THE PANSY PATCH NOVEMBER 2017

THE PANSY PATCH

Kickoff for CASA LSU weekend was filled with lots of laughter, cherished memories, and philanthropic hearts. The sisters of Delta Omicron hosted our Fall event, Kickoff for CASA. We invited our sisters of Delta Kappa at Louisiana State University to celebrate with us and others of the University of Alabama campus. Throughout the week prior, members sold tickets and raised awareness for the event. In addition, we invited alumni to come help and support CASA. Through this event, we raised money and awareness for a cause near and dear to our hearts, CASA. Each semester, we put together a big event, so this fall we celebrated with Kickoff for CASA. Within the week leading up to the big event, member classes competed in Penny Wars. Each pledge class had a jar that collected change and they could put dollar bills in other pledge classes’ jars as negative points. Through this, the freshman pledge class won and contributed $266.29 towards CASA!

The sisters of Delta Omicron have been working tirelessly to make an incredible weekend to showcase CASA. Everyone that attended enjoyed great home cooked jambalaya from our amazing kitchen staff. As we continue through the end of this semester, we are looking forward to next year, where we will host Crawfish for CASA on Saturday, February 24th.

Movie night Members got together and enjoyed a movie night at the local movie thetare for the viewing of Happy Death Day. It was a fun filled evening of popcorn, treats and good laughs with our sisters before leaving for the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend.

Kickboxing at 9 - round We decided to step up our kickboxing skills and try a kickboxing class at 9 round in Tuscaloosa to see how our routines matched up. Kickboxing has become a personal favorite as a sisterhood event to our members, and is also a fun way to get in shape and bond with our sisters!

Holiday Decorating For another sisterhood event, as the weather got colder members decorated the house to get it in the holiday spirit. There are lights strung all around, wreathes on the windows and doors, and trees in every room. Members wore their favorite holiday sweaters and danced to their favorite holiday tunes as they helped decorate the Theta house with our House Mother, Ms. Kathy.

Jewlery for a cause On November 3rd Kappa Alpha Theta partnered with Sigma Delta Tau to shop a selection of beautiful Kendra Scott jewelry. A percentage of the proceeds went to both CASA and Sigma Delta Tau’s philanthropy, Prevent Child Abuse America. Staff from the Raw & Rebellious jewelry also came to the Theta house for a trunk show. A portion of the proceeds from buying jewelry were donated to CASA. It was a great way for members to make a difference and get a cute piece of jewelry for a great cause!

Out of the darkness walk On November 12, Thetas participated in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Awareness Walk. At the walk, AFSP offered information and resources about suicide prevention, as well as the resources here for use at the University. This year as a house, we raised $3,450 for AFSP through our fundraising page. NOVEMBER 2017 | 4

B+ Spin - a - thon The 3rd annual B+ Spin-A-Thon was held at the Presidential Recreation Center on campus. Theta and The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation have been working together to help raise money for the 46 kids that are diagnosed with cancer each school day. Leading up to the event, there was a whole week called “Gold Week with different fundraising events each day. Many Thetas are involved in the B+ Foundation, and we are so proud of their hard work in coordinating the Spin-AThon and helping families overcome having their children diagnosed with cancer. This year, the accumulating total of money raised this year for the B+ Foundation was $107,481.27 for the fight against childhood cancer. Our B+ Hero, Ava Kate was at the event and members participated in the fun themed hours while spinning on their stationary bicycle. The hour themes were: All things Alabama, Hawaiian, Disney/Throwback, USA, Rave, and to finish the event was a Green-Out for Be Positive.

Leading women of the month: Julia Travagline & Kiersten Crouse Our Leading Women of the Month for November are seniors Kiersten Crouse and Julia Travagline. Kiersten and Julia served as the 2017 Co-Presidents of The B+ Foundation at Alabama. They led the organization to raise $107,481.27, a 212% increase from 2016. Additionally, they raised tremendous awareness for childhood cancer within our chapter, helped us get paired with our wonderful B+ hero Ava Kate, pushed us to raise $17,923 for The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation and served as true examples of what it means to be leading women. We’re so proud of y’all!

Crafting with Ava Kate Our B+ Hero came over to the Theta house for some holiday crafting with some of our members. Crafting included making hand turkeys and coloring them, designing paper pumpkins to get in the holiday spirit and hanging out with the girls! It is always a fun time when Ava Kate comes to hang out.
