COACHING STAFF
Larissa Gillespie • Head Coach In her 14th season as Widener’s field hockey head coach and 20th with the program, Larissa Gillespie has accomplished a great deal at her alma mater. The team has made great strides during her time and the team looks to continue their ascent under her watch. Gillespie owns a 127-95 mark during her time, which includes five straight years with at least 10 victories (2003-07). The Pride in 2006 broke the school record for most victories (13) and advanced to the ECAC MidAtlantic Tournament for their first postseason berth. They followed with a 12-5 campaign, playing some of the nation’s top teams. September 21, 2006 will go down as an historic night for Gillespie, who notched her 64th victory to become the program’s all-time winningest coach in Widener’s 5-1 triumph over Neumann. Since Gillespie has been with the field hockey program, numerous school records have been established. The 2001 squad notched its first winning record since 1992 and the 2003 team played in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament for the first of back-to-back years. Under Gillespie’s leadership in 2006, Kate Heritage was picked first team all-region and Jaime Carr was tabbed second team. It marked the first time the team produced all-region players. Carr in 2007 also was named the Philadelphia Inquirer Field Hockey Performer of the Year, based on academic and athletic excellence. Heritage was selected to play in the Senior All-Star game that same year. That tradition continued in 2013 when Nicole Nardone, a two-time second team all-conference pick and 2011 member of the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic Honor Roll, received the President’s Award for being the student who “contributed the most to campus life through scholarship and participation in extra-curricular activities.” In addition, 12 players have been named first team all-conference during her time and 25 have been tabbed second team. During Gillespie’s time, Widener had at least one student-athlete on the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Teams from 2005-11. The Pride also have been presented a National Academic Team Award by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) the last five years.
Gillespie is in her fourth year on the South Atlantic Regional Field Hockey Selection Committee and her second year on the University’s Title IX Committee. She completed her term as chair of the Middle Atlantic Conference’s operations committee in 2009. In 2012, Gillespie received an all-expenses paid trip to the NCAA Women Coaches Academy. The convention is run by the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics (CWA), which started in 2002 and is designed to support an initiative to train and retain women coaches. Gillespie in 2013 again attended an important convention, this time sponsored by the NCAA and the National Association of Collegiate Woman Athletics Administrators (NACWAA). The sessions provided education and information on women’s athletics and Title IX, information to manage issues faced in intercollegiate athletics, improve leadership skills, develop management skills and enhance self-actualization. Only 80 women across the country in all divisions were selected to participate. Gillespie, in her 10th year as Senior Woman Administrator and eighth as Assistant A.D., received a B.S. in Sport Management from Widener in 1998 and a Master’s of Business Administration in 2000.

Assistant Coaches
Erica Crell is in her second year as an assistant coach for Widener. She has been instrumental for the team in recruiting some of the area’s top athletes and also is responsible for breaking down game tape. Crell will continue to work with the defense and goalkeepers this season. She served four years as an assistant coach at Delaware, working with the goalkeepers and also scouting opponents. Crell helped the Blue Hens win the Colonial Athletic Association crown in 2009 and compete in the NCAA Tournament. She also was a goalkeeping consultant at Lebanon Valley from 2003-2007, an assistant at Princeton in 2003 and worked with the USFHA Future’s Program from 19982009. She is Level 2 certified through U.S. Field Hockey. Crell played her first two seasons at Old Dominion before finishing at Rutgers. Leslie Kelly is in her third year as an assistant coach for the Pride. Among her duties include dissecting game tape and helping in recruiting, both of which have proved vital for the program. She will continue in her role of working with the defense and the goalkeepers. Kelly was a member of Rutgers’ field hockey team for three seasons. She competed in eight games in 2007, playing just over 550 minutes and totaling 49 saves with a .731 save percentage. Kelly served as the goalkeeper’s coach in 2010 for the Revolution Field Hockey Winter Clinic, the Competitor’s Edge Field Hockey Camp in 2009 and the Rutgers Field Hockey Camp from 2007-08. Kelly was a highly decorated athlete for Glassboro High School in field hockey, softball and track & field. She was tabbed All-Group II in field hockey, leading Glassboro to the 2005 South Jersey Group II crown.

PREVIEW Widener has plenty to look forward to as it embarks on the 2013 season. For a team which scored 45 goals in 17 contests a year ago and has quality players returning on both sides of the field, it should be another strong campaign for a team which has notched at least 10 victories in seven of the last 10 years. One of those scoring sparks is sophomore forward and two-sport standout Meghan Garvey, picked Honorable Mention All-Commonwealth Conference before she was so honored for women’s lacrosse. A dynamo who is very difficult to contain, she closed fifth in the league with 14 goals (tied for third most in school history) and tied for fifth with 30 points (tied for fourth most in school history). Garvey is hardly the only player Widener can count on up top. Senior Samantha Balonis matched her 13-point total from 2010 last season and scored five goals. She will be counted on even more this season as she looks to best that mark. Senior Brittany Gunderson is back in the mix after getting nine points last season to close sixth on the team. She played in 13 contests a year ago and hopes to get more than the two starts she had in 2012. Senior Devon Biglin also hopes for more playing time at forward as she enters the season with five goals and 13 points. The midfield gets a big boost with senior Katie Ferguson returning. With 46 starts under her belt over three years, the Glen Mills, PA native has shown she is one of the team’s top athletes and hopes that her final season is her finest. Senior Hannah Robinson is back after getting a hat trick in last season’s opener at Immaculata. Junior Mackenzie Lindquist, who was picked second team all-league last spring for lacrosse, is a gifted athlete who started 10 games last season and should be more of a factor this year. Sophomore Ashley Aires started every games last season at midfield and is back to make even more of an impact. Junior Maggie Karmeris has been a stalwart in goal the last two seasons. One of the league’s top keepers, she closed sixth in the conference last season with 68 saves. The defense takes a hit with the graduation of all-conference players Nicole Nardone and Olivia Burgese, but the cupboard is far from bare. Senior captain Hannah Dinsmore is back after ending with four defensive saves last season and only has missed one start the last two years. She is a vital competitor and now becomes the Pride’s leader on the backline. Senior Lindsay Donovan made a career high 16 starts last season and will be back once again to help the defense. The Pride bring in 13 newcomers in Meghan McLaughlin, Laura Fitzsimmons, Alyssa Giambri, Dana Adamson, Alyssa Buckley, Maddie Price, Nicole Ward, Colleen Riley, Jackie Keene, Brittany Lavin, Nicole Queen, Mikayla Ninos and Ashley DiRienzo. Widener again opens its season against Immaculata for the fifth consecutive year. The Pride have won four straight from the Mighty Macs, tying the school record for its longest opening-day winning streak. The regular season closes October 29 at Alvernia. The league’s top five teams compete in the conference tournament from November 4-9.
