OFF THE CUFF

Written by Ryan Wagner, Bespoke Edge @bespokedge Photos by Demi Deherrera, Delphian Park Photography @demidearest

Afternoon storm warnings and hot days -such an unlikely juxtaposition can mean only one thing: Summertime in Denver. The warm weather provides us men the opportunity to shed layers and dress like the savvy, athletic and entrepreneurial men that we are. Menswear is getting a little more manly this season. Now, I should be clear that a nicely tailored fit isn’t going anywhere, but what I am starting to see is a rebound from the skinny menswear trend. All of those skinny ties and suspenders and belts are beginning to grow just a little. Belts are widening and classic wingtip shoes are pushing their way back into the limelight. Also, the trend towards more robust accessories is something that can’t be ignored. Thick leather wallets and even sunglasses made of non-traditional materials are becoming mainstream. Check out some of the items I found and you’ll see what I mean. Rock those blues and accessorize like John Wayne was looking over your shoulder.

ISSUE NO. 2

5 TIPS TO KEEP MEN LOOKING SHARP TIP ONE SHIRTS Choose a dress shirt with a collar strong enough to stand up all on its own and a fabric with some real character. Check, houndstooth, chevron; whatever it may be. You probably have enough conservative shirts at home, so make this the year you try something a little more interesting.

TIP TWO

PANTS

Selvage jeans aren’t going anywhere, but consider adding another style to your lineup. The Steven Alan pants I found at Armitage & McMillan are made of a breathable cotton, but are still hefty enough to keep you comfortable should a cool breeze find you. And in case you were wondering, it’s completely OK to not wear jeans to the office.

TIP THREE

BELTS

Good news fellas, that big belt you like wearing? Well, it’s finally in style! Western-style belts are back, so opt for a large buckle and something a little less shiny than you may ordinarily wear.

TIP FOUR

SHOES

This is the year that you need to start sporting some quality wingtips. And unless your feet are exceptionally moisture prone, skip the socks on the warmer days. Our stylish European cousins are on to something - going sockless is a great look.

TIP FIVE

ODDS & ENDS Get yourself a robust leather wallet, like the one I found from Bespoke Pedaler, and a pair of wooden sunglasses (seriously) that I scooped up from Sully & Co. Both items are a subtle nod to our mountain lifestyle. Dress sharp, guys.

Fashion never stands still; it is forever changing to the rhythm of each individual personality. The goal of Common Era is to reflect all that is in this present moment, and to provide you with all the fashion necessities of the current time. Debra Mazur, owner of Common Era, expresses her own fashion sense through her business, challenging and inspiring shoppers to do the same. Debra maintains a friendly, approachable atmosphere at Common Era. As a stylist, she will help dress you head to toe. As a courteous, understanding woman, she keeps the perfect balance between respecting your fashion boundaries, and pushing you to empower yourself. If you feel yourself shining through your clothing, she has done her job. Does she stick to the trends? In the words of Debra herself, “no, no, no, absolutely not!” Nothing comes through the doors of Common Era unless she has fallen in love with it; the store is a reflection of her style and personality. One important concept she recognizes, giving her the ability to connect with anyone who walks through the door, is the importance of timeless clothing. She works with a variety of age groups, making sure to bring in styles anyone can feel comfortable in. She believes that clothing is the supporting cast to your true self. Debra Mazur is a dreamer who built her vision from the ground up. Her compilation of experience and success has shaped her into the ideal role model to those with similar goals. Her life advice to you – “You must love it so much, that you never grow tired of it, and it never drains you. That it empowers you and fuels you simply by doing it. Tap into whatever it is that makes you feel alive.” Her ultimate goal is to challenge you with your sense of style. Your clothing will never overpower who you are, but the confidence you feel when you take a risk has the ability to tap into your sense of empowerment. “The

ALL THE THINGS YOU WANT:

ASHLEY MURPHY

Written by: Samantha Brewers @sjsteed || Photo by: Chelsey Pas, Friends and Lovers Photography @friendsandloversphotography At age six, Ashley Murphy sat alongside her mother and learned how to sew. A purple satin dress with a matching headband later, and she was hooked. High school came along, and sure enough she took on the challenge of making her own prom dress. Taking her creativity to the next level, she earned a degree in textiles, clothing and design. Her passion for creation started small, and evolved as she progressed through life. Today, you can purchase her quality creations at her very own store, Mildred + Bernice. Most goals begin with a simple thought. For Ashley, an idea flashed through her mind after a series of frustrating shopping experiences. After many instances of searching long and hard for jewelry she found appealing, she pondered the thought – why not make it myself? After living in New York and experiencing the vast and dynamic street style presented to her, she found the inspiration within to bring her ideas to life. “I first started making wood jewelry with a hacksaw in my Brooklyn apartment. Life then brought me to Denver where I learned traditional metalsmithing techniques, which has opened many doors of creativity – and here we are today!” said Ashley. Named after her two grandmothers, whom she adored, Ashley pushes to make Mildred + Bernice a quality brand you can trust. Over the years, she has grown to appreciate quality over quantity. She values a timeless product that is to be cherished for generations. With today’s market of mass produced jewelry, quality can be hard to come by. “Most of the collection is made with 14 karat gold, the quality that will last a lifetime. It isn’t the piece you buy, wear two times and forget about after three months. It is made with intention to be uncomplicated, effortless and timeless,” said Ashley. Not only does she appreciate a quality product, but also deeply values the journey that led her to Mildred + Bernice. “I love to love. I am so grateful for this life I live, and the people in it. Nothing makes my heart more full than looking back at each stage of my life and appreciating where it has brought me. I love to love, and that is that!”

What’s a busy girl to do when you have so many fun events coming up and so little time to shop? The answer is simple. Take one perfect outfit and accessorize it three different ways. Voila! I would love to have a different outfit for every occasion, but I don’t have a Beyonce sized closet or wallet. Finding a basic piece like a dress, skirt, or romper, is the smart way to make the most out of your closet. Summer in Denver is a great time for me to begin attending a wide variety of hip events that all need a different look. My basic look starts with a blacklace romper from local online boutique, Patterns and Pops. Located in the Highlands, Kismet and Starlet have the perfect pieces to transform this basic romper into three different looks that are summer-fun ready.

STYLIST SECRETS: THE PERFECT BLOW OUT Written by Mallory Lynn,

@mfbmallory, Hairstylist & Colorist at D’Ametris Salon, Arvada, CO

Being a stylist at D’Ametri’s Aveda Salon I am always hearing I wish I could style my hair like you! I am going to give you some tips on how to create a fabulous blow out, in four easy steps. Use a heat protectant when using any type of heat on your hair including a blow dryer. The tools to achieve a salonstyle blow-out are: a paddle brush and a round brush (two if you want volume) your favorite blow dryer!

STEP ONE Fringe First.

STEP TWO Section

It

Out. Help control those pesky colicks by stylings your fringe (bangs) first.Using your paddle-brush, brush fringe back and forth isolating the air towards the direction you are brushing until 70 - 80% dry. Then start shaping your fringe towards the direction you want them to lay. Create fringe with a deep sweeping part, just like our model.

Photos by CJ Latham Modeled by Anna Terranova 13

After drying 70-80% of your hair, section your hair from ear to ear and make two to three sections towards the back of your scalp (depending on the thickness of your hair) making each section approximately the width of your round brush.

@clintlathamjr @annateeranovea

ISSUE NO. 2

Flash Fab Tips: • Keep a nozzle on your blow dryer to isolate air-flow and prevent fly-aways. • Using two round brushes will create fabulous volume and cut down on your blow-dry time! • Try D’Ametris Dry Shampoo. Just sprinkle at your roots and brush through.

STEP THREE Hold + Cool.

STEP FOUR Twirl, Girl!

Work the front section first moving towards the back and from the bottom each section towards the top.

Twirl the round brush out of your hair to create movement in your blowout. If you’re wanting volume, pull the brush up (not down) when brushing through. Twirl the brush away from your face to open up your fabulous features.

Use a flexible-hold hairspray and let your hair cool on the round brush to set your style.

SHOPPING STAYCATION: BOULDER Written by: Heather Okimoto

@kelseybigelow

Denver doesn’t have to be your shopping destination. Towns big and small throughout this great state are home to hidden shopping secret, and this first installment of Shopping Staycation takes us to Boulder. Our Editor, Heather Okimoto, took a quick 40-minute drive on the highway to discover some of Boulder’s best shopping, great places to eat, stay, and be pampered. Beautiful and magnificent are flimsy words to describe the breathtaking rugged and intense backdrop of Boulder. This part college, part ski, part international destination-town, welcomes influxes of visitors and residents alike while maintaining a warm-quaint feel and providing amenities not available to smaller town. Family owned businesses, boutiques, and eccentric eateries line the award winning Gold-Level Walk Friendly Community streets of this small town and Happy Hour is never too early. Boulder is the perfect quick getaway to discover in an afternoon, or overnight. Our stops take us a Tea House that was given to the city of Boulder by the mayor and people of Dushanbe, Tajikistan, a nail salon that’s also home to a great selection of gifts and candy bar for clients. An afternoon wouldn’t be complete without Happy Hour at Boulder’s poshest spot and a couple of boutiques with something for everyone, including yourself.

The Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse The cultural significance of a teahouse in Central Asia relates to the gathering of friends to catch up and chat over a cup of tea. Specifically created for Boulder by their sister city of Dushanbe, Tajikistan, this tradition was brought to us with hopes that we too, can sit down and enjoy the company of our friends and family. In addition to the tradition, we are also graced with the presence of the beautiful building itself. The entire interior and exterior was hand painted and carved (no power tools used!) in Tajikistan. Offering a unique cultural experience with their wide selection of world cuisine, wall-to-wall layout of handmade artwork, and not to mention the amazing tea, the Boulder Teahouse is must see location. FRINGE FAVORITES

Written by Lacey Spruce, My Boring Closet @myboringcloset Photos by Nino Silva, Dress to Tell @dresstotell

While unpacking from a recent move, I came to a startling realization -- I have a LOT of clothes. Okay, maybe it wasn’t a startling realization. As a fashion blogger, I am constantly adding to my collection, but I also like finding ways to reinvent older pieces. This means I am growing my closet and rarely getting rid of older items, which has proved to be problematic when it comes to storing these items, but incredibly beneficial when it comes to exploring trends! People are always telling me, “Go through your closet and if you haven’t worn it in a year, get rid of it.” A year?!? There’s no way! Just because I didn’t wear it a year ago, doesn’t mean I won’t wear it in the future! I never thought I would want to wear my old overalls again or my mom’s old bellbottom jeans or my beat up Doc Marten’s, but that’s the great thing about trends--they come and go, but they always come back. Case in point, fr i nge. How many of you rocked a fringe shirt back in the day? How about a fringe leather bag? I bet you’re wishing you had kept those items, right?

Right now, the 70’s are back. Big time, Especially the fringe trend! Fringe accents were all over the place at New York Fashion Week, and everyone from Target to J. Crew to BCBG Max Azria is taking note. One way to rock this trend without looking like you just went through a shredder is to pick up a few pieces with fringe accents and incorporate them into your existing wardrobe.. The fringe jacket from Stitch Boutique and the fringe kimono from Meraki Moon are just two of my favorite items. For those of you looking for something more subtle, the fringe earrings or small accessories are great ways to add a little bit of flair to your look. Or, just grab a pair of scissors and get creative!

NEIGHBORHOOD SPOTLIGHT CAPITOL HILL Written by: Ashley Kidder XO Denver

@xodenver || Photos by: Kyla Fear Photography

@kfearlessphotography

Five years ago, I moved to Capitol Hill to follow a boy, my one college love. Initially, I had chosen my 350-square foot studio apartment on Poet’s Row for its unbeatable price ($495 for a studio -- what?!), location and character.

The proximity to Civic Center Park, the 16th Street Mall and LoDo was a huge seller for me, as was the relaxed atmosphere of the area. he first summer months felt like a scene out of a movie like The Sandlot; sun, tank tops and drinks on the patio. Cut to present day, where I have learned that Capitol Hill is much more than just an affordable, centrally-located Denver neighborhood.

It is the heart of the Mile High, the reliable old friend in a city whose urban fabric is continually stretching and evolving.

I As a huge chunk of Denver remains under construction, Capitol Hill provides comfort as the constant in a sprawling metro area of change and upwards innovation. Five years later, it’s clear that I’ve left my heart in Cap Hill, and I am sure you will, too.

While growing up in Denver, I learned the true importance of a work-life balance. I learned that it was just as important to go above and beyond in my job, as it was to enjoy life and the outdoors. My blog, The Black Velveteen, although often mistaken for a children’s book and sometimes a music album, is actually named after a brilliantly balanced beer cocktail of stout andchampagne. Like many other Denverites, I enjoy the ‘play-hard’ part and the Mile High gives us a ton of reasons to. Local restaurants, pubs, lounges, and art bars are popping up on corners, in old warehouses, trucks, and hotels, and I’m giving you style ideas to try around town. My Sips & Style series on the Denver Style Magazine blog is your behind the scenes look at local sips, eats, and most importantly, what to wear. Try something bold in a speakeasy, or stay casual for tapas. Find your next Friday date-night look, or Sunday Funday outfits from local boutiques and designers. The Black Velveteen, features photoshoots I style, outfit ideas, and words of womanly wisdom. My balance of feminine silhouettes and bold details is every reason to have fun with fashion. Let me help you stylishly balance your life with more Sips & Style. On the Denver Style magazine blog now.

FROM PHOTOS TO PATTERNS AND POPS: LINDSAY NAUGHTON & BRITTANY BRENNAN Written by: Samantha Brewers

@sjsteed || Photos by: Kristina Lynn Photography & Design

Two girls, a beautiful friendship and a mutual love for all things fashion: in other words, Lindsay Naughton and Brittany Brennan, the perfect team. Before Patterns & Pops, the girls found joy in expressing their style through their personal Instagram accounts. After being contacted by numerous brands to promote their clothing, they came to the realization that they could go beyond this level. Why not promote their own clothing? Ready for a career change anyways, they held their breath, booked two tickets to Vegas and went on their first buying trip. On the trip, they purchased their first five pieces of clothing and hoped their followers would be just as excited as they were. Turns out, they were! Years in the past, the girls became acquainted during their time of employment at a photography studio, and naturally began bonding over similar interests – “dancing, celebrity gossip, wine and most importantly fashion,” said Lindsay. After developing an everlasting friendship and launching Patterns & Pops, they instinctively fell into their roles based on their personal strengths. “Lindsay is a doer, so she naturally wears a lot of hats. She is in charge of making sure our inventory is organized and that our pretty packages get to our clients without any hiccups. I am in charge of our Instagram and creating content for our followers. We both double as models, steamers, customer support, and support for each other,” said Brittany. As far as the style of clothing they carry, you can get the sense of it from the name; Patterns & Pops! They go for bright, fun and of course, patterns. The goal is to provide women with outfits that will turn a head, and spark the question – “where did you get that?” The essence of Patterns & Pops is based on the spirit and carefree attitude given off by Lindsay and Brittany. By putting together their skills and passions, they established the perfect outlet for their creativity. Where does their inspiration come from? “I have always been inspired by all of the great women in my life. They fought to give me the opportunities that have been presented to me and now I get to pay it forward,” said Lindsey. “I always felt that if I created long lasting friendships and surrounded myself with really great people that things would just have a way of working out. So in that sense, interactions with people I love inspire me to live a happy life,” said Brittany. Not even a year into their business, and they have created quite a name for themselves. Just two best friends, living the dream.

SIMPLE MEN FROM STEADBROOK NATHAN KIRKPATRICK, MACKEY SATURDAY & DUSTIN PACE Written by: Samantha Brewers

@sjsteed || Photo by: Luca Venter

@lucaventer

Owned by a trio of talented individuals, Steadbrook is the perfect blend of graphic designers and coffee enthusiasts. Offering a selection of skate/surf influence menswear and freshly made coffee, they allow you to get your caffeine and shopping fix all in one trip. Why coffee, you ask? “It’s really because of our desire to get to know people, and get to know Denver as a community,” said Nathan. To give you a better feel for this three-man shop, here’s a little breakdown. Dustin is the man behind the coffee, actually roasting the beans in the back room of the store (giving the room that comforting aroma!). Nathan and Mackey are both graphic designers, working on the clothing aspect of the business. “Its kind of like all three of us are pursuing our own passions within the store,” explained Nathan. One design element they take pride in is their knack for simplicity and attention to detail. In order to further explain the mission behind their work, they relate to a powerful statement found on the label of the brand, Norse Projects –“the mark of true luxury is not the grand gesture, but the simple things done well.” This philosophy directly reflects the values upheld by Steadbrook. What sets them apart from other men’s clothing stores in Denver is their understanding and nostalgia for the culture of their target market. Growing up around skate shops shaped them in their youth, and helped establish their identities. After growing out of the scene, starting this business helped fill the void, reconnecting them with their love for skate/surf culture. “Denver is a big city that feels like a small one,” said Nathan. Stores like Steadbrook give Denver the illusion of a smaller size; they work to connect and get to know their community. If simplicity, quality, and great taste in men’s street-wear fashion, make your next stop Steadbrook.
