA: Follow the PA Turnpike to Exit 331A, I-476. Take I-476 South toward Chester to Exit 1. Turn west onto MacDade Blvd. and follow the Widener Univ. sign. After three traffic lights, MacDade Blvd. becomes East 22nd Street. COACHING STAFF / SCHWARTZ CENTER

Katy Peterson • Head Coach Katy Peterson is in her first year as Widener’s men’s and women’s swimming coach. Peterson arrives after serving as an assistant coach for Florida State University from 2008-11. She led the middle distance freestyle, individual medley and backstroke groups. She was responsible for managing the team’s recruiting databases, coordinating recruiting visits, academic monitoring and coordinating daily practices for assigned members of the men’s and women’s squads. Among the Seminoles accomplishments during her span included 11 participants at the NCAA Championships, 11 swimmers who qualified for the 2012 Olympic Trials, 35 new school records set and 39 swimmers on the Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Team her first two years. Prior to this, Peterson was an assistant coach at the University of Richmond from 2005-08. The Spiders track record during her

Ben Safran

Assistant Coach Ben Safran is in his first season as Widener’s assistant coach. Safran served as an assistant coach at the Central Columbia Aquatic Club in Bloomsburg. He coached children ages 5 to 18 and conducted all practices for the team. He also assisted at the Fanny Chapman Swim Club in Doylestown, teaching sportsmanship, athletic training and the meaning of team sports. Safran competed collegiately at Bloomsburg University and was its team captain as a senior. He also was a member of the school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He developed a student-athlete reading program and managed its use at local elementary schools. He managed a Gym Day to help kids in the area become better people and coordinated fundraising for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Safran also was a senior representative for Bloomsburg’s Honors Program and participated in the NCAA Career in Sports Forum. Safran graduated Bloomsburg in 2011 as its senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He was a four-time member of the Dean’s List, graduating cum laude with a B.S. in Marketing and a minor in Communication Studies.

time included five NCAA qualifiers, 20 new school records set, three Atlantic 10 Conference champions, two Atlantic 10 Conference Championship Performers of the Meet, two Rookies of the Meet and two qualifiers for the 2008 Olympic Trials. Peterson also was the head coach at the Dominion Club in Wyndham, VA, assistant coach for Club Seminole in Tallahassee, FL, the swim clinics director and head instructor at the University of Richmond, a counselor at the University of Virginia Swim Camp and an event coordinator for the Special Olympics of Pennsylvania. Peterson is a native of Lower Moreland, PA and was an All-American at Lower Moreland High School from 1998-2001. She then competed at Virginia Tech, where she was an NCAA provisional qualifier in four separate events. She graduated in 2005 with a B.S. in Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise Science. Peterson also did an internship for the University addressing team nutrition and mentoring cardiac rehabilitation patients.

Sara Coenen

Assistant Coach Sara Coenen is in her first year as an assistant coach for the Pride. She enters after being an assistant swim coach for the Central Bucks Swim Team in Doylestown. She taught and developed swimming techniques and training skills to young swimmers from the junior Olympic to the Senior National levels. Coenen also was an assistant with the Maple Manor Swim Club in Maple Glen, PA, providing competitive swimming instructions and workouts for children ages 5-18. She also was a coach at both the University of Pennsylvania Swim Camp and the Richboro Swim Club. Coenen also has been a volunteer for the South Eastern Pennsylvania Planned Parenthood, the Montgomery County SPCA and the Special Olympics of Bucks County. Coenen was a standout swimmer for Penn, winning a pair of Ivy League championships in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke. Coenen was the team captain in 2009 and 2010, was the team’s Most Valuable Swimmer in 2008 and was a three-time school record holder. Coenen is a Level 1 certified U.S. Swimming Coach. She graduated Penn in 2010 with a degree in Psychology.

meter by 25-yard pool with 10 lanes at Schwartz Center.

The pool in 2008 received a major facelift with

the walls and ceiling painted, our new logo painted twice, new lane lines, new tile walls, regrouting, filtering and a new air handler. New starting blocks, touch pads and a public address system were added in 2009.

A great place to see a meet, Schwartz Center

serves as a great home advantage and several times has hosted the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships.

Schwartz Center also serves as home for our

men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball squads. The facility also is home to our Wellness Center, opened in 2006, and our field house.

Widener has continued its longstanding commitment to leadership by launching the Oskin Leadership Institute on the Main Campus in Chester. The institute will enable Widener undergraduate and graduate students to participate in leadership development activities, experiential learning, and international opportunities focused on developing the character, courage, and competencies to implement positive change throughout the world. In addition, the institute will offer an executive leadership program, providing opportunities for corporate and nonprofit executives to enhance their global leadership skills. Widener serves a wide range of students— from traditional undergraduates to adults returning to complete their degrees to graduate and law students, as well as retirees seeking continuing education programs. The university offers a student-centered experience that helps students balance academics with their daily lives. On the Main Campus, the home base of the university’s 2,747 day undergraduate students, a wide range of extracurricular activities are available. Adult undergraduate (University College) and graduate students receive the flexibility they need to combine their studies with work and family obligations. University College students can take classes on the Main, Delaware, and Exton campuses, and many take courses online. The Main Campus offers graduate courses in all non-law subjects while the Harrisburg Campus offers graduate courses in law, education, nursing, and social work. Law students can choose between the Delaware and Harrisburg Campuses. Many programs offer summer classes, as well as flexibility in pacing and course sequencing. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) on the Exton Campus fulfills both the educational and social needs of adults aged 50 and over.
