You only get one chance to attend your senior prom, so plan to make it the best night of your high school life! Below is my Perfect Prom Countdown to a night you will always remember: Start by going with someone fun; whether it be a boy, a girl or a group of friends. Whether you want a dress that’s short or long, trendy or classic, don’t forget to shop early in order to give yourself time to have it hemmed or tailored. Nothing is wrong with a pair of sky high heels but try a pair of metallic tennis shoes for dancing the night away and I guarantee your feet will thank you. For the guys who want to have some fun with their outfit, try pairing a fun sneaker with your tux! Don’t make the mistake of over-accessorizing! A small pair of sparkly, dangle earrings or a faux diamond bracelet can go a long way in completing your look. Stay one step ahead of finicky Colorado spring weather and bring a fun, fur-lined jacket to dinner. Once prom is over, it will look even cuter with a pair of skinny jeans at the after-prom bash.
Book your glam appointments for a tan, hair and makeup, for the day of prom. Take a few magazine pics of styles you like into your appointment to share your vision. Choose a small bag that fits all of your essentials: phone, tickets to prom, gum, credit card, money and a few quick beauty pick me ups, like lipstick, blush and hydration mist. Since reservations can fill up quickly, especially for large prom parties, book your restaurant in advance. If you are taking a limo, book that too. Have a great Prom! Dressed Up: Ball gown, $398; Soignee Elegant Attire. Sandals, $32.99, Bracelet, $9.99; Angel’s Shoe Store. Earrings, $120; Mariel Boutique. Clutch, $30.75; Rags Consignments. Dressed Down: Ball gown, $398; Soignee Elegant Attire. Tennis Shoes, $105; Ruby Jane Boutique. Jean Jacket, $75; Hailee Grace. Clutch, $33, Cuff Bracelet, $28, Choker, $28, Earrings, $28; Starlet.

MEET THE ECO DESIGNER OF
EQUILLIBRIUM CLOTHING
DEB HENRIKSEN, LEED AP BD+C
Authentic, philanthropic, environmentally conscious, are just a few adjectives that come to mind when meeting Deb Henriksen, who leads with her inner- sole and organically lead to the “lifestyle brand,” Equillibrium. Deb has always found herself in male dominated arenas and has thrived in them! Deb moved from Chicago in the early 90’s to Summit County. As an avid skateboarder for over 26 years now, Deb found Summit County USA, to be the canvas for her realization. Her ethical lifestyle brand which also represented her personal style, timeless and rocker chic, needed to be a part of Denver’s growing skateboard family. The conception of Equillibrium was born in 1998 and the awakening of conscious consumption through a timeless brand with multi-dimensional meaning, is seen in each garment Deb produces began. During the birth of Equillibrium, Deb was working in Hazardous Waste Management. The combination of seeing first-hand the in-balance between living and conscious living, gave Deb
that extra push to make sure her brand was always using organic products and materials and followed a zero-waste philosophy. Every garment designed is made with an intention. The left-over pieces have been made into key chains, zip wallets and more. The conscious in order to be the environmentally aware fashion brand. Deb never purposely sources leather. Rather, she has made connections with a few neighboring companies and receives their scrap pieces that otherwise would have no use for their original purpose. She has coined this process “Up-Cycle Goat Series”, of which you can watch the story on the Equillibrium You Tube Channel. The stickers Deb gave me for my children, were even made by extra Vinyl. Continuing to give back by following zero fall out philosophy, Deb and Equillibrium have been philanthropic activists for decades. 10% of Equillibriums gross sales are donated to reputable organizations. You can find the list of organizations under “Activism” on Equillibrium’s website. Deb believes 95% of change is human

behavior, “you are either part of the problem or part of the solution!” During our interview, I noticed Deb only had a desk lamp on. When her husband, Ben, came in the office to take a picture of us, he turned on the overhead lights and promptly turned them off. The task lighting method, is simply another conscious way of life for this environmentally aware fashion designer. In the next five years, Deb Henriksen sees herself contributing even more to sustainability in every way possible through her brand, Equillibrium. Although Deb isn’t searching to be a household name, visions of being one is certainly an exciting prospect. Tackling this dream will only be done through Equillibrium’s belief and definition, being in balance and tackling the environment one garment at a time. You can read and learn more about your footprint, how to become more environmentally aware when buying your next piece of apparel and during your daily routine on Equillibrium’s website.

SHOPPING, EATING, AND EXPLORING
WRITTEN BY: AMBER VAN COURT @amberbutbetter • PHOTOGRAPHED BY: KATIE LANGLEY, KT LANGLEY PHOTOGRAPHY @kt_langley The Highlands is a hip area surrounded by beautiful 1900’s homes and new construction making it a dynamic neighborhood popular with the Denver crowd. There are local restaurants, bars, breweries, and boutique shopping, all in walking distance in this community. The area encourages buying local, getting outdoors, drinking on patios (or indoors), and socializing with friends, neighbors, or meeting new people.
Highlands Square is no exception, with about a mile-long stretch of 32nd in West Highlands, this street is worth a morning or afternoon stroll. Standing at the end of the street, you can see the small but vibrant street where there is much of what Colorado has to offer. There’s a wide selection to capture your attention; independent shops and boutiques for pets, clothes, flowers, books and more to explore. And a wide array of food to enjoy from coffee shops, bakeries, and restaurants. It’s the perfect place to enjoy alone, with family, or with friends, as this block truly has a little something that everyone can take pleasure in.

knot kidding These 4 ways to “Knot” hair take the simple high bun from messy to modern, with just a few easy steps! All you need is hairspray and bobby pins, hair elastics, and you can take a simple ponytail from a not - to a top knot! PHOTOGRAPHED BY: ROBIN FULTON, ROBINS PHOTOGRAPHY @robins.photography HAIR STYLING + WRITTEN BY: KIM JUNDT, KIM J BEAUTY @kimjbeauty MAKEUP BY: LINDSAY RICHARDS @lindsayannrich // MODELED BY: YULIYA BAYERMAN @whatyuliyawears SHOT ON LOCATION AT PUNCH BOWL SOCIAL STAPLETON @punchbowlsocial
Perfect for an on the go weekend of errands and chic special occasions, the messy top knot is one of the perfect hairstyles to try on those sleepy snooze button days when you don’t feel like doing much but still want to look great and put together with just a couple sprays of dry shampoo. If you can make a ponytail, you can do this style. It’s Knot rocket science- it’s just hair.
The Top Knot BEST FOR: Shoulder length or longer WHAT YOU’LL NEED: Four Bobby Pins + Hair-Tie PRO TIP: Start with day old hair DIFFICULTY: Medium
STEP | ONE
Start with a loose ‘cheerleader’ high ponytail.
STEP | THREE
Braid each section. Secure with a clear elastic. Fishtail or regular 3 strand, the braid type is up to you.
STEP | FIVE
Wrap and place with bobby pins to secure in place. Pull the front braid over the ponytail and bobby pin. Wrap the other braids around each other or knot them together. Make it as tight or loose as you want.
STEP | TWO
Create four sections if you have thick hair. If you have thinner hair, create only two.
STEP | FOUR
Pull braids gently apart to add fullness.
STEP | SIX
Pull out a few wispy pieces in front to frame your face and keep the look from being too prom like and stiff.

The Basic Ponytail Knot BEST FOR: Shoulder length or longer WHAT YOU’LL NEED: One Hair Tie PRO TIP: Add dry shampoo for extra texture DIFFICULTY: Easy The most basic and most versatile hairstyle- it involves no hot tools, very little styling products and best of all no braiding skills required for this basic look. Just a ponytail with a twist.
STEP | ONE
Create a low ponytail at the base of your neck.
STEP | TWO
Split it in half, close to your head and create a small space in the middle.
STEP | THREE
Roll the end of the ponytail through the space at the base of your neck.
STEP | FOUR
Gently pull the outside of twist to create more volume.
The Advance Ponytail Knot BEST FOR: Shoulder length or longer WHAT YOU’LL NEED: One Hair Tie, Clear Elastics PRO TIP: Use a little cream to keep hair together. DIFFICULTY: Advanced This knotted ponytail is knot hard at all. It’s a snap if you can tie your shoelaces! Just think it’s a pattern repeated with square knots.
STEP | ONE
Create a low ponytail at the base of your neck.
STEP | THREE
Secure with a clear elastic after you’ve wrapped to the back for longevity.
STEP | TWO
Take two thin slices of hair from the sides of the ponytail and wrap it around like tying a shoelace.
STEP | FOUR
Repeat steps two and three to the bottom of the ponytail.

DENVER STYLE MAGAZINE SHOPCATION: LONGMONT
Longmont, co
Just northeast of Boulder lies Longmont. Named for “Longs Peak,” this town has more going for it than just being a quieter Boulder or a great pit stop on the way to hiking destinations like Lyons or Rocky Mountain National Park in Estes Park. Longmont’s Main Street is going through a rebirth as long leases expire for insurance companies and law offices and new restaurants and boutiques move in. Walk the street and you’ll notice vibrant public works of art, architecture that remains from the city’s 1880s beginnings, and great patios and rooftops to stop for a refreshing beer. Speaking of brews, much like the rest of Colorado, the town boasts a vibrant brewery scene and is headquarters for big names like Left Hand Tap House and Oskar Blues as well as smaller breweries. Visiting them couldn’t be easier with Longmont’s bike friendly trails or you can hop on and off the Brew Hop trolley. Spend a day in “LoCo” and be charmed by the embrace of local, in the past, present and future.

WRITTEN BY: SAMANTHA BREWERS @sjbreww PHOTOS BY: KEN HOWARD, @k3images
Ten years ago, a seed was planted in Denver’s fashion community. Nurtured by ambitious designers and endless creativity, the semiannual event known as Denver Fashion Weekend sprouted so many roots that a single weekend would no longer suffice. According to the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation, “Metro Denver has a population of more than three million people, and has a growth rate that has consistently outpaced the national rate every decade since the 1930s.” The evolution of Denver began quietly— now, as the population continues expanding with creative minds from all corners of the country, we’re ready to make some noise. The time for Denver’s first official fashion week is now. DFW has become widely recognized over the past decade as Denver’s leading fashion showcase. Every spring and fall, the event provides a stage for designers, models and stylists to exhibit their work, and for fashion lovers to enjoy a weekend of magic. When the number of participants grew, and sellout crowds became a trend, the opportunity to upgrade to a week-long production seemed obvious. “Based on strategic planning, there was a big appetite for building
a fashion week as well as a more centralized system for folks to communicate, collaborate and develop an association,” said Lisa Gedgaudas, Program Administrator for Denver Arts & Venues. Now partnering with Denver Arts & Venues and Wings Over the Rockies, DFW will have the capacity for more fashion shows as well as interactive workshops. The addition of model, social media and designer workshops will provide the necessary skills to succeed in the industry, further supporting the aspiring artists, eager to learn the tricks of their trade. “I want people to walk away with good working knowledge of the industry and the opportunities available. I hope that by talking openly and honestly about the modeling world, aspiring models will make good choices for themselves and keep the industry standards high,” said Diana Gormley, who will be leading the model workshop from Donna Baldwin Agency. It’s clear that the fashion scene is craving evolution, but why specifically is the city ready for such an event? Population gain is a given, but what sets 2018 apart from years prior?

DENVER STYLE MAGAZINE EXAMINES
According to Keisha Makonese of Wings over the Rockies, “Denver is the greatest kept secret. We are the utopia of the Rocky Mountains, and a tourist destination ready to explode. Denver is ready to soar and take fashion to new heights.” With an outpouring of support and a beaming spotlight on DFW, there is no better time to take the leap than now. This transition will not only give more people the opportunity to participate and immerse themselves in fashion, but it will also provide hope for a higher level of recognition. “I believe DFW will magnify Denver’s reputation on a national design level. DFW is so beautifully produced, and as Denver keeps expanding they can only go up from here. Even for the Paper Fashion Show every year, we try to create the show on a larger scale.” said Michael Garcia, Producer of the Paper Fashion Show. This year, the Paper Fashion Show will join forces with DFW. With 14 years under its belt, the acclaimed fashion show will be a valuable addition to DFW’s runway lineup. As both events are staples to Denver’s fashion scene, this partnership came along at the ideal time, creating even more buzz in the community. Ultimately, the decision to expand DFW at this exact moment in time, is not black and white. It’s every color on the spectrum. It’s a designer waiting for their work to come to life. It’s a model waiting for the spotlight. It’s an artist waiting for a dose of inspiration. For DFW, it was an opportunity waiting to be taken.

Brett Mitchell MUSIC DIRECTOR, COLORADO SYMPHONY
Brett is drinking a Rebel Rebel cocktail at FNG, located at 3940 W 32nd Ave in the Highlands Square neighborhood of Denver.
The Colorado Symphony has been going through a bit of a rebirth recently. Among their 150 yearly performances, they’ve added events to target a new, much younger crowd. This year, performances include a night alongside acclaimed banjo artist Bela Fleck, and the score of Jurassic Park, alongside more classic selections like The Ring of Nibelung by conductor and composer Lorin Maazel. At the helm of this rebirth now is music director Brett Mitchell, who began his tenure in September of 2017. New to Denver, Brett’s led Cleveland, Houston, and Saginaw Bay in Michigan symphonies prior to heading west and landing in Denver. Brett met us at the new FNG to share more about his off-stage persona. What’s the one item you regret throwing away or not buying? I had a little bit of an “Eat Pray Love” moment right after I turned 30 when I decided to take a trip to Japan alone. I’m a big Superman fan, and brought three designs of the S-Shield with the intent of getting it tattooed on my left delt, but never followed through. Would have been a great commemoration of my trip, and I’ve regretted not getting it ever since. What are you always telling yourself ? Go to bed! I’m a night owl and a workaholic, but I always try to get at least 7 hours of sleep a night. That’s tricky, because I also have a rule that I have to be up at least 3 hours before I’m in front of anyone - anything less than that, and I’m just not quite at 100%. What is your not so secret indulgence? My dad bought me a watch when I was 7 years old to commemorate a special occasion, and I’ve been a die hard watch guy ever since. As I’ve advanced in my career, I’ve been able to buy increasingly nicer watches, partly because I spend way more time on Hodinkee than I probably should. What do you wear that makes you feel the most confident? There’s something about the ritual of suiting up before a concert and walking onstage wearing all black that I really love. People pay good money to come see the Colorado Symphony, and it’s not enough for us to sound good we have to look good, too. If you had more time, what would you do with it? Three things: 1) Run for office. 2) Act. 3)Read more.
