THE GRAPEVINE, February 2012

WELCOME TO YOUR

From the

EDITORS DESK Well back to work, no rest for the wicked. Lovely time in the U.K. well for the first day anyway. Did lots of shopping then went to a friends house for a get together with my friends where I succeeded in falling down the stairs and breaking my clavicula ( collar bone ) ouch!!! Warrington Hospital is really not the place to be on a Friday night. At least I got to see everyone as they all came to have a laugh at my expense, funny how accidents bring out the sense of humour in people. That happened on the 27th Jan and I am really quite proud of the fact that I am able to type already. Maybe one day soon I will be able to lie down in

bed again and maybe even take a bath. Still can’t complain, 10 day;s ago I was in constant agony and on loads of painkillers, wheras now I am only in pain when I move the wrong way and I am finding lots of ways to get around certain difficulties i.e. putting my makeup on with my left hand, cooking microwave ready meals, dressing myself and much more. It’s surprising what you can do when you have to. Hopefully next month I will be almost back to normal. Hope you enjoy our Feb edition, and forgive the short editorial. Promise to do better next month. Don’t forget to send your Valentines cards!! T.T.F.N. Sue.

THE GRAPEVINE, February 2012

Part two – The Bee Gees The Bee Gees agreed with Stigwood to participate in the creation of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. It would be of the month the turning point of Compiled by Linda McGillycuddy their career. The cultural impact of both the film and the soundtrack was seismic. Three Bee Gees singles "How Deep Is Your Love", "Stayin' Alive", and "Night Fever" reached No. 1 in the United States and most countries around the world, launching the most popular period of the disco era. They also penned the song "If I Can't

Artist

Have You" which became a No. 1 hit for Yvonne Elliman,." The Gibb sound was inescapable. During an eight-month period beginning in the Christmas season of 1977, six songs written by the brothers held the No. 1 position on the US charts for 25 of 32 consecutive weeks—three of their own releases, two for brother Andy Gibb, and the Yvonne Elliman single. Fueled by the movie's success, the soundtrack broke multiple industry records, becoming the highest-selling album in recording history to that point. With more than 40 million copies sold, Saturday Night Fever is among music's top five best selling soundtrack albums. It is currently calculated as the 4th highest-selling album worldwide. In March 1978, the Bee Gees held the top 2 positions on the US Charts with "Night Fever" and "Stayin' Alive", the first time this had happened since The Beatles. Barry Gibb became the only songwriter to have four consecutive number one hits in the US breaking the John Lennon and Paul McCartney 1964 record. These songs were

Page 5

"Stayin' Alive", "Love Is Thicker than Water", "Night Fever", "If I Can't Have You". The song "Too Much Heaven" was donated by the brothers to charity. Up to 2007, this song has earned over $11 million for UNICEF. The Bee Gees' overwhelming success rose and fell with the disco bubble. By the end of 1979, disco was rapidly declining in popularity, and the backlash against disco put the Bee Gees' American career in a tailspin with Radio stations around America began promoting "Bee Gee Free Weekends". Robin and Barry Gibb released various solo albums in the 1980s but only with sporadic and moderate chart success. The brothers had continuing success behind the scenes, however, writing and producing for several artists. Songs written by the Gibbs, but largely better known through versions by other artists, include:  "Immortality" by Celine Dion  "If I Can't Have You" by Yvonne Elliman  "Chain Reaction" by Diana Ross  "Guilty" and "Woman in Love" by Barbra Streisand  "Heartbreaker" & "All the Love in the World" by Dionne Warwick  "Islands in the Stream" by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton  "Grease" by Frankie Valli Maurice, who had been the musical director of the Bee Gees during their final years as a group, died unexpectedly on 12 January 2003 at the age of 53 from a heart attack. On 20 November 2011 it was announced that Robin Gibb, at 61 years old, was diagnosed with liver cancer, a condition he became aware of several months earlier. However he is making a good recovery and is soon to release a classical concept album about the Titanic to mark the 100 year anniversary, and indeed he intends to perform at the London Premier on 10 April. At least 2,500 artists have recorded their songs. Their most popular composition is "How Deep Is Your Love", with 400 versions by other artists in existence. Among the artists who have covered their songs are Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, Al Green, Eric Clapton, Lulu, Elton John, Tom Jones, Nina Simone, Michael Bolton, Take That, and Destiny's Child. My personal favourite is Al Green singing ‘How can you mend a broken heart?’ but everyone will have their own from these exceptional songwriters who have contributed so much to music.

Javea to be the starting point of the low-cost rally that will travel through Morocco The participants will take basic goods to the towns and villages of the desert The town of Javea will be the starting point in March of the spring edition of the Maroc Challenge, a rally that runs through African territory and which is specifically aimed at amateurs with limited resources and no backing from sponsors, but who want to live a great adventure. The rally also has a charitable aspect, as the participants will be taking basic goods and materials to the people of the desert as they travel through. The first edition of this low-cost rally was held last December, when it proved to be a great success in terms of participation. In its second edition, with a full two months to go before the closing of the registration period, there are already 27 team signed up.

According to the organiser of the race, Rui Cabaço, this low cost rally is an opportunity to experience the same sensations of rallies such as the Dakar or the Panafrica, but for very little money. Seven days along a route filled with dust and stones, camping outdoors and the arriving at the dream destination: the beach of Essaoira. The rally covers 2,000 kilometres across the desserts and mountains of Morocco, both on and off road. Participants are not required to have any previous experience, just a 4x2 or 4x4 vehicle registered before 1995. With an 80- kilometre-per-hour speed limit on the off-road tracks, the competition has more to do with resistance than with speed. According to Cabaço, the real challenge is reaching the finish line with an old SUV, Fiat Panda, Seat Marbella or Peugeot 205 (which was the winner of the winter race) that has undergone some minor modifications for the race. Charity support from the company Garvalín Cabaço also pointed out that the second pillar of the Maroc Challenge is its charity labour. In the December race, the organization itself was in charge of transporting clothes,

THE GRAPEVINE, February 2012

school supplies, toys or medical supplies to the settlements and villages in the desert. Now, the Alicante-based children's shoe company, Garvalín, has joined forces with the organisation and will be sponsoring the transport of the humanitarian aide material, as well as donating 300 pairs of shoes for Moroccan children. The racer expressed his gratitude for the generosity of this sponsor, leaving the door open to further collaborations. As far as ties between the Maroc Challenge and Javea go, as well as being the place of residence of Cabaço and Juanjo Llidó, his co-driver and co-organiser, Javea is also the home town of the winners of the first edition of the Maroc Challenge, David Reynolds and Javier Gonzalez. For this reason, Javea, thanks to the collaboration of the Town Hall, was chosen to hold the first briefing session of the race. Consequently, most of the race participants in the rally, both from all over Spain and abroad, will meet up in Javea on 31st March, where they will pass the technical verifications. An enclosure will be set up for the participating teams and vehi-

cles to concentrate and the organisers will hand out the numbers and carry out the safety checks there. Following this, a motorcade will depart on route to Almeria, where they will embark for Morocco. The 'spring edition' of the Maroc Challenge, which takes place between the 31st of March and the 7th of April coinciding with the Easter holidays. The organization has decided to limit the teams to a maximum of 60 to keep the spirit of this first edition and avoid overcrowding. The route will be 90% different from the first rally. The project has the backing of the departments of Tourism and Sports, because as well as being a sporting event, the Maroc Challenge is expected to have a promotional impact for Javea. The heads of these departments, Antonio Miragall and Juan Luis Cardona, thanked the organisers for featuring Javea so prominently in this increasingly popular rally and encouraged the residents to to come out and witness the departure of the teams. Newsletter from the Javea Computer Club What have we learnt this week? 1) Never forget that a woman scorned can be a dangerous thing, especially if she can drive. Burglary in Florida (you can't make up this stuff !!) When southern Florida resident Nathan Radlich's house was burgled recently, thieves ignored his wide screen plasma TV, his VCR, and even left his Rolex watch. What they did take, however, was a "generic white cardboard box filled with a grayish-white powder." (That's the way the police report described it.) A spokesman for the Fort Lauderdale police said, that "it looked similar to high grade cocaine and they'd probably thought they'd hit the big time." Later, Nathan stood in front of numerous TV cameras and pleaded with the burglars: "Please return the cremated remains of my sister, Gertrude. She died three years ago."

3) In Javea..... a) The best place to go on Monday/Tuesday and Thursday mornings is..........JCC b) We live in paradise, even if it does occasionally rain. c) We’d forgotten how cold it can get, even if it is sunny.

The next morning, the bulletriddled corpse of a local drug dealer known as Hoochie Pevens was found on Nathan's doorstep. The cardboard box was there too; about half of Gertrude's ashes remained.

So, if it’s still cold on MONDAY come to JCC, it’s heated(!) and enjoy one of the finest things in life.........chatting with your friends.

Taped to the box was this note which said: "Hoochie sold us the bogus blow, so we wasted Hoochie. Sorry we snorted your sister. No hard feelings. Have a nice day."

NEWS fromAGENDA 21 JÁVEA \ XÁBIA

THE GRAPEVINE February 2012

Agenda 21 is a non-political process whereby inhabitants of a town can have a say in the long-term sustainable development of their community. Jávea has been part of this UN initiative since 2004, but as proceedings are mostly conducted in either Castellano and Valenciano, the authors decided that as more than half the population of Jávea consists of expatriates, it would be useful to set up a Wiki website to disseminate information in English. This column is a summary of recent events. For more information and up-to-date news, please visit; http//agenda21-xabia.wikidot.com

In the Marina Alta there are more than 20,000 empty properties and an estimated 56,000 second homes. These vacant properties enhance the impression of ghost towns, notable among which are Gata Residencial with over 300 of its 700 houses empty and up for sale, and the Via Augusta between the Port and Arenal in Jávea. Records for Dénia and Xàbia show that there are almost the same number of houses as there are inhabitants on the Padrón.

BayRadio with

Tony Myles

I am guessing that there comes a time in most people’s lives when you suddenly realise that you are not immortal. I have long been an advocate of the theory that age is more an attitude than a number. I well remember working for a sales manager in my twenties and thinking that he was close to retirement or at least into his fifties. He was actually five years older than me but led a small life with concepts and aspirations which had been handed to him and which he had accepted without question. So it was a bit of a shock when a few weeks ago life handed me a sharp reminder – “Here you go, Mate” it said “Think you’re superman do you – well have this.” Happily this proved to be no more than a sharp reminder with no long term impact. Nevertheless it is with some relief that I had a quick glance over my shoulder and afforded myself an appreciative smile that I have managed to acquire a broad and open mind and a lifetime of experiences that would be envied by many and scoffed at by some. This open approach has carried through to my very enjoyable activity on behalf of Bay Radio. These guys are untrammelled by convention and prefer to respond to listener’s opinions and demands rather than adhere to a specific formula. With this in mind we held our first Bay Radio Short Story competition with the hope that we would have sufficient interest to enable us to broadcast some entries during February. Well fortunately I had press-ganged a number of independent judges into the frame and so the deluge of entries was off-loaded to them. They spent days sifting through and reading each one and eventually managed to create a list of twelve which have now been recorded and as you read this they are being broadcast on Bay Radio to the largest English speaking radio audience in Spain. The successful authors are all delighted and despite the protestations of the judges I think that this innovation has proven successful and it is one we will repeat. My thanks to all involved and especially the Benitaxell Arts Centre who sponsored the project. HAVING MOM OVER FOR DINNER You don't even have to be a mother to enjoy this one... Brian invited his mother over for dinner. During the course of the meal, Brian's mother couldn't help but notice how beautiful Brian's roommate, Jennifer, was. Brian's Mom had long been suspicious of a relationship between Brian and Jennifer, and this had only made her more curious. Over the course of the evening, while watching the two interact, she started to wonder if there was more between Brian and Jennifer than met the eye. Reading his mom's thoughts, Brian volunteered, "I know what you must be thinking, but I assure you Jennifer and I are just roommates." About a week later, Jennifer came to Brian saying, "Ever since your mother came to dinner, I've been unable to find the beautiful silver gravy ladle. You don't suppose she took it, do you?" Brian said, "Well, I doubt it, but I'll send her an e-mail just to be sure. So he sat down and wrote: _______________________________________________ Dear Mom, I'm not saying that you "did" take the gravy ladle from the house, I'm not saying that you "did not" take the gravy ladle. But the fact remains that one has been missing ever since you were here for dinner. Love, Brian _______________________________________________ Several days later, Brian received an email back from his mother that read: _______________________________________________ Dear Son, I'm not saying that you "do" sleep with Jennifer, I'm not saying that you "do not" sleep with Jennifer. But the fact remains that if Jennifer is sleeping in her own bed, she would have found the gravy ladle by now. Love, Mom LESSON OF THE DAY - NEVER LIE TO YOUR MOTHER

ASK OSCAR

I would have to leave the car until the bill was paid, so I left the car, and took me two days to get back to him. When I picked it up the mirror had been removed for non-payment and he charged me 25 euros for each day that the car had been in the shop. I think the whole performance of this workshop is illegal and I am very frustrated about what has happened, What can I do?

Spanish born Oscar Anton Izquierdo has a degree in European and community law and a master in town planning and taxes. He lives and works in Jávea and speaks Castellano, Valenciano, French and English. Oscar is married to Mónica and is the proud dad of his little son Carlitos. Oscar has been a counsillor since 2007 and is presently the deputy mayor and responsible for managing Javea’s economy and international relations

Norman; Balcon al Mar. Hi Oscar wanted to thank you for the Asphalt in my urbanization and your management in the Town Hall. The reason for my query is a serious problem that I need your answer in Grapevine because it is possible that this can happen to other people. In the month of October I was driving down the road from Costa Nova when a mirror broke on my vehicle without hitting against anything or anyone. As the vehicle was under warranty I took it to the workshop in Denia and explained the situation. They made me sign some papers in Spanish and I left the car there. When I went to pick it up I was told that the repair was not included in the warranty and I had to pay 425 euros. Obviously I refused because the car is 9 months old and I said I would not pay for this repair and that if they wanted to claim they should do so through the Court. His reply was that

Dear Norman, I'm sorry about what you have told me. I know of many similar cases and I'm glad you have made this request because I think it can help many people. When you take your car to a workshop you must sign a work order, which specifies what they will do and the budget. Some shops do not charge when the the car is still in gurentee, the legal basis are the following articles: Article 15. Invoice and accommodation expenses"..... 2. Can only accrue living expenses when the budget made or repaired the vehicle, and made known to the user is actually not that user to the appropriate decision on the acceptance or rejection of the budget or the removal of the vehicle within three business days . In any case, such costs shall stay only when the vehicle is in local custody of the workshop and for days in excess of that period .... "Royal Decree 1457/1986 of 10 January, which regulates the industrial activity and the provision of services in the repair of motor vehicles, their equipment and components Article 1600. CIVIL CODE "He who has executed a work in movable property has the right to retain a pledge to be paid." In your case it is totally illegal is that they have removed the piece for which you took to for repair, you could even make a claim for criminal misappropriation and

theft. Prices at the Workshop should be posted in a conspicuous place and must state the price per day, if not you can file another complaint for these events. Also on the guarantee of the piece, you can file a claim against the manufacturer and do not want to spend money on the claim can do so through the office of the consumer. David from LAS LADERAS Dear Oscar I am a follower of your column and I'd like to just answer my question because I have little confidence in my tax adviser. Anyway, I was Director of Marketing at UK for over 25 years and now I'm retired in Spain, there is a company from Benissa who offered me to do a collaboration of business strategy and they would design a marketing plan. I was asked to pay a bill, as I did not know how to make them the invoice, I was sent an invoice with my name, NIE and address, she also paid the tax (VAT). I have been using this system for more than six months but I do not know the Tax consequences, my tax adviser says the same as the company says, that nothing will happen and it is al right, but I am not sure. What do I do? Dear David, when you give a service in Spain you must be under the condition of selfemployed person or

employed, in both cases you pay social security, in one case by the company and the other as it would be in your case as an independent (Self employ) , you pay. I see you're not doing this correctly, you should be registered as an autonomous and pay 250 euros every month on social security as autonomous as well as submit your VAT returns. The way you collect from this company will bring problems with Social Security and the tax office very soon as they will be should be stating what you pay and the system will check that you're not paying. I advise you if you want to continue with this work you should sign up as self employed.

sions. So much so, that context and occasion have far more to do with inherited custom and ritual- especially nowadays. Commercial interest ensures that festive occasions are heavily promoted. We are actively encouraged to buy and behave in whatever manner as being a demonstration of each and every person’s commitment and participation in the occasion. Both participation and observation are equally important as the ritual itself. No matter whether that occasion be for family, friends or community, we all like to see things being done properly. Commercial interests are aided and abetted in this process by ‘professional’ commentators in the media. Most of us will have enjoyed to Royal Wedding last year in the UK, merely as

spectators from afar of the ritual performance Wasn’t it “ Done Well”! All of this is a rather long way to consideration of wine. Do we have to, or want to follow ritual? If so, then we should accept that our choice of wine has far more to do with context and ritual. Our own individual appreciation and enjoyment of the wine is of secondary importance. Hence ‘choosing the right wine for the occasion’ has far more to do with seeing ‘things being done properly’ than the intrinsic merits of the wine. None of this is meant to decry neither the process nor the choice of wines. We may end up paying rather more than usual. But if the taste of the wine seems to satisfy both one’s outlay and experience, then surely that is double satisfaction! What we really need to do is to get hold of the relevant textbook for ‘Behavioral Science’. I expect the supply may well oversubscribed by aspirant Advertising, Marketing ‘experts and Commentators. Personally I would almost certainly enjoy the chapter(s?) on wine and its history in ritual, and how to exploit this commercially. In these more financially troubling times I mentioned previously spending all of 95céntimos in Mercadonna on their Antigon red wine. Are there perhaps classical allusions in the name? For a classic ordinary evening at home, this was a drinkable wine for the occasion. So did it fit the occasion? It was pleasant enough, but totally forgettable, like so much else. Does that matter? NO ! Gift tag by Valerie McConachy exclusively distributed through Casa del Vino in Via Agusta

The Cookery Page SAUCE MAGIC Sometimes a sauce can transform an ordinary piece of meat or fish into something quite luxurious. The hake (merluza) which I buy from Mercadonna´s frozen food cabinet, (skinned and boneless) is a good example. This recipe will feed four people.

Method Heat the oven to 180c. Butter a shallow dish, (a meat tin will do), the lay in the fillets without overlapping. Season well with salt and pepper. Pour the wine over the fish and put in the oven for 10 minutes. Lift the fish carefully onto a serving dish and keep it warm while you make the sauce. Pour the fish liquid into a saucepan and boil rapidly to reduce it by about Half. Meanwhile mix the egg yolks with the cornflour and the cream. Remove the pan from the heat and whisk in the egg mixture. Return the pan to the heat and warm through gently until thickened. Do not boil. Pour over the fish and serve immediately with rice or pasta, and vegetables of Your choice.

Ingredients 4 large fillets of hake (merluza) 300ml white wine 3 egg yolks 1tsp cornflour 225ml Nata Salt & pepper

Deacon

A British eduvation of the post-war period may have done many things but it certainly did not equip John Deacon for his arrival in Paris in 1964 as an EMI trainee. The splendours of French gastronomy came at him like a bolt of lightning. His subsequent EMI postings to Bruxelles, Beirut, Athens, Amsterdam & Dubai only made the journey the more fascinating. We hope that this experience will prove the basis for a helpful guide to readers exploring Jávea and the surrounding area. Many of his friends agree with him that muzak is one of the scourges of our time which means that the worst offenders do not feature in these listings. If it bothers you, always ask to have it turned down. Visit www.pipedown.info ... and bon appetit ! Parador end of Arenal promenade. Tel : 96 579.1600 / open daily.

This month, you will have the excuse of “Saint Valentine” to spoil the person you love. There is a say in French: “Il y a de la malchance à ne pas être aimé mais il y a du malheur à ne pas aimer”. The translation would be something like: “there is bad luck not to be loved but there is unhappiness not to love”. T h i n k about it!

Can you help? The Javea Town Hall, in collaboration with the” Cirne Foundation”, is to embark on a cataloguing campaign of all the ancient and unique heritage trees in the municipality. The purpose is to catalogue the collection of local tree specimens, not only to protect them, but also to educate about this important part of the local heritage. One of the objectives of the project is to publish a comprehensive catalogue of the local tree specimens and prepare an educational exhibition specifically aimed at schoolchildren so that they may learn to appreciate and respect the local plant heritage. A special route or tour of this network of special trees may arise in the future and be offered to interested residents and tourists on specific dates, subject to agreements with the owners. The project calls for the cooperation from residents, since many of the specimens are within private property. In this regard, all those who believe they own one of these specimens, either due to the size or historical or cultural characteristics, are asked to report them. The Town Hall wishes to assure these landowners that owning a distinctive and unique tree would not necessarily create problems other than the prohibition of uprooting it. On the contrary, it would in fact create several advantages, including the possibility for council staff to assist with pruning, maintenance and pest control.

The inventory phase will last until after the summer and will be coordinated by both the Town Hall's Department of The old town will help you to find ideas thanks to a new Environment and Agriculture at 2 Avenida Amanecer, and the campaign. Formed at the Curtis Institute of Music in 2008, the ensemble draws from the musical lineage of both the Vermeer and Guarneri String Quartets, but brings a youthful enthusiasm and musical conviction to the repertoire that is truly its own. Joseph Silverstein said of the group: "The Old City String Quartet is one of the finest string quartets I have ever heard. I expect to see the ensemble attain international acclaim." The ensemble's recording of the Mendelssohn and Debussy quartets, released in 2009 by the audiophile label Unipheye Music©, was awarded the Blue Moon award by the highly respected audiophile website 6moons.com. AMEN, AMEN !! Why is it that our children can't read a Bible in school, but they can in prison? The hit ITV sitcom Benidorm is set to return to television screens in the UK at the end of January, and the new series is said to have the same drama that we have seen in previous seasons. The next season is going to show how a new hotel manager has come in and is planning to make the hotel that the series centres around into an altogether classier establishment. Many of the guests do not welcome this change which involves them being required to dress more smartly and the karaoke being banned. The guests plan to overthrow the new manager, who took over from the previous character played by Crissy Rock. The press has been told, “The new manager thinks that the hotel is too tacky and she wants to make it a posher establishment. She is going to face a lot of trouble from the guests who want it to remain as it is. The new manager is played by Sherrie Hewson who was previously been involved in Coronation Street as well as Loose Women. Don't forget to look out for a special guest appearance by the suave and debonair David Mills - don't blink or you'll miss it

A True Story from the Jacksonville FL Police Dept. A man goes to a party and has too much to drink. His friends plead with him to let them take him home. He says no he only lives a mile away. About five blocks from party, the police pull him over for weaving and ask him to get out of the car and walk the line. Just as he starts, the police radio blares out a notice of a robbery taking place in a house just a block away The police tell the man to stay put, they will be right back and they hop a fence and run down the street to the robbery. The guy waits and waits and finally decides to drive home. When he gets there, he tells his wife he is going to bed, and to tell anyone who might come looking for him that he has the flu and has been in bed all day. A few hours later the police knock on the door. They ask if Mr. Joe is there and his wife says yes. They ask to see him and she replies that he is in bed with the flu and has been there all day. The police have his driver's license. They ask to see his car and she asks why. They insist on seeing his car, so she takes them to the garage. She opens the door. There sitting in the garage is the police car, with all its lights still flashing. True story: Told by the driver at his first AA meeting.

THE GRAPEVINE, February 2012

Virtually Jávea Where to start? Obviously printed media is extremely important - this article in the Grapevine for example . Over the next week you are likely to pick up a couple of weekly free papers and might also buy a paper or magazine. The types of printed material you read - which you keep and which you don’t - are important to every advertiser. Daily papers are extremely ephemeral, so tend to contain offers relevant only to that day or the next few. Weeklies are usually kept two weeks until the next-but-one arrives (a bit like a fallback, part of the ‘just in case I need it’ principle) but monthly magazines are often kept much longer than their four to eight-week slot, not least as they often contain information relevant for long periods. Each time a paper or magazine is read or re-read, passed on or shared, it is an extra opportunity for advertisers to hit the right note or simply to build reputation. However, printed media is not the only means by which business is promoted here. Numerous local social groups are active on Facebook for example: Jávea Connect, Denia Connect, Sell your Stuff Spain. Many restaurants, associations and clubs (and political parties) are accessible from Facebook too... plus Marina Alta Business Club has its own group for members and friends. Group pages act like mini-Blogs, but are less frightening as, managed inside Facebook, they are very, very easy to use and enjoy. There is also Facebook Advertising, along the side of the screen, using geographically topical advertising based on your own settings. In June 2010 Neilsons Online estimated that there were 29,093,984 Internet users in Spain representing 62.6% of the population. I suspect a lot of

them are along the Costas just looking at how many Jávea and Denia Facebook users there are! There are always new websites coming along, some take off quite quickly. As an example, barely a couple of weeks old, www.auctionyourstuffspain.com based in Jávea, already has a large following, much aided by no fees being charged for selling anything on it - from houses to children’s clothes both new and secondhand. As long as the community spirit behind it continues to allow it to be used free, it will, hopefully, continue to grow in popularity. Of course, there are lots of services based in Jávea that can be bought, paid for and used online; even UK TV services are available at €10 a month for a full range of UK (and US) channels www.uktv4u.com. The irony is that, with all this newage growth in Spain, it often needs printed advertising to draw attention to it, giving it reputational value and authenticity and showing that it is locally sourced and not run by someone faceless from several thousand miles away. We, for instance, are in the middle of launching a ‘one stop shop’ so that Club members can display and sell their services and goods directly to you online, but before www.mabc.es takes off and its associated businesses benefit, I am conscious that it will need to be advertised in the papers to demonstrate that it really is local… Gaile Griffin Peers - www.mabusinessclub.com - Marina Alta Business Club Branches, Javea & Denia, offer up to three business networking meetings a month.

THE GRAPEVINE, February 2012

with Dr Christoph Semler

Dr. Christoph Semler qualified as a doctor at the University of Frankfurt and then specialised in General Practice in the UK. He is a Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners, holds a Diploma from the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, a Diploma in Child Health Surveillance. He opened his private practice in Jávea in 2001. Dr Semler is fluent in English, Spanish and French and has a working knowledge of Dutch. Dear doctor, for a long time now my wife of 64 years of age has been suffering from restless legs at night. It was diagnosed by her GP back in the UK quite a number of years ago. When we moved here it got better initially but now it is back to what it was like in England. Her GP gave her different typs of medication, for a while we thought that magnesium dispersable tablets helped her, but they do not do so any longer. I can feel how she suffers with her legs at night, often she has got to get up and walk or sit in a lounge chair in the middle of the night. Occasionally she takes a sleeping tablet and then it is better, but she does not want to take them too often as she is concerned she might get hooked on them. Is there nothing we can do for her? Dear Albert, there might well be something we can do for her, in fact, I am quite certain. Restless leg syndrom (RLS) is a not unfrequent medical condition. Medical textbooks quote figures ranging from 4-8% of the population experiencing this unpleasent condition.

To properly make a diagnosis of RLS a number of symptoms must be there: the overwhelming urge to move your legs, the fact that it occurs at rest, most often at night and is quickly relieved by movements. It is not a tingling sensation or the famous pins and needles, it is a madding drive to just move you legs in any way: bend knees or ankles, get out of bed and walk about or even do elaborate gymnastics right in bed in the middle of the night. One does not really know where this illness comes from, where exactly in the body the fault lies. Almost certainly it is not a leg illness but a fault in the centre of the brain that deals with control of body motions and coordination. There is an interesting relation to the iron metabolism in that lack of iron is often found in RLS sufferes. One of the tests done on affecetd patients is to check their iron stores. Often replacing the iron can help improve symptoms. Unfortunately and paradoxically, an iron overload can also be found in people with RLS. So do not just buy iron supplements and give it a try, there ought to be a proper

blood analysis first. Putting even more iron in a body already overloaded with iron is really bad. At the same time as testing for iron stores other markers will be checked in the blood as well. Lack of certain vitamins, too much sugar in the blood, rheumatic illness, kidney illness or thyroid illness can also cause RLS. You mention that your wife finds respite from her restless legs when she takes a sleeping tablet. That is a common response in sufferes. It used to be, and often still is, one of the main treatment options for restless legs: sleeping tablets or certain tranquilizers help affected people find good restful sleep. Whether this happens through a genuine effect on the still unknown cause of the illness or just through shutting one up is unclear. But it works. For many patients the restless legs are not a daily –better nightly- occurence on a regular basis, rather they are affected in waves of bad nights and then are spared for others. Under therse circumstances it might well be helpful to take either a sleeping tablet or a weak tranquilizer and just ride it out. The drawback is that one can get accustomed to using either and then find it difficult to sleep without. Here a discussion with your doctor weighing up the pros and cons is most important. For a few years now one suspects that a certain subcentre of the brain is somehow involved in generating this terrible urge to move one´s legs in RLS sufferes. There also seems to be a connection to a well known neurological illness, namely Parkinson´s disesae. So clever doctors have tried

medication that works for Parkinson´s on RLS affected patients, and, horray, it did also work there. So nowadays in patients badly affected by RLS there exists a strong treatment options with a class of tablets called dopamin agonists. A fairly long list of different tablets has been drawn up, there will be one particular type for each individual patient. Here your wife would have to consult with her GP to find the most appropriate one for her. Talking about tablets, there are a number of different types of medication which can actually cause the symptoms of RLS. Amongst them a tablets for nausea or certain stomach problems (motilium is a well known one), a fair number of over the counter antihistaminics can also cause RLS as can different types of antidepressants, older and newer style ones. Your wife would not be taking one of these by any chance? So, let´s sum up: there are certain blood tests your wife should have, if these test are all normal, then I really am certain her doctor will find a tablet that will restore her good night´s sleep.

SATELLITE KNOW HOW

Richard Pollock Consultant Electronic Engineer Two weeks ago I was contacted with regarding the expected performance of a 2 Metre Satellite Dish and it was a Javea address! These days it’s quite unusual to be asked to check out the performance of a 2Metre Sat Dish or for that matter a 1’8/1.9 as its seems generally accepted that a Satellite Dish should be at least a 2.4 Metres in size in the Javea area and that also it has to be ensured that it is a’Genuine Fringe Area’ type. Many people have been caught out by having a 2.4 metre type of poor specification or even worse, a copy of the real thing, not forgetting quality Satellite Dishes that in transport or installation have been damaged, leaving the Client with a ‘Distorted Satellite Dish Face, yes, it does happen, I have inspected several over the last twelve months!!! Geoff and I decided to visit as it seemed an interesting challenge. On arrival the owner explained that only three

months ago he had called in the original supplier as he was not receiving several T.V. stations, the main offender being BBC1 which disappeared before 11 a.m. In the morning! Not a very good starting point as we were then told the LNB had been changed and the Satellite Dish had been aligned for maximum performance, as mentioned all within three months!!! Our first check is a physical examination to see if there are any obvious damage to the Face Plate, in particular, to the surround rim, if we spot damage then it proves that somewhere along the way it has been the subject of poor handling at some point in its life, floor standing types can be given a good bending by a wheelbarrow etc been caught by a gardener! This Sat Dish looked O.K.

ings using our Promax Satfinder, after logging these readings we then checked the alignment paying particular attention the Signal to Noise (C/N) and Bit Error Rate(BER). Both were well below the expected results and were quite disappointing. It was then decided to replace the LNB, on removing the owners LNB we examined it in detail along with the owner, all three of us agreed that when compared with our replacement, in its 3 months of life it had suffered, I must say it gave every appearance of being much older ? We also had a quick look at the Coaxial feed cable and after examination advised the owner that at least two different makes of cable had been used and all were of poor quality, this would not help with the transfer of signals as they would offer significant losses to the received signal at the Satellite Receiver end of things and of course having several joints in the cable would also reduce the total performance.

At this point we fitted the new LNB and as each LNB has its own individual characteristics we again completed a full alignment and included We connected our Test adjusting the Focal Length Equipment and took severand Skew Angle, again al readings on our Promax these are very important. Prodig 5 Analyser and We were rewarded by a then confirmed these read-

massive increase in the resultant readings and we asked the owner if he could try its performance out over a twenty four hour period at the same time explaining that as in this area of Spain as the signal pattern can vary over a few Kilometres it would be difficult to predict the result, however we assured him it would be much better than before. Some 24 hours later the owner was contacted and was delighted with the results as now his BBC1 performance had increased from failing Mid Morning to still being operational at 11 P.M. Of course it will sometimes fall off before 11 P.M. and if the conditions are better last longer, our signals here in Eastern Spain are very weak and as we wait for a replacement Astra Satellite to be launched in the next two years, its going to be a nail biting time for all those involved in delivering good quality signals. For those requiring further information, please check out my Web Site. I will always try and answer your problems via e-mail, however with some of the more complex problems, without conducting a 'Field Test' which involves a home visit and of course conducting a series of test it is impossible to reach a conclusion. JPG Computer talk

Grapevine@jpg-assistencia.com telephone: 644 46 41 49

Hi Everyone! Let’s continue exploring what comes in Microsoft’s new Operating System Package, Windows 8. On the last post we took a peek at some of the new layout specs, and today we’re about to go a bit deeper into the actual functioning of the software. When you install the software, you can choose to log on using an email address and a password or just with a standard user name & password as until now. If we choose the first option, your basic screen apps come with you. Your connected account is like a portable, personal PC that appears on any Windows 8based PC you’re using. This means that when you sign in with your connected email account to another PC running Windows 8, your apps and settings go with you, so it’s just like you’re using your own PC. You’ll also be signed in to all of the websites you were signed in to. You can continue your task from where you left it no matter where you are. These apps are downloadable from the new Windows Store and can work together, meaning that communicate between them, showing all your pictures from different places (websites included) in one place! Also they remain running on the background when your computer is on standby, meaning your apps don’t need time to catch up once you log on again. Windows 8 also will arrive with Internet Explorer 10 app, also designed to work

perfectly well on touch screens. They promise faster performance, increased security protection and higher hardware acceleration. Your sites are at the centre of the screen and the navigation bar appears only when you want it, so there’s more room for your sites. The touch keyboard is intelligently integrated into the browser and only appears when required. Still, there is also a classic Browser option for those who take a little longer to adapt to new formats. Earlier I mentioned the new Windows Store. This is an online store that will feature apps we might be familiar with and others designed specifically for this new Operating System. They assure it’ll be easy to find the apps we want, from exciting games, to productivity tools already known on Windows. These apps are grouped in familiar categories; frequently downloaded apps are highlighted and show how other users ratings for the ones they have purchased. Obviously, on most of these apps there will be a test version so you can try it before buying. Once you’ve decided, you can buy it online and install it on up to five Windows 8 PCs. Thinking of advanced users, they have increased the list of settings options, for example in the usage of multimonitor setups. Using multiple monitors is now totally flexible. New options allow you to display the Start screen with the mentioned apps on one monitor and the

Page 31

traditional desktop on the other, for example. Also you can display different desktop backgrounds on each monitor or stretch an image across both screens. There are also options to have duplicate or unique task bars on each monitor. Regarding the file management, the new Explorer should make file navigation and common file management tasks straight forward. The new ribbon will arrange the Explorer’s rich functionality, surfacing previously buried features and adding new commands like ISO mounting and single-window move or copy. This file explorer has recovered a previous favourite demanded by many users, due to its assistance: the Up button. And last, they have improved the copy experience so view and manage all file operations can be performed in one single place. Continuing with features that advanced users will enjoy, special mention for the new Task Manager has to be made. Operations are much easier now and we now have a single dashboard where to control the PC so we always know what’s going on with it. Tiles in different colours help finding items that are using the bulk of a resource, for example. Now it’s easier to efficiently keep track of what is happening in your system and in real time, giving detailed information on processes, applications, and history. All on one screen. And finishing for today,

Microsoft assures that basic maintenance tasks can now be completely automatic if we configure them that way, minimizing the stress produced when we are continuously prompted with a required reboot request after an update, for example. All for today! Log back on for more on the next issue!! Please find our contact details on our advert in this edition; in case you have any questions or queries, we can assure a quick and professional reply. If these queries are of general benefit, we will post the reply on further editions of the Grapevine so they can be for everybody’s benefit. Also, feel free to visit our new Facebook page, where we will try to keep you all posted on latest news about computers and the world around them. Also you’ll find a link to the Grapevine’s website where you’ll find the latest edition for online reading. KIRA crossbreed DOB 15.7.09 40cm Kira,s owner could no longer keep her and her friend as he now lives in a flat and the neighbours were complaining about them when they were playing! She is a very funny dog loves people and is very playful. ENRICO CROSSBREED dob 1.11.11. 57cm Enrico was brough to us by his owner who said he was too strong on the lead. This is typical of people who do not train their dogs and lack experience. This really is not a very sensible reason to bring a dog to the shelter. If you are looking for a young active and loving dog and can spare some time to train him Enrico could be the perfect dog for you. We are sure he would soon learn how to behave on the lead. DIEGO Crossbreed DOB 15.07.09 57cm Who said that only pure breed dogs can be beautiful? Diego must be one of the prettiest dog we have ever seen and we do not have a clue as to what breed he is! He is a kind and loving dog, still young and eager to learn new things. Just come to our shelter and have a look, we are sure you will fall in love with him as we did.

BACH FLOWER REMEDIES FOR HORSE AND RIDER. Bach Flower remedies are 100% natural and help us and our horses find equilibrium within our emotional body. They are not a drug, they are not tranquilizers, they have the same natural vibration as our emotion in balance. Bach Flowers were discovered by Dr. Edward Bach in the 1930’s. He worked as a doctor and surgeon in London, and by observing his patients, their characters, personality, their emotional state and how this affected illness, he began to investigate further. One thing led to another until he discovered and produced 38 Bach Flower remedies plus 1 emergency remedy. 38 remedies for 38 emotions….fear, depression, anger, worry, guilt, impatience, feeling overwhelmed, lack of self esteem…….these are only a few. 1 remedy= Rescue Remedy for emergency situations. This remedy is composed of 5 the 38 remedies. This remedy is specific for traumatic/shock emergency situations. So, how can these remedies help us as riders and our horses? Let’s start with us; Humans are emotional beings, and many emotions are suppressed, or out of balance due to life situations, upbringing, influences by other people etc etc. When our emotions are out of balance it affects our outlook on life, our relationship with other people, with our horse, our work and our perspective on situations, without mentioning how it affects our physical and mental body too. Let’s look at this concept with an example: For example; a woman “ Mary”, who has 2 children, must get them ready and take them school, then rush off to work, pick the kids up again, take them home, prepare them some tea, before she can go to see her horse and do some riding. She likes dressage. She is a person who likes to do things correctly, “how one is expected to do things”. When she gets to the stables, she is feeling tired and down, slightly annoyed that she always has to do so many things. She takes her horse, brushes, tacks him up, also in a rush, but trying to be as perfect as possible. She feels more annoyed because she forgot to take her tack home to clean. She takes her horse into the menagerie and starts to ride. The horse is frisky…he always is but this day even more so. He is a young horse and needs plenty of exercise. She gets annoyed at the horse because she does not want to be fighting with him…they must get on and practice dressage..They have a competition next week, there’s no time for fiddling about!! The horse is just being a horse, he’s happy to be out, he wants to work but he doesn’t understand what his rider wants of him: He feels her tense, sharp, jerky, changing aids constantly and she is even shouting at him. This goes on for half an hour until Mary decides enough is enough, she gets off her horse in a temper and puts him in his stable. She

goes home, but on her way home she starts feeling guilty; “my poor horse, he doesn’t understand, why did I shout at him, I shouldn’t get cross with him, I’m fed up with having so much to do, I can’t go on with this..It’s all too much “. Let’s look at Mary’ emotions: Firstly Mary is feeling overwhelmed with all the responsibilities she has, from her life situation and also from her own expectations. She is a person who likes to do things as “correctly “as possible, and if she doesn’t this makes her annoyed. When Mary takes her horse into the menagerie, she is impatient, and angry, and when she goes home in the car she starts to feel guilty, plus her feeling of being overwhelmed with responsibilities comes over her again. Mary’s main emotional imbalance is feeling overwhelmed with responsibilities and her need to do things “correctly “, which in turn lead her to other emotional imbalances like impatience , anger and guilt. Remedies that would help Mary: Elm, Rock Water, Impatiens, Pine How can Bach Flower remedies help our horses? Horses also are emotional beings. Many people don’t realize to what extent horses suffer due emotional issues and imbalances. Horses are herd animals. They need company of other horses, they need to touch other horses. Horses also would spend all day walking and munching away at food. They can walk miles in a day, just ambling around looking for food and water. They would play, roll, get wet if it rained, huddle up together and put their backs to the wind if it were windy. They would also learn rules, hierarchy and respect . All this is and so much more is taken away from horses as soon as we put them in stables and semi confinement. Some horses are luckier than others and have the possibility to live out 24/7 with a herd in a natural environment, but sadly for the majority they don’t even have contact with the horse in the stable next door!. Many horses develop behaviors like wind sucking, weaving, crib biting, aggressive behavior and many more behaviors that people would call ‘undesirable or bad behavior’…this is mainly due to emotional /psychological imbalance. What does the human do? Get angry with the horse, puts a collar on its neck, bars across the door, punishes the animal for its behavior, and more severe or hard training, but this does not solve the emotional issue, if anything it makes things worse. Horses pick up on their environment, on the people who are around them, the person who rides them. Not only do they have their own emotional issues, they also pick up on people’s emotions, and if we take the example above, Mary’s horse was put under stress while been ridden, without understanding what she wanted of him. This led him to be confused and depending on the horse’s character and sensitivity it could have led him into flight mode and fear. Horses are very sensitive, they are intelligent and have a memory. Many situations they have lived become a trauma imbedded in the psyche, and if left unattended to can become the reason of other behaviors or issues. Horses are animals, individuals, with their own personality. This must always be taken into account. What disturbs or affects one horse does not necessarily affect another. Horses have different genes, have different imprint, have been influenced dif- Fleur (Flor) Conway: ferently, they have been kept differently, Holistic Therapist Animals fed differently. T HE GRAPEVINE, February 2012

SPANISH EXPLAINED

by Teacher Writer Cathy Perez Pinto CATHY: Buenos días a todos. (Good morning everyone.) ¿Cómo estáís? (How are you all?) ¿Qué tal hacéis frente a este tiempo tan frío? (How are you coping with this very cold weather?) DEREK: Hemos tenido una ola de frío siberiana y me dicen que es la peor en 56 años. ¿Es verdad? (We have had a Siberian cold spell and I have been told that it is the worst for 56 years. Is this true?) CATHY: Sí, eso dicen. (Yes, that’s what they are saying.) Hace ahora 56 años de la histórica ola de frío de febrero 1956. (It’s now 56 years since the historic cold spell of February 1956.) Muchos consideraban entonces que fue de tal envergadura y duración que habría que retroceder a la pequeña edad glacial para encontrar un acontecimiento semejante. (At that time many people thought that it was so extensive and so long that you would have to go back to the minor ice age to find similar conditions.) Aquel mes de febrero quedó fuertemente marcado por dos intensísimas invasiones de aire polar continental, seguidas por una tercera algo menos intensa. (That month of February was deeply affected by two extremely intense attacks of continental polar air, followed by a third somewhat less intense.) ROSIE: ¿Afectó a toda España o sólo algunos sitios? (Did it affect the whole of Spain or just some places?) CATHY: En la mayor parte de la Península se registraron bajísimas temperaturas mínimas durante muchos días que, para un gran número de lugares, supusieron las mínimas

absolutas desde el inicio de las medidas termométricas. (Throughout most of the Peninsula extremely low minimum temperatures were recorded for a great many days which, for very many places, meant the lowest ever since temperatures first started to be recorded.) En muchos sitios se registraron temperaturas negativas en casi todos los días del mes, y en los más fríos, las temperaturas medias diarias resultaron negativas todos los días del mes. (In many places below zero temperatures were registered almost every day of the month and in the coldest places the average daily temperature was below zero every day of the month.) Las temperaturas medias mensuales fueron inferiores a las normales en toda España. (The average monthly temperatures were below normal throughout Spain.) Fue el mes de febrero más frío del periodo desde 1901 hasta 1956 y comparable únicamente por sus temperaturas bajas al mes de enero de 1914. (It was the coldest month of February during the period which went from 1901 to 1956 and was only comparable to the low temperatures in the month of January 1914.) JENNY: ¿Nos puedes proporcionar algunas estadísticas? (Can you provide us with some statistics? CATHY: Sí, como no.(Yes, of course.) (The lowest temperature ever recorded in Spain since measurements were started was 32 degrees below zero in the Pyrenees in

Lérida, although in the very highest part it probably reached 50 degrees below zero.) Algunas otras temperaturas mínimas registradas aquel mes fueron menos doce grados en San Sebastián y en Cuenca, menos ocho grados en Bilbao, Granada y Zaragoza, menos nueve en Madrid y menos siete en Valencia. (Some of the other minimum temperatures registered that month were twelve degrees below zero in San Sebastián and Cuenca, eight degrees below in Bilbao, Granada and Zaragoza, nine below in Madrid and seven below in Valencia.) En Alicante sólo bajó a 4,6 grados bajo cero. (In Alicante it only went down to 4.6 degrees below zero.) ROBERT: Supongo que esto no ocurrió solo en España. (I suppose this didn’t only happen in Spain.) CATHY: No, por supuesto que no. (No, of course not.) La invasión de aire frío afectó a toda Europa con temperaturas mínimas de 35º bajo cero en San Petersburgo, 32º bajo cero en Innsbruck, 25º bajo cero en Varsovia y Estocolmo y once grados bajo cero en Paris. (The attack of cold air affected the whole of Europe with minimum temperatures of 35º below zero in Saint Petersburg, 32º below zero in Innsbruck, 25º below zero in Warsaw and Stockholm and eleven degrees below zero in Paris.) VALERY: ¿Cuál ha sido el año más cálido en la historia de España? (Which has been the hottest year in the history of Spain?) CATHY: Os vais a sorprender. (You’re going to be surprised.) Fue el año 2011. (It was the year 2011.) El año 2006 había sido el más cálido hasta entonces. (The year 2006 had been the hottest until then.)

(Although temperatures were above the national average practically throughout the whole year, the highest temperatures in 2011 were registered at the end of the second ten days in August, reaching the ultimate level of 42.5 in Seville and Badajoz.) En otoño también se produjeron récords insólitos como los 36,5 grados que se registraron en Jerez el 12 de octubre. (Autumn also produced unusual records like the 36.5 degrees recorded in Jerez on the 12th. of October.) JOHN: ¿Se están produciendo récords de temperaturas máximas difíciles de batir? (Are record maximum temperatures being produced which are going to be difficult to beat?) CATHY: Se está poniendo el listón muy alto pero, a la vista de lo que estamos viendo, es posible que continúen superándose. (Very high levels are being set but, according to what we are seeing, it is possible that they are going to continue exceeding themselves.) En 2011 los meses de abril y mayo produjeron temperaturas disparadas. (In 2011 April and May produced surprisingly high temperatures.) DON: ¿Y qué nos dices de la lluvia. (What can you tell us about the rainfall?) CATHY: En cuanto a las lluvias, el año 2011 resultó algo más seco de lo normal en el conjunto de España. (As far as the rainfall is concerned 2011 turned out to be drier than usual throughout Spain.) La precipitación media en España alcanzó los 555 mm que quedó en torno a un 7% por debajo del valor normal. (The average rainfall in Spain reached 555mm which ended up at about 7% below the usual amount.) Bueno; ya está para hoy. (Well; that’s it for today.) Hasta la próxima vez y abrigaos. (See you next time and wrap up.)
