Alisa Kintner • Head Coach Alisa (DiBonaventura) Kintner enjoyed a great run last season in her 10th year as Widener’s women’s basketball team and hopes year 11 provides more of the same. WIDENER PRIDE

PREVIEW Coming off an unprecedented season by anyone’s standards, it would be a lot to ask of the 2013-14 Widener women’s basketball team to duplicate its success from the 2012-13 campaign. But that will be the goal as the program brings back 12 returnees in its attempt of another magical run. The 41st season of women’s basketball on campus saw the Pride advanced to the “Elite Eight” of the NCAA Tournament, break the school record for most overall and conference victories (24-6, 16-2 CC), host a league tournament game for the first time since 1983 and close as high as 12th in the country according to the final D3Hoops. com Top 25 Poll. Junior Ally Ferrucci, the squad’s lone returning starter, has done more than an admirable job at point guard and should continue to solidify the backcourt. Among her many standout games last year, she closed third in the conference with 4.0 assists per game, fifth with a .709 free throw percentage and fifth with a 1.2 assist-to-turnover ratio. Senior Jen Egee finally got her just due last season in being tabbed second team all-league. A standout guard who has range almost anywhere on the court, the Ridley product canned 68 three-pointers to set a new school record and is Widener’s career leader with 160. Senior Joanna Persiano made her mark last season with immense drawn charges in the first round of the NCAA Tournament vs. FDU-Florham and the second round at No. 9 Catholic. An intense competitor with many facets to her game, she would like to get her

scoring back to the level of her sophomore campaign when she averaged 10.7 points per game. Junior Kristina Reiter also will get more playing time this season in the backcourt. Primarily a reserve last season, she will vie for the starting nod thanks to her great shooting and tremendous all-around play. Juniors Raven Jones, Paige Davis and Aleia Glick along with sophomore Nikki Sutliff also will see time this season at guard. Junior Courtney Colella now becomes an even bigger option this season in the paint with the graduation losses. She did a lot thanks to her great touch and high shooting percentage, but will have a greater role in the post this year. Junior Caitlin Horan, a three-year competitor on the volleyball team, and sophomores Brianna Wylie and Sarah Engman also will be factors this season in the post. The Pride welcome five newcomers in Leilani Beckham, Jenna Jackson, Aly Furgiuele, Kara Campbell and Bri Kennedy. Widener opens its season November 15 against Hollins at the Days Inn Tip-Off Tournament. The squad also will make a journey to Puerto Rico to face Albion on December 18 and Mary Washington the next day. League plays begins November 26 at home against Albright and ends February 22 at Arcadia. The top five teams compete in the conference tournament from February 24-March 1.

NCAA TOURNAMENT TEAMS The 1982 team made history as Widener’s first women’s squad to compete in the NCAA Tournament. Coached by Gigi Hagan, the Pioneers amassed a school-best 19-7 record, won the second of two straight division titles and were paced by a lethal duo. Maureen McGinn capped her career by being named Middle Atlantic Conference Southern Division MVP a second straight year and all-league a fourth time. Averaging over 20 points per game in 1981-82, McGinn left as the school’s leading scorer with 1,935 points. Annette Angelotti, a three-time all-conference honoree, averaged over 16 points per contest that season. She graduated in 1983 as the school’s second leading scorer with 1,568 points. The 2004 squad relied on a dependable starting lineup to carry the school to another NCAA Tournament berth. The squad recorded an 18-10 record, a seven-game winning streak in mid-season and a memorable run through the Commonwealth Conference Tournament. Nikki Carden finished her three-year career by being named first team all-conference and honorable mention All-ECAC. She averaged 13.7 points that season and nailed a school-record 56 three-pointers. Nicole Stanley, who started every game, was tabbed second team all-league by scoring 10.1 points and dishing 2.3 assists. Chelsea Luhta poured in a team-best 14.1 points per contest and grabbed 7.0 rebounds per game. She graduated in 2006 as the school’s second leading scorer with 1,679 points. Erin Nemshick paced the squad with 9.8 rebounds per game, including an astounding 3.8 offensive rebounds, and also made 28 starts. Kate Smyth netted 7.5 points per game and closed second on the team with 2.6 assists. Widener’s run in the conference tournament began at Messiah, which entered unblemished in 14 league games. That mark would change thanks to Carden’s 31 points and Luhta’s 18 in a 69-64 triumph. The Falcons were held to just 26 percent shooting in the second half. The final at Moravian saw Widener erase a 15-point halftime deficit for a 71-68 victory. The Pioneers in the second half shot 53 percent from the floor, held the Greyhounds to 22 percent and outscored them, 46-28. Carden scored Widener’s last eight points, including the go-ahead 3pointer with 21 seconds left for a 70-68 cushion. She hit 1-of-2 from the line with eight seconds remaining for the final margin. Carden ended with 16 points, including 13 points and three 3-pointers in the second half. Luhta netted 15 points, Nemshick had 14 and 12 rebounds, and Stanley poured in 13 points. The calendar in 2009 did not read 2004, but it might as well have. The Pride again finished with an 18-10 record as the fourth seed, beat nationally ranked Messiah in the league semifinals on February 25 and won at the No. 2 seed (Lebanon Valley) in the final three days later. It was the crowning achievement for Beth Dessart Mager, a four-year player who displayed as much passion for the game not seen in a while for Widener. She was tabbed conference tournament MVP after finishing with 34 points and 15 rebounds in two games, playing all 90 minutes. Barbara Fleming was picked first team all-league by scoring over 13 points per game and Casey Pritz was tabbed the league’s Rookie of the Year, finishing with nine double-doubles. Lindsey Isler and Becky Tyler also were valuable members of the squad and rounded out a strong starting lineup. Widener kicked it into gear with a critical January 28 win at Lebanon Valley, beginning a stretch in which it won five of its next six league games. A 60-57 victory at Messiah in the semifinals snapped the team’s 10-game skid against the national power and had Widener again on the verge of history. Dessart Mager closed with 19 points, hitting the go-ahead jumper with 1:20 left. The 75-72, double-overtime triumph at Lebanon Valley was the classic game one played or watched with their heart and stomach. No team led by more than five after intermission and Widener prevailed with Fleming pouring in 24 points and Dessart Mager adding 15 and 11 rebounds.

Just like what the program accomplished 31 years earlier, the 2013 squad made its own history by becoming the first women’s team in school history to win an NCAA Tournament game. School-record marks of 24-6 overall and 16-2 in the Commonwealth Conference left an indelible place in women’s athletics at the University and provided a number of thrills. This unit’s core was led by Kate Dellinger, who possessed one of the greatest work ethics and determination seen among Widener’s studentathletes. Her run that season saw her average a team-best 11.8 points and 9.2 rebounds per game in being tabbed WBCA Honorable Mention AllAmerica for the second straight year, first team all-conference for the third consecutive season, Philadelphia Inquirer Women’s Basketball Performer of the Year a second straight season, second team Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-America for the second consecutive year, a finalist for the Jostens Trophy as the national’s premier player, first team ECAC All-South Region, first team D3Hoops.com All-Mid Atlantic Region, Middle Atlantic Conference Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and winner of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Dellinger ended her career sixth in school history with 1,255 points and fourth with 759 rebounds. Lil Carney cemented her place as one of the program’s elite players thanks to intuitiveness at point guard, her all-around hustle and ability to make big plays when it mattered most. Carney that season played arguably the most vital role on the squad in being named first team all-league for the third time and third team D3Hoops.com All-Mid Atlantic Region. She averaged 10.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game that season. Carney finished her run tops in school history with 480 assists and 10th with 1,151 points. Vanessa Hejnas provided a critical role at center with her toughness and the match-up problems caused for other teams. She ended her senior campaign with 8.1 points and 4.6 rebounds per game to go with a sterling .520 shooting percentage. Francesca Lee also made up the senior quartet and was vital to the team with her defensive presence, enthusiasm and tenacity. Her overall play and importance went way beyond her 5.7 points and 4.9 rebounds per game that season. Ally Ferrucci was like a second point guard and rounded out the starting lineup with her non-stop enthusiasm and work ethic. Jennifer Egee was picked second team all-league thanks to being one of the nation’s top sharpshooters. She averaged 11.6 points per game and broke the school’s single-season record with 68 three-pointers. Amidst a nine-game winning streak to close the regular season came a key home game vs. No. 10 Messiah that arguably put Widener in the NCAA Tournament. It was that contest in which Carney made one of her numerous big plays, hitting a driving layup with 4.2 seconds left in regulation en route to a 75-69 overtime victory, The NCAA Tournament provided the history for Widener and the first victim was Freedom Conference champion FDU-Florham. The Pride rallied from down 12 points for a 56-52 victory in which Carney scored 16 points and Egee had 13 and seven rebounds. The second-round game at ninth-ranked Catholic was as agonizing a contest to watch with a “Sweet 16” berth on the line as one could expect. The scratch-and-claw affair from Widener’s perspective started when it trailed 51-44 with 6:50 left. It ended when Carney broke down the Cardinals’ defense on the right wing and fed Hejnas, who hit a layup with 2.9 seconds left for the Pride’s only lead and a 57-56 stunner. The sectional semifinal vs. No. 16 Messiah in Amherst, MA could hardly be called a game as Widener ran roughshod in a 67-52 win. Hejnas was too much in the paint with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting, Dellinger had 13 and 12 rebounds for her 12th double-double of the season, Carney turned the game into a personal showcase with 12 points and eight rebounds, and Lee had nine and six to go with smothering defense. When the dust settled, Widener was voted 12th in the final D3Hoops.com Poll and 13th in the last Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Poll.

Schwartz Athletic Center is home to our men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s swimming, and men’s and women’s indoor track teams. It also houses Widener’s athletic administration and coaching staff in a third-floor suite. Schwartz Center offers members of the Widener community access to a gymnasium, weight room, multi-purpose field house with a new resurfaced floor and a championship size eight-lane swimming pool. The center is open from Noon-8:00 pm Monday through Friday and from Noon-5:00 pm on weekends. The facility is closed Saturdays of home football games and the Borislow Weight Room and swimming pool are subject to proper staffing.
