Lightning Monitoring System

Tip from the Pro Matt Williams, PGA Director of Golf National References Belfair Bluffton, SC Ansley Golf Club Atlanta, GA The Farm Golf Club Rocky Face, GA Shinnecock Hills Golf Club Southampton, NY Ocean Forest Club Sea Island, GA Cape Fear Country Club Wilmington, NC Spring Island Club Spring Island, SC Sea Pines Country Club Hilton Head Island, SC

Just wanted to inform you that the Club is now being protected with a new lightning monitoring system, Earth Networks. Earth Networks is a real-time lightning detection system with outside warning sirens to protect our members and guests in the event of inclement weather. Going forward should you hear the horns sound this means lightning has been detected inside of an 8 mile radius of the Club House and you must come off the golf course and the tennis and pickleball courts for 30 minutes or longer depending on whether the system detects lightning again. Ultimately, you will not be able to return to the course or courts until the horns sound in three consecutive 5 second intervals signaling a return to play. The horns are located on top of the Clubhouse and at both bathrooms on the golf course. The horns were extensively tested throughout the course for alert volume at the tennis facility as well. Certainly there are areas where the sound is louder than others but we feel confident there is ample volume to warn you at these facilities. This being said I would still advise our members to be aware and prepare to hear the sound when you know weather appears imminent. The siren system is operational from 7:30 AM until 9:00 PM seven days a week.

Regarding the pools at the beach and all areas around the Beach Club the system will operate the same way, lightning detection inside of an 8 mile radius of the beachside pool, however it is unlikely you will hear the horns sound at the pools except on rare occasions when the wind might carry the sound to the beach. Therefore, a strobe light has been installed at the Poolside Cafe to alert the facilities at the beach when there is lightning in the area. The Charlotte Country Club strobe light will not go off until it is safe to resume activities. Additionally Charlotte, NC managers and other staff members receive text notifications when there is an St. Ives Country Club alert to assist in informing members and guests in these areas to evacuate the Johns Creek, GA premises. The strobe light system is operational from 7:30 AM until 10:00 Seabrook Island Club PM seven days a week. Seabrook Island, SC We are excited to have a better system in place to protect our members, guests, The Dunes Golf & and employees! Tennis Tip from the Pro Pun Dayaratne, PTR Professional Pro Tip: How to Beat the summer heat. #1 Be an Early Bird Courts are ready as early as 8am Play during the coolest parts of the day. Early mornings or late evenings. Grab a court that has shade.

#2 Hydrate and rehydrate.

Coolers on courts are filled with ice and water every morning. Drink plenty of water before you play but do not forget to keep your hydration levels when playing in the heat and humidity.

#3 Dress to Impress.

Wear white or light-colored clothing during your summer tennis. Wear hats, visors, sunglasses to keep the sun away from your face and don’t forget the sunscreen. Keep an extra towel handy to soak with cold water to go around your neck during breaks.

#4 Prepare for the heat.

Bring your favorite sports drinks and snacks. bring extra sweat bands, headbands, t-shirts to change when needed. Limit your play during the hottest part of the day.

#5 Pace your self

Start slow and gradually pick up your speed as you go. Have a long warm up to get your body acclimated to the heat. Take breaks as much as you can.

#6 Know your limit.

If you feel any heat illness or feel uncomfortable, stop playing and get some rest. Stay out of the sun when possible. Experienced players will choose a head light racket for control, generate spin maneuverability and net play

Beach Yoga

Tues, Thurs, Sat 8am Join us and start your day with a Vinyasa flow. Tune into the sound of your breath and the sound of the ocean. Relaxing the mind but focused, Deep, conscious breathing helping the creative process by increasing and directing the flow of thoughts. Doing beach yoga near the sea, promotes this mindful state and reduces our stress levels, promoting mindfulness. 1. AVOID SLIPPING ON THE SAND. Leave nice yoga mat at home–and do not forget a large towel to put under your old, crusty mat to keep you from sliding around on the sand., or just use your towel, the bigger the better. 2. PROTECT YOUR FEET. Under no circumstances should you bring a BLACK mat to the beach. The color absorbs heat and can burn your tootsies. Sand is not a level surface. This can make any standing yoga pose difficult and potentially more prone to induce injury. The solution is to twist your feet a couple of times, so they dig deeper into the sand, giving you better balance. 3. HEADBANDS ARE COOL. Keeps the sweat out of your eyes. Sun lotion is optional. Practice is early and your pores need to be open to sweat. Bring a non-spill container for water and eat fruit before you come. 4. DON’T FORGET YOUR SUIT. Wear your swimsuit underneath your yoga clothes or practice beach yoga in clothes you do not mind getting wet. 5. GO WITH THE FLOW. Allow the sounds of nature: the birds, the ocean, and yes, even the wonderful people of DeBordieu to be your soundtrack. Do not be flustered by the distractions. Let them bring you into the present moment and more into your experience. DBD Beach Yoga is weather dependent Contact Drew at 401-441 2199 for cancellations or any questions about Beach Yoga. Members are $8 and must sign in before class starts. Guests are $15 or $20 if unaccompanied with member and must pay before class. All levels are welcome.
