COACHING STAFF

Brent Jacquette • Head Coach Widener men’s soccer coach Brent Jacquette, in his fourth year, looks to make sure the team stays the course in search of its first Commonwealth Conference title. The talent is in place as he hopes to attain this goal. Jacquette took over after serving two seasons as an assistant. The 2008 campaign was a magical one as the Pride upset top-seeded Lebanon Valley in the conference semifinals and competed in the ECAC South Tournament. The nine victories were the most since the 2004 squad picked up 10. The Wallingford, PA native competed in the United Soccer Leagues with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in 2003 and the Minnesota Thunder in 2004. Jacquette holds a USSF “A” License and an NSCAA Premier Diploma. He also is an NSCAA Associate Staff Coach.

Jacquette also enjoyed a successful collegiate playing career, being named All-America and two-time All-Big Ten Conference defender at Penn State. He was tabbed a Collegiate MVP by Soccer America in 2002 and was selected to participate in the Major League Soccer combine in 2003. He was a four-year starter and a captain, graduating in fewer than four years with a B.A. in Telecommunications in December 2002. Jacquette’s wealth of experience also includes training with FC St. Pauli in Germany. He founded Get Ahead Soccer, which developed youth soccer programs, camps and clinics, and organized the staff to conduct training sessions. Jacquette also was a co-director of sports operations at Tri State Sports, helping develop a marketing plan for youth leagues and overseeing scheduling, staffing and billing of the complex. He also worked as a region manager at Time Warner, overseeing magazine sales in five states.

Assistant Coaches Jesse Zafiratos is in his second season as an assistant coach for Widener. His main responsibilities include recruiting and working primarily with the forwards. Zafiratos is a 2002 Interboro High School graduate where he was a three-time All-Del Val Conference selection and an All-Area Selection by the Philadelphia Inquirer. After his senior year he was chosen to participate in the all city-suburban game, as well as the F.C. Delco College Night game. He played collegiately at La Roche College, where he led the team in points per game in 2004 that included a five-game consecutive goal scoring streak. In 2006 as a senior, he was named team captain and led the squad in assists. He has coached at the club level with the Beadling Soccer Club, along with West Chester United, Hotspurs, and the Lansdowne Soccer Club. Zafiratos resides in Lansdowne.

Matt Poole is in his second year as an assistant coach for Widener. Poole in 2010 was a volunteer assistant coach at Drexel. He also has coached youth teams in Nether Providence and has his NSCAA national diploma. Poole was a four-year player at Virginia, starting 78 of the 83 games he played in. He helped the Cavaliers reach the national semifinals in 2006 and was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Tournament Team in 2008. He also was named first team all-state by the Virginia Sports Information Directors and participated in the 2009 Major League Soccer Combine. Zach Weimar is in his first year as an assistant coach for Widener. Weimar served as an assistant coach at Marple Newtown High School from 2010-11 and has been on the EPYSA ODP staff since 2011. He competed four years at Swarthmore and was named team captain in 2008 and 2009. Weimar holds a USSF “D” license.

Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium, home of Widener’s football team since 1994, is in its eighth year as home of our men’s and women’s soccer programs. The move was made following the installment of a new FieldTurf surface in 2005. The stadium also had a new scoreboard installed and the locker rooms were refurbished that year. Seating for over 4,000 spectators is available. The stadium also serves as home for Widener’s conference championship men’s lacrosse and track & field squads.

PREVIEW Widener’s men’s soccer team has plenty to look forward to as it embarks on the 2012 campaign. Seven starters are back looking to make an impact as the Pride continue to take strides toward competing for a Commonwealth Conference title. The defense remains solid with the return of seniors Kevin Martin and Joe Brydges. These two helped Widener record three shutouts a season ago and look to once again be a force in the back. Not to be forgotten on the back line is junior Cody Schulte, one of only five for the Pride last season to compete in all 18 matches. He is a determined player who has given the team a huge boost and will be counted on in a big way this season. Junior Matt Montera and Derek Brubaker along with sophomores Troy Czapor and Sumo Yarkpawolo also look for time on defense. The midfield gets a huge boost from senior DJ DiPaola, who paced last year’s team in points and has been one of the major reasons for the team’s upswing. The second team all-conference pick from 2010 looks to see his point total go even higher as he continues to get extended playing time. Senior Drew Hilinski also is a major factor at midfield and will look to contribute even more this season. Junior Emmette Kemokai and sophomore Niko Karolidis also seek to contribute at midfield. Junior Matt Parrotta is a key player at forward and looks to provide some key punch this season. Junior Jakub Valdner is the lone returning goalkeeper and looks to make a stand after getting 11 starts in 2010. The Pride welcome 15 newcomers in Jonathan Rouse, Grant Shaffer, Alec DelConte, Zac Furia, Tori Remondelli, Ross Staudt, Jeff Hippauf, Kyle Lynch, Louis Cumberland, Steve Yarosh, Malik Krcic, Eric Taylor, Eric Bihlear, Max Spencer anc Chad Pohlig.
