FALL INTO COOLER TEMPS WITH WARM STYLES STRAIGHT FROM THE STREETS OF DENVER.

Cara Newheart @NEVERSKIPBRUNCH

I’m really into split shaft booties this season. They’re great for cankles and help give thicker legs a slimmer look.

Jasmine Hartman @JASMINEHARTMAN I wear heels everyday. I’m always more dressed up than everyone else, but that’s me!

PHOTOS BY: GINA (GALINA) KHRESTSOV, GALERISA PHOTOGRAPHY, @GALERISAPHOTOG PHOTOGRAPHED ON LOCATION AT STANLEY MARKETPLACE, @OHHEYSTANLEY

Natalie Shiver Here in Colorado anything goes and you can be comfortable in anything you wear here. It’s a great balance.

Mary Violet Woosley @MARYVIOLETWOOSLEY

This season I’m incorporating more of a western theme into my wardrobe with metallic earrings, vintage accessories, western prints and shapes.

Prasanthi Kadiyala @PRASANTHI_KADIYALA

My personal style is about balancing both western styles with traditional Indian styles.

Drea Brown @SIMONE_ON_THE_PHONE

I could wear a mini skirt all year long. It looks great in the summer and can be layered in the winter.

Aaron Rodriguez @BLANKCANVASFASHION

Fall is my favorite season and I just love layers and the idea of long layered textures.

Maria Fermin @BEAUTYTPSBYML

I’m wearing my clothes more fitted to show off my shape and love wearing my husbands button down shirts.

move

out the door

I’m betting the luxurious feel of these thickly woven tuxedo stripe pants (with vegan leather) will make you forget you ever wanted to wear anything else. They’re cozy for those soon-to-be chilly days and are perfect to pair with a slouchy sweater and those over the knee boots you keep eyeing. I’m a fan of beautiful fabrics but am not a fan of dry cleaning. By placing this delicate top beneath the sweater, we keep it away from the inevitable spit up and sticky fingers while still draping ourselves in something feminine.

LET’S BE HONEST, MOMS…

we love the idea of dressing comfy. We’re exhausted, have a million things to do and we want easy and convenient. I have six kids…believe me. I get it. But do you sometimes look in the mirror and cringe with the realization that you’re wearing yoga pants again and you don’t even do yoga? (I’m slowly raising my hand here) After holding on to maternity clothes post-pregnancy because they fit better than regular clothes (why doesn’t anyone tell you that you don’t lose that tummy pooch right away?!), I yearned for something that had some femininity and shape. Something that felt like there was more to me than simply being a mom. That being said, it’s really important to fully embrace motherhood. To be the kind of mom that goes down the slide at the park and who gets down on the floor to play dolls or Legos. This is just a little pinprick of the ideas I’d love to share, but let me show you some alternatives so we can save our yoga pants for the gym, and give an outward expression of the cute, fun mom I know we all are.

play date THERE ARE DAYS WHEN I JUST WANT TO WEAR A SKIRT. YOU TOO? Because this one is long, we can easily cuddle up and read in a blanket fort and still look put together for lunch when friends come over for a playdate. Remember, if a skirt is loose, wear a more form fitting top. Look for prints that add a pop of fun like this tiger head turtleneck. I adore that it can also be paired with anything from jeans to leggings… because our clothes should be able to be mixedand-matched. And hey, nerdy glasses are always a good idea for those tired eyes!

On Teresa: Red Jumpsuit, $62; Pink’s. Sequin Clutch, $65, Black Strappy Heels, $87; Sterre. Hoop Earrings, $63; June Ruby.

evening engagement Before kids, we may have had hours to prep for dates, but these days we often don’t. That’s ok!

A JUMPSUIT IS THE PERFECT CHOICE FOR THOSE OF US WHO HAVE ONLY MINUTES. There’s nothing even to match (and you can ask him to zip up the back, which you know…is always kinda sexy)! I remember feeling like I’d never wear earrings again because when I did, chubby little fingers would pull on them. But date night is your chance to dust those beauties off and slip them on. Brushing on a little black mascara and a donning a bold lip takes mere seconds.

MEET THE COLOR CONNOISSEURS

AT

oVertone

Meet the innovators bringing us healthy color for healthy hair. Bright hair is one of the biggest and best fashion trends around. But as most of us know, that bright color fades almost instantly. oVertone cofounders Maegan Scarlett and Liora Dudar are finally fixing that! oVertone is a color-depositing conditioner that can maintain a vibrant shade or even add a new color to hair. oVertone began three years ago in Tucson and Los Angeles when Maegan and Liora, who had met through mutual acquaintances, realized that they could work together to finally find a product that will help keep hair healthy and color vibrant at the same time. They began researching methods better than the DIY ones we all hear about, and a month later, oVertone was born. They concocted 18 colors out of

Maegan’s kitchen, ranging from Pastel to Extreme shades. These days, oVertone is a collection pigmented conditioners that can nourish and color hair at the same time. These ladies had a bit of an unexpected path to oVertone. Liora, a self-proclaimed feminist killjoy from New Jersey has worked as a photographer, Liora K, for much of her life. Maegan is from Atlanta and is a seasoned entrepreneur, starting three businesses before starting oVertone. Though they were in different cities with different backgrounds, their shared need for a better product led them to where they are today. Speaking about their collaboration, Maegan says, “She’s been involved in art her whole

life; I’ve been involved in business my whole life. Our two brains came together and here we are.” The products are manufactured in Tucson, with Liora first focusing on client services in Tucson and Maegan first doing marketing from LA, but as Maegan puts it, while in Tucson, “We realized that marketing wasn’t really functioning the way we wanted it to.” Maegan and Liora decided to move to Denver about a year ago, and they are thrilled to join this community. Liora says they love “the community of entrepreneurs who are all sort of driving at the same goals and can all understand each other”, adding that “the creative talent here is ridiculous.” Liora and Maegan are the heart of oVertone, but they have created the brain through their customer care Color Experts. oVertone has worked to train color experts to guide clients through the coloring process and help people understand how color works and what will work best on their hair. Liora says, “We believe that people should be empowered to handle their own color.” Control of our hair color and its wear and tear has been something we have so long given the reigns of to professionals, but these ladies are working to help with that. They compare the importance for control in hair color to control over our nails or makeup. We can get it professionally done, but we have the choice to find quality products and knowledge to do it on our own as well. oVertone really prides themselves on giving us that with our hair color. There are 24 shades to choose from in the current inventory, but the possibilities do not stop there. Shades of conditioner can be combined and layered to create infinite looks. Maegan says, “We want people to experiment with their hair but do it in a way that’s really safe and healthy and fun”. These products are not dyes; they are high-quality conditioners that happen to deposit pigment into the hair.

“We believe that people should be empowered to handle their own color.”

Heads are sure to turn when you mix some of your favorite Fall accouterments like Romantic ruffles, feather earrings, leather/ mixed media jewelry pieces, stripes and bold footwear.

Don’t be afraid to add a pop of color for contrast. Choose fabrics with different weights so you can easily layer and take your look to the next level. Choose pieces that elevate your style like sleek sneakers, a dress denim, or shirts with miniature prints and patterns. Accessories add casual luxury any man or woman can appreciate.

The ease of social media selling means direct sales companies, peddling everything from printed leggings that have a cult following to powders, herbs, and oils to cure every woe, are on the rise. But are they a scam or a side-hustlers saving grace?

If there was a job that offered you unimaginable earning potential, the chance to travel the world, flexible hours that you made yourself, and ownership of your own business, all while you were working from home in your pajamas, would you say it’s too good to be true? For millions of direct sellers across the U.S., it’s a daily reality. Direct sales companies offer everything from beauty products and clothing to kitchenware and health insurance services. The business model relies on distributors, who pay a small fee to sign up, to sell directly to customers. Distributors earn money by selling products through old school methods like catalogs and in-person parties where potential customers have the opportunity to sample products, or through more modern approaches like social media or websites, or by recruiting other sellers beneath them and earning commissions off what their recruits sell. A direct sales company and multi-level marketing company are not one and the same. Multi-level marketing companies are usually direct sales companies but with the added caveat that members earn commissions and bonuses based off the number of other sellers they bring in. If they recently seem more prevalent, it’s not imagined. The Direct Selling Association currently represents over 140 U.S. based member companies and there are more than 20 million people involved in direct selling just in the United States. In the U.S. alone, sales volume grew from $29.6 billion to $34.47 billion from 2008 to 2014 and the amount of sellers grew from 15.1 million in the U.S. to 18.2 million in the same time period. The growth for these types of companies is steadily outpacing the growth of more traditional retail sales and, when we consistently see big box stores closing locations and sharing losses, would-be entrepreneurs are

taking notice. Now is the time to jump in. “LimeLight is experiencing hyper growth. I knew that one day, LimeLight will be just as widespread as companies like Mary Kay or Arbonne; a household name. But by that time, I would be at the top,” Sara Duffey, a makeup artist turned Limelight by Alcone representative, says of her decision to take the leap into direct sales nearly a year ago. Nearly 90% of the 2013 DSN Global 100 companies rely on the recruitment model for direct sellers, which allows sellers to earn from their own efforts as well as off those they train and recruit. Sellers are encouraged to recruit members but most say that’s not their focus. “I focus on a mixture of sales and recruiting,” says an anonymous representative for scent brand Scentsy. “You never want to become too focused on one because you want a well-rounded, healthy business.” For Sara Duffey, “When I first started and did not have a team, my focus was a mostly on sales and a little on recruitment. As I have grown, my responsibilities have shifted. Team leadership, coaching and mentorship is a significant part of my time.“ Others sell at events, like local business expos or markets or pop-ups inside other local businesses. For L’Erin Stortz, a rep for wellness brand Isagenix, her sales come for a mixture of sources. “Social Media is about 75% of my business, Health and wellness Expos or Healthy Happy Hour pop-ups at local gyms are about 10%, referrals are about 5%, and our team events and online

earnings are directly based on sales, and therefore, their own effort. Most companies don’t cap earnings, meaning you can make as much as you put into your business. Many have special recognition for sellers who have sold more than $1 million annually or in lifetime sales. Some sellers just really, really like the products they represent. They may have started as customers and been recruited to sales either for the added income or for the perks and discounts that come along with becoming a seller. For Jen Bailey, she chose Rodan + Fields because “my own personal results have been better than I thought was possible. I knew it was a product I could stand behind.” Continued support and education from parent companies is also key for many direct sellers. Instead of going at their communities are the remainder.” business completely alone, they have a company behind Just who’s joining these companies? An overwhelming them ready to offer training materials, marketing help and majority, 74%, of direct sellers in 2014 were women. A inspiration. Most companies offer an online training or whopping 22% were Hispanic. (By comparison, the U.S. resource center with everything from pre-created social population was 18% Hispanic in 2014, according to the U.S. media marketing materials, webinars and courses to online Census Bureau.) These trends show that direct sales does networking opportunities. Top direct selling companies offer offer opportunities for groups who might not otherwise be yearly training conferences or networking conventions for involved in entrepreneurship, as well as opportunities for growth. Millennials are more favorable toward direct selling sellers to learn from top performers, connect with other sellers and learn about new product releases. When asked what her than other generations and 21.4% of sellers are ages 25-34. host business provides, wellness brand Isagenix seller L’Erin With many looking for a side hustle to pay down debt or save for big expenses, direct sales offers the lure of potential Stortz shares “Everything! That’s the genius part. When you start your own company with anything else, you have to income. create your website, marketing, etc.. Isagenix provides you This business model has proven it’s staying power and with everything! All the tools, your own website, your own become increasingly popular for a variety of reasons. The marketing material, merchandise, trainings nightly with top start-up costs associated with the majority of direct sales leaders, everything.” companies are surprisingly low, with most requiring just Many direct sellers feel the support they receive from other a couple hundred dollars to purchase initial inventory, sellers in their companies makes this job stand out from training and marketing materials, and access to support others. Says Sara Duffey, “Each team and it’s leaders do a great from their parent company. Jen Bailey, a Rodan + Fields deal to comprehensively come alongside and mentor their skincare consultant, says “I bought a starter kit for $695. team members. We have a very strong family mentality here. There were opportunities to get started for as little as $45 A true sisterhood. It is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.” but I wanted more product in order to let friends sample the different options.” Some require no initial investment at The corporate office of Scentsy echos her statement. “This all and allow sellers to take orders without buying inventory business is all about support. We call ourselves a Scentsy family because we’re there to encourage and inspire each other, no themselves. By comparison, other business models can require thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars matter what.” in initial investment. And then there’s the perks of a job well done. Many direct Overhead and operating costs for running a direct sales sales companies offer monetary bonuses for sales targets business can also be lower than other businesses. Since reached. Others offer trips, like fragrance brand Scentsy, which sales are done from home, there’s no need for a brick and plans to take consultants on a seven day Mediterranean cruise mortar retail or office space. The low cost to entry is a low in June 2018. For consultants who earn enough points from cost to operate. Sellers are increasingly using social media sales and other consultants, this trip can be all expenses paid. to market themselves and directly sell products. Profiles are free to set up and use. And with an estimated 2 out of 5 Americans learning about new brands and products from social networking sites and with the rise of influencer marketing and bloggers, social media is ripe for selling. “I conduct my business 95% via social media. Specifically – Facebook,” admits Sara Duffey, who goes ‘live’ on Facebook three times a week to share a tutorial or tips on products. For many, the flexibility offered by being your own boss and scheduling your own work hours means the ability to earn extra money while being able to focus on other responsibilities. Most of the work for direct sales is done at home, at your own pace, and is flexible for those with family responsibilities or who are just looking to supplement other income sources. Flexibility isn’t limited just to working when and where you choose; income potential is flexible. Seller’s

Seller’s earnings are directly based on sales, and therefore, their own effort. Most companies don’t cap earnings, meaning you can make as much as you put into your business.

34

Recognition like this can be hard to come by from a traditional job. For the many upsides, there’s also a number of downsides. Many direct sellers fight the stigma that they’re involved with pyramid schemes, a type of investment where paying participants recruit more participants and earn money back from the participants that join later, especially when so many companies utilize a multi-level marketing hierarchy. While there is no federal definition of a pyramid scheme, all fifty states do have laws that ban them. The Direct Sellers Association (DSA) requires that members create protections that safeguard both sellers and customers to combat the stigma. Sellers are quick to point out the legitimacy of their companies and encourage customers to do their research before buying from companies and especially before signing up as salespeople. There’s also no guarantee that investments will be recouped, let alone that any profits will be made. Reputable direct sales companies take steps to protect the investments of their sellers and help safeguard their sellers from financial loss. Companies that are part of the Direct Selling Association (DSA) have a strict Code of Ethics with requirements that member companies buy back unused inventory from sellers. However, direct sellers are still operating a business, which means it requires work. “This is not a get rich scheme. You are not going to make $10,000 your first month. If you devote time and effort, you will be successful,” says an anonymous Scentsy rep. L’Erin Stortz was quick to mention Isagenix’s income disclosure statement. “Income level achievements are dependent upon the individual's business skills, personal

35

ambition, time, commitment, activity and demographic factors and should not be construed as typical or average.” While some sellers create new business centric profiles or pages to sell their products, others rely on existing friends and networks to peddle products. Dozens of memes and viral blog posts have popped up in the last year with creators begging friends not to add them to yet another group or invite them to yet another party. Criticism for the sales strategies of some sellers is picking up as fast as companies’ sales. Sellers acknowledged that some sales reps were over the line when it came to making sales. “I personally had a bad taste in my mouth from previous experiences with pushy salespeople. Thankfully, with Scentsy, I’ve never once felt like I was selling anything,” said an anonymous Scentsy rep. And are people actually making money at this? The quick answer for most is, well, no. At least not enough to live off of exclusively. The majority of sellers (93.9% according to a 2013 survey by DSA) work their businesses part time and rely on other income to make ends meet. According to the DSA, the median income for a direct seller is just $200 a month. Of beauty brand Rodan + Fields’ consultants, just 1% of their more than 286,000 consultants made more than $28,000 annually - and only 56% made anything at all. For wellness brand Isagenix, just 21% of their members earned compensation from sales in 2016. The keys to success within direct sales isn’t unlike what’s necessary for any other business to succeed. Sellers must be consistent with scheduling parties, posting to social media, reaching out to customers for re-orders and recruiting others. Jen Bailey says “You get out of it what you invest in terms of time, training and networking.” Work and effort are key to building a business. “This is work - sometimes hard work. You get back what you put into it,” explains Randy Avila, a representative for clothing brand LuLaRoe. Resoundly, direct sellers would recommend this type of business to others. “I have seen many different personality types succeed at direct sales. The only regret I have is I didn’t start this business sooner,” shares Jen Bailey. “Find yourself a sponsor who is successful in his or her business. By partnering with a successful entrepreneur, the chances of success are much greater!” “It is the business of the 21 st Century! This isn’t just a trend but trailblazing the way for the next generation and creating the strongest legacy in families to pass down from generation to generation,” enthuses L’Erin Stortz. If you’d like to explore becoming a direct seller, the DSA offers a list of reputable companies

Or you could always ask a friend. They just might have the opportunity for you.

JOSH + TRAN WILLS

INTERVIEW BY HEATHER OKIMOTO, @HEATHEROKIMOTO PHOTOS BY: DANIELLE WEBSTER, @DANIELLEWEBSTERPHOTOGRAPHY SHOT ON LOCATION AT POKA LOLA SOCIAL CLUB, @POKALOLASOCIALCLUB

We sat down with the creative couple that has taken Denver and beyond by storm with their brilliant business ideas and stunning design installations, all while raising four kids in the city. Learn a little more about these local lovers and what song would be playing if they were headed up to bat DSM: WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU HAD TO DRINK THIS MORNING?

J: “Coffee.” T: “Lemon Water.”

DSM: WHAT UNDERWATER CREATURE DO YOU IDENTIFY WITH THE MOST?

J: “Seahorse” T: “You would be a Seahorse. I like Octopus’.“

DSM: WHERE DO YOU PERSONALLY GO TO UNWIND? J: “I hop on my motorcycle head off into the mountains or through the city on my motorcycle. It’s like my church.” T: “I’m just happy when I’m not having to run around. So if I sit on the couch and put on a crappy TV show or movie, that’s my happy place.” DSM: WHAT IS THE SECRET PROFESSION YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO TRY? J: “Stand-Up Comedian. It’s always been a dream of mine to go a an open mic night and completely bomb. But you’ve invited a few friends so it’s not completely empty and you have some people cheering.” T: “Actually to do Interior Design. I love doing it but dong it professionally would be amazing. It’s fun doing it for your own businesses but I would like to try doing it for other people.” DSM: WHAT SONG WOULD BE PLAYING IF YOU WERE WALKING UP TO BAT? J: The song that puts me in a good mood is Generique by “Miles Davis. But can you also add to mine I’d be holding whiskey and there’d be a fog machine.” T: “I always love a good Beastie Boys song. But, Soft Shock by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs ” DSM: WHAT MAKES YOU GIGGLE? J: “Honestly. Our kids. They do the silliest shit. They make us giggle but they also make us furious.” T: “Yeah the’yre funny kids.” DSM: WHAT DO YOU WISH DENVER HAD MORE OF? J: “Public Transit. Hands Down. Not more lightrail to get people into the city, but to get people around the neighborhoods.” DSM: IF YOU WERE STARTING ALL OVER AGAIN, WHAT LESSON WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOURSELF? J: “I would encourage myself to learn more about business finances. Not get a degree just more of the basics.” T: “I would trust my gut more and listen to the people that have my best interests for sure.” HEAR MORE ABOUT THIS DYNAMIC DUO AND LISTENTO THE FULL INTERVIEW AT DENVERSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
