BALEFIRE GOODS ARVADA

Many centuries ago, balefires were lite upon cliff sides, and elevated areas, to relay significant news between people of lands near and far. While such a practice may no longer exist today, at Balefire Goods, jewelry represents a fire of beautiful inspiration that connects all cultures and all people.

DENVER STYLE MAGAZINE

For Jamie Hollier, Balefire Goods was much more about a return to passions after spending time dabbling in other avenues of life. It was at a young age that she had come across the art of metalwork while spending time with her beloved grandfather in his shop. Thereafter, she stumbled upon her love of jewelry while wandering around her great aunt’s antique store. Jamie later went on to study metal-smithing and art history, in pursuit of her bliss, as an undergraduate in college. It was during this period that she began working for a local Cherry Creek artisan jewelry store that heightened her fascination with jewelry making. She soon found herself creating one-of-a-kind pieces for friends and family to cherish with so much joy and enthusiasm.

06

After her student days, Jamie describes life as having had become fairly complicated and had gotten in the way of her love of fine art and jewelry. Growing successful technology companies with her husband, having a family and a multitude of other responsibilities had put a damper on metal-smithing and jewelry making. Jamie was forced to temporarily put them on the back-burner of tomorrow. She’d found herself unfulfilled and desperately in need of an outlet for artistic expression. Through the contrast, Jamie came to realize just how much she’d really wanted to focus her undivided attention on the arts. She finally went out on a limb in 2017 and opened Balefire Goods’ doors in Olde Town Arvada. Arvada’s tight-knit community welcomed Balefire Goods with open arms and embraced the up-and-coming gallery. With support structures, a committed community and plenty of word-of-mouth, Balefire gained, and continues

to receive, incredible traction towards providing customers with beautifully handmade jewelry. “People are excited, which helps a lot” Jamie tells Denver Style Magazine. “I was also really lucky to be a part of the metal-smithing community, which really helped get the word out too.” Repeat customers of Balefire Goods simply can’t help but come back for more, with others trailing behind, after experiencing the dedicated quality in each piece. Although Jamie has been an entrepreneur since 2007, embarking on the road to success in an industry very different from the technology world has given her valuable insight on what it means to be a female entrepreneur. She describes previous endeavors as being particularly challenging with many obstacles, all while overcoming preconceived notions as a strong business woman. Creative ventures are indeed rewarding to Jamie, as she likes to be in charge of her own destiny, but it requires a lot of self-confidence and an excellent support system. She highlights how challenges, in any field, are aspects in which all entrepreneurs must conquer in fulfilling one’s vision. For example, putting yourself out there for the world to judge is routinely measured by the success of an entrepreneur’s company. Extraordinarily, the arts have been a place of movers and shakers working to lift each other up and transform the community’s diverse representation of creators. The coming to life of a vision or an idea that moves people to respond and appreciate one’s dream keeps Jamie persevering the obstacles of entrepreneurship. Giving back to the community also fuels her productive intentions in helping positively influence society. In fact, Balefire Goods donates 5% of its sales to local nonprofits and equally hosts events for similar causes. “That’s always been a driving factor for me. If everyone just gave a little more to the greater good, then our world would be very different” Jamie explains.

JAMIE HOLLIER

As Jamie leads Balefire Goods’ creative direction, quality never fails to escape her mind when finding the best pieces to showcase in-store. She meticulously buys each piece based on how connected she feels to the artist and their work’s aesthetic. Every piece is selected with the intent to render a feeling of unique personality, genuineness and entail the artisanal craft to a customer.

“I don’t carry any artist that I don’t wear,” Jamie mentions.

Her own travels, leading up to the manifestation of Balefire Goods, further enabled her to find great inspiration among pieces that she’d started to include in her personal collection of artisanal jewelry and artwork.“I traveled a lot, and I would go visit artisan jewelry exhibits” she explains. Many of the professionals currently collaborating with Balefire Goods were actually emerging

artists that Jamie had happened to come across while tracking numerous awards and recognitions in the artisan community. It was by repeatedly stepping out of her comfort zone and being exposed to new and unique artistic forms that she’d felt an intuitive nudge to center Balefire Goods as an all-inclusive gallery; sharing the works of both herself and other fellow talented artisans. With expertise and precision in mind, it’s of no wonder that Balefire Goods has been an emerging source of exceptional artisanal jewelry made by creators around the world. From U.S. artisans based in cities like Arvada, San Diego and New York, to those living in places such as Germany and Australia, various styles and creative perspectives shape the overall ethos of Balefire Goods. Nowadays, it’s much more common to find an artisanal jewelry business with one sole creator at the epicenter of its handmade pieces. However, when asked about her vision behind a communal-type marketplace, celebrating artisans from around the world,

Jamie excitedly remarks,“If I was doing only my own work I’d go crazy! I want to help other artists.” Balefire Goods has made it a priority to work with a wide-range of skilled artisans with individual approaches to the craft of handmade jewelry. Carrying and representing artisans from diverse aesthetic and material backgrounds assists in catering to different customers’ needs and emphasizes the company’s unique stance as a force in the jewelry industry. Balefire Goods also distinctly exudes the premise of jewelry as being an art form for any and all to enjoy. The accessibility and affordability of quality handmade pieces are important aspects that Balefire Goods works hard in upholding to the utmost degree. Regardless of taste, Jamie’s goal of this premise comes from her desire to create something that everyone can understand to be “cool and amazing” as art in an industry dominated by fast fashion and singularity. What many may not realize is that mainstream factory created jewelry has been known to usher several consequences that impact the

welfare of the planet, animals and society at large. From environmental issues, poor ethical practices and the lack of authenticity, today’s costume jewelry is on the rise with no slowing down. “People are just hungry for an alternate” Jamie explains. Luckily, those looking for more sentimental and rare jewelry to incorporate into their wardrobe have Balefire Goods’ wide-selection of carefully thought out and designed pieces to help fill this void. The company wholeheartedly believes in continuing the unique and special tradition of crafting artwork made to wear. “Artisan jewelry is part of the slow fashion movement,” Jamie says, “people don’t want something to throw away, but want to invest in quality.” Creating handmade goods with great care and passion instills deeper meaning between artisans and customers who celebrate the art of jewelry making. It’s always been Jamie’s hope that all customers can truly feel a spark of joy while wearing pieces that they’ve invested in; knowing that they’ve also contributed to the greater good. The actual creation and designing process is another fascinating aspect in which Balefire Goods hopes to engage and connect with their valuable customers. Whether pieces are designed for an artist’s specific collection, custom making or even Balefire Goods’ Kindle brand of custom commitment jewelry, it’s the company’s biggest motivation to build pieces that stand the test of time. With each artisan’s personalized touch embodied in their creations, Jamie says, “custom work gives constraint, which is a great way to be unique.” This guides the artisan in telling customers’

stories in ways that are especially significant to them through each piece. “That is a huge inspiration and honor to be a part of customers’ stories” she explains. Just how the artisans of Balefire Goods uncover inspiration when creating jewelry for their own lines can vary between crafters. For Jamie, she finds inspiration practically “all over the place”. She lets materials and several aesthetics speak to her, as her style is known to change on a whim. Different outfits also tend to impress new designs upon Jamie’s creative imagination when thinking about what she should handmake next. Depending on one’s style, she articulates how classic pieces of clothing are always wonderfully accented with amazing jewelry. The designs at Balefire Goods are not necessarily trendy, but are incredibly stylish and fashionable for anyone looking to elevate their look. To Jamie, pairing a black dress with Balefire Goods’ very own Oropopo’s signature statement pieces, inspired by the cross between modern, Native American, classic Western and New Mexican cultures. “A great outfit is great, but jewelry is like icing on a great cake” she states. When asked about her favorite creations, made by herself and her team, Jamie explains that she is drawn to any pieces that match with what she might be doing while sporting her jewelry. The “Lines Bracelet” and “Sunset Pendent” are among her most loved pieces of her current intricate selection. She also finds BoldB’s artisanal array of fine jewelry to be perfect additions to wear for the beach, while Yed Omi’s works of art allow anyone to take delight in wearing them with essentially any outfit. So what’s to come for Balefire Goods’ foreseeable future? For Jamie, she honestly doesn’t know exactly, but does want to continue to grow and maintain beneficial change in her local community of Olde Town Arvada. Rooting for the underdog has always been important to her, while constantly looking for ways to do things better. Whether it’s hosting educational classes and events, giving back to local nonprofits, or doing more for all of the different projects they engage with, Balefire Goods will forever want the absolute best for its customers. “I’m so lucky to be doing work that has an impact,” Jamie says,

“All ships rise together, so I want to help other ships rise.”

CBD may be the new health, beauty, and wellness buzzword, but understanding if it’s safe for you and your loved ones comes with finding products that fit your lifestyle, application, and intake preferences. Denver Style Contributing Writer, Wren Duggan, got to the bottom of our basic questions about using nature’s not so new stress reliever.

THE ABC’S OF

CBD PHOTOS COURTESY OF VERITAS FARMS WRITTEN BY WREN DUGGAN @wrenniebird

Cannabidiol, known more commonly as CBD, has become all the rage across the country over the last few years. CBD products are everywhere: dispensaries, flea markets, and even small boutiques are doting over CBD products to their customers. Chances are you’ve probably seen 1 or 2 businesses selling Cannabidiol in recent months, but you also might be unsure about what it really does. While CBD is becoming increasingly popular for people and pets, we wanted to take a deeper look into what CBD does, how it’s used, and where you can get if from.

So, what is CBD? Cannabidiol is a chemical compound found in marijuana. Unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive, making it one of the more popular natural remedies intended to assist with ailments and mental health disorders. Recent studies show that CBD can help relieve chronic pain, turn down the volume on anxiety, and assist with gut health without the mind-altering affects associated with THC and some medications. Additionally, although CBD has been proven to be effective for a multitude of conditions, some of the most celebrated health benefits are for anxiety/stress, pain and tension, sleep, anti-inflammatory properties, and overall wellness.

Many people are drug tested for work, and there’s a lot of debate surrounding whether or not CBD can be utilized under these circumstances. CBD comes in various forms:

Full Spectrum CBD products do have trace and legal amounts of THC in them, so it’s not recommended to take if drug tested.

There are isolate based products available that are TCH Free, which would be a safer route. Additionally, products certified “THC-free” fall below the 0.3% THC limit, so it is unlikely for CBD to show up on a drug test. However, the results of a drug test cannot be guaranteed unless the product is certified at 0% THC. Currently, you do not need a specific license to sell CBD products in the state of Colorado. You do, however, need standard wholesale or resale licenses that are specific to each state, on the condition that the CBD products are sourced from industrial hemp and contain less than the 0.3% THC limit. The usage of CBD is a very personal decision. It’s important to remember that CBD impacts each person’s body differently, which should be taken into consideration when

CBD has become more widely available since the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill. It can be found in both retail stores, online, and in brick and mortar shops or restaurants, including food and beverage establishments. Finding the right product, especially online, can be tricky to navigate as there are a plethora of products available. Oils, salves, lotions, bath bombs, and gummies are just some of the many CBD products you can choose from. Finding a product that has total transparency of their ingredients and is both 3rd party tested and shows their COA’s is an important step in helping find the right CBD product for you.

choosing the right CBD product for your needs. Many people use CBD as part of their daily regimen to benefit overall health and wellness. However, using CBD is never as cut and dry as using it in replacement of medications or another supplement. CBD can be very effective as a standalone solution, while other times it is best used in conjunction with other medications or supplements. For example, recent findings show that many people are able to use fewer anti-inflammatory medications when using an effective dose of CBD. Remember: results vary from person to person and are anecdotal. When purchasing CBD oil, it is best to choose a reputable company that provides organically grown hemp-derived CBD, full-spectrum CBD oil, because this ensures that you will receive the benefits of the hemp plant in its entirety, and one that is cruelty free, THC-free, and free of any chemicals, preservatives, or emulsifiers.

However, many parents have had tremendous success using CBD to address various conditions in children like anxiety, ADHD, stress, and epilepsy. There have been several studies regarding treatment for epileptic seizures and many more studies and trials are expected in the near future. Dosing varies greatly depending on the individual and the severity of the condition CBD is being used for. CBD is used to treat a host of medical problems, and the benefits include, but aren’t limited to: anxiety relief, pain management, improving symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), helping improve sleep quality, anti-seizure, immune support, weight loss, anti-seizure, and anti-acne. Additionally, CBD acts as a neuroprotective which is important for individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), and Parkinson’s disease. CBD is a popular industry in the state of Colorado but is also getting lots of attention nationwide. CBD’s associations with wellness come from the natural remedies and health benefits it provides. MEET THE MAKERS OF

GLENN+GLENN APPAREL

HILLARY GLENN RILEY + JILLIAN GLENN ALTMAN @ g l e n n a n d g l e n n a p p a r e l • w w w. g l e n n g l e n n a p p a r e l . c o m

In a world dominated by polyester, environmental woes and fast fashion, it can be quite difficult, and tiresome, scoping out top quality garments that are affordable in nature. Gems may be hard to find, however look no further than the city of Boulder, Colorado. Glenn+Glenn is one of Colorado’s newest apparel brands hitting the local fashion scene, led by sister-duo Hillary Glenn Riley and Jillian Glenn Altman. Taking destiny into their own hands, and finally fulfilling their childhood dream, they launched Glenn+Glenn in 2017. “We’d talked about it for a decade, and I think that we’d always had the idea to do it, but it was a risky thing to do” Jillian explains. While both of the Glenn sisters have had an extensive career in fashion, the arts and business, it wasn’t until the fruition of Glenn+Glenn that they had conspired their efforts together to create a fashion line. Hillary began her career in design while working for Diane von Furstenberg in New York City, and later returned to Colorado to design for leading lifestyle

“We wanted better products... I think that we as consumers had minimal options” Hillary

DENVER STYLE MAGAZINE

explains.

30

The sisters also noticed how inexpensive clothing simply didn’t last, while highend designers made incredible garments out of exceptional fabric, but just weren’t universally accessible. Filling the void, being one of their main business pillars, has resulted in Glenn+Glenn finding common ground in bringing high quality and affordability together for the modern woman to truly enjoy long lasting pieces. Having great attention to detail has proved to be one of the company’s antidotes to this obstacle. “We’re not trying to change people, but we want you to invest in your clothing so that you can build it season after season” Jillian says. Because of this, incredible design and fabrics are key style ingredients in all of Glenn+Glenn’s apparel . “Our goal is to produce and act as sustainable

and performance companies. Contrastingly, Jillian had set her sights on corporate branding, art and photography as a contract designer for numerous clients and brands. After years of helping foster the dreams of others, it came time for the sisters to branch out of their well-established careers, and into the world of entrepreneurship. “It’s great working for yourself, and seeing your own dreams come to life,” Hillary says regarding the rewards of being an entrepreneur in the fashion industry. Having their own brand and creative direction, Jillian further states how, “There is no compromise for

the design you want.”

Interestingly, the sisters’ dissatisfaction of the current climate of the fashion industry actually initiated the existence of Glenn+Glenn. Poor quality and the rise of fast fashion, consisting of many dupes and knock-offs, were driving forces that pushed Hillary and Jillian to believe that there was a better way to reach the modern woman. They felt that the quality and price gap, in an ever-changing industry, needed to be filled.

as possible, utilizing excess fabric and avoiding over-production.” Jillian explains. Glenn+Glenn even reuse scrap material to make beautiful head scarves in an effort to reduce waste and enforce efficiency. The beauty of having sustainability as a founding element, right from the start, steers the business towards a more productive future. This clearly demonstrates the businesses innovative approach in a time when many other well-known brands are just now stepping into the realm of sustainability. Being a smaller line, at the moment, has also granted them the luxury to focus on sowing the seeds of positive environmental change for the future of fashion. “If we want to be around for the long run, we need to take the time to make the right decisions in the beginning.” Hillary proclaims. At the moment, Glenn+Glenn is a flourishing Online business with an ever-growing social media presence. Instagram and Facebook have proven to be major drivers for their budding

success, allowing more and more fashion-forward customers to find them so easily. They even have been hosting several trunk shows, in Denver and Austin, to showcase their items in a way customers can experience the brand’s quality and style. The sisters may say that they are just barely out of the gate, however it is clear that Glenn+Glenn is a refreshingly unique apparel line in an outdoorsy and active Colorado. The company’s tailored, modern and classic approach conveys a contemporary style in which contrasts with the usual outer and activewear business counterparts in the region. Both Hillary and Jillian find inspiration for their pieces, embodying the Urban Sophisticate, through a multitude of avenues such as street style, high fashion, celebrities, architecture and even food. “It’s sort of all around us” Jillian says. Glenn+Glenn’s creative direction is continuously developed through Hillary and Jillian’s personal styles and what they’ve always been

AD VE R T OR I AL

attracted to aesthetically. Hillary believes that the brand’s neutral color palette and clean look help bring minimalism to a fashion atmosphere currently filled with distracting patterns. They’ve found this to be equally important when designing garments to flatter many body shapes and helping the modern woman feel confident and chic day or night. Some essential pieces that the sisters say that the modern woman should always have in her wardrobe consist of basics that can either be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion. Jillian finds layering tanks perfect to wear day and night, for travel and under most pieces. Having a great blouse or sweater, such as the Como Shell, is also excellent to wear with a blazer or cami. “It has a basic silhouette with a modern twist,” Hillary explains, “We built our collection around essentials.” Regardless of the season, or current trend, Glenn+Glenn garments are timeless, and are made to last. The sisters view their scaling line as a “launching pad” for one to begin incorporating quality and tailored basics with what already resides in their closet. Their shared hope and intention is to have every piece that they create have longevity even as trends change through time. Each Glenn+Glenn collection begins with creative ideas, color palettes, current trends and even mood boards. “I start sketching designs out, talk through them and narrow them down” Hillary articulates describing the process of designing new pieces for each season. The sisters proceed to look at all of their ideas as a whole, while also making sure that they are able to equally stand alone. Once a vision is in motion, prototypes of fabrics are assessed until each piece is perfected. The task of creating new designs for collections may be tedious, but Hillary and Jillian’s hands-on approach and close relationship with their manufacturing team in New York all help bring forth incredible pieces into manifestation. Spring 2019’s Fife Collection is a perfect example of how Glenn+Glenn are constantly elevating the ethos of the brand. From pops of color with the blush Avery skirt, to the Burke dress in the style Surf, this collection exudes such beautiful transitional ease into the spring season. Just as mentioned earlier, Hillary and Jillian both made it a priority, as with any collection, to extend the life of anyone’s current wardrobe while embracing Fife’s gorgeous new additions. Their versatility opens one up to one’s own creative imagination, as they can wear all of these pieces timelessly.

“It’s fun to see how other people style them with their own accessories and personal style” the sisters both say.

Even though Hillary claims she is not a fan of many prints, she absolutely adores their new Alyster blouse in both graphite and mermaid print. It’s unique V-neck silhouette, delicate fabric and relaxed sleeves entail simple elegance found within all of Glenn+Glenn’s creations. She also speaks of the importance of “trying to find the right balance” between garments. For example, some Glenn+Glenn customers may adore flowy-type textures, while others enjoy a more structured fit. For Jillian, she finds one of her favorite pieces from the collection to be the Eliot dress. “The structured dresses are pieces that I’d wear regularly, when it gets warmer” Jillian describes. She finds this dress, in particular, to be perfect during the day at work, and is quickly transition-able for evening events.

When asked about what the future holds for Glenn+Glenn, the sisters foresee growth of the line. Offering more items and producing greater inventory, including jackets, sweaters and more, excite both Jillian and Hillary for what’s in store. The coming expansion will also bring year-round collections, helping separate the spring, summer, fall and winter seasons. When asked about what kind of legacy and impact the Glenn sisters desire to leave upon the fashion world, they agree that keeping true to their signature clean and timeless style will forever be a priority. “This is not a quick turn on fashion” they say. In essence, upholding smart and efficient business values, maintaining quality and creating long-lasting pieces will continue to take Glenn+Glenn to greater heights.

Denver’s endless sunshine and vibrant nightlife makes for an ideal location to host an unforgettable bachelorette weekend. Food and lifestyle blogger, Jaime Lopez of South on Broadway, hosted a stunning celebratory weekend for her cousin and soon-to-be bride, Brianna.

JAIME’S TIPS

to planning an epic Bachelorette Weekend

Ladies came from across the country to celebrate and kicked off with an outdoor bridal shower/cocktail party. The shower was welcoming and laid back but of course, stylish. Simply Petals created arrangements with blooms in shades of, pink, cream and burgundy. A serve yourself cocktail bar adorned in florals welcomed guests. Guests snapped photos in front of the blooming backdrop before laughing their way through games honoring the bride! Base Coat Nail Salon provided burgundy lacquers as a takeaway treat for each guest. Creating a classy and chic bachelorette was my main goal. The color palette was a mix of black, white, pink and pops of gold. Additionally, ditching the cliché phallic accessories made things feel instantly more sophisticated. As a nod to the Mile High City, I worked with local Colorado brands like Rowdy Mermaid, Apothecary Co. & Manoffato Gift boxes & Blooms to curate welcome baskets for each guest. The primary location of the weekend was at the ultra-hip Halcyon Cherry Creek. Daytime activities included a morning sweat-sesh at Yoga Pod, brunch and soaking in the sun on the trendy rooftop pool. The bride tribe dressed in black (Paisley and Park and Fab’rik) to accentuate the bride’s fitted white dress. To commemorate the big night, a photo shoot was coordinated pre-dinner with Redwood Sage Photos. --vThis was a great way to capture the Bride Tribe all glammed up before hitting the town. Gold tattoos were the perfect insta-worthy accessory.

WORDS WISE FROM THE

JUDITH BOYD @stylecrone www.stylecrone.com

Spring is a time for resurgence and activity. We asked our Words from the Wise Contributor, and local Denver Blogger, Judith Boyd of StyleCrone.com about spring routines, spring flings, and timeless fashion. PHOTO BY: WREN DUGGAN @wrenniebird

46

W H AT D O Y O U C H A N G E ABOUT YOUR SPRING ROUTINE? As the chill of the days subsides, I find myself spending more time outside. I walk around the park more frequently in anticipation of the flowering trees, the tulips, and the awakening of the new season. As though reflecting the softer colors of my surroundings, I look for lipstick colors that are lighter and softer. I begin to start thinking about transitioning to spring ensembles and wearing lighter layers and open toed shoes.

WHERE DO YOU GO F O R I N S P I R AT I O N ?

W H AT P I E C E S O F CLOTHING DO PEOPLE U N D E R E S T I M AT E T H E MOST?

Of course that would be headwear. Hats add so much to my life. They are conversation starters. They get you a better seat at a restaurant. They add the final touch to any ensemble. They can change my mood for the better with their unique and interesting personalities. They offer endless possibilities for self expression and creativity. They are my favorite accessory and they enrich my life on a daily basis.

Inspiration comes from everywhere in my environment. Nature, museums, travel, movies, shop windows, style bloggers and Instagrammers. I am constantly captivated by the women that Ari Seth Cohen features on his blog Advanced Style, and the women that I see everywhere on my adventures on any day of the week or year. It is important to be constantly curious and open to new ideas, or a novel shift on the old.

WHY DO YOU TAKE THE TIME TO GET DRESSED UP?

Dressing up is a form of self expression, creativity, and meditation for me. It centers me and I see it as art, like a painting or sometimes a sculpture. It contributes to my well being and quality of life. It also enhances my self confidence and my focus. It has become a daily practice and an integral part of my lifestyle. Dressing up tells a daily story, and is a component of my identity and who I am. PHOTO BY: DANIEL NOLAN @daniel_a_nolan
