COACHING STAFF

Mike LaRosa • Head Coach Mike LaRosa is in his third season as the baseball coach at Widener University. Widener has had eight All-Commonwealth Conference players over the last two seasons, including Marc Noyalis who in 2013 was picked second team All-Mid-Atlantic Region by D3Baseball. com. The Pride also saw Kyle Summers in 2013 named Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District and to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team. The Pride in 2013 also advanced to the conference tournament for the third time in the last four seasons and in 2012 amassed 20 victories. LaRosa was an assistant coach at Neumann University from 201011. He primarily was responsible for coaching the infielders, serving as the base running and assistant hitting coach as well as being the first base coach. LaRosa also was the Knights’ JV coach. With LaRosa’s help, Neumann in 2011 posted a 28-13 record, advanced to the Colonial States Athletic Conference Tournament and

competed in the ECAC South Region Tournament. The 2010 team went 20-18-1 and played in the CSAC Tournament before advancing to the ECAC South Tournament final. LaRosa was a four-year starter at second base for West Chester University, serving as captain his junior and senior seasons. He was tabbed All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference all four years and was named the NCAA Division II National Defensive Player of the Year in 2003. He graduated with a career .362 batting average and ranked second, now fifth, in school history with 234 hits. He helped the Rams to two PSAC East regular season titles and three trips to the NCAA Tournament. After graduation, LaRosa played professionally for the New Haven County Cutters in the Canadian-American Independent Baseball League. LaRosa graduated West Chester in 2005 with a B.S. in Business Management and was a four-year member of the school’s StudentAthlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). He earned his Master’s in May 2012 from Neumann in Sport Management.

Assistant Coaches Brian Campbell, a former standout player for the Pride, is in his third season as an assistant coach for his alma mater. Campbell was a key member of the squad as a pitcher and a shortstop from 2004-07, being named first team All-Commonwealth Conference in 2006 and 2007. As a senior in 2007, Campbell led the league with a 1.37 ERA and was third with 23 stolen bases. In 2006, he closed fourth in the league with a .401 batting average and was picked to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team. His playing career did not end in Chester as he competed for three seasons with the Lincoln Saltdogs of the American Association. Campbell also competed for the Veracruz Winter League and was a 2007 New York State League All-Star. He also was a three-time member of the Middle Atlantic Conference Academic Honor Roll. Campbell graduated Widener in 2007 with a degree in Business Management. Dewey Oriente is in his third season as an assistant coach, serving as Widener’s hitting coach and recruiting coordinator. Oriente competed four years for Saint Joseph’s, being named all-region and Honorable Mention All-Atlantic 10 Conference in 2009. He also was picked to the Philadelphia Big Five All-Academic Team. Oriente also was tabbed first team All-Big Five in 2009 and 2010, as well as second team All-Atlantic 10 in 2010. He competed for the Kutztown Rockies of the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League in the summer of 2009. In his first two years with the Pride, Oriente mentored six All-Commonwealth Conference hitters and two All-Mid Atlantic Regional players. Oriente has worked at MapleZone Sports Institute and still operates the Delaware Valley Youth Athletic Association Little League summer camp. Oriente graduated Saint Joseph’s in 2010 with a Bachelor’s of Finance.

Matt O’Neill is in his first season as an assistant coach for the Pride. He played his final two seasons of college baseball for league-rival Alvernia, helping it to a Commonwealth Conference title in 2011 and berths in the NCAA Tournament in 2011 and 2012. In 2011, O’Neill batted .250 with 21 hits, 10 RBI and a .996 fielding percentage in starting 26 games at catcher. The following season, O’Neill recorded a 1.000 fielding percentage. O’Neill, who played his first two seasons at SUNY New Paltz, also competed three summers with the Alfred Oilers/Thunder in the New York Collegiate Baseball League. He also was selected to play in the 2010 NYCBL Prospects Game. O’Neill coached the Exton Jr. Legion squad in 2012, primarily responsible for the pitchers and catchers in addition to serving as third base coach. He also guided the U-16 Berkshire Sea Dogs in the fall of 2012, leading the catchers and serving as first base coach. He also has taught at Southern Middle School in Reading and Conrad Weiser High School in Wyomissing. O’Neill graduated magna cum laude and received his B.A. in Secondary Education/Social Studies from Alvernia. He made the Dean’s List three times. Joe Johnson is in his first season as an assistant coach for Widener. He arrived after serving as an assistant coach at Cardinal O’Hara, helping the squad to playoff berths each season. Johnson also served as head coach of Springfield’s Cal Ripken Baseball team. He guided the unit in 2010 to its first state and regional championship, which placed it in the Cal Ripken World series in Wilson County, NC. Johnson graduated Millersville University in 2007 in a B.S. in Business Management.

Widener’s baseball team in 2006 moved to a beautiful new on-campus stadium on the site of the former softball field. The field is one of the finest college baseball facilities in the Philadelphia area. It sports dugouts, bleachers, a scoreboard, a press box, three batting cages, four pitchers mounds off the field, a 30-foot blue monster in left field and the same grass used by the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. A true site to behold, it is one of three on-campus fields and four all together that underwent an extensive renovation during the 2005-06 academic year.

PREVIEW

Making a return trip to the Commonwealth Conference Tournament was a big step for Widener’s baseball team. The Pride this season

look to take that even further as 15 players are back hoping to make 2014 an even better year.

Widener always has had a strong pitching staff and that is bolstered this season with the return of junior Robert Barth, a second team

all-league pick a season ago and one of three all-conference players back this season for the squad. Barth had six outings last season in which he tossed at least seven innings, including a memorable start by tossing 9 2/3 frames of an 11-inning triumph at Messiah. He ended with a 4-4 record, was third in the conference with a 2.21 ERA and posted a team-leading 41 strikeouts.

Sophomore Shawn Barton also will be a factor on the hill after making six starts a season ago, a number that certainly will go up this year.

Barton went 2-1 last season over 33 innings and opponents hit just .281 off him.

Senior Glenn Stanners could see time on the weekend after making four starts last year. His first season after transferring from Delaware

County Community College saw him record two saves in addition to closing tied for third on the team with 19 strikeouts.

Sophomores Craig Lager and Dominick Mancuso each made seven appearances last season and are seeking for more playing time this

year. The same can be said for seniors Peter Pulhac and Colin Weiss as well as sophomore Kevin Scisorek as they look to make their mark this season.

A key piece in the infield in senior first baseman Michael Riverso, who was picked Honorable Mention all-conference last season. He

batted .312 with 11 extra-base hits and 25 RBI last season, but what can not be forgotten is his solid glove as he ended with a .994 fielding percentage. Riverso only made one error over 175 chances and helped turn 13 double plays.

Second base belongs to senior Kyle Summers, who was picked Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District and a member of the Phila-

delphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team. A more than reliable player who was the only one for Widener to start every game at his position a season ago, Summers batted .262 last year with 15 RBI and a .962 fielding percentage.

Sophomore Pat Rodier is back after starting 12 games at third base, ending with a .225 batting average over 40 at-bats.

The outfield looks strong with junior Matt Scherer back in the fold. The second team all-league pick had an explosive bat last season

and hopes to continue that in 2014. He led the conference with four triples, was third on the squad with a .345 batting average and paced the squad with a .531 slugging percentage.

Senior Sam Christie made 32 starts in the lead-off spot last season, all in center field, and he will be a valuable player this season for the

Pride to succeed. He led the conference with 21 stolen bases on 24 attempts, ranked second with 19 walks, notched a .256 batting average and had a .957 fielding percentage.

Junior Josh Everett and sophomore Joe Santone each got playing time a season ago in the outfield and look for more this year.

Marc Noyalis will not play this season due to injury. This is a major blow to the Pride after he was tabbed second team All-Mid-Atlantic

Region, second team all-league as a reliever and Honorable Mention all-league as a utility player. Noyalis led the Pride with a .369 batting average to go with 55 hits, 12 doubles and 36 RBI.

The Pride have 21 newcomers in Michael Rytelewski, Bob Barnett, Nick Wright, Mi-

chael Elfreth, Justin Healey, Paul Shepherd, Nicholas Enos, Joseph Richie, Eliott Snyder, Justin Czupryna, Alex Bussison, Donovan Davis, Greg McDonough, Edward Speakman, Kyle McKelvy, Brandon Liddick, Nick Donovan, Brett McCutcheon, Dominic Bisirri, JD Donnelly and DJ Burns.

Widener’s season opener is February 22 at Gallaudet and the team travels to Fort My-

ers, FL to play seven contests in early March. League play begins March 14 at Lebanon Valley and concludes April 26 at Messiah.

The top four teams in the league compete in the conference tournament, which this

season shifts to York, PA.
