COACHING STAFF

Chris Carideo • Head Coach Chris Carideo has built a great reputation for himself as a player and a coach for Widener. His desire to see Widener among the nation’s elite has placed the team among the upper echelon with bigger and better things on the horizon. Carideo’s run has seen him become the only Widener coach in any sport to lead his program to the NCAA Tournament in his first three years. The Pride followed their 15-13 record in 2006-07 with a 23-6 mark in 2007-08 and a second consecutive Commonwealth Conference title. The third straight crown in 200809 saw the Pride again win the league with a 23-6 record and host an NCAA Tournament game for the first time in eight years. The Pride last season witnessed Perry Wright named an AllAmerica as well the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year and Jack Brennan was named second team all-league the last two seasons. Over six seasons, he owns an 105-58 record at Widener and already is the third winningest coach in school history. In the summer of 2010, Carideo was the head coach for a group of Division II and III players from around the country that took part in a tour to play games against professional competition in Europe. He went on a return trip to Europe in 2011 taking with him three of Widener’s players. One of the most decorated athletes in Widener University history, Carideo is just the program’s third coach in the last 47 years. He entered after five successful seasons as head coach of the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY. Second on the Academy’s wins list with an 86-51 mark, Carideo helped guide the Mariners to NCAA Tournament appearances in 2002 and 2003, including a trip to the second round in 2003. USMMA won the Skyline Conference regular season and tournament championships in 2002 and 2003, with the first championship earning Carideo Coach-of-the-Year honors. The Ocean City, NJ native averaged more than 17 victories per season for a team which ranked fifth nationally in rebounding margin in 2004. Also at USMMA, he was an assistant to the associate athletics

director, a P.E. instructor, a minority recruiter for the Academy and helped coordinate camps and clinics. As an assistant coach at USMMA in 2000-01, he helped the team to a 22-8 mark and the school’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament “Sweet 16.” He also was an assistant at Widener in 1995-96 and again from 1998-2000, a part of the 2000 Middle Atlantic Conference championship team. Carideo began coaching after one of the most storied athletic careers in school annals from 1991-95, capped with an All-America campaign his senior season. He became the eighth player in the program’s history so honored after being named first team All-MAC all four seasons. He graduated after hitting 402 three-pointers, then an NCAA Division III record and now third best, and still holds the nation’s top mark by hitting a 3-pointer in 75 straight games. Carideo is second in school history with 2,067 points, fourth with 699 baskets and owns the top four single-season marks in 3-pointers made and attempted. His All-America campaign witnessed him score 616 points for the second best mark in school history and net 113 three-pointers (first). This helped Widener finish 18-9 and advance to the NCAA Tournament. This played a huge part in him being inducted into the Philadelphia Small College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012. Carideo in 1991-92 led the country by shooting 95.5 percent from the line. After graduating in 1996 with a B.A. in Psychology and Secondary Education, Carideo played one season professionally for the Trenton Flames of the International Basketball League.

Bill Leahy Assistant Coach

Bill Leahy is in his sixth season as an assistant coach for the Pride. Over his first five seasons, Widener owns a 90-45 record with two Commonwealth Conference Championships. In the summer of 2010, Leahy enjoyed the unique experience of serving as the co-coach for a group of Division II and III players from around the country that took part in a tour to play games against professional competition in Europe. He coordinated and assembled the team with head coach Chris Carideo. The team traveled to Belgium, Germany, Netherlands and Great Britain. Leahy came to Widener after one year as an assistant at Cabrini, his alma mater. As an undergraduate, Leahy earned a finance degree from Cabrini and played varsity basketball for coach John Dzik, the school’s alltime leader in coaching victories. As a player, he helped the Cavaliers win the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament. He also was named to the PAC Academic Honor Roll. He and his wife Alicia make their home in Ardmore.

JJ Rapczynski Assistant Coach

JJ Rapczynski is in his first season as an assistant coach for the Pride. Rapczynski competed for Ursinus and was a two-year captain. He also helped in the Bears’ sports information department as a student assistant. Also at Ursinus, he volunteered with the Special Olympics, with the Mercy Hospice and was a fundraiser for Best Buddies. Rapczynski graduated Ursinus in 2012, majoring in Media and Communication Studies with a minor in Management.

PREVIEW While the expectations always remain high for Widener’s men’s basketball team, the team will have a new look as its top four starters from last season departed. The Pride are hoping the squad’s 18-8 finish from a season ago will provide plenty of momentum as the team looks for another charge this year. Widener last season hosted a conference tournament game for the first time since 2009 and one of the main reasons was senior Rob McPherson. The only returnee who started all 26 games last season, the Bowie, MD native averaged 8.9 points per contest and had several big games, including 22 points and seven rebounds vs. eventual NCAA runner-up Cabrini. Senior Adam Ahern also expects to see his playing time go up with the graduation of Jack Brennan. Ahern’s 6’7” frame will prove crucial and he certainly should see his playing time go up. Junior Rodney Brown is another player who will be counted on. The six-foot forward saw action in 14 contests last season and should get more playing time. Junior Bob Makor played in all 26 contests last season at forward and despite just 18.0 minutes per game, he proved to be a valuable player and hopes to continue that this season. Connor Dean is another junior forward who will seek to be more of a factor. Sophomore Greg Lawson competed in 14 contests last season and also hopes for more time.

Junior Andrew Radomicki shook off an early-season injury to play a key role at point guard. He should see more than the 11 starts he got last season and continue improving as a player. Sophomore Dillon Fields gave Widener key minutes in starting 13 contests last season and also should play a key role this year. Sophomore Ryan Abel also seeks more playing time this season. Widener welcomes 11 newcomers in Mark Pryzbylkowski, David Nicholson, Darren Fitzpatrick, Glenn Hefter, Kieran Bolger, Ben Goss, Mark Dunn, Lamine Cooper, Jacob Gurkin, Logan Murray and Rasheed Hines. Widener again plays another challenging schedule that begins November 16 against Wesley at the Widener Tip-Off for Autism Awareness and continues the next day against either Delaware Valley or Skidmore. A major challenge comes in the third game as the Pride battle Cabrini during the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament in Aston, PA. The Pride will make a stop in New York City from December 29-30 against NYU and Wentworth. Widener begins Commonwealth Conference play at home November 28 against Elizabethtown and closes it February 16 at home vs. Arcadia. The top five teams in the league compete in the conference tournament from February 18-23.

WIDENER PRIDE

SUPPORT / C. ALAN ROWE LOCKER ROOM The athletic training staff is located in the Wellness Center, which opened in the spring of 2006. The staff is responsible for the conditioning and rehabilitation of over 500 Widener University’s student-athletes representing 20 sports. The staff consists of two full-time athletic trainers as well as several graduate and athletic training student interns. The athletic trainers have at their disposal a bevy of equipment ranging from separate MD exam rooms, two walk-in whirlpools with one cold plunge and one warm, up-to-date electromodalities and rehabilitation equipment. The department is headed by A.J. Duffy, in his 23rd year in this capacity at Widener and 31st in collegiate athletics. Duffy is primarily responsible for the football and men’s lacrosse teams as well as overseeing the entire athletic training staff. He also teaches athletic training classes at Widener and Temple University. He has been very active in the profession, serving various elected offices since 1993. Among those areas include President of the Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association and the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers’ Society. Duffy also has given A.J. Duffy III talks on both the regional and national level. Duffy has been cited as the 2002 Interboro Education Association Volunteer of the Year, the 2002 NATA Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer, the 2003 EATA Cramer Award Athletic Trainer winner, the 2005 Philadelphia Sports Medicine Congress Ted Quedenfeld Award recipient, the 2007 Donald 610-499-4445 Grover Award winner by the ECAC and the 2011 Division III Athletic Trainer of the Year. Prior to arriving at Widener, Duffy was an assistant athletic trainer at the University of Michigan from 1984-90 and an assistant at Temple University from 1981-83. He earned his B.S. from the University of Michigan in 1980, his M.S. from the University of Arizona in 1981 and his Physical Therapy Certificate from Drexel University (Hahnemann) in 1984. Duffy and his wife, Monica, a Widener graduate in Nursing, reside in Norwood, PA with their sons, Joseph, 23, and Connor, 21. Cassandra Benitez is in her second year as Widener’s assistant athletic trainer. Benitez arrived after one year as the assistant athletic trainer at Virginia State University. She worked with a bevy of teams and approximately 300 student-athletes, helping evaluate and prevent all injuries in addition to revamping the school’s concussion protocol. She also worked with the soccer teams and the baseball squad at Virginia Commonwealth University in addition to the field hockey and football teams at the University of Richmond. Benitez also has assisted at Deep Run High School and with the Special Olympics of Virginia in track & field. Benitez graduated from Columbus State University in 2006 with a B.S. in Exercise Science. She received her M.S. in Athletic Training from Virginia Commonwealth in 2010. The equipment staff is located primarily on the lower level of Schwartz Athletic Center. The football and men’s lacrosse teams have their equipment room located at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium. The staff is comprised of two full-time managers as well as a plethora of student workers. The staff has played a major role in providing upgraded locker rooms at both Schwartz Center and Quick Stadium as well as maintaining the equipment rooms to meet the needs of Widener’s student-athletes. Charlie Evans is in his fifth year and Nader Kawash is in his second year. Evans, the equipment room director, entered after eight years at West Chester University, serving as the lone support for the department’s 23 teams. His tenure from 2000-08 had him oversee mostly Division II teams and some Division I. This came after he was the equipment manager at Franklin & Marshall College from 1989-99. He was the primary contact for the department’s 26 varsity sports. Evans has been a certified member of the Athletic Equipment Managers Association since 1994. Kawash entered after serving three years as an assistant equipment manager for Kent State. He also had worked for the University of Southern California, the University of Virginia, the Tennessee Titans, Temple University, the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles.

C. Alan Rowe Locker Room Widener’s men’s basketball locker room in 2008 was renamed the “C. Alan Rowe Locker Room.” The change comes in honor of the legendary coach, who roamed the sidelines for 33 seasons in leading the squad to 536 victories and two Final Four appearances. The locker room features plenty of amenities with new carpeting, lockers, chairs and a flat-screen television. It is located on the first floor of Schwartz Center, which has been Widener’s home since 1971.

Widener plays its home games at Schwartz Center, which was built in 1971 and sports a weight room, swimming pool and classrooms for our student-athletes. Renovations have included new scoreboards and bleachers.

HISTORY Celebrating over a century of existence, Widener University’s men’s basketball program has taken its rightful place as one of the nation’s preeminent squads. Boasting over 1,000 victories, nine All-Americas and two Final Four appearances, the program has helped several players to be drafted by the NBA and launch the coaching careers of others. The most recognizable face of Widener basketball, C. Alan Rowe helped put the school on the map during his 33-year tenure as coach (1965-98). The winningest coach in school history in any sport, Rowe amassed a 536-324 record during a span which he guided eight All-Americas. He helped mold a team to two Final Four trips, three Mid-Atlantic Regional titles in the NCAA Tournament and twice ranked as high as second in the nation. Wally Rice, the program’s first All-America, helped then Pennsylvania Military College with the building blocks for what would become a power. He led the Pioneers in 1972 to the school’s first NCAA Tournament berth in what was then known as the College Division before being drafted that year by the Boston Celtics. The arrival of Dennis James in 1974 marked the beginning of the program’s most prolific four-year run. The future Philadelphia 76ers draftee from unheralded Southern High School helped the team to an 87-29 record, the best over a four-year period, and in the process became the program’s first two-time All-America (1977, 1978). The Pioneers made the NCAA Tournament all four of James’ years, including a magical run to the 1978 NCAA final that included a third straight Middle Atlantic Conference Southern Division title and a 21-game winning streak. A home victory against Kean secured the team’s first Final Four appearance and Widener upended Stony Brook in the semifinals before bowing to North Park in the title game. Mark Tucker, who would be named All-America in 1979, played a key role on a squad that was assisted by present Saint Joseph’s coach and 1976 Widener alum Phil Martelli. Lou DeRogatis, the program’s most recent two-time All-America, led a new charge that produced NCAA Tournament appearances in 1982 and 1983. Leon Jones was tabbed AllAmerica in 1984 and Bob Guaglionie earned the same honor the following year. The 1984-85 season not only produced the school’s second Final Four trip, but it announced the arrival of Lou Stevens as one of the school’s most dynamic players. Stevens was named to the all-tournament team during a run in which Widener topped Lycoming, Scranton and WPI en route to the semifinals. Stevens graduated as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,140 points and in 1988 was tabbed All-America as well as the Division III Player of the Year. Stevens also was named MVP of the Mid-Atlantic Regional in 1985 and 1987. The 1994-95 campaign brought the Pioneers back into the NCAA Tournament following an eight-year hiatus and it also was the final year for present head coach Chris Carideo. Named All-America after being picked first team All-MAC four times, he graduated with a then NCAA record 402 three-pointers and a 75-game streak with at least one 3-pointer. He is second in school history with 2,067 points and fourth with 699 baskets. Widener went through its longest drought without an All-America at 11 years before Kris Clarkson helped Widener get back into the national spotlight. The Overbrook HS product arrived in 2002 with Division III talent and graduated with Division I explosiveness. His dominant presence in the paint helped him score 590 points his senior season and be named first team All-America as well as Mid-Atlantic Region Player of the Year. The 2005-06 squad notched the school’s first 20-win season in five years and clinched its first berth in the “Sweet 16” since 1987. The Pioneers held off Catholic in the first round before a stunning 71-69 victory at ninth-ranked York (PA) in the second round. The 2006-07 season produced back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances for the second time in the last 24 years. The run to the show was even more incredible as the newly named Pride won two road games to clinch their first Commonwealth Conference title since 2001. Senior Essien Ford was the hero in both conference tournament tilts. His tying 3-pointer with 9.4 seconds left in regulation propelled Widener to a 91-84 double-overtime semifinal win at Messiah. The Pride in the final at Juniata again rallied from a 14-point deficit and Ford provided the drama, nailing a 3-pointer at the buzzer in a thrilling 63-60 victory. The 2007-08 team did something no other Widener squad ever did, win an NCAA Tournament game in three consecutive years. The Pride rolled to a 23-6 record and, just like in 2007, won two road games in the conference tournament. Widener avenged two regular-season losses against Albright by winning in the semifinals before a victory at Lycoming for the title. A fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament berth and third straight league title were achieved in 2008-09, thanks in large part to All-America and conference Player of the Year Charles Jones. The Pride notched their first home NCAA Tournament win in 12 years in addition to a schoolrecord four straight seasons with a victory in the big dance. Perry Wright became the program’s 11th different player to be named All-American as he also was tabbed 2012 Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year. It marked the third time in seven years Widener had a player named an All-American.
