COACHING STAFF
Larissa Gillespie • Head Coach In her 12th season as Widener’s field hockey head coach and 18th with the program, Larissa Gillespie has accomplished a great deal at her alma mater. The team has accomplished a lot during her time and the team looks to continue their ascent under her watch. Gillespie owns a 113-76 mark during her time, which includes five straight years with at least 10 victories (2003-07). The Pride in 2006 broke the school record for most victories (13) and advanced to the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Tournament for their first postseason berth. They followed with a 12-5 campaign, playing some of the top teams in the country. September 21, 2006 will go down as an historic night for Gillespie, who notched her 64th victory to become the program’s all-time winningest coach in Widener’s 5-1 triumph over Neumann. Since Gillespie has been with the field hockey program, numerous school records have been established. Beginning in 1999, when she was interim head coach, the team broke or tied 10 school records. The 2001 squad notched its first winning record since 1992 and the 2003 team played in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament for the first of back-to-back years. Under Gillespie’s leadership in 2006, goalkeeper Kate Heritage was picked first team all-region and Jaime Carr was tabbed second team. It marked the first time the team produced all-region players. In addition, 12 players have been named first team all-conference during her time and 21 have been tabbed second team. Gillespie is in her second year on the South Atlantic Regional Field Hockey Selection Committee. She completed her term as chair of the Middle Atlantic Conference’s operations committee in 2009.
Gillespie was a graduate assistant coach for both the field hockey and lacrosse programs during the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 seasons. She also served as women’s lacrosse coach from 2004-06. A standout player on Widener’s field hockey team as an undergraduate, Gillespie was second on the team in scoring during both the 1996 and 1997 seasons. She closed with a then-school-record 16 goals along with seven assists for 39 points. Gillespie also was a two-time honoree on the MAC Academic Honor Roll. Gillespie, in her eighth year as Senior Woman Administrator and sixth as Assistant A.D., received a B.S. in Sport Management from Widener in 1998 and a Master’s of Business Administration in 2000.

Assistant Coaches
Erin Marihugh is in her first year as Widener’s assistant coach. Marihugh previously served as head coach at Newark (DE) High School for two seasons. She also was the Futures National Tournament Coach in 2010 as well as its regional coach from 2006-10. She has run camps at the University of Delaware, University of Maryland and Princeton University. Marihugh competed four years for Delaware at forward, making 22 starts in her career, and also played for the U.S. National Field Hockey Indoor Team. She later competed for Delaware’s club field hockey squad. She teaches Health and Physical Education at Pencader Charter School and has done student teaching at both Carrie Downing Elementary School and George V. Kirk Middle School. Marihugh graduated Delaware in 2010 with a B.S. in Health and Physical Education. Leslie Kelly is in her first year as an assistant coach for the Pride. Kelly was a member of Rutgers’ field hockey team for three seasons. She competed in eight games in 2007, playing just over 550 minutes and totaling 49 saves with a .731 save percentage. Kelly served as the goalkeeper’s coach in 2010 for the Revolution Field Hockey Winter Clinic, the Competitor’s Edge Field Hockey Camp in 2009 and the Rutgers Field Hockey Camp from 2007-08. Kelly was a highly decorated athlete for Glassboro High School in field hockey, softball and track & field. She was tabbed All-Group II in field hockey, leading Glassboro to the 2005 South Jersey Group II crown.

PREVIEW If you are looking to find a successful collegiate athletics program with great student-athletes, coaching and camaraderie, seek no further than Widener’s field hockey team. This squad has a perfect blend of all these components that the squad looks to benefit from again for a memorable 2011. Widener has posted double figures in victories seven of the last eight seasons and eight times under coach Larissa Gillespie, now in her 12th year. Senior Colleen Cormier has been a mainstay at forward for three years and earned some recognition by being picked second team All-Commonwealth Conference. She closed that season seventh in the league with 1.93 points per game and tied for eighth in the conference with 14 goals. Junior Brittany Creighton once again will be a key player at forward after finishing second on the team last season with six goals and third with 12 points. Sophomores Kelly Froio and Devon Biglin also will be getting extended playing time at forward. Senior Kate Fay gave Widener a huge boost last season at midfield, finishing third on the team with four goals, tied for fourth with 10 points and second with two game-winning goals. The West Chester native has been a very reliable player the last two seasons and looks to be even more of a catalyst this year. Katie Ferguson made a huge impression last season as a freshman and hopes to continue this at midfield. Senior Kate Fetterman, junior Emily Norcross, and sophomores Alyssa Pomponio and Lindsay Donovan also hope to be keys at midfield. Olivia Burgese is one of the players Widener will look to on defense with her strong determination and desire to win. Fellow junior Nicole Nardone also has been a solid player on defense the last two seasons and the same will be expected of her this season. Senior Lauren Gehringer as well as sophomores Hannah Dinsmore and Hannah Robinson also look to make an impact on defense. The Pride have five newcomers in sophomore Brittany Gunderson as well as freshmen Kelsey Mouser, Amanda Wozniak, Jessica Sochocky and Maggie Karmeris. The field hockey squad enters its 40th season, the longest of any women’s sport at Widener. The year begins September 1 at home against Immaculata and conference play starts September 23 at Edith R. Dixon Field versus Elizabethtown. The top four teams in the league head to the conference tournament, which is from November 2-5.
