AUGUST 2021• VOLUME 93 ISSUE 63

AV/ELUL 5781| AUGUST 2021| VOLUME 93 ISSUE 63

RABBI FERRATIER’S FINDINGS On most electronic devices, there is a process to reset the device to the way it was when it was brand new. I find this reset button both comforting and terrifying. It is comforting to know that no matter how badly I mess it up, I can always put it back to the way it was before. However, it’s also terrifying, because the second I use the reset button, I know that I will lose all of the changes I have made to the device since I got it. As we move into August, it feels like we’re on the verge of hitting the reset button on our lives. Schools are mostly back to normal, people who were working from home are returning to their offices, and at CBS, we are back to in-person daily minyan, in-person meetings, and although religious school will be a little different, students and teachers will be here in the building. We’re also coming up on our annual spiritual “reset” moment - the High Holidays. Even though our High Holiday services will be a little different this year, we should still use them as an opportunity to “reset” ourselves for the coming year. We have missteps to correct, priorities to re-evaluate, and goals to set. However, I’m not sure that “reset” is the best description of what we should be doing this year. While it is true that on a spiritual level the High Holidays give us the opportunity to start Rabbi Ferratier

over with a clean slate, we can’t just pretend that the last year and a half never happened. Even though, in some ways, time felt frozen during the pandemic, the truth is that the world continued to turn. We welcomed babies and mourned losses. Our loved ones started new jobs or lost their old ones. People lived, laughed and loved. No one is exactly the same person they were when the pandemic began. Literally and figuratively, we can’t fit ourselves back into the same clothes we were wearing in March of 2020! We may not be able to completely reset ourselves, but it is worth thinking about what we can reset moving forward. Which relationships became stronger over the last months? Which relationships need a little strengthening after months in isolation? Did CBS help you get through these months? How might your involvement in the Jewish community change now that it is no longer limited to participation through Zoom and live streaming? The High Holidays always provide an opportunity for reflection and introspection, but this year it feels a little more urgent. I’ll look forward to seeing you back in-person very soon! May the coming year bring all of us health and commitment to resetting ourselves and our world!
