Hello & Welcome Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Hendy Torque – a complete overview of all the exciting things happening at Hendy. Let’s start with the elephant in the room. Coronavirus has been a challenge unlike anything we’ve ever experienced, but despite it being one of the toughest years in the company’s history, at Hendy we still have so much fantastic news to share. We have grown considerably since the last edition, with 21 manufacturers now under our umbrella. With new locations across the South Coast we have also welcomed brilliant new colleagues to Team Hendy, all of whom have adapted to the challenges of the last year to continue offering a fantastic, safe experience to both new and returning customers. We have always been proud of our forwardthinking outlook. We are now confidently transacting online, offering a range of digital options when it comes to car buying, and have been working hard to meet the demand for
alternative fuel vehicles as the focus turns to hybrid and electric driving. This edition of Hendy Torque will take you through some of the latest news from our manufacturers, as well as providing updates from all areas of our business, from our Car and Van Stores to our Performance division. At a time when bad news lurked around every corner, it has been a source of real pride and joy that customers continued to trust in Hendy to meet their vehicle needs. MUSTANG MACH-E The Ford Mustang Mach-E is the redesigned, technologypacked, fully electrified Mustang for the next generation. FIESTA MILD HYBRID KUGA PHEV The Ford Fiesta is the UK’s most popular car, so it makes sense that Ford fast-tracked it for mild hybrid status. The Fiesta’s new mild hybrid (MHEV) powertrain comprises Ford’s award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, assisted by an electric motor, plus a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. The separate 48V Li-ion battery is automatically charged with regenerative braking, i.e. capturing energy that would usually be lost – meaning there’s no plugging in required for this innovative mild hybrid model, and you can enjoy everything you love about the Fiesta without having to stop and charge up. PUMA MILD HYBRID Ford have committed to having 16 new electric and hybrid vehicles in the UK by the end of this year. They’ve already begun, with the New Puma Mild Hybrid embodying their new direction. This sporty SUV comes with a powerful yet efficient hybrid powertrain; its EcoBoost hybrid technology incorporates a small electric motor with a 48-volt battery to help improve efficiency. The electric motor provides additional support to the petrol engine. There’s no need to connect the Puma to an external power source, as the battery pack is recharged while you drive and also uses regenerative braking technology to increase your fuel economy.
You can personalise your driving experience by choosing one of five different driving modes: Normal, ECO, Sport, Slippery and Trail. Whatever’s ahead of you, you’ll have a safe and comfortable drive. Created in collaboration with motorsport icon Malcolm Wilson, MS-RT takes Ford’s commercial range and gives each vehicle a sporty, performance-enhanced design. Mustang Renovation At the time of going to print, the Hendy Performance team are in the process of restoring a stunning 1965 Ford Mustang Coupé. This iconic model started life in California, before being imported in an unrestored state from Florida in 2018. Our team of specialists began by completely stripping the vehicle down and giving it a full bare metal respray. They are now rebuilding the vehicle, ensuring that they use as many original,

restored parts as possible. While they work hard to maintain the authenticity of the original, instantly recognisable body and period trims, the Performance team are also adding some modern touches. Thruxton Motorsport Centre Hendy Performance joined forces with Thruxton Motorsport Centre in 2020 as part of an exciting partnership that will allow those taking part in driving experiences to enjoy the very latest Ford technology. We supplied seven brand-new Ford cars to Thruxton, giving drivers the best possible opportunity to sample the handling, speed and capabilities of the Ford Focus ST, Focus ST-Line and the Fiesta ST-Line.
The Focus models are also used at race meetings as safety cars, and have become an integral part of all activities at the circuit. The Fiesta models are used on the junior experience courses, which are for budding drivers as young as 12 looking to get a feel of driving before they turn 17.
Tiff Needell We were delighted last year when former Grand-Prix-driver-turnedtelevision-presenter Tiff Needell became the official ambassador for Hendy Performance. Tiff, who has appeared in a wide range of motoring TV shows, will be involved in a variety of activities for Hendy Performance, including creating thrilling videos to showcase the performance and sports car side of the business as well as personal appearances. Hendy Foundation was established in 2018 as a way to give back to the communities in which Hendy Group operates. Since it began, Hendy Foundation has provided numerous grants of varying sizes to local projects, people, events and charitable organisations across the South Coast. In total, almost £1.75m grant requests have been received, equating to over 500 grant applications. Typically, each quarter Hendy Foundation donates approximately £10,000 to successful applicants with recipients as varied as counselling for mental health, BMX bikes and jackets for a town band. Each request is carefully considered by the independent trustees, who are committed to ensuring the funds are spent in the best possible way to support our communities. Because of this, grants are awarded to local causes only; however, religious, national, international or political organisations are not accepted. Since last year and the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for grants from Hendy Foundation increased, mainly because charities have not been allowed to fundraise in their normal way, resulting in massive loss of income. Without this income, many charities are on the brink of closure or are struggling to provide the services that the community so desperately rely upon. Thankfully, Hendy Foundation was able to continue to provide grants throughout 2020, helping those in need at such a crucial time.
How you contribute: Hendy Group donates £1 for every retail vehicle sold to Hendy Foundation on a quarterly basis, with a figure of around £50,000 donated each year. Not only this, but the Group partnered with the charity Pennies in July 2020. Customers can now choose to donate an optional £1 when they pay using a card payment terminal at any dealership. Pennies make it easy for people to contribute towards local causes, with 90% of the donation going to Hendy Foundation and the remaining 10% going to charities that Pennies support. During the first lockdown at the beginning of 2020, the trustees decided to provide grants to those in immediate need of financial assistance to help them with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in many people being furloughed and therefore experiencing a loss of income. The funding from Hendy Foundation was two-fold; firstly, a COVID-19 Support Fund was set up for colleagues of Hendy Group who needed help with their food bills; secondly, a large donation to food banks across the South Coast was awarded. In total, eight food banks benefited from the grant. Being able to give back to our local communities is such a privilege, and it is so rewarding to be able to support those causes that make a real difference to peoples’ lives.

Lockdown not shut down As with the vast majority of retailers in March last year, the decision to close our dealerships last March was a difficult but necessary one. After a confident start to the year, the realisation that we would have to shut most of the business was a blow, but the way our colleagues responded was nothing short of astounding. For those first few uncertain weeks of the initial lockdown, we had only four Service departments open for essential and urgent servicing in Poole, Portsmouth, Eastleigh and Horsham. It was at these departments that we continued to offer maintenance and repairs to key workers, grateful that they could stay on the road and continue their vital work. Behind the scenes, there was a core group working diligently to keep the business moving. From the digital advisors handling hundreds of enquiries via social media and live chat every day to the People team ensuring furloughed colleagues stayed up to date with developments, there was a fantastic response from all involved.
When the second lockdown came into effect in November, we again had to shut our doors to the public. This time round, however, we could still operate from inside the dealerships, with Sales teams answering calls and emails and adapting to a new way of conducting appointments. Video calls and walkarounds were introduced to give customers all the information they needed from the comfort of home. All of our Service departments, bodyshops and Parts departments remained open, meaning we could still assist those needing MOT tests, servicing and repairs as we had been. We were also offering click and collect and home delivery options, allowing people to still collect their keys and drive away in their new purchases without having to wait.
In mid-May we were able to reopen our accident repair centres and then on 1st June, we were finally able to reopen the doors to our showrooms. With strict safety protocols in place, it was wonderful to welcome customers back and pick up where we left off in albeit different circumstances. Now we had clear signage to ensure social distancing, as well as hand sanitiser stations and one-way systems. We went almost completely paperless where we could and encouraged payment by card to limit cash handovers. We introduced a strict vehicle sanitisation process across our Sales and Service departments to ensure we kept customers and colleagues safe. All of these changes have now become part and parcel of the way we conduct business.
All of this brings us to…now. Three lockdowns later and while we’ve had to make major changes to the way we work, we have been able to adapt quickly to continue offering the same fantastic service that our customers have come to expect. 2020 may have been one of the toughest years in Hendy Group’s history, but we’re still committed to delivering 100% customer satisfaction, as we have been since 1859.

Confused? We’re here to help We know there’s a lot of confusion around electric and hybrid vehicles. How do they charge? Will it run out while you’re driving? What’s the difference between a BEV and a PHEV? And, most importantly – which one is right for you?

Hybrid (HEV) A hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) uses two sources of power – a traditional petrol or diesel engine and an electric battery or motor. These vehicles automatically switch between the engines, selecting conventional power, pure electric (usually for shorter journeys), or both. There’s no plugging in required – the battery is charged by recovering energy that would otherwise be wasted to help with acceleration or even driving at low speeds.
Mild Hybrid (MHEV) Mild hybrid electric vehicles (MHEVs) are a great way to introduce yourself to electrified driving. These models house a small electric motor that assists the petrol or diesel engine, aiding efficiency when at low speed or stationary. The separate battery is automatically recharged using energy usually lost when braking. As with the HEV, there’s no plugging in required.
Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) You’ve probably heard about plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) the most. These come with a larger high-voltage battery that is charged up using a plug-in charge cable connected to an external supply. The bigger battery means you can produce zero emissions for longer, with the petrol or diesel engine ready to kick in if you need it.
Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) A pure battery electric vehicle (BEV) runs on electricity alone, with no petrol or diesel engine at all. You’ll produce zero emissions wherever you go, and also benefit from incentives such as free travel through Clean Air Zones. To charge it, just plug it in either using a home charging station or a public charge point.

Our property portfolio While our showrooms and forecourts remained closed to the public for several periods throughout 2020, behind the scenes our Property and Maintenance team were working hard to ensure numerous projects were completed on time. Our priority in March was, sadly, preparing all of our locations to shut down, securing them and shutting off the water. When reopening in May, the team spent a fortnight installing one-way systems, barriers and screens, as well as developing our health and safety protocols for all colleagues to feel safe when they returned.

The biggest project over the last 12 months was the installation of electric vehicle charging points at the majority of our locations. We have been able to install the same equipment across the board where brands allowed, keeping the system consistent and as easy to use as possible. Most locations now have multiple 22kW AC chargers available, with some working in Dynamic Load Balance mode where power is restricted to avoid overloading the dealership.

Property projects completed across our regions in the last 12 months include:
Surrey: In July we relinquished Ford Transit sales operations in Horsham and Redhill, consolidating them at Crawley at what has become one designated Gatwick Transit Centre on Manor Royal. We ceased Mazda and Suzuki operations in Crawley also, installing the increasingly popular MG brand into what was the Mazda showroom alongside Ford cars in September 2020.
Sussex: The introduction of CUPRA to our Brighton showroom saw the team erect CUPRA-branded display area into the existing SEAT showroom space as well as new CUPRA signage to create a stylish and eye-catching area dedicated to the performance arm of the Spanish manufacturer.
Kent: The work to replace the former Hendy Ford showroom on Avebury Avenue, Tonbridge, with a new Honda location began in December 2020 and was competed in February this year. This was a lengthy job and involved the full refurbishment of the showroom, new signage and upgraded facilities to accommodate any disabled customers.
Hampshire: Though already a service and used car centre, our Leigh Road, Eastleigh, location formally became a Renault and Dacia sales dealership in December 2020, bringing new and used sales under one roof. Signage was completed in March 2021, ready in time for the reopening of showrooms on 12th April. We also added Lotus sales to our Performance division, operating out of a special facility at Leigh Road.
Dorset: Hendy Toyota Christchurch was another example of a full showroom refurbishment, inside and out. The internal work was finished in February 2020, but the first lockdown forced the external rebranding to be paused. This was ultimately completed in June 2021. Extensive refurbishment also took place at what is now Hendy Renault and Dacia Poole. This began with the relocation of Hendy Hyundai Poole from this location into a former Peugeot showroom on the same site in January 2021, and involved a full showroom redesign, external painting and new signage. The second stage was the refurbishment of the previous Hyundai showroom to remove the internal walls and create a new Renault and Dacia showroom space, which also includes commercial sales. This work was completed with the final furniture installations in February 2021. Additional projects in Dorset included the introduction of Hendy MG Poole to Leyland Road in December 2020, and branding and signage at MOKE Hendy Poole.

Partnerships We are proud to be able to support a number of ambassadors, organisations and events across the South Coast. The Hendy Tunbridge Wells Half Marathon was able to go ahead last February and the Hendy Wessex Heartbeat Cycle Sportive also took place in October, but the Hendy Eastleigh 10k in March was postponed. We supply vehicles to several big sporting names, a number of whom we have been working with for a few years now. We are delighted to see them continue to come back to Hendy for their vehicle needs. Among our ambassadors are former Team GB hockey captain and gold medal winner Alex Danson, fellow Olympian and cyclist Dani Rowe and LPGA golfer and British Open champion Georgia Hall.
Teenage racing sensation James Hedley had a fantastic season on the track as he completed the British F4 season with four poles, four race wins, six fastest laps, seven podiums and one triple crown. We’re supporting him on the road to F1; his kit and car bears the Hendy name.
We became the official motor partner of AFC Bournemouth during the 2019/20 season and were thrilled to continue this partnership into this season as they fight to get back into the Premier League. We have significant branding at the Vitality Stadium and have also been involved outside of their league campaign, hosting their AFC Business networking event at our Jaguar Land Rover showroom in Christchurch. Not only that, this season we have been able to provide their media team with a Ford Tourneo Custom so they can travel to away games in style.

Hendy Group has been named as official supporter of Hampshire Cricket for the 2021 season. We have supported Hampshire Cricket and its players for a number of years and as part of the agreement, the first team players will have the Hendy name on their shirts for the Men’s One Day Cup and the T20 Blast together with advertising in the ground and a social media presence. This year we are also sponsoring Árón Taylor-Smith in the British Touring Car Championship. Árón, a seven-season veteran, is competing as part of Team HARD in a CUPRA Leon. With prominent branding on Árón’s car, helmet, racesuit and in his BTCC garage, this sponsorship is perfectly timed with the recent launch of our CUPRA dealership in Brighton.

Hendy 25 Club One of the many casualties of 2020 was our 25 Year Club celebrations. This annual event is always highly anticipated and sees us take time to recognise those colleagues who have shown exceptional dedication to their careers with Hendy. We were delighted to welcome eight new admissions to this prestigious club in the summer of 2020, making the total number in the 25 Year Club an impressive 122. We pride ourselves on having colleagues of the highest calibre who share our visions, and having so many people who have worked with us for so many years demonstrates support in our approach to business. Among those who joined the club last year was our Head of Used Car Sales Richard Reed, who joined the company as a general sales manager and moved his way up through the ranks. He cited a variety of roles and
opportunities within the Group as having contributed to a great career. Newcomers to the 25 Year Club also include Eastleigh Used Car Sales Manager Malcolm Eales who oversees FordStore, Renault and Dacia products. Christopher Hill, who is a service driver/cleaner in Eastleigh, is also a newcomer to the club together with Eastleigh Used Car Sales Controller Jason Butt, Senior Cashier Sandra Gilby, Poole Service Technician Simon Lane and Parts Driver Martin Ford who is based at Segensworth. It is a great honour to know that so many colleagues choose to build their careers at Hendy, and we are looking forward to welcoming more new members to the 25 Year Club in 2021.
