FROM THE EDITOR’S TABLET Spring has sprung and hope springs eternal.

This spring issue is about the hopes that are emerging in our Montbello community. The cover photo this issue recognizes the hopes of Earth Day and the hopes and respect demonstrated through the dances and blessings performed by GRUPO TLALOC Danza Azteca at a recent Montbello event. Based out of Denver, Colorado, GRUPO TLALOC Danza Azteca is a traditional Mexica/Azteca group embodied of Chicano/Mexicano families and students of all ages and dedicated to preserving and nourishing the ancient knowledge of their ancestors.

They have pledged to uphold and walk a spiritual way of life and have committed themselves to help educate the public’s view of the Aztec culture. Montbello’s own Franklin Cruz dances with this group and is featured in the cover photo (he is the dancer dressed in white in the front row).

It was my pleasure to attend Monarch Montessori’s all-day celebration of the Earth on April 22. Earth Day is an annual global event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First held on April 22, 1970, it now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by EarthDay.org with more than 1 billion people in more than 193 countries recognizing and honoring our Earth.The official theme for 2022 is Invest In Our Planet. A fitting term as eight Montbello schools, along with the Montbello Urban Farm at United Church of Montbello have invested in our planet by planting school learning and production gardens.

As one of those school gardens, Monarch Montessori has invested in converting its entire playground into a growing space that literally and figuratively feeds the students. From the amazing dancers to the school-wide Peace Path walk, to the Toddler Sensorial Garden/play space Ground Breaking, to the Pumpkin Patch Dedication, to the various stations for all to learn about and from Mother Nature, the day was so impactful and meaningful for everyone! I felt inspired to participate in the celebrations.

I asked Melanie Stewart-Lopes, Operations and Marketing Manager for the school, “why a farm-themed playground?” The response, “Our goal is to provide hands-on opportunities to explore how humans and the environment sustain each other. We want to provide an edible garden space that allows children to play an active role in producing home-grown food that is healthy and nutritious. By having them help grow food, they will see how soil, water, and sunlight add minerals and nutrients to produce, and how those minerals and nutrients help build healthy and strong bodies.”

The farm is part of the Montessori curriculum and supports science, math, humanities, literacy, and other areas of learning. Not only an investment in our planet but an investment in our children’s future. Denver’s Montbello Community:

Small Seeds Can Grow Into Large Trees

We’re all familiar with the tale about the small seed that is planted and grows into the flourishing tree. Indeed, it is an inspiring and miraculous process, whereby a tiny specimen breaks through the surface of dark soil to rise to the highest height possible with the aid of only a little water and sunlight. The thought of it so reminds me of the efforts in which I’ve engaged over the past eight years with community organizing and development in my Montbello neighborhood. The journey has led us to shepherd the Montbello FreshLo Initiative, including the development of the Montbello FreshLo Hub, a multi-use facility that will offer 97 units of affordable housing (for individuals and families making between 40 and 70 percent AMI) as well as a performing arts theater, grocery store, nonprofit service offices, including Mental Health of Denver. I am grateful to The Denver Foundation for its role in this journey.

My Entree into the Community I moved to Denver in 2003 with my husband, Rev. James E. Fouther, Jr., and our two daughters, Danielle and Daryn, who were nine and six, respectively. We came to Colorado after eight years of living in South Florida. Bidding farewell to the oceanfront, we arrived at the beautiful mountainside city in response

to James’s pastoral call from the United Church of Montbello, moving directly into the home (owned by the church) in the heart of Montbello. A variation of the Italian word, the community was named for the view of the beautiful mountains developers admired when building the neighborhood’s first homes in the mid-1960s.

My husband and I immediately saw similarities between Montbello and the neighborhoods we’d grown up in and around in our native home, Chicago, including proud community members, the majority of who owned and cared for their homes. That pride extended to Montbello High School and the youth who held the “Warrior” banner high. We sent our girls to the neighborhood school, Maxwell Elementary, named for Jessie Whaley Maxwell, the first AfricanAmerican Administrator in Denver Public Schools who passed in 2002. Our church, which sits atop a hill, kitty-corner to the Montbello High School campus, was (and is still) composed of individuals and families from within the Montbello community and those from throughout Metro Denver. The first faith community in Montbello, it was created as a purposefully multicultural, multidenomi-

national, and multigenerational church in 1968, shortly after the deaths of Dr. Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy. In terms of community amenities, we also relished the neighborhood grocery stores— at the time two, Albertson’s and Safeway.

A Community Turning Point I believe Montbello began taking a turn in 2008, with the onset of the “Great Recession,” during which many families lost hold of their homes. For a time, you’d drive down any given block in the neighborhood and see at least three foreclosure signs. Indeed, the 80239 was listed by CNN as number nine on the list of “The Top 10 Zip Codes Hardest Hit by Foreclosure in America.” While the signs slowly disappeared and new neighbors moved in, we came to discover these neighbors now rented the homes from outside investors, many of whom took advantage of the downturn to buy foreclosures inexpensively. Additional changes included the closing of Montbello High School, which not only served as the primary DPS school for residents of the community, but a hub for sports, theatrical presentations, community meetings, and other gatherings.

grocery stores closed and were replaced by alternative models that met some of the community’s needs, but not all, as the previous stores did.

The Denver Foundation and the Planting of Seeds I began working at The Denver Foundation shortly before the recession (from 2007 until the end of 2016) and often shared stories with colleagues of the trends I was witnessing and experiencing in my neighborhood. As disinvestment in Montbello was taking hold, bold and robust reinvestment was happening in many other Denver communities, compounding my realization of the stark disparities as I drove from Montbello through (then) Stapleton and into Cherry Creek and back each day.

In 2013, The Denver Foundation, along with LiveWell Colorado, hired long-time activist, educator, and community organizer, Rich Male, to gather a few Montbello residents and stakeholders to determine how the community might organize itself to begin addressing the issues we faced. I was a part of this small group, along with my husband, James, and longtime community residents and leaders Chris Martinez (current MOC president), Terry Liggins, Silke Hansen, and LaToya Petty. We quickly named our working group the Montbello Organizing Committee (MOC) and rolled up our sleeves, embarking on a journey of community awareness-

building, listening, celebrating, and galvanizing.

The Journey of Community Organizing and Building The journey has led MOC to become a 501(c)3 organization committed to community organizing and addressing issues such as transportation (including multi-modal), economic community development, mental health, education, leadership development, nonprofit capacity building, access to healthy food, and an overarching social justice and advocacy framework rooted in racial equity and amplified through our publication, the Montbello Urban Spectrum Edition (MUSE), a publication under the umbrella of the Denver Urban Spectrum.

Today, equitable community building is squarely at the center of our efforts, formalized by the MOC Board’s recent vote to become a community development corporation (CDC). We are fortunate to have Executive Director, Donna Garnett, who has led the growth of MOC to a new level, previously unimagined. Her efforts are augmented by 10 brilliant and diverse staff members, many of whom are Montbello residents.

Seeds Taking Root, Growing, and Flourishing The Denver Foundation’s initiative and subsequent investments, through the Strengthening Neighborhoods Program and Community Grants Program, enabled MOC to leverage additional funding from many other foundations and sources. They include the Colorado Health Foundation, Caring for Denver, Mile High Connects, City of Denver,

Rose Community Foundation, SPARCC, Gates Family Foundation, RootED, The Colorado Trust, Colorado Creative Industries, and others.

One of the most catalytic philanthropic investments has come from the Kresge Foundation. Through a referral and introduction from Dace West (at the time the Executive Director of Mile High Connects), MOC applied and was awarded a planning grant for a new FreshLo initiative of Kresge’s.

We joined a cohort of 25 other organizations (out of 520 applicants nationwide) and began developing placemaking strategies that would marry healthy food options with cultural offerings in partnership with Montbello community members. The Montbello FreshLo Initiative resulted and now includes the development of the Montbello FreshLo Hub, a multi-use facility that will offer 97 units of affordable housing (for individuals and families making between 30 and 60 percent AMI), a cultural arts center, managed by Colorado Black Arts Movement (led by FreshLo Initiative Co-

Chair Khadija Haynes), and Mental Health Center of Denver as well as additional nonprofit tenants. To date, MOC has received an allocation of Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) for the affordable units and New Market Tax Credits, which will provide equity for the commercial and cultural spaces. Flo Development Services leads the project as the developer, and Montbello-based Gilmore Construction Corp. is a part of the general contractor team.

Matching grants from the Colorado Health Foundation have enabled us to enhance our development efforts with programming and infrastructure to promote sustainable healthy living. That includes the FreshLo Walkable Loop, the build-out of a six-mile walkable trail through Montbello’s residential area that links parks, schools, activated community gardens, and other features in the neighborhood. The intent is to improve health outcomes by adding safe walking trails, art installations, and access to freshly grown food.

This work includes 26 com-

munity partners and has resulted in an allocation of City funds to install bike lanes, crosswalks, and lighting.

Your Generosity Our goal is to close on the Montbello FreshLo Hub development at the end of this year (2022) and break ground in early 2023, with a projected opening of early 2024.

Through our collective efforts, we have secured $60 million of the $70 million required to complete the FreshLo Hub (read our project overview).

Housing Stability for our Community

By Stacie Gilmore, Denver City Council President Homeownership is the primary contributor to building wealth in our community. Not only does homeownership build generational wealth, but it also creates economic stability for our community. It is no secret that there has been a long history of barriers and discriminatory practices that have prevented more people of color from obtaining homeownership. For those families that were able to achieve homeownership, the increasing costof-living continues to threaten that stability, and I understand the strain and stress that can have on a family.

In early February, I was contacted by a homeowner who had recently found out he was losing his home of 17 years to foreclosure. After connecting him to city agencies – The Department of Housing Stability (HOST) and Denver Metro Fair Housing, we soon discovered that there were many more homes being foreclosed on in the Green Valley Ranch South neighborhood, which is overseen by Master Homeowner’s Association.

While foreclosures are occurring across the State of Col-

orado and Denver, there was an exponential number of them within this specific area, which I find very alarming.

After discovering the extent of this issue, my office immediately engaged with as many people as possible, providing access to resources to mitigate any additional foreclosures. On March 12th, I, along with the Department of Housing Stability, Denver Metro Fair Housing, and a host of other agencies, met with residents to provide access to housing counselors and resources. We connected many homeowners to nonprofit partners who could assist them with negotiating payment plans, paying down fines and fees, and providing them with overall support to protect their homes.

On March 16th, I asked that Attorney General Phil Weiser, in partnership with Governor Polis, launch an investigation into the Master Homeowner’s Association aka Green Valley Ranch South HOA. My office continues to provide the Attorney General’s office with constituent cases and direct introductions. I know that many of our families in District

11 have lived here for generations. They have worked hard for their homes, and it is heartbreaking to see them in this situation. Please remember that if you receive any communication from your HOA that you respond to it immediately and keep detailed records. I am continuing to work with the Department of Housing Stability (HOST) and the Attorney General’s office to ensure that homeowners receive due process and are being treated fairly. In Montbello, and across Senate District 33, we also stand on the shoulders of leaders like Chris Martinez, who has lived and raised his family along with Terry Martinez in Montbello for more than 40 years. Mr. Martinez continues to serve in both the public and private sector to increase access to affordable housing, transportation, business development, and highquality schools in Montbello.

What’s most important is that he has helped prepare me and next generation leaders like Mayra Gonzáles. Mayra not only recently secured nearly a million-dollar grant to invest in the community, but has also led in the development of a grocery store and affordable housing in Montbello.

I’m also honored to work with Chris Martinez and Mayra Gonzáles on policies today that will address housing, homelessness, and economic development across the State of Colorado. Policies like House Bill 1205, the Senior Housing Income Tax Credit, which creates an additional $1,000 income tax credit for qualifying seniors aged 65 and up, who have an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $75K or less. I’m running this bill to give a little relief to our seniors on fixed incomes who have fallen on hard times.

We celebrate the achievements of our ancestors, their legacies, and how we are connected to their work with the phrase, “We stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us.” As we continue to “build back better” in Colorado let us also acknowledge those who have built Colorado, Montbello, and all of Senate District 33 into what it is today. On April 13th we honored the life of former Senate District 33, Senator Gloria Tanner. Senator Tanner was the first Black woman to serve in the Colorado State Senate.

During her seventeen years in public service, she initiated and sponsored legislation on key issues such as marital discrimination in the workplace, parental responsibility, worker’s

Another policy, House Bill 1137, HOA Board Accountability & Transparency, will prohibit homeowner associations (HOAs) from foreclosing on homes because of a fine, creates a cure process that stops our neighbors from being fined daily, and requires violations and fines be mailed to our neighbors via certified mail and translated bilingually. So many people have lost their homes due to foreclosure from petty fines. We will put a stop to this.

The last policy I will share is HB-1304, State Grants Investments Local Affordable Housing, which creates 2 state grant programs: one which invests in infrastructure projects to build affordable housing, and another to determine sustainable land use best practices that will accomplish the goals of the grant program. Ultimately, our goal will be to partner with community organizations like Montbello Organizing Committee to help invest dollars into our community for more neighbors to access affordable housing through the State Department of Local Affairs.

None of these accomplishments would be made without you holding me accountable to and supporting me for the work you elected me to do. As we continue to build Montbello, let’s all remember from whence we’ve come and those who helped get us here. You can’t know where you’re going without recognizing where you’ve been. I’m excited to take this journey with you and I am here to serve you in any way that I can. I’m grateful for you. Let’s do this!

Montbello Native Reports on a Community Project Close to His Heart Montbello Organizing Committee’s Fresh Lo Makes the News Kelie Kyser, Gomez Howard Group

Justin Adams, CBS4 news reporter and Montbello native, was recently handed the opportunity to share a positive story about the neighborhood he reveres. While discussing upcoming projects in the newsroom, Justin learned about a special assignment for the station’s “Elevating Black Voices” series slated to run during Black History Month.

When a colleague discovered they wouldn’t be able to report the story, Adams enthusiastically stepped in to “Cover Colorado First” in the neighborhood he loves. “Once I saw the word Montbello, I didn’t even read the rest - I immediately put my hand up,” he shared. “I’ve always wanted to talk about the beauty and sense of community in Montbello, so I jumped at the opportunity.”

Coverage of the Montbello Organizing Committee’s (MOC) Fresh local and equitable Lo Hub (Fresh Lo) project has been magnified during a time when matters of food insecurity, and lack of affordable

housing, hit far too close to home for many Coloradans. A statistic Justin found most compelling had to do with the way transportation affects equity. “One of the things I learned that I found eye-opening was that one in four people who live in Montbello don’t have access to a car,” he revealed. Many of us underestimate the significant role transportation plays when it comes to accessing grocery stores with healthy and reasonably priced options.

MOC identified the needs of the community and skillfully implemented a solution to improve health outcomes, provide residents with the stability of ownership, and a conduit to revitalize arts and culture in the neighborhood. The organization’s mission is certainly newsworthy – something Adams notes made it necessary for him to cover the story.

“There is great importance in making sure that people have a place to go and get fresh produce. To make sure that the family has sustenance, a place to live, and to be able to build wealth – it’s extremely important.”

As we settle into the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic, inequities in communities of color continue to be exposed. Justin emphasized the significant importance of raising awareness of these issues and doing something to level the playing field, also known as society. “Don’t we want people to be able to thrive? Money shouldn’t dictate whether your family has a nutritious meal at night or if you have a safe place to lay your head. That’s why [Fresh Lo] is so important. To make sure everyone is cared for and that we all thrive together.”Y

Building Wealth from Within Initiative Kicks Off With First Cohort

By Kiera Jackson, Director, Building Wealth From Within Center The first cohort of the new Montbello Organizing Committee’s (MOC) Building Wealth from Within (BWFW) initiative has begun their work.

On April 18, the all Spanishspeaking group began their journey to hone the business skills necessary to become catalysts for change - creating viable solutions for the community residing in 80239 and 80249 to thrive, not just live in Montbello. The intent of BWFW is to provide business employment and ownership opportunities for residents, combat gentrification, and create pathways to sustain generational wealth.

“I am super happy that MOC has created this amazing opportunity for the community,” said Colorado Changemakers Collective director Maricruz Herrera. “I am equally excited about the new amenities (Freshlo Hub) they will provide to help our neighbors. The building itself will be a testament to the hard work of partners and community members working together for a better future.”

The BWFW curriculum is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and confidence to launch and sustain their own businesses. During the 12-week program, participants will be immersed in a supportive environment and fully comprehensive business training experience conducted in Spanish. Participants will graduate with knowledge on the following topics: mar-

keting and research, credit, and financing, planning for business success, and more.

Even though the first cohort is underway, there is still an opportunity to drop in to attend classes being offered during this cycle. The task of the committee continues to be to create a blueprint for success that will lay the foundation for small business owners and prospective homeowners seeking support.

FreshLo Hub Gets a Classroom Inspired By What Could and Will Be Shannon Hoffman, Program Director, FreshLo Hub and Real Estate, Montbello Organizing Committee A foundational relationship between the FreshLo Hub and neighboring school, Northeast Early College (NEC), which started in September 2021 with a meeting of staff from Denver Public Schools and Hub consultants, has been transformed into a space for young people to give design input on the FreshLo Hub project. In early March 2022, FreshLo Hub consultants from Gilmore Construction visited the senior engineering students at NEC to review their design recommendations for some of the real construction challenges on the site. Students recommended many of the same solutions that the Hub engineers, archi-

tects, and designers have concluded as well.

“Students in their 4th year of engineering classes at Northeast Early College are working on a year-long design project, focusing on a topic of their choosing,” NEC engineering teacher Matt Lapaire describes the project. “Several groups expressed interest in architecture, civil engineering, and construction management, and were paired with professionals from Gilmore Construction working on the Montbello FreshLo Hub project. After reviewing current design thinking, discussing remaining challenges, and visiting the proposed site, students produced iterations of prototypes to further develop ideas around the use of space on this small lot. Along the way, students were asked to document their design process and to get feedback from the professionals.”

Prior to the March design review session, students in first- and second-year engineering classes had the opportunity to participate in a career panel with Gilmore Construction staff to learn more about their backgrounds, what they were like in high school, and the many paths that led them to their current careers.

“I’m excited to engage young women in the construction, engineering, and architectural industries through this project,” said Edween Gilmore, executive vice president, finance, administration & business strategy. “We have young women who are walking job sites and looking at and creating solutions to construction problems and presenting them in the classroom in a presentation that was very impressive.

nity can provide young students. To see females engaging in a male dominant field and coming up with solid solutions to real life construction problems was exciting for me.To hear them present their solutions on the FreshLo project in particular, very articulate, very well thought out, and actual solutions we could use on this project. Bringing real-life experience to young women in the construction industry where they are being challenged with a real-life scenario or exercise where these young women are very effective, just as competitive, articulate and producing quality solutions on a project like this was amazing.“ “As the teacher in this setting, I was very appreciative of the involvement of Gilmore and Kiewit representatives,” Mr. Lapaire adds. “The project was real, the feedback was real, and students rose to the occasion with their efforts to satisfy the design constraints set forth. It was probably some of the best ‘real-world’ experience I’ve been able to offer in my classes! This is a partnership we plan to continue. All stakeholders agree, investing in Montbello’s infrastructure and youth will yield growth, but here we got to experiment with each growing the other!”

“It was great working with these students because they seem very inspired about what we have going on with the project in the neighborhood and the community impact it will have,” said Justin Gilmore, business development director. “I felt them to be more vested in the project than typical. It also was good to see them thinking outside of the box about how to come up with certain solutions while also trying to keep a budget in

Denver Visionary Transportation Plan Enters Phase 3.0

By Francisco Miraval, Project Vision 21 Denver Moves Everyone 2050, the first major comprehensive transportation plan in Denver in 100 years, will identify equitable and safe solutions for the movement of people and goods, ensuring Denverites have access to what they need.

Denver’s strategic transportation plan, called Denver Moves Everyone 2050 (DME) and launched in mid2021, is entering now its Phase 3.0 where members of the community will be able to share ideas and comments about how to improve all aspects of transportation in this city. The online engagement tool is available at denvermoveseveryone.com.

The feedback shared by the community will set the foundation for the project by identifying community values that will inform the goals of the plan, as well as the desire to improve or renew the local transportation system, or both.

DME’s Phase 3 will end in late May and soon thereafter Phase 4.0 will begin, focusing on identifying specific projects.

“The most recent strategic transportation plan for Denver

was in 2008. Since then, there have been significant changes in and around the city including population growth, growing safety challenges, evolving needs to move freight and people efficiently, emerging technologies and growing inequities,” according to a press release issued by the Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI). “We recognize the evolution of Denver over the past 14 years. That’s why we are excited to create this inclusive, future-focused, visionary plan.”

DME will build upon the extensive work completed for the Denveright Comprehensive Plan 2040, developing a transportation plan that aligns future investments with communitydeveloped mobility goals.

There are four major phases of the two-year DME project.

Each phase will build on the next to ultimately identify near-, mid- and long-term projects. The project will be guided by community feedback coupled with knowledge and insight from industry leaders in transportation, energy, education, health and wellness and many more—a comprehensive approach to include all voices in the development of the plan.

Montbello Memory Mapping Project is Underway!

We know that Montbello has stories and traditions that have added to the richness of what attracts people to Colorado and the greater Denver area. Throughout discussions within Reimaging Montbello, as a community we have discovered tracking our history has been left to non-residents for the most part. Generations of community members have come and gone with only a few knowing the majority of the stories regarding the impact residents, businesses, locations, etc., have had on Montbello.

As we see our community changing for the better daily, we hope to capture the knowledge of residents who have seen the cross-cultural connectedness of Montbello through

the years. To ensure these stories are captured and shared, residents from the neighborhood are being asked to impart their memories of what was and what is now through the Montbello Memory Mapping initiative.

With the help of incredible students from The Confluence Center at McGlone Academy and in partnership with Daniel Chavez, Principal Designer at TzinTzun Studio, the program is underway and seeking more participants. As we awaken and capture the impactful stories of our residents, the plan is to share the voices of our neighbors through a podcast so that we can add a personal touch to history and pay tribute to the people who helped shape the community. Our goal is to incorporate these recordings into an art installation at the Montbello Branch Library that displays a QR code for residents to scan, listen and learn from the experiences of past generations. views with storytellers, all will learn more about topics ranging from neighborhood development to resident civic engagement to Montbello High School and much more.

“As part of the Montbello Memory Mapping Project, I was asked to write about my favorite place in Montbello when I lived there in 19791996 and why,” says Montbello long-time resident. “My favorite place in Montbello was the Montbello Library located at 12955 Albrook Drive.

It was my favorite place because within those walls I could be taken to any place I envisioned, visit places I would never be able to go, and read in a quiet, inviting, helpful and pleasant environment. The library staff was always willing to share and explore options by going the extra mile to help. To top it off, they were always friendly and maintained a positive attitude.”

In the coming editions of the MUSE, we will introduce you to some of the community members who are sharing their voices. The program organizers aim to provide more ways for the community to get involved as the project moves forward.

¡El Proyecto de Mapeo de Memoria de Montbello está en Marcha!

Sabemos que Montbello tiene historias y tradiciones que se han sumado a la riqueza de lo que atrae a la gente a Colorado y al área metropolitana de Denver. A lo largo de las discusiones dentro de Reimaging Montbello, como comunidad, hemos descubierto que el seguimiento de nuestro historial se ha dejado en su mayor parte a los que no son residentes. Summer on the Walkable Loop Event Series Set to Kick Off

By Blanca Silva, Gomez Howard Group The change in seasons is bringing outdoor events to Montbello, where you will find food, fun, and friends coming together. This summer, the Montbello Organizing Committee will host a series of events at the site of the future FreshLo Hub at 12300 Albrook Dr. The FreshLo Hub will feature a fresh food market, cultural arts center, mental health services, business incubator and retail stores, and affordable housing. Groundbreaking is scheduled to begin in December 2022.

The Summer on the Walkable Loop Event Series is kicking off on May 25th with Montbello Organizing Committee in partnership with Children’s Farms in Action’s distribution of grow-at-home boxes. Residents who register in advance will receive seedlings to begin their garden, allowing for the growth of fresh foods at home. They will also receive gardening tips and recipes to make nutritious meals.

Gardening demos will continue throughout the summer at all the events, which will occur on June 24th and July 29th.

Need help signing up for SNAP or WIC? You can apply on site with the help of experts to guide you through the application. Participants will be able to learn more about the FreshLo Walkable Loop, a 6mile walkable trail through Montbello’s residential area that links parks, schools, community gardens, and other features in the neighborhood. In 2021, History Colorado at-

tended the Summer on the Walkable Loop event and partnered with Montbello en Bici for a historical tour of the loop.

Over 30 bike riders made stops at local schools and gardens to learn the story behind each landmark. Bring your bike this summer and join Montbello en Bici as they tour the community via bicycle!

Denver Museum of Nature and Science Partners with Montbello Organizations

Martinez, DMNS Director of Experiences & Partnerships There’s an African proverb that states, “If you want to go fast, go alone; but if you want to go far, go together.” The Denver Museum of Nature & Science is committed to collaborating with partners, families, and individuals to create meaningful experiences and build authentic, long-lasting relationships. As part of this work, our team has been on a journey to learn how people want to connect with nature and science and how the Museum can be a partner in the great work already happening in neighborhoods across Colorado.

Recently, a Museum team visited a few of our partners in Montbello to learn more about their organizations and the Montbello community—from the rich history to plans for new spaces and programs.

On our visit, we had the opportunity to take a tour of the Montbello Open Space Park with Environmental Learning for Kids (ELK) Executive Director Juan Pérez Sáez. Juan shared the ways in which the ELK team has engaged young people and families in programming and designing this unique neighborhood nature space. It was wonderful to see the ELK Education Center that will open its doors this spring for “the community to learn, play and create through improved access to nature, educational and community programs.”

We stopped by the Denver Broncos Boys & Girls Club, where we saw children pour

into the Club after school, eager to get help with their homework, finish their art project, learn to cook, and connect with each other and the caring staff, including Club Director Rich Barrows and Program Director Lisa Ford. We also heard about the teens who were leading the planning for the upcoming March for Peace and Fitness Carnival and Resource Fair on April 23.

We visited the Montbello Organizing Committee (MOC) offices and met with Nicole Millan, MOC program manager, and Donna Garnett, MOC executive director, and learned about their work in food access, mental health, education advocacy and community engagement, the planning and development of the FreshLo Hub, and community wealth building —all created with extensive community input.

The Museum is honored to partner with and support these organizations that have a long history and strong relationships in the Montbello community and are deeply committed to creating spaces, programs and futures with their neighbors.

It is through these relationships, as well as focus groups and interviews in Montbello and other communities across Colorado, that people asked us to bring Museum experiences to them. In response to this request, the Museum is thrilled to launch the brand-new Curiosity Cruiser, a custom-built museum on wheels experience that will join community events in neighborhoods across metro Denver to deliver fun science activities. Look for us at a Montbello Site Activation 12300 Albrook Drive this summer.

We are also committed to centering community voices in

the future of our permanent exhibits and experiences at the Museum. Over the years, we’ve been delighted to host conversations at organizations like the Broncos Boys & Girls Club about what the Montbello community values in Museum experiences and what topics are most interesting.

Through partnerships, the Museum is finding new ways to invite people into the Museum. For example, we have partnered with the Mexican Cultural Center for our next free day on May 1 to celebrate Día del Niño with performances and fun activities for the whole family. We are pleased to partner with Denver Public Libraries to offer a free family membership that can be checked out at any of the branch locations. And, we offer free admission every day to school and organized youth groups visiting the Museum.

Denver Launches $9M Instant Rebate Program for E-Bikes, Heat Pumps and Other Equipment

By Jeff Howard, Gomez Howard Group Attention Montbello residents, if you have been considering some energy-efficient updates to your home or transportation options, the City of Denver just announced some incentives that might interest you.

Denver’s Office of Climate Action, Sustainability and Resiliency launched its Climate

Action Rebates program to cover up to 100% of the cost for all-electric energy equipment such as heat pumps, e-bikes, and solar panels for Denver residents to transition to cleaner heating, cooling, and more.

“If we can make adopting electric equipment easy and cost-effective, and in some instances free, we are removing barriers for homeowners ready to make that switch,” said Grace Rink, Denver’s chief climate officer as part of the press release sent out on the initiative. “This program will reduce energy costs, improve our health and air quality, and get us that much closer to our city’s ambitious climate goals.”

The city outlined the components of the program as part of its announcement. Montbello residents capitalize on the following rebate benefits: E-Bikes or E-Cargo Bikes lElectric bikes can save users thousands of dollars on fuel and maintenance by replacing car trips. As part of the rebate program, Denver residents can get a $400 instant rebate when purchasing a qualifying electric bike from a participating bike shop, and income-qualified residents may qualify for a $1,200 instant rebate.

E-cargo bikes are eligible for an additional $500 instant rebate.

Home Energy Upgrades lHomeowners can stack Denver’s rebates on top of Xcel’s electrification rebates, reducing the financial barrier to installing home upgrades powered by renewable energy sources. Denver’s Climate Action Rebates may cover up to 80% of the total installed project cost, or up to 100% of the cost through income-qualified rebates. Denver’s rebates are only eligible for existing homes and must be submitted

by an approved contractor. Eligible equipment includes: •Air source heat pump •Ground source heat pump •Mini-split heat pump •Heat pump water heaters •Bidirectional electric vehicle charging/V2B •Battery storage •Electric vehicle charging home wiring If homeowners have or will install a heat pump, a heat pump water heater, or a bidirectional electric vehicle charger as part of the rebate program, they are eligible for additional rebates, including: •Solar panels •Electric service upgrade The city wants to see Montbello residents participate in the program and have instituted a plan for the Climate Action, Sustainability and Resiliency office to monitor who is receiving the rebates to ensure they reach under-resourced neighborhoods. The office currently works with the Energy Resource Center, longtime city partners dedicated to increasing energy efficiency in low-income neighborhoods, to share and promote the program. Funding for the Denver Climate Action Rebate program comes from the Climate Protection Fund (CPF). The taxpayer-supported CPF raises $40M per year and is dedicated to eliminating greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, supporting climate adaptation and environmental justice, and creating new jobs. The Success of the Montbello Connector

By William Howard, Gomez Howard Group In October of 2021, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) launched the Montbello Connector to improve accessibility across the area. This is a free rideshare program that residents can use to commute to local neighborhood destinations and transit stations.

Did you know on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., riders can use the Montbello Connector mobile app or call 720-8680560 to request rides in English and Spanish? Just like the Uber or Lyft platform, the Montbello Connector uses vehicles that are often smaller than full-sized buses and provides on-demand trips. Additionally, in support of accessibility and clean energy, this service utilizes three unique types of vehicles: a wheelchair-accessible van, a plug-in hybrid minivan, and an all-electric sedan.

Data shows that Montbello residents like the program.

Through a survey created to understand how riders use the service and to look for potential improvements, the numbers show ridership has consistently exceeded expectations since its launch. With a total of 15,600 passengers, more than 45,000 miles driven, and an average wait time of only 16 minutes, the Montbello Connector has had an impressive first six months of operation. Not only are residents pleased with the service, but they also hope it is here to stay past its 12-month trial run in the community.

This form of micro-transit has been a great way to access resources throughout the community, especially for those who are reliant on public transit. Plus, the app is easy to use: First, input your ride info to view the estimated wait time.
