KEYNOTE SPEAKERS krista barnett FOUNDER, CEO OF BOOTBAND Krista Barnett is the founder and CEO of BootBand, the company that produces and sells the only removable boot expander in the world. dave britt ENTREPRENEUR, ARTIST AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE GREATER ROSEWOOD MERCHANTS ASSOCIATION

Dave Britt is the executive director for the Greater Rosewood Merchants Association, a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote businesses on Rosewood Drive and bring tourism to the area. His responsibilities include communications with local businesses, acting as a liaison between local businesses and local government, as well as producing special events like the Rosewood Crawfish Festival, the Rosewood Art and Music Festival and the LoCo Craft Beer Jam. Dave is a graduate of the University of South Carolina. In addition to the responsibilities of his day job, Dave also owns the event planning business SOLID Entertainment, which is a partner in the local music venue, The White Mule, and is the chair-elect for the Columbia Opportunity Resource (COR). FEATURING WALLY “FAMOUS” AMOS AMERICAN ICON, CREATOR OF THE FAMOUS AMOS CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE KAHUNA GOURMET COOKIE BRANDS

American Icon, Wally “Famous” Amos, is the creator of the Famous Amos chocolate-chip and Cookie Kahuna gourmet cookie brands. Amos learned to bake when he was sent to live with his Aunt Della in NYC after his parents’ divorce. This special time in the kitchen with his aunt helped him overcome adversity and eventually lead to his success! As the first Black talent agent with the prestigious William Morris Agency, Amos discovered Simon and Garfunkel and worked with musical greats, such as Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye, who along with singer Helen Reddy became early investors in what would end up as the Cookie Man’s legacy. Amos has penned nine books, of mostly motivational and inspirational concepts that he’s utilized in his own life. His upbeat and positive thoughts and ideas have made him a frequent speaker at various events. Book number ten is already in the works! The children’s story, based loosely on his life, will help people of all ages embrace every aspect of life, so they can find their true purpose and passion! After living in Hawaii for some 40 years, Amos currently resides in Columbia, South Carolina where he is baking his delicious bite sized cookies at the SC Farmers Market in collaboration with restaurateur Dupree Percival. Amos continues to be a motivational speaker, community activist and entrepreneur and at 82, he is launching what he calls “his final cookie company”. Aunt Della’s Cookies is a tribute to the special woman who taught him how to bake cookies so many years ago. CONCURRENT SESSIONS Mary Pat Baldauf SUSTAINABILITY FACILITATOR, CITY OF COLUMBIA Presentation Title: Taking Your Business to a New Level: The Benefits of Going Green Mary Pat got an early start as an environmental activist at the age of four, when she and her mother cleaned a littered alley in the small town of Vass, North Carolina, and she hasn’t gotten off her soapbox yet. As the City of Columbia’s Sustainability Facilitator, Mary Pat guides sustainability efforts consistent with the City’s Climate Protection Action Campaign, Columbia’s initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address related environmental issues. She has been with the City for over 10 years. Previously she served as recycling coordinator for Lexington County and director of Keep the Midlands Beautiful. Proven Strategies to be a Successful Business of the Future LaSonya Berry is the president and CEO of McPherson, Berry & Associates, an industry award winning human resources consulting firm. She is an HR thought leader with an exceptional track record of helping businesses and individuals achieve their full potential. She has served on various boards including the National Association of African Americans in Human Resources and the Carolinas-Virginia Minority Supplier Development Council (CVMSDC). CONCURRENT SESSIONS Ernie Grigg, Jason Porter, and Claire Robinson THE CAROLINA AGENCY Presentation Title: Digital Reputation: Making Social Media Work for You Ernie Grigg is a strategic communication consultant and educator with more than fifteen years of experience working for a variety of startups, non-profit organizations, and small businesses. Ernie currently serves as the managing director of The Carolina Agency, the award-winning full-service strategic communication firm housed on the University of South Carolina campus. The Carolina Agency helps clients use a metrics-based approach to develop and execute well-thought out digital and traditional communication programs. Ernie is also an instructor at the University of South Carolina School of Journalism and Mass Communications. Ernie received a Master of Science in Public Relations and Corporate Communications from New York University (NYU) and a Bachelor of Arts in Film, Television, and Theatre from the University of Notre Dame. Jason Porter is an award winning animator and designer. He creates interactive visual stories that span across media platforms including video games, print, web, television, and film for Disney, Volkswagen, Sprint and Target. The stories he designs engage the very culture of the new media landscape through augmented reality, virtual reality and interactive experiences. He completed his Master of Arts in Media Arts from the University of South Carolina where he currently teaches in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Claire Robinson is the agency director for The Carolina Agency. Through her experience with The Carolina Agency and other jobs, she has been responsible for creating weekly social media content, tracking social media insights, and engaging with social media users. Claire also has previous experience overseeing various public relations accounts and assisted with content development, problem solving, and client communication. Prior to assuming this role in June 2018, Milton served as the Director of Corporate Services for CVMSDC, overseeing an affiliate office of the Council in Charleston, South Carolina. Along with her experience as a business owner, Milton also brings more than 25 years of corporate experience to the Council. A specialist in new business development, Milton earned her Bachelor of Science in Economics from Spelman College and a Master of Business Administration in Marketing from Pennsylvania State University. She is currently working toward a Doctorate in Business Administration, with a focus on Leadership, Supply Chain, and Entrepreneurship. With more than 35 years of expertise in sales, advertising, new business development and retail management, Milton provided marketing direction for three national products. As a general manager, she also led the Coastal Carolina merger efforts and ongoing retail expansion of a global telecommunications company. Vanessa Mota and Ulises Chavez CEO, MOTA ENTERPRISES, LLC / CEO, ANGLO-LATINO PROMOTIONS, LLC Presentation Title: The Importance of Connecting with the Latino Market Vanessa Mota was born in Chicago, Illinois. For the past 11 years, she has served as CEO of Mota Enterprises, LLC, a bilingual business consulting firm with the mission of uniting, connecting and diversifying every community she touches. Her goal is to connect and crosslink the Anglo and Latino business markets. Currently, Vanessa is the president of Empresarios 101, a networking Latino group, vice president of the Columbia Chamber of Prospanica, and a member of the Mayor’s Minority Business Advisory Council for the City of Columbia. She utilizes her degree and expertise in international relations to connect others in the entrepreneurial arena. She has written many articles and has been published in the Latino statewide newspaper, Prospanica’s Newsletter and Exposure Magazine. Ulises Chavez is the Bilingual Marketing Consultant and CEO of Anglo-Latino Promotions. His company connects the community through social and private events, creating an atmosphere of cooperation between the English and Spanish-speaking communities. Ulises completed the City of Columbia’s NxLevel Micro-Entrepreneur Training as well as the FastTrac Growth Venture Training. She is committed to finding practical, real world solutions to her clients’ employment law needs. She frequently advises clients regarding hiring, discipline, investigations, and other related issues. Sheila has extensive experience working on collective actions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and class actions under wage and hour state laws. Sheila also handles matters related to employment discrimination, wage and hour litigation, OFCCP compliance, unemployment proceedings, as well as providing training for supervisors and managers on harassment, Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) compliance, the Family Medical Leave Act and many other areas. Mrs. Willis is the recipient of the 2019 Silver Compleat Lawyer Award from the University of South Carolina School of Law’s Alumni Association. She has been recognized locally and nationally in publications such as Columbia Business Monthly, Columbia Regional Business Report, and the American Bar Association in the area of employment law. FASTTRAC GROWTH VENTURE is a course designed to support the entrepreneur seeking to take their existing business to a higher level. This program assists entrepreneurs in analyzing their current business condition to identify the best opportunities for growth. THE NXLEVEL MICRO-ENTREPRENEUR is training that prepares entrepreneurs to compete, win, and survive in the marketplace. It is designed for businesses with less than five employees. CITY of COLUMBIA MISSION: The Office of Business Opportunities (OBO) is committed to supporting initiatives that benefit small, minority, and women owned businesses located in, or that want to do business with, the City of Columbia. This is accomplished by providing creative financing and funding, technical assistance, and the City’s utilization of local, minority, and women owned businesses to ensure that our funds contribute to the economic growth of all communities.

COMMERCIAL LENDING & FAÇADE IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM

The Commercial Revolving Loan funds available through OBO provide financial assistance to start-up and existing businesses for expansion, creation, the retention of jobs, and assistance in the redevelopment of commercial corridors within the City. Our Commercial Retention & Redevelopment Program aims to improve the appearance of businesses along the corridors throughout the City that are significantly deteriorated.

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE, EDUCATION & ADVOCACY

Provides business development assistance and courses for start-ups and existing businesses looking to expand and grow on various topics including: marketing, use of social media, business plan development, finances, legal issues, and more.

CONTRACTOR & SUPPLIER DIVERSITY

Provides training and support for city initiatives designed to increase local contractor’s capacity to compete for government contracts and other procurement opportunities. We are also responsible for the implementation of the City’s Disparity Study goals and objectives. Programs include: Sub-Contractor Outreach; Mentor Protégé; Local Business Enterprise; Columbia Disadvantage Business Enterprise; and Construction Management Training.

The City of Columbia is committed to maximize opportunities for all small businesses by assisting in the cultivation and growth of historically Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBE) including, but not limited to Small Businesses, Minority Businesses, and Women-Owned Businesses. In an effort to encourage access and product/service diversification, the Office of Business Opportunities (OBO) is responsible for implementing programs designed to encourage DBE participation in all areas of our procurement process. These programs include our Local Business Enterprise, Columbia Disadvantage Business Enterprise, Subcontractor Outreach, and the Mentor Protégé programs. Additionally, the City has implemented a citywide 10% DBE goal to further our efforts to increase the participation of socially and economically disadvantaged businesses.
