Widener’s volleyball and basketball teams play their home games at Schwartz Center. The facility sports a weight room, swimming pool and classrooms for our student-athletes. The gym in 2007 had extensive renovations with new bleachers and new scoreboards installed. Renovations continued in 2008 with the gym floor resurfaced and the addition of championship banners. Also in Schwartz Center, the women’s locker rooms were remodeled in 2007 and the pool received a massive overhaul in 2008. A new wellness center was constructed adjacent to Schwartz Center and opened in 2006. Our athletics administration has its offices in the third-floor suite.

Donovan Anglin • Head Coach Donovan Anglin is in his eighth season as head women’s volleyball coach and 18th overall with the program. The squad has made great strides over the last three years and has helped the team earn some long overdue respect. The Pride in 2008 notched a schoolrecord 26 wins and a berth in the ECAC South Tournament, its first postseason trip. The squad upended City College of New York at home to earn a berth in the semifinals. The team returned to postseason in 2009, defeating Swarthmore in the ECAC South Tournament quarterfinals as part of a 22-win campaign. Widener that season also upended eventual conference champion Lebanon Valley. Another major notch for Anglin was seeing Rachel Chizmadia and Becky Rohrbaugh in 2007 being named second team CoSIDA Academic All-Americas. The 4.0 students also were tabbed co-valedictorians. Anglin served as an assistant from 1994-2003 and was named coach prior to the 2004 campaign. A 1993 graduate of Widener University with a B.A. in Communication Studies, Anglin served as head coach for the men’s club volleyball team during the 1999 and 2000 seasons. He also was a member of the club team for one season and coach of the Synergy Volleyball Club 17-team for six years. PREVIEW Widener’s volleyball team in 2011 enters full of promise as plenty of talented student-athletes once again are ready to hit the court. The team has provided lots of reasons for optimism over the last few years and the squad looks to take another step toward its first Commonwealth Conference title. The catalyst for this unit is senior Jamie Ballew, who already is among the elite setters in Widener and league history. A tremendous asset no matter what the situation, the Media native gives the Pride many facets from her exceptional setting, her strong blocking, her great serving and solid defense. It is rare a setter can provide so much, but Ballew does and has been duly rewarded in being tabbed first team all-conference in 2009 as well as second team in 2008 and 2010. The 2008 conference rookie of the year ended 2010 fourth in the league with 8.65 assists per set, second on the team with 403 digs, third with 52 total blocks and fourth with 31 service aces. Senior Nicole Merton has been a strong player at the net for three years and 2011 should provide more of the same. A key to the team’s success this season, Merton last year was third on the team with 228 kills and posted a .380 hitting percentage or higher in five matches. Alectra Edison is another player who looks for a strong fourth year for the Pride. A powerful ball striker who the squad will expect big things from this year as well as some long-overdue recognition from the conference, the Lancaster, CA product was fourth on the team last season with 222 kills. Junior Angela DiMaria also gives Widener some major punch at outside hitter. A reliable competitor who gives the Pride a great deal of strong play both on offense and defense, she was ninth in the conference with 2.47 kills per set, led the team with 302 kills, closed third on the squad with 32 service aces and fourth with 323 digs. Junior Meghan Spence has been a mainstay at libero for three years and looks to continue her strong play this season. She ended 2010 second in the conference with 5.58 digs per set, seventh with 0.40 service aces per set, and led the team with 697 digs and 49 service aces. Shauna Phillips gives the team solid play at middle hitter. She finished second on the squad in her sophomore season with 74 total blocks and fifth with 191 kills. Senior Brieann Katzianer as well as sophomores Stephanie Schutt, Veronica Vizzard and Maggie Greenberg also hope to be key contributors this season. The Pride welcome five newcomers in Caitlin Horan, Victoria Miller, Brittney Johnsen, Jessica Dembeck and Kaitlyn Schnalzer. Widener begins its season September 1 against Cabrini and Richard Stockton in one of its two home tri-matches. League play opens September 14 at home against Arcadia and ends October 26 at Schwartz Center against reigning league champion Lebanon Valley. The top four teams qualify for the conference tournament, which is from November 2-5.
