COACHING STAFF

Katy Peterson • Head Coach Katy Peterson has done more than build an impressive resume in her first two seasons as Widener’s swimming coach. Even with a three-time All-America and numerous individual conference champions under her belt, she still hopes for bigger and better things to come in the future. Her second season was an incredible one for the Pride as the women’s team closed second at the MAC Championships. That team saw Laura Harris become a three-time All-America, just the sixth female in school history to be a multiple All-America and Widener’s first women’s swimming All-America in a decade. Peterson’s arrival witnessed the women’s team finishing second and the men closing third at the 2012 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships. Her expertise played a big role in Harris qualifying for the NCAA Championships in three events. Peterson joined the team after serving as an assistant coach for Florida State University from 2008-11. She led the middle distance freestyle, individual medley and backstroke groups. She was responsible for managing the team’s recruiting databases, coordinating recruiting visits, academic monitoring and coordinating daily practices for assigned members of the men’s and women’s squads.

Among the Seminoles accomplishments during her span included 11 participants at the NCAA Championships, 11 swimmers who qualified for the 2012 Olympic Trials, 35 new school records set and 39 swimmers on the Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Team her first two years. Prior to this, Peterson was an assistant coach at the University of Richmond from 2005-08. The Spiders track record during her time included five NCAA qualifiers, 20 new school records, three Atlantic 10 Conference champions, two Atlantic 10 Conference Championship Performers of the Meet, two Rookies of the Meet and two qualifiers for the 2008 Olympic Trials. Peterson also was the head coach at the Dominion Club in Wyndham, VA, assistant coach for Club Seminole in Tallahassee, FL, the swim clinics director and head instructor at the University of Richmond, a counselor at the University of Virginia Swim Camp and an event coordinator for the Special Olympics of Pennsylvania. Peterson is a native of Lower Moreland, PA and was an All-American at Lower Moreland High School from 1998-2001. She then competed at Virginia Tech, where she was an NCAA provisional qualifier in four separate events. She graduated in 2005 with a B.S. in Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise Science. Peterson also did an internship for the University addressing team nutrition and mentoring cardiac rehabilitation patients.

Ben Safran

Michael Dougherty

Assistant Coach Ben Safran is in his second season as Widener’s assistant coach. Safran served as an assistant coach at the Central Columbia Aquatic Club in Bloomsburg. He coached children ages 5 to 18 and conducted all practices for the team. He also assisted at the Fanny Chapman Swim Club in Doylestown, teaching sportsmanship, athletic training and the meaning of team sports. Safran competed collegiately at Bloomsburg University and was its team captain as a senior. He also was a member of the school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He developed a student-athlete reading program and managed its use at local elementary schools. He managed a Gym Day to help kids in the area become better people and coordinated fundraising for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Safran also was a senior representative for Bloomsburg’s Honors Program and participated in the NCAA Career in Sports Forum. Safran graduated Bloomsburg in 2011 as its senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He was a four-time member of the Dean’s List, graduating cum laude with a B.S. in Marketing and a minor in Communication Studies.

Assistant Coach

Michael Dougherty is in his first

season as an assistant swimming coach at Widener. Dougherty competed for four years at Misericordia University, where he set two school records in the 200-yard backstroke and the 800-yard freestyle relay. In 2011, Dougherty returned to his former high school to serve as assistant coach for the Stroudsburg High School Mountaineers. After one season, he was promoted to head coach of Stroudsburg and proceeded to lead the school to its 11th straight conference title. Dougherty also worked at Elevations Health Club as a triathlon fitness trainer and swim instructor. Dougherty graduated from Misericordia in 2011 with a degree in History and English.
