DENVER STYLE MAGAZINE FIVE AT FIVE WITH CHRIS PARENTE

WHAT’S THE ONE ITEM YOU REGRET THROWING AWAY OR NOT BUYING? I’ve thrown away so much over the years: My youth, my dignity, my entire collection of “Trump Ties.” But in truth, I have very few regrets about “owning” things. Ya can’t take it with ya, as they say. I much prefer to collect memories … times spent with friends and my family, and exploring new and amazing spots on this magnificent Planet Earth

WHAT DO YOU WEAR THAT MAKES YOU FEEL THE MOST CONFIDENT? My “Golden Girls” meggings (man leggings) are a real confidence booster, as is my t-shirt with nothing but Images of Oprah (yup, I do actually own both those things). But I’d have to say, a simple necklace that I wear

every day brings me confidence and reminds me of what truly matters.

It’s a small, wooden cylinder that contains the ashes of my Mom. She lived life with such joy, and filled our home, and my life, with laughter and love.

WHAT ARE YOU ALWAYS TELLING YOURSELF? My daily Mantra is one I repeat with the discipline of a Buddhist Monk:

“Where did I put my keys, where did I put my keys, where in the Hell did I put my keys.” Beyond that, I do like to

remind myself to be in the “now,” to live in the moment. We spend so much time looking back or looking ahead, it’s easy to forget that this current moment, this moment right now … is all we ever truly have . Also, if you’ve seen my keys please send text or email.

WHAT IS YOUR NOT SO SECRET INDULGENCE? Those who know me, know I truly love Improvisation. I studied at “Second City” in Chicago, and

I’ve played in troupes around the country.

Yes, it can be *very* funny stuff, but the skills learned in Improv carry over into all aspects of life. To cooperate, to affirm others, to build something out of nothing … together. Now, can I have a suggestion on where two people might meet?

IF YOU HAD MORE TIME, WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH IT? Look, we all know time won’t give me time. And time makes lovers feel like they’ve got something real. But I digress. If I had more time, I’d spend it with my Dad. Colorado has been a dream for me, but living so far from home (my family is back in Indiana) comes with a price tag. I missed so many precious moments during my Mom’s long fight with Alzheimer’s, and every day, I wish I could just share a lunch or a conversation, or a jazz concert with my Pops. I’d also like to learn Salsa, read more, get in better shape, garden, volunteer with at risk youth, produce a Broadway show, marry the love of my life and raise a family. Oh God, now I’m stressed.

Where are my keys?

Self-made businesswoman and beauty-industry entrepreneur, Lyndsay Wilson,

began her journey to cosmetology soon after graduating college. Finding that attending cosmetology school after getting her degree in psychology might be a step in the right direction in order to pursue her passion for beauty, Lyndsay hit the ground running, working a variety of jobs revolving around the beauty industry. From styling hair and working with makeup at Nordstrom to working in plastic surgery for seven years, Lyndsay became educated and well-rounded in the beauty community and the employment opportunities surrounding it. Being that entrepreneurship was always in her blood, her boutique salon, Glamour Bar in Denver’s Golden Triangle district, was born and continues to show off Lindsay’s immense talent in the field. Glamour Bar was created not only from a desire of wanting to do something new, but also because it would be a unique addition to the Denver area. After working in plastic surgery, Lyndsay got the “seven-year itch,” when she felt it was time for a change. Finding that Denver lacked a salon where customers could get all of their beauty needs met in one place and with high-quality service, Lyndsay was motivated to put her skills to the test and build a business for herself. She describes Glamour Bar as “A one-stop glam shop” that offers a plethora of services. It provides more typical treatments like manicures, pedicures and waxes, to more advanced cosmetology care like lash extensions, skincare and even wedding/party services. Customers can find comfort in knowing they are receiving the best care, and all in one place. Lyndsay emphasizes how important it is to her and her staff that customers feel at home in, and trust, her salon. It has become crucial that all customers are treated with VIP care, while feeling as though they are part of a community that Lyndsay hopes to grow over time. Because she continues to work towards building a family-like group to bring people together who have a common interest in all things beauty, she has created several outlets for educational purposes or simply start

to know her and her business, as well as answer their pressing questions. Additionally, she features other local entrepreneurs and boutiques to expand the audience’s knowledge on the number of powerful beauty-entrepreneurs who are taking over Denver. She states, “It’s a good resource for the community to learn about the beauty industry.”

circle, she also has a podcast in the works named, “Business of Glam.” With the podcast, she hopes to promote more discussions about the business side of beauty, talking about what it’s like being a woman entrepreneur in such a large and complex occupation. Furthermore, she hopes to provide resources, life advice, and “how-to’s” for other female entrepreneurs and small business owners within the city, and beyond. With Glamour Bar and her great deal of work outside of her local business, it is evident that Lyndsay wants to help clients in hopes of expanding and developing a team of motivated and influential businesswoman within Denver’s beauty industry. With the beauty community already expanding, particularly in Denver, Lyndsay exclaims that it is important for people to remember that she and her team are the experts. With outlets like social media and YouTube providing quick and easy ways for audiences to gain knowledge on aspects of beauty, which Lyndsay so greatly appreciates, she notes that she wants her viewers to know that information on certain outlets can be misleading. The tips given at Glamour Bar, and by Lyndsay on her live-stream, are reliable sources of information; she and her staff are highly educated professionals in their field. She says, “Because we are experts, you are going to hear things you don’t want to hear, because we are being honest.” Lyndsay and her group strive to give customers the best results, which derive from telling customers the truth. This may not always be what they initially desire, but she emphasizes repeatedly that her team proficiently work to do what is best for the customer. As for the future, Lyndsay hopes to continue to give back to the community by being involved with charities. She even hopes to potentially start her own charity in some way revolving around beauty. She strives to find her niche within Denver’s beauty circle. In addition, she plans to have more Glamour Bar locations both in and out of Colorado, and wishes to produce her own product line. She has revealed that she is already working on it. As a powerful entrepreneur, Lyndsay Wilson remains primed to change the game of the beauty industry, both in and outside of Denver.

COUNTER COMPARISON Follow Denver Style Magazine, Beauty Contributor, mom, and HookedonBeauty.com Editor, Carissa Passerella, for an inside comparison of over-the-counter remedies that claim quick results Vs. treatments that should definitely be done by a professional.

While summer slowly comes to an end, I start to welcome all things fall like boots, flannels, pumpkin spice everything, and of course some new skincare tricks to renew my skin from 3 months spent mostly outdoors. I don’t know about you, but around mid September my skin starts to become dull and lifeless with specks of discoloration that I’ll lovingly refer to as freckles fully knowing that a cute moniker doesn’t disguise the fact that it’s actually sun damage. The good news is that there are solid solutions to get back to a glowing, more radiant, clearer complexion whether you prefer an at-home treatment, or if you’re in the mood for a spa experience starting at just $30.

PEELS A peel is a great way to renew your skin and chase away dullness to reveal brighter, smoother skin. It’s the perfect end of summer treatment that gives noticeable results.

OTC For a deep at-home treatment, local brand Sanitas Skincare uses vitamin A to deeply exfoliate the skin bringing new, fresh skin the surface. It’s so powerful they advise using it just every few weeks and it will cause some flaking and redness- both hallmarks of the process. Look for fresher looking skin and a smoother texture after just a few uses. Retinol Peeling Cream, $80; Sanitas Skincare

SPA

Bre Morris, the owner of Alchemy Face Bar in Boulder and Denver freshened my skin up with a Blackberry Detox Peel which she mixed with enzymes for some added benefits. A combination of Blueberry, Raspberry, Blackberry, and Pineapple juices along with lactic acids got to work giving my skin giving a slight tingle so I could feel it working. After my face was slightly red and lightly flaked a few days later. Overall I could see a measurable difference in brightness and some of my scaring had lightened up as well. Blackberry Detox Peel, $60; Alchemy Face Bar

MICRONEEDLING With several companies now offering hand-held devices, micro-needling is more popular than ever. Poking micro-channels using ultra fine needles creates a wound that your body than heals by creating new skin. This response stimulates collagen, fades scaring, and lessens discoloration from the sun.

OTC BUDGET F R I E N D LY

This at-home roller is great for a rolling rookie who might be intimidated to get started. It features .25mm needles which are minimally invasive meaning you won’t get bleeding, but you’ll still create the tiny channels needed to get the overall effect. You can even use it nightly (before serums to get better penetration), and in just a few weeks you’ll start to see an overall better skin quality, lessening of lines, and brightening of pigment. It’s an easy step to add to your existing routine and it works, but consistency is key. Stacked Micro Roller, $30; Aillea.

the vampire facial TREAT YO’SELF

When all else fails, there’s always the much buzzed about Vampire Facial. I saw Rachel Bacon RN, at Alchemy Face Bar, in Denver recently for this procedure that broke the Internet when it first came out. First Rachel washed and prepped my skin before applying numbing cream on my face and neck, and then took a tube of blood from my arm. She then spun it into a centrifuge to separate the platelet rich plasma (PRP) from the red blood cells. The PRP contain growth factors that heal your body, stimulate collagen which is what you need to create a stronger foundation for better looking skin. She then took the PRP, which looks like a yellowish liquid, and put some into a syringe and the rest into a little dish. She injected it into my lip lines for some plumping, as well as those parentheses around my mouth and any dark spots from acne scars that were more pronounced. The rest of the solution she brushed over my skin and ran the Dermapen back and forth over my now-numb skin. The Dermapen is a little hand-held device that stamps micro-needles quickly up and down into the skin at various depths depending on how damaged the skin is and what area of the face she’s treating. Unlike the home roller, you can go much deeper so some pinpoint bleeding does occur (thankful for the numbing cream!), but the deeper you go, the better the results you get which is why this treatment is so popular. Vampire Facial, $800; Alchemy Face Bar

SPECIAL ADVERTISING

EXTENSION EXPERT PHOTOS BY HILLARY BROWN

Adding eyelash extensions to your beauty maintenance can cut down your daily routine, but finding the right person to lengthen lashes should take a little more time than downloading a deal. Learn what you should really know before you go from Lash Educator, Alexis Weisenburger, of AW Lashes CO.

FINDING A LASH ARTIST

WHAT TO EXPECT

AFTER CARE

Alexis Weisenburger from AWLashes has seen it all…the good, the bad and the ugly and suggests the following tips before your scheduling your appointment.

The hard part is over – you’ve selected a lash extension artist! You’ve done your research and you’re feeling good with your decision, but what should you expect at your first appointment?

You’ve selected a lash artist and you are now sporting some amazing lashes – cutting your morning routine down and giving you back some much-needed sleep time! How do you make your lashes last as long as possible? After care is KEY to retention of your lashes and to avoid inflammation and infection on the eyelid.

TRAINING

Make sure your lash artist is trained and certified in lash extensions. In Colorado anyone with a license in cosmetology can legally do lashes. Make sure you find someone that has taken a specific course in lashes and has the certificate to prove it. Don’t be afraid to ask your potential lash artist where they did their training. EXPERIENCE

TALK TO YOUR ARTIST

Lash extensions are a commitment of both time and money – so communication with your lash artist is key! Make sure he/she understands your lifestyle, the look you’re going for and any skin sensitivities you may have. The more information your artist has – the happier you’ll be with the outcome!

AVOID MOISTURE FOR THE FIRST 24 HOURS

Don’t get your wet for the first two hours, or use a spa, sauna or pool for the first 24 hours. Avoiding extra moisture in that time period will let the adhesive properly cure and create the best bond possible for better retention. EXPERT TIPS

If you are getting a classic set of lashes (one extension per lash) the artist you select should have a minimum of six months of experience. For Volume lashes (multiple extensions per lash) make sure they have been doing lashes for at least two years. Again, don’t be afraid to ask how long your potential lash artist how long they have been doing lashes.

CALM AND PEACEFUL ENVIRONMENT

When you get to the salon, or spa for your appointment the room should feel calm and peaceful. And just know it’s okay to both take an enjoy a “lash nap!” Clean. Your lash extension artist will be working on your eyes. Make sure the space is clean and tools used are properly sanitized.

Ǯ Avoid pulling or rubbing your eyes or using eyelash curlers with your extensions.

CHECK OUT THEIR WORK

EYELASHES SHOULD FEEL LIGHTWEIGHT AND BE PAIN FREE

Ǯ After showering it best to blot them with a towel and let them air dry.

Most lash artists and salons will have a social media presence on Instagram and FaceBook – check them out! Look at the pictures they post – do you like the way the lashes work? Could you picture the work that they do on you? When you zoom in on the pictures what kinds of details can you see?

When your appointment is complete your lashes should feel lightweight – you should be able to open and close your eyes as normal. In addition, you should feel absolutely no pain. Your eyes may have a little bit of shortterm redness due to adhesive fumes but done correctly, lash extensions are completely pain free.

READ REVIEWS

What kind of reviews is a lash artist getting? Is the feed back primarily positive, or negative? On the negative responses – how did the artist handle it? Reading reviews will give you a lot of insight on client satisfaction.

Ǯ Stay away from mascara if possible and ONLY use oil-free makeup remover, creams and makeup in general. Over time oil-based products can break-down the adhesive.

Ǯ Brush and clean your lashes every day! Ask your artist how to properly brush and wash your lashes and then verify at your fill appointments that you cleaning regimen is effective. Properly cleaned lashes will help you to prevent eyelid infections and it will increase the bond with the adhesive. Ǯ Have your lashes filled every 2-4 weeks, or on the schedule your lash artist recommends.

ABOUT THE EXPERT With more than seven years as a professional lash artist and as a lash educator, Alexis Weisenburger from @AWLashesCO knows what an impact selecting an expert lash caregiver and aftercare can make on lash extensions. WORDS FROM THE WISE JUDITH BOYD @stylecrone

PHOTOGRAPHED AT LEON GALLERY @ifoundleon FEATURING ART FROM PATRICK WILKINS @patrickmartinwilkins FUN ISN’T FUN ANYMORE

Speaking from her own experience, StyleCrone, Judith Boyd, talks aging in style, the exhilaration of vintage shopping and how engaging in diverse and inter-generational relationships contributes to growth.

V I N TA G E S H O P P I N G T I P S Vintage shopping can be one of life’s greatest joys.

The thrill of the hunt and unearthing a gorgeous piece from another era and giving it new life can be exhilarating.

AGING IN STYLE

I’ve found that through meeting other women in the blogging world, there is a support system or sub-culture of older people in the style blogging community who encourage self-expression. For me, style has become more important as I age. The larger culture is youth focused and promotes a not so subtle message that aging equals invisibility.

However, it’s important that you inspect each piece for imperfections, including insect damage, fading, stains, loose trim items, fabric fragility, or tears.

Expressing oneself through style changes that equation and it’s very powerful.

Holding the garment up to the light can be helpful. It doesn’t have to have a label but quality is important.

It’s a political act and a way to respond to ageism.

dressing up in a dressed down city

To be passionate about anything as we age improves quality of life, enhances health, and increases longevity.

I love it! It’s my form of self-expression and it doesn’t bother me if I dress differently than most.

It’s important for me to be my true self and I feel comfortable with that. I also appreciate the style of someone who is more interested in dressing casual. Judgement is not good for the hair and skin.

It’s a mindset, and if you accept and embrace aging, research indicates that it can add over seven years on to your life.

one piece of advice women need but don’t get

What I focus on first in my life is my health because if I’m not healthy, everything in my life becomes compromised. My health includes my lifestyle, self-care, healthy relationships, exercise and mindfulness. We need to empower ourselves and those who we come in contact with. I believe in collaboration over competition and supporting one another as opposed to judging and demeaning others.

Kindness, gratitude, and empathy matter. Engaging in diverse and inter-generational relationships also contributes to our growth and the health of our culture.
