early design and tessellations
Visual Communication
My final product differed greatly from my original design. I did not really know what to do at first, and I kind of planned as I went along. My rough draft didn’t look so great because of bad planning. In my next draft I decided to look back at my other work and see what worked and what didn’t. I wanted to keep the focal point off of myself. I decided to put in on the apple. By making it a bright red and by putting it against a light background, I feel I have achieved this. I also tilted the apple to give it a feeling of weightlessness. I used the Photoshop effect, “cutout” so that I looked more like I was hand-painted. I also gave my pictures a lot of sharp edges to give it more of that comic book feel. This draft came out a lot better than the previous one because I made a layout and drew inspiration from my adjectives. The trait that I chose to bring out in the picture was introspection. I feel that heroic “powers” that involve levitation, telekinesis, etc, are powers are centralized around the mind. Usually heroes with these abilities are calm and collected. I am quiet and think before I act. I feel like I take in environments and the people around me. This is why I decided to use a dull color which had a great contrast against the multicolor background. I wanted to show the differences between my outside façade and how I really am inside. This project really made me think about who I am and what I display to the world through my outward appearance and actions. 6
The creation of tessellations becomes second nature once you make enough. I feel I have finally become proficient with all the tools we have learned so far in illustrator. By using the techniques in our tessellations I’ve been able to use positive and negative space effectively. To create a tessellation I started out with a basic shape. I then rotated out a piece of the shape to create half of the tessellation. After rotating the same piece on the other side I tessellated the shape to create unique positive and negative designs. When I started tessellations I did not know what would happen when
Making expanded shapes showed what can be done with positive and negative space. To make these shapes I used what I learned while make the expanded squares. The edges of the circle are not uniform like a square, however, and it was difficult to rotate or mirror shapes out perfectly. The radial guides helped improve the shape’s balance. For the symmetrical expanded circle, our shapes would almost always turn out to be bug-like. I decided to try to replicate the anatomy of a bug, knowing that both sides would be the same. The other expanded circle would be rotated before expanding, giving it a natural swirl. My original design for this circle was a lot more complex, but I had problems rotating the shapes out. I simplified the shape to make it look smoother. The design choices I made changed to fit my limited knowledge of Adobe Illustrator

Evolution of Line Line Reflection The last 5 weeks in graphic design we learned about the “line element of art. Line is one of the most basic building blocks of art and design. It was very interesting to see how line can invoke or portray emotion and feeling. While it is more difficult to physically draw these lines due to minor consistency errors, it helped me learn to find my own design style. Using the computer made it much easier and I was able to make unique and interesting designs with only a few clicks. Because it is so simple to create things in Illustrator, it is much easier to get what I mentally envision onto the computer than physically drawing. 4
