COACHING STAFF

Larissa Gillespie • Head Coach In her 13th season as Widener’s field hockey head coach and 19th with the program, Larissa Gillespie has accomplished a great deal at her alma mater. The team has made great strides during her time and the team looks to continue their ascent under her watch. Gillespie owns a 121-84 mark during her time, which includes five straight years with at least 10 victories (2003-07). The Pride in 2006 broke the school record for most victories (13) and advanced to the ECAC MidAtlantic Tournament for their first postseason berth. They followed with a 12-5 campaign, playing some of the nation’s top teams. September 21, 2006 will go down as an historic night for Gillespie, who notched her 64th victory to become the program’s all-time winningest coach in Widener’s 5-1 triumph over Neumann. Since Gillespie has been with the field hockey program, numerous school records have been established. Beginning in 1999, when she was interim head coach, the team broke or tied 10 school records. The 2001 squad notched its first winning record since 1992 and the 2003 team played in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament for the first of back-to-back years. Under Gillespie’s leadership in 2006, goalkeeper Kate Heritage was picked first team all-region and Jaime Carr was tabbed second team. It marked the first time the team produced all-region players. In addition, 12 players have been named first team all-conference during her time and 23 have been tabbed second team. Gillespie is in her third year on the South Atlantic Regional Field Hockey Selection Committee. She completed her term as chair of the Middle Atlantic Conference’s operations committee in 2009. Also during Gillespie’s time, Widener has had at least one studentathlete on the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Teams all seven years of the ballot’s existence. The Pride also have been presented a National Academic Team Award by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) the last four years.

Gillespie was a graduate assistant coach for both the field hockey and lacrosse programs during the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 seasons. She also served as women’s lacrosse coach from 2004-06. A standout player on Widener’s field hockey team as an undergraduate, Gillespie was second on the team in scoring during both the 1996 and 1997 seasons. She closed with a then-school-record 16 goals along with seven assists for 39 points. Gillespie also was a two-time honoree on the MAC Academic Honor Roll. Gillespie last June was one of 126 who received an all-expenses paid trip to the NCAA Women Coaches Academy. The convention is run by the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics (CWA), which started in 2002 and is designed to support an initiative to train and retain women coaches. Gillespie, in her ninth year as Senior Woman Administrator and seventh as Assistant A.D., received a B.S. in Sport Management from Widener in 1998 and a Master’s of Business Administration in 2000.

She was tabbed All-Group II in field hockey, leading Glassboro to the 2005 South Jersey Group II crown.

She also was a goalkeeping consultant at Lebanon Valley from 2003-2007, an assistant at Princeton in 2003 and worked with the USFHA Future’s Program from 1998-2009. PREVIEW Widener’s field hockey team has enjoyed an amazing run the last 13 years, winning at least eight games 12 times and at least 10 games on eight occasions. A bevy of quality players are back in the fold as the Pride look to claim their first Commonwealth Conference title. Two players who have solidified the defense and are worthy of their all-conference nods from last year are Nicole Nardone and Olivia Burgese (pictured). The secondteam picks have been a force in the back and their play helped Widener record four shutouts last season. Nardone has seven goals and seven defensive saves with Burgese getting two goals and four defensive saves. Juniors Hannah Robinson and Hannah Dinsmore also are back on defense. Senior Emily Norcross gave the midfield a huge boost last season, closing third on the squad with six goals. Juniors Katie Ferguson and Lindsay Donovan return to also help the midfield. Junior Devon Biglin and senior Brittany Creighton return in hopes of continuing their impressive play at forward. Biglin totaled three goals and seven points last season with Creighton getting two and six. Junior Brittany Gunderson also looks to give the frontline a spark and junior Samantha Balonis returns to the squad after totaling 13 points in 2010. The Pride welcome six newcomers in sophomore Mackenzie Lindquist, and freshmen Gwendolynne Davis, Jessica McCallister, Meghan Garvey, Ashley Aires and Rebecca Doran. Widener opens its season August 31 at Immaculata and the home opener is September 6 against Gwynedd-Mercy. League plays begins September 22 at Stevenson and Homecoming is October 6 versus Alvernia. The regular season ends October 27 at Goucher. The league’s top five teams compete in the conference tournament October 29-November 3.
