In the four issues this year, we’ve crisscrossed the state to shop local everywhere from downtown Denver to Durango to Summit County. We’ve featured movers and shakers who are shaping retail and creating spaces to promote collaboration and community. otherhood is busy. With six kids at five schools, we’re running all over town for sports, clubs, friends, and commitments. During the winter months though, we intentionally slow it all down with the purpose of reconnecting as a family.

MEET THE: BLOGGER / PAINTER / CREATIVE
LAURA KRUDENER AMONG THE C O L O R S
Multitalented artist Laura Krudener fell in love with Denver’s RiNo Art District long before it became the thriving, hip scene it is today. Since then, her paintings have received national recognition, appearing on the cover of NYC Cottages & Garden’s magazine and in homes and workplaces throughout New York and Colorado. Krudener’s largest painting to date, “Forever Colliding” was acquired by the City of Denver for their permanent collection at the Colorado Convention Center. In addition to painting, Krudener now runs a blog and a newly opened gallery/event space, which was featured in the 2016 September issue of Elle magazine, and has received recognition in Westword’s 100 Colorado Creatives. Krudener grew up in a very small town in rural North Carolina, where from an early age she loved making things. “When I was in Girl Scouts, I actually took home the Instructor’s Book of Badges and spent my entire summer completing every art and craft project at home. By the end of summer, I had earned enough badges to cover both sides of my sash.” The idea for the name Among the Colors came when Krudener was considering a script tattoo to represent what the creative process meant to her. “The words come from one of my favorite poets Rainer Marie Rilke, ‘Painting takes place among the colors. One has to leave them alone completely, so that they can settle the matter
among themselves.’ This quote speaks to the freedom that comes from the creative process, the surrender that happens when we are completely in the zone. This freedom of expression is what inspires me to make things - art, food, even they way I get dressed in the morning. This creative freedom is what Among the Colors is all about.” Krudener’s blog features weekly original content focusing on art, fashion and wellness. “With my background in art and fashion, I wanted a platform to discuss my passion in these areas as well as my affection for cooking seasonal gluten free recipes, my love for the wellness communities, and my travel adventures.” She is very selective about who and what she features in her blog. Her love for fashion led her to work in textile design and trend forecasting for over ten years before starting her blog. “I have always loved following designers and brands’ stories and trends. Textiles and trends tell a story, they have a history. I feel what we wear gives us an opportunity to be part of that story 1 7 and in turn,
express our own narrative.” Krudener describes her style as Contemporary Bohemian explaining, “It is both a style and a mindset of following your own artistic expression of living life. Contemporary Bohemian is the attitude of the modern creative who puts their own personal expression on whatever they do.” When Krudener enrolled for undergraduate college at Appalachian State University, she had an extensive portfolio of acrylic paintings and drawings and chose to double major in Painting and Dance, two things she started at the age of three. “Those first two years of school I lived in the art studios at night and took every class I could get my hands on that had to do with drawing and painting and spent the rest of my time dancing and choreographing.” The following year Krudener took her passion to the next level and moved across the country to attend San Francisco Art Institute’s BFA program for painting at the age of 19. After completion, she started her Master’s Program in Painting at the San Francisco Art Institute. “The program I took was three years and by the end I was painting in a style very similar to how I work still today.” During her schooling, Krudener also spent time living in Boulder, CO with her boyfriend (now husband) and would show her art anywhere and everywhere. It wasn’t until she finished her Master’s in 2009 that she got her first real gallery show with Space Gallery in Denver. She then gained representation by Plus Gallery and fell in love with the creative energy of RiNo, which led her to get a studio at TAXI in 2011. Four years later, Krudener was able to quit her office design job of over 10 years and pursue her creative work full time. “Having worked with designers and brands all over the country and various design teams, I was really eager to become my own creative director and be the one calling all the shots.” Krudener built up her blog and continued to work hard at pursuing her passions to the point where she was able to open her very own art gallery. ATC DEN opened exactly two years after she started her blog, which Krudener says was a complete coincidence, “I was going to plan a blog anniversary party, but instead was fortunate enough to have my gallery space ready to open right at that two-year mark. The grand opening party was one of the most monumental days of my life, we were overwhelmed with support from our friends and the community at large!” ATC DEN will operate as a mixed-use creative space for art exhibits, workshops, photo and video shoots, as well as private event rental. Krudener explains, “It is the brick and mortar expression of my blog Among the Colors; a creative space that is a contemporary art gallery for featuring local and national artists, both emerging and established.” With a curatorial focus around the relationship between art and wellness, these exhibitions will also feature a different interactive community event each month related to the artwork being showcased. “Starting my own business as a blogger and now as a gallery owner of ATC DEN, in addition to my fine art career has been the biggest adventure of my life. Art has taken me everywhere, from a small town in North Carolina across the country to California, and landed me in the middle of Denver’s growing art community in RiNo.” Krudener invites everyone to visit her blog and her gallery to partake in the passion and thoughtfulness she has imbued them with, with the hope to enrich and inspire the art of everyday life.
“It is really important to me that Among the Colors be 100% authentic to what I love and believe in. I have worked hard to find and collaborate with brands, people, and products that I want to support and uplift.”

Buzzing through the core of Denver’ historic Baker community, South Broadway is one of the city’s biggest access ways. Along the one-way street is a peppering of dining establishments, hipster coffee shops, and eclectic businesses of all kinds. The true heartbeat of the neighborhood, however, is a force of females making the avenue home to their brick and mortar establishments. From freshly minted gifts shops to colt classic storefronts, Denver Style Magazine caught up with a few of girl bosses revving up the South Broadway boutique scene.
Problem solver and do-gooder, Erika Righter started Hope Tank through a passionate lens. “I was a social worker and I wanted people in the community to feel connected to the problems we were addressing while feeling like they could make a difference, even if they didn’t have lots of money,” she states. This notion and inspiration began Hope Tank, a gift store which partners with people who have a commitment to giving back. Every item sold at Hope Tank goes to support a different cause. Its mission at the core is to inspire real change.

Hope Tank comes with a clan. Whether that is all of their incredible nonprofit partners, the other business owners on the strip, or the diverse customer base that shop the street - there is true sense of positivity radiating from the retailer. And how could there not be? Shopping this small business is a direct correlation to the betterment of our communities. It’s no surprise that Righter’s advise to other aspiring female entrepreneurs is simply to be kind, generous, and authentic. She’s also a strong believer in introducing yourself to everyone and finding out why they love what they do. Best of all, “Don’t worry about what you should be doing, and just do the damn thing!” Keep your eyes peeled for even more love and light to come from Hope Tank. They are soon launching an ecommerce site before Christmas and are currently cooking up some crazy-fun small business collaborations.

There’s no denying that the Denver circle of creative, good architects has significantly grown within the past decade. It’s become a staple for markets and boutiques to feature everything local and lovey. Cindy Gamel, owner of new comer, Mixed Up Gifts opened the location after realizing she could begin a business that would combine her passion for music and art, and also support other small businesses, artists, and makers. So what is it about this particular space that makes it so uniquely special? Mixed Up provides creative, contemporary, and often quirky alternatives to the outdated gift basket concept. “When people in my shop audibly react to my products - it means I hit that nail on the head and made someone’s day,” Jennings says. Though currently wearing title has ‘new kid on the block’, Gamel already feels right at home in her mecca of strong and original businesswomen. “Everyone seems super supportive and generous.” A theme that rings true for just about everyone that calls South Broadway home. That, and the sentiment describing small boutique ownership, “It’s certainly tough, but you can do it. Just follow your gut instincts, and make sure you have a reliable support network in place.” Mixed Up Gifts might just be your new source for distinctive and irreplaceable pieces. Make your way into the shop and tell Jennings hi. The sky’s the limit. Her future aspirations include hosting art shows on specific themes. Her first will probably require the use of cassette tapes – don’t miss out on over-the-top imaginative fun. Self-proclaimed ‘crazy plant lady’ and local innovator Lynn Flanagan-Till wanted to create a shop based on telling the story behind plants. Rosehouse by definition is a space for living apothecary. “My “aha” moment was a couple of years ago, while looking for live plants to use in the opening night workshop for “The Power of Poison” exhibit at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. I found that the garden centers and nurseries had lists of what plants were poisonous to cats and dogs and provided basic plant care guides, but didn’t have information about the historical or medicinal uses of the plants,” she recalls.

Thus began a unique and useful concept. Rosehouse certainly fills a gap that otherwise would have left knowledge unknown. Building this leaves Flanagan-Till just about as content as they come. After all, she literally brought her dream shop to life. She boasts that amazing plants and lovely people surround her days. This in-itself makes it a must-see. She, like so many others, only has praise for her peers and the avenue they call home. As she recites, “I grew up on South Broadway shopping for vintage clothes, books, records and going to shows, so it’s kind of cool that Rosehouse is now a little part of the street’s lineage. I most appreciate how supportive and helpful other shop owners and their employees have been, as a new store there is a rough learning curve that has been eased by the South Broadway community.” Looking to find your own little slice of boutique ownership bliss? Flanagan-Till says to go for it. “Start before you think you are ready, don’t be afraid to be yourself and bring something new to the table.” If horticulture is your jam, this space is for you. Rosehouse hopes to become the ‘plant nerd hub of Denver’. They recently started rolling out community classes and soon, the conception of new product lines will begin.

FANCY TIGER JAIME CRAFTS JENNINGS 59 Broadway
If you build it, they will come. A sentiment that rang true for local crafter Jaime Jennings who repeatedly noticed a hole in the market for unique artisan supplies. As she explains, “I was crafting a lot on my own and there wasn’t anywhere in town that carried the new, modern supplies I was craving. Once I had the idea of opening a craft supply shop, I couldn’t let it go.” And thankfully she didn’t. Fancy Tiger Crafts has become a staple among the South Broadway stroll. For eleven years, the shop has given new life to local creatives. On that same token, Fancy Tiger Crafts has been the heartbeat behind for fostering relationships and spearheading a new wave of jobs. “I’ve gotten to hire some of the most inspiring people. One my greatest joys is seeing what our community makes on a daily basis.” While the stretch of shops has evolved, Jennings motto stays true: Believe in yourself and welcome collaboration. She notes that the best part of the community isn’t just its wonderful location, but the opportunity to host events and work along side other fervent business owners. She is continually inspired by the progress that has taken place since first signing a lease in 2006. If you thought Fancy Tiger Crafts had already hit its stride, watch out. Jennings is taking it to another level with two books being published this year. Her most recent focus has revolved around building the brand on a national level with an original line of patterns, and now books. The journey is far from over. When opportunity presents itself, don’t stray away. This holds true for SEWN, owner, Kirsten Coplans, who originally started the brand in a partnership. In Coplans own words, “I met my original business partner Jil Cappuccio when she had her small shop on Ogden Street and we both were sewing our clothing lines. We figured we were better together than we were doing our own things separately, so we started SEWN.”

Since its commencement, Cappucio has moved back to the Bay Area. This shift placed Coplan solely behind the store with even greater prospect for growth. There are over twentyfive local artists who sell their goods in the South Broadway shop (Cappucio’s handmade clothing included) and more local talent being added to its roster routinely. “This allows SEWN to really present something new during each shopping experience,” Coplans describes. SEWN isn’t the only bullet point on Coplans resume; she owns two other boutiques. However, there is something decisively special about SEWN’s setting. “The supportive community. The area is known for its independently owned businesses, so people shop here because of this. I have met some wonderful, hard working shop owners who care about the neighborhood and go out of their way to be compassionate,” she raves. With experience and an optimistic outlook on the future, there’s no doubt SEWN will continue to thrive. Colpans advice to hopeful business owners is to always follow your heart, doing what you love will sustain your business vision and reward you a hundred times over.

EVA GEMME
Eva Gemme is a vintage lover to say the least. Her love affair for all things eclectic and antique brought her to the idea of Thrift Space, a collection of fresh local art, decor, furniture, clothing, books and so much more at affordable prices. As Gemme recounts, “I just wanted to share my finds with the world.”

Displaying these treasures for customers has certainly paid off. The establishment is glowing with success. However, it’s the tiny moments within the boutique that really make Gemme’s heart flourish. “Seeing how happy our customers are when they find that something special. Or watching someone in the shop reminisce over things their grandmother once had. Those are my biggest rewards.” Thrift Space has found an extra cozy home and welcome more and more ambitious conceptualist to join in the fun. While the community does already offer a great variety, Gemme is excited by how many new spaces are filling in and expanding the street’s shopping lengths. In her opinion, if you have a dream, you can make it come true. Doors open all the time, we just need to pay close attention. Stay on the look out for more shopping opportunities to arise from Thrift Space. They are looking to expand online soon, making it easier than ever to purchase your sought after vintage goods.

Intrigue Boutique owners Amanda Larrimer and Jill Newton first met and become friends at a small college in Ohio. When Amanda moved to Denver after college, Jill visited and then quickly followed.
The two discovered they worked well together, enjoyed creating together, and loved cultivating style in each other and others. The resulting brainchild was Intrigue Boutique’s first location in the Sunnyside neighborhood of Denver, which opened in November 2015. The shop features limited quantities of unique, affordable, and elevated basics that fit into the on-the-go wardrobe needs of the Denver woman. The ladies were kind enough to join us for happy hour at The Pig and the Sprout behind Union Station for a drink to share what’s next.
DSM: What was the first thing you had to drink this morning? A: Coffee, with a little bit of cream. J: Same. DSM: What underwater creature do you identify with the most? A: Dolphin.
DSM: What makes you giggle? J: I feel like I’m not allowed to say. A: I know... J: On the day to day? I guess

DSM: Where do you go to unwind? A:Ooh. Yoga J: Home. Just home. Away from everyone. DSM: What is the secret profession you’ve always wanted to try? A: Interior Designer. J: A stylist so I’m guess I’m kinda doing it. Or when I was real little, it was, like, a veterinarian. DSM: What’s your hype song when you approach the baseball plate? A: Salt-N-Pepa “Shoop” J: Oh! “Big Poppa” by The Notorious B.I.G. “I love it when you call me big
poppa..” Only because of “Hardball.”
A: My dogs. When they fall down, it’s funny. They kinda are clumsy, they trip coming in and out of the back door, fall on the wood floors. DSM: What do you wish Denver had more of? A: Public pools! J: What? We have pools. They’re clean... A: I just feel there’s not that many though. J: Stay weird, Denver, and never change.
DSM: If you were starting all over again, what advice would you give yourself? J: We waited so long to start… I don’t know.

A: Be patient with yourself. J: Yeah, be patient with the curveballs that comes with it. Not in knowing your partner but in how you’re going to react as an individual. DSM: What was the last random act of kindness that you received? A: That I received? J: Amanda picked me up today! Oh, you said random. A: Someone probably let me in traffic. J: Someone bought me a ticket to go into the bar last Friday! A: People are nice in Denver. DSM: What are you looking forward to the most in 2018? J; Oh that’s an easy one. A: We have a big one... J: We’re opening up a second store! A: It’s
