COACHING STAFF

Brent Jacquette • Head Coach Widener men’s soccer coach Brent Jacquette, in his fifth year, helped the team last season take major steps in hopes of its first Commonwealth Conference title. The talent is there and the squad hopes to take an even bigger leap this season. The Pride last year closed one goal short of making the conference tournament, closing 4-4-1 in the league, and went 7-9-2 overall that included 6-1-1 stretch midway through the year. Jacquette took over after serving two seasons as an assistant. The 2008 campaign was a magical one as the Pride upset top-seeded Lebanon Valley in the conference semifinals and competed in the ECAC South Tournament. The nine victories were the most since the 2004 squad picked up 10. The Wallingford, PA native competed in the United Soccer Leagues with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in 2003 and the Minnesota Thunder in 2004. Jacquette holds a USSF “A” License and an NSCAA Premier Diploma. He also is an NSCAA Associate Staff Coach.

Jacquette also enjoyed a successful collegiate playing career, being named All-America and two-time All-Big Ten Conference defender at Penn State. He was tabbed a Collegiate MVP by Soccer America in 2002 and was selected to participate in the Major League Soccer combine in 2003. He was a four-year starter and a captain, graduating in fewer than four years with a B.A. in Telecommunications in December 2002. Jacquette’s wealth of experience also includes training with FC St. Pauli in Germany. He founded Get Ahead Soccer, which developed youth soccer programs, camps and clinics, and organized the staff to conduct training sessions. Jacquette also was a co-director of sports operations at Tri State Sports, helping develop a marketing plan for youth leagues and overseeing scheduling, staffing and billing of the complex. He also worked as a region manager at Time Warner, overseeing magazine sales in five states.

Assistant Coaches Jesse Zafiratos is in his third season as an assistant coach for Widener. His main roles and responsibilities include all aspects of recruiting, game day scouting reports, and working primarily with the forwards. Zafiratos is a Glenolden, PA native who attended Interboro High School, where he was a four-year member of the soccer team. He was a three-time first team All Del-Val selection, and earned All Southeastern Pennsylvania honors from the Philadelphia Inquirer as a senior. He also was chosen by league and area coaches to participate in the All City-Suburban Game, as well as the F.C. Delco College Night game. He played club soccer for FC Copa Blue 83 and competed at Kutztown University and La Roche College. In 47 career games at La Roche, he tallied 21 goals and 17 assists. He graduated from La Roche in 2006 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. On the youth side, Zafiratos coaches a U-10 boys, and U-9 DDP girls team for the prestigious West Chester United Soccer Club. He possesses his USSF “C” License, and has worked numerous college camps at Rider University, Widener University, Gettysburg College, Swarthmore College and La Roche College among others.

Matt Poole is in his third year as an assistant coach for Widener. Poole in 2010 was a volunteer assistant coach at Drexel. He also has coached youth teams in Nether Providence and has his NSCAA national diploma. Poole was a four-year player at Virginia, starting 78 of the 83 games he played in. He helped the Cavaliers reach the national semifinals in 2006 and was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Tournament Team in 2008. He also was named first team all-state by the Virginia Sports Information Directors and participated in the 2009 Major League Soccer Combine.

PREVIEW Steps were taken and goals were achieved. Much success can be discussed regarding Widener’s 2012 men’s soccer season. But looking forward, much can be talked about regarding how it shapes the 2013 campaign. The Pride return 18 players in hopes of getting back to the Commonwealth Conference Tournament and looking for their first trip to the NCAA Tournament. Widener last season fell one goal of the conference tournament after notching a stretch in which it posted seven results in an eight-game spurt. One of the players who was key in that run was junior Troy Czapor, who was picked Honorable Mention all-league. He made the most of his nine starts last season by tying for the team lead with six goals and 13 points, leading the Pride with three gamewinning goals after making the move from defense. Tori Remondelli exploded during his freshman campaign at midfield and also was picked Honorable Mention all-conference. A dynamic player who was one of five on the team to start all 18 contests, the Point Pleasant native was third on the squad with five goals and 10 points. When looking for leadership, senior Cody Schulte is one of the players to turn to. An exceptional competitor who always comes through when it matters most, he has started 54 games during his career and last season helped the back line post three shutouts. Senior goalkeeper Jakub Valdner played every minute in goal last season and was on his game in posting three shutouts. The determined netminder who always brings his best has started all 29 games he has competed in and will be a major factor this year. Matt Montera returns for his senior season in hopes of once again helping the defense. The defense gets a lift with sophomore Malik Krcic back in the fold. He competed in 17 matches last season with 15 starts and once again will be a vital part of the squad. Sophomore Eric Bihlear made himself an immediate presence with his lethal throw-ins that proved key multiple times and his play on defense. Sophomores Steve Yarosh, Sumo Yarkpawolo and Max Spencer also return on defense. Matt Parrotta looks to bounce back from an early season injury to get playing time at forward. Zac Furia gives a boost to the midfield after making 17 starts a season ago. Fellow sophomores Grant Shaffer (pictured) and Ross Staudt also are back to key the midfield in addition to sophomores Kyle Lynch and Eric Taylor. Sophomore Alec DelConte is back in the mix at forward with freshman Jonathan Rouse each looking for a spot in goal. The Pride welcome six newcomers in Zach Hill, Tommy O’Keefe, CJ Patterson, Austin Sosnow, Max Reid and Dave Sousa. Widener’s opening fixture is at home August 30 vs. Penn State Altoona and league play begins October 5 vs. Alvernia. The regular season closes November 2 at Elizabethtown. The league’s top five teams compete in the conference tournament November 4-9.
