Javea will soon allow taxpayers to design their own payment schedules

Javea crime rate below Provincial average

Taxpayers will be able to perform 'virtual' calculations of their payments Javea Town Council has approved a modification of the Tax Ordinance that will allow the taxpayers to design their own payment schedule. According to explanations by the Councillor for Finance, Oscar Anton, until now, the taxpayers were only able to pay their municipal rates at fixed times: rubbish collection and vehicles in April and IBI in October. In addition to being an inflexible system, the Town Hall concentrates much of its income in a two- month period each year. At present the council has to borrow to cover monthly expenditure, which generates interest payments. continued on page 4

Etta James

was an American singer whose style spanned a variety of music genres including blues, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, soul, gospel and jazz. Starting her career in of the month the mid-1950s, she Compiled by Linda McGillycuddy gained fame with hits such as "At Last", and "I'd Rather Go Blind" for which she wrote the lyrics. James is regarded as having bridged the gap between rhythm and blues and rock and roll, and is the winner of six Grammys and 17 Blues Music Awards. Rolling Stone ranked James number 22 on their list of the 100

Artist

Greatest Singers of All Time and number 62 on the list of the 100 Greatest Artists. Etta James was brought up by numerous caregivers as she was born to a 14 year old mother who was largely absent. Etta received her first professional vocal training at the age of five from James Earle Hines. She began listening to doo-wop and was inspired to form a girl group. Johnny Otis took the group under his wing, helping them sign to Modern Records . James recorded "Dance with Me, Henry". Its success gave the group an opening spot on Little Richard's national tour. Etta James had her first hit single when she was 15 years of age and went steady with B.B. King when she was 16. Etta believed the hit single "Sweet Sixteen" by B.B. King was about her. When her contract with Modern came up in 1960, she decided to sign with Chess Records. Leonard Chess had envisioned James as a classic ballad stylist who had potential to cross over to the pop charts and soon surrounded the singer with violins and other string instru-

ments. Her debut album, At Last!, was released in late 1960 and was noted for its varied choice in music from jazz standards to blues numbers to doo-wop and rhythm and blues (R&B). The album also included James' future classic, "I Just Want to Make Love to You" and "A Sunday Kind of Love" and included what was to become her signature song, "At Last”. Her personal life throughout her career was marked by drug addiction and a string of arrests, whilst going in and out of drug rehabilitation centres. Etta James had once been considered one of the most overlooked blues and R&B musicians in American music history. It was not until the early 1990s when James' earlier classic music was included in commercials including, most notably, ‘I Just Wanna Make Love to you’ and she began receiving major industry awards from the Grammys and the Blues Foundation that she began to receive wide recognition. In 2008, James was portrayed by Beyoncé Knowles in the film, Cadillac Records, loosely based on the rise and fall of James' label of 18 years, Chess Records, In April 2009, the 71-year-old James made her final television appearance performing "At Last" during an appearance on Dancing with the Stars. James had two sons, both musicians who have performed with their mother for many years—Donto on drums and Sametto on bass guitar. She was diagnosed with leukemia and she died on January 20, 2012, just five days before her 74th birthday. Her death came three days after that of Johnny Otis, the man who discovered her in the 1950s. Singers Stevie Wonder and Christina Aguilera each gave a musical tribute at her funeral. Already there are disagreements about her estate between her husband and her two sons. It seems that Etta James did not have much peace in life and cannot have it even in death, but her legacy as a soul singer of heart and honesty will endure and she will be the benchmark for comparison with other singers who follow in her footsteps. continued from page 1 After analysing crime data and the results of the police response, the Councillor for Public Safety has prudently rated them as "excellent", as they are well below the average for the province and have been maintaining this trend for years. "This is not coincidence but the result of the coordination, collaboration and rigour with which the police forces work for our town," stated Ortolá, who added that these tools "continue to make Jávea a safe place where residents can exercise their rights and liberties." In this regard, the Councillor strongly supports the continuity of the Safety Board, the body in charge of coordinating security matters between the central, regional and local administrations and is a part of the local security plan. The statistic made available at the meeting puts the crime rate in Javea at 22.76 per thousand inhabitants, ten points below the provincial average of 32.51 per thousand inhabitants. While crimes rose slightly in 2011 (739) compared to 2010 (725), there has been a decrease in the number of misdmeanors, falling from 919 in 2010 to 882 in 2011. Police efficiency has increased with the number of arrests increasing from 189 in 2010 to 272 in 2011. Police have also increased the the number of case files and investigations, rising from 255 in 2010 to the 653 recorded in 2011. The First Deputy of the Government expressed his satisfaction at the success of the security services in Jávea and considered the Safety Board initiative as “very good and with results that makes it recommendable for other towns to apply." Alberto Martinez Diaz indicated that Javea is the first meeting he has attended since being appointed as Deputy and that his intention is to attend the Safety Board meetings of every municipality that invites him, seeing these as a way to establish direct contact with municipal officials. He also showed his willingness to cooperate with Javea in all matters under his authority or having to do with state agencies. This was also confirmed by the Mayor, José Chulvi, who expressed his gratitude for the prompt and excellent attention given by the Sub-Delegation. Chulvi ended by emphasizing the importance of safety for a tourist town like Javea.

THE GRAPEVINE, March 2012

The Advisory Committee on Town Planning and the Environment Proposes a New Policy for Terraces The Advisory Committee on Town Planning and the Environment of Javea addressed the ordinance that will regulate the occupation of the streets, currently under review. At the meeting, various spokesmen for business, caterers and neighbourhood associations, political groups and other professional sectors expressed their views on the limits they believe should be set on the terraces with chairs and tables in the streets and squares, that make them compatible with the right to the use of public spaces that all citizens are entitled to. One of the main conclusions drawn from the session is that all the groups involved in the Advisory Committee are against the authorization of tables and chairs that occupy the streets or parking spaces. These terraces, known popularly as “corralitos" or "pens", have proliferated in recent months, especially in areas near the beaches. It was also pointed out yesterday that have no consistency and provide an overall negative and disorderly image. Some tables are mounted directly on the floor; some on platforms; some are surrounded by potted plants and others surrounded by fences. Add to this the problem of reducing the chances of finding parking in the commercial and entertainment areas. As a result, it was agreed to ask the Local Council to authorise terraces only in pedestrian streets, plazas and pavements. In all cases the terraces should not exceed 50% of the pavement (with a limit of 6 meters) and at least 1.80 meters to allow pedestrians to pass comfortably. Tables and chairs will be removed at night and, at the request of the establishment owners, may be left stacked in specific points in front of the business, provided they do not interfere in any festivity or social event. Another conclusion drawn from the monographic session on street occupation was the need to regulate the style of the furniture that is installed in public places, banning the use tables and chairs containing advertising, and seeking greater harmony in colours, preferably white or natural wood colour; bamboo, wicker or white, blue or maroon canvas. Hours and Sanctions Licenses for terraces should be requested for the entire year, not to exceed the opening hours of the authorised activity on the premises, whether it is a café, restaurant or pub, and not to exceed the limits of the area they have applied to occupy. In this regard, the Town Hall intends to mark the boundaries of each terrace with a small plate on the floor in order to facilitate the compliance controls made by the local police. With regards to sanctions, the Regional Government was circulated a memorandum insisting on the need to toughen these to ensure compliance with the ordinance. They further suggest that, in addition to monetary fines, that many times do not pose a serious threat to restaurateurs, the Local Council should reserve the right to withdraw the license or temporarily close the terrace. Both the chairman of the board, Pere Sapena, and the Councillor in charge of Street Occupation, Paco Torres, also present, have taken the demands of the citizens on board and incorporated them into the draft ordinance. According to Sapena, the amended ordinance will be further debated at the next meeting of the Advisory Committee before it is taken to the Full Local Council.

THE GRAPEVINE March 2012

Agenda 21 is a non-political process whereby inhabitants of a town can have a say in the long-term sustainable development of their community. Jávea has been part of this UN initiative since 2004, but as proceedings are mostly conducted in either Castellano and Valenciano, the authors decided that as more than half the population of Jávea consists of expatriates, it would be useful to set up a Wiki website to disseminate information in English. Town Hall and Navarro-Rubio family vie for posession of "The Minister's House"

A group of students of the University of Alicante visited Javea yesterday to study the experience of the “Xàbia Histórica” Open Commercial Centre and its relations with the Local Council. The students, who are enrolled in a master's degree program for Local Development Agents, listened to the Manager of the business network, Jaume Serra and the senior official for commerce, Carles Jover, who explained how the Association is working to increase the competitiveness of the small and medium-sized commerces, promoting associations, improving the shopping district and promoting the Old Town with the support of the Local Council. They spoke about the initiatives such as the decoration of the shop windows of empty premises, tapas fairs, craft or stock fairs and the contest of corners and balconies with charm. A few of the ideas that the Association has for future self-financing were also discussed.

The Finca de San Rafael, also known as "The Minister's House" is situated on the edge of the sea next to the Parador on the "Punta del Arenal" - Arenal's rocky headland. Several times in the past, Xàbia Town Hall has requested this property to be transfered to public ownership and earmarked for public use because it is located slap bang on top of an ancient Roman fish factory. The situation is complex because of the involvement of the owners, the Town Hall and the Ministry of Environment (Costas). Jávea Town Hall must justify its position by April 2012. €11,000 saved by getting rid of water dispensers Proposal on Saladar put to Valencian Parliament The polictical group Compromís" has put forward a motion to the Valencian Parliament that the Saladar should be declared a protected area. According to the motion, several experts in botany, archeology and tourism agree on the importance of preserving this area, highlighting the need to preserve the flora which includes three species on the Valencian Catalogue of Threatened Plants, namely Parentucellia viscose, Limonium interjectum and Cressa cretica. Moreover, four ecosystems found in the Saladar are protected by the Habitats Directive of the European Union. Ideas to promote local economy include a local currency The second meeting of the Mesa de Empleo,a think tank to develop ideas to promote the local economy came up with a number of interesting ideas including a local currency the "XàbiaEuro" to encourage residents to shop locally (See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_currency); housing for senior citizens with all services laid on using perhaps an unsold development in the Via Augusta; a catalogue of work and apprenticeships suitable for young school drop-outs; learning by doing programmes, (following the example set by Vilafranca), geared towards local conditions e.g. sustainable forestry, expert cookery using local products, waiters knowing several lan-

The Local Executive Board of Javea has agreed to buy a new vehicle for public road maintenance because the current vehicle is in prercarious condition. They also cancelled the contract for the water dispensers located in the various municpal offices. According to explanations by the Mayor, José Chulvi, an 11-month long monitoring of this service has shown it to cost the Town Hall 11,900 euros. Therefore, in lines with the savings policy in place in the Town Hall, the decision was reached to remove the dispensers at end of this month. Another agreement made at Monday morning's meeting was to sign up to the maintenance service of the "virtual environments", an ICT tool which facilitates the mobility of town hall officials, allowing them to keep the same telephone extension and computer regardless of where they are located within the building. Unauthorised soil dumping denounced Residents of the Saladar spotted lorries dumping mounds of soil on an area of the Saladar which was in the process of re-establishing its characteristic vegetation. They denounced the activity, which turned out to be unauthorised dumping of soil from a plot in Portitxol. The Portitxol landowner also owns the Saladar plot. The dumping has been stopped . THE GRAPEVINE, March 2012

Jose Chulvi MAYOR OF JAVEA

This month I would like to highlight some of the key infrastructure developments which are either taking place or are planned. Some of the works financed by the Alicante Diputación (Regional Government) are the direct result of my lobbying the appropriate departments in my capacity as a deputy in the regional government. Cami de Cabanes. At the junction Ctra de la Nao/ Cami de Cabanes a new roundabout is being constructed and nearby a new Punt Verd for the disposal of household rubbish. When completed this new roundabout will permit transit traffic from Balcon al Mar and other southern urbanisations to leave Jávea without having to travel through the main parts of the town. Crta de Jesus Pobre. Work will begin soon on the resurfacing of 4km of this road financed by Alicante. Saladar Roundabout. This project at the junction of Ctra Cabo de La Nao and Ctra de la Guardia has not been overlooked and I continue to press Alicante for the financing of this important road improvement. Bus Station. This is the first project to be approved within the context of the participatory budget initiative involving the direct imput of our citizens. The project has now been finalised by the Town Hall’s municipal architects. Located on the Ronda Sur where the current provisional car park area is located, there will be a covered area for bus passengers, toilet facilities and a snack bar for refreshments. Work will start on this in the near future. Repair of ring roads. The repair work on the ring roads around the Old Town is almost completed. The company responsible for the original renovation work is replacing cobbles which have lifted and waste-paper bins which have gone rusty. The work falls under the original warranty and will not involve any cost to the municipal coffers. Included in the project is reducing

Page 9

the kerb heights where appropriate, to avoid damage to car tyres and the risk of serious injury to pedestrians who may fall. Enhancing public areas. Where possible measures are being taken to visually enhance public areas around the Old Town. AMJASA. Despite some incorrect comments in the local English media about water tarifs in force since 2003, real progress is being made in modernising and improving AMJASA. The 2012 Public Works Plans have been approved and will comprise five projects totalling 200,000 euros aimed at improving the public water supply system in the municipality. As these are minor works, the tendering process will be restricted to local builders and plumbers, creating jobs for Jávea in these difficult economic times. Following a grant from AGA (Spanish Association of Water Companies) a training programme will be implemented covering corrective maintenance in water supply systems. The course will be attended by nine company workers and three unemployed plumbers from the municipality. To further improve communications with Jávea´s non-Spanish residents, I have set up a Facebook page in English and would like to invite readers to become a ‘Friend’ on my page – search for ‘Javea Mayor Jose Chulvi’ to find the page. You will be able to read news items which I post and information from the Town Hall, and of course contact me with your comments or questions, which I will do my best to answer within a reasonable period.

How are we perceived by those who we have left behind? No I don’t mean after we have passed on I mean back in Great Britain (I hope that using the word’ Great’ hasn’t offended anyone). I often wonder if my former friends in the commuter belt look upon my life in Spain as one of continual compromise where I have to suffer the rigours of a backward society and where the only compensation is an improvement in the climate. Do they swallow the hogwash which is the general fare produced by the terrestrial TV stations. How often have they produced the “Spanish Dream turns to nightmare” exposé? It strikes me that this is the only story that they want to transmit. I admit that since I moved to Spain six years ago I have had to submit myself to hospital treatment on a couple of occasions and have been amazed as pairs of cleaners have wandered round the corridors washing and polishing surfaces and floors. Where did they learn such habits? Not in the NHS general where a blood splattered floor was left unattended for more than a day. I also have the major inconvenience of taking household rubbish to a local depository where it is removed twice every week. Surely, like my former neighbours, it would be so much better if I could keep all this waste in my kitchen and then take it out every week or so, ensuring that it was placed in the correct Wheelie Bin outside my house. If I inadvertently place a newspaper in the wrong place then of course I would accept the financial penalty and fully understand that the Refuse Removal Executive was entirely correct in refusing to remove it. Do our friends ponder on how much better life would be if instead of watching our kids wander around the local beachfront with their friends we could see them gather on street corners and hope that the guy in the hoody is hiding his face because he has eczema. This backward country is where the local teenagers happily demonstrate respect for their parents and even greater respect for their grandparents. It takes very little time for an Ex Pat to appreciate that this is one of the attributes of the local populace that has long been forgotten in our former home territory. But there again who needs Pride these days? Oh shut up! (I mean Sha’up!) In Bay Radio we have a huge Internet audience and our technology allows us to see where they are located. Of course the largest majority is based in the UK and when we hear from them it is not with sympathy for our unfortunate condition but with a degree of wistfulness and a “Wish I was there” attitude. Bay Radio - happy to be setting the record straight. To be continued . . . . tony@bayradio.fm

with John Migan Firstly apologies to our listeners for the last couple of weeks; sometimes you have to hold your hands up when things have not gone to plan! We have moved studios and frequencies and there have been far too many errors, some down to us and some beyond our control but all in all simply not good enough and far, far from the high standards we have set ourselves and our listeners now expect of us. Our new Javea frequency is 99.5FM and by the time you are reading this all of our technical ‘teething’ problems would have been sorted, if not heads will roll I can assure you!! We will come out of this bigger and stronger than ever, with 4 exciting new transmission sites giving us again unrivalled coverage. In some ways this will give us a good kick up the backside, we will learn from our mistakes, dust ourselves down and move forward, onward and upward! We have some great new competitions scheduled for the spring with more chances of winning BIG money. We also have some fantastic events planned starting with helping Kimberley and all the Zumba Queens (and Kings) raise money for the very worthy charity APASA. This year’s Zumbathon takes place on Javea Arenal beach (Achill beach end car park) on Saturday March 31st at 10.30am, as well as some Spectrum FM folk, my CD Javea veteran’s football team will be doing our best to keep up! If you want to join in the fun, get fit and help raise money register now: info@zumbacostablanca.com or call Kimberley on 696 746 091, these events are always great fun for all the family, however fit or unfit you are! Something a little more for the boys (but girls also more than welcome) is our annual Go-kart race, full details of both these events will be announced shortly on air, on our website www.spectrumfm.net and on the local face book page ‘Javea Events 2012.’ I would like to thank everyone that joined us on our Ski trip to Sierra Nevada, I think I can safely say everyone had a fantastic time; the weather was perfect as was the company, a great mixed crowd who all got on together really well. A big thank you also to Beniconnect who supplied the luxury coach and a great driver in ‘Boris’ an ex proffesional skier of who we just couldn’t of asked more. As always many thanks for listening keep this safe and retune to our new Javea frequency of:

99.5FM!

ASK OSCAR

Spanish born Oscar Anton Izquierdo has a degree in European and community law and a master in town planning and taxes. He lives and works in Jávea and speaks Castellano, Valenciano, French and English. Oscar is married to Mónica and is the proud dad of his little son Carlitos, and baby daughter, Vega. Oscar has been a counsillor since 2007 and is presently the deputy mayor and responsible for managing Javea’s economy and international relations.

Dear Óscar I would like to know what Padron registration is, and what it means? Officially all residents in Spain are required by law to register on the padrón, yet many British ex-pats still have not done so. However, in reality, it is simply a way for the town hall to know how many people live in their area, without entering into investigations as to a person’s official residence status or financial affairs. In addition, the information provided at registration is confidential and protected by data protection laws. Once you’ve completed the simple process, you can begin to enjoy all the advantages being on the padrón offers, such as;

Better public services .The central Government allocates money to the different municipalities according to how many people are on the padrón. Therefore, if you are not registered, your town hall is losing money for the provision of health centres, police officers, fire fighters and schools. Also you will have acces to benefits and social care because you must be on the padrón for a certain period of time to take advantage of some income-related benefits and other aspects of social care available through social services at your town hall. You have the opportunity to have a reduction in taxes, because depending on the town hall, registration on the padrón could mean up to 50% off the rubbish Tax, as well as reductions in certain community charges and inheritance tax. Furthermore, those on the padrón can also often enjoy discounted courses, leisure and cultural activities run by the town hall. Also you will have the voting rights in order to register to vote in local or European elections, you must first be registered on the padrón. Dear Óscar, me and my husband came to Jávea ten years ago and we have two daughters. Unfortunately we have some problems and I want to divorce, but I do not know if I must present the divorce in U.K or here. If I must proceed here I do not know how much time it takes and the costs, can

you advice me. I am sorry for your personal situation, you must present your divorce in Spain, in case of agreed divorce, if you and your spouse are Spanish residents at the time of filing for divorce or if you and your spouse are Spanish nationals, in case of agreed divorce, wherever you are located. There are two differences kinds of divorce; Agreed divorce or Contested divorce. The easiest way is the agreed divorce the court proceedings involved to get an agreed divorce are quick and simple. The petition for divorce must be filed by your Spanish lawyer together with the parenting plan, if applicable. If there is not any chance of an agreed divorce you must proceed to the contested divorce in this case the divorce petition is filed by only one of the parties to the marriage without the other’s consent. The court procedure could be long and complex but depending on the circumstances, before starting the divorce proceedings, provisional

measures may be set up in order to settle the issues related to common assets, child custody, spousal support and alimony arrangements. With the divorce there are some effects, the parties to the marriage can remarry legally. The parties will get immediately extinguished their initial rights of inheritance and widow’s pension, as well as other obligations derived from their marriage. The divorced parents still keep their duties and rights with regard to their descendants.

WINE RACK with Tim Ladd Tim spent a working lifetime dependent on alcohol for his income within various parts of Allied Domecq plc, and now as a pensioner for ‘life support’ here in Spain.

pizza. We could then have it once that I had got back home home, to be enjoyed there with a modest red wine. The pizza was almost ready, so I duly paid up and made my way to the car, bearing pizza box ahead of me. I was feeling rather pleased that I had managed to both pre order and would then to be taking no more than the anticipated hour away. The pizza aroma was so good that I failed to notice some pavement paving blocks ahead were uneven. I caught my shoe on one and found myself stumbling headlong, with the pizza still held out in front. I knew I was going to fall. In doing so, my stumble had become more like someone gong too fast in a sack race .As I went down the

pizza flew on, almost into the road and so nearly into the path of a passing police car. They go out to assist me, as did the driver of another passing car. They kindly helped me up and to steady myself. The police lady even retrieved my pizza. Somewhat shaken, I was stirred into driving home with extreme caution. The pizza was somewhat the worse for being tossed away and had landed upside down in its box. It still even tasted fairly well, scraped out as a mashed pizza. Castillo de Liria tinto at around €1.25 was just the right modest wine to help wash down the experience. To more than make up for that trip, soon thereafter we went with some friends to enjoy a gourmet tasting menu at the Rodat Hotel. It was all very relaxed and peaceful, with personal attention for the professional staff. We savoured the various small goumet portions aided by a Sanz Rueda 2011 and then a delicious Albariño fro 2010. Two of us even indulged in just a glass of Rioja. Imaginative food, fine wines and top class service. We have touched before on wines for the occasion. Well this time everything was just so. The price of €55 per head, including wine, water and cammomile tea was also just so. The bruises have now started to fade. We shall be making another trip there as soon as justified! Ah, the Golden Years! A SPECIAL POEM FOR OLDER FOLKS A row of bottles on my shelf Caused me to analyze myself. One yellow pill I have to pop Goes to my heart so it won't stop. A little white one that I take Goes to my hands so they won't shake. The blue ones that I use a lot Tell me I'm happy when I'm not. The purple pill goes to my brain And tells me that I have no pain. The capsules tell me not to wheeze Or cough or choke or even sneeze. The red ones, smallest of them all Go to my blood so I won't fall. The orange ones, very big and bright Prevent my leg cramps in the night. Such an array of brilliant pills Helping to cure all kinds of ills. But what I'd really like to know, Is what tells each one where to go! Mercadona

CHEESE AND COUGETTE FLAN This flan is quite versatile as it can be a starter, a main course, a lunch and also a good choice for a vegetarian meal. *******

Ingredients 225gm shortcrust pastry 400gm courgettes 3 eggs 300ml milk 50gm cheddar cheese A pinch of nutmeg A dash of Tabasco sauce 1tsp salt & a little pepper

Method Line a 20cm/8in flan tin with pastry. Bake it blind for 15 minutes at 200c. Remove the paper and baking beans and return to the oven for a further 5-10 minutes until lightly coloured. Set aside to cool. Meanwhile slice the courgettes thinly, place in a pan, pour boiling water over them to just cover and simmer for 5 minutes. Drain very well and leave to cool. Beat the eggs and add salt, pepper, nutmeg, Tabasco and milk. Arrange the courgettes in the pastry case and scatter over with grated cheese. Pour over the egg mixture and cook in a moderate oven for about 40 minutes. The flan should be set and nicely brown on top.

EATING OUT

John

WITH

Deacon

A British eduvation of the post-war period may have done many things but it certainly did not equip John Deacon for his arrival in Paris in 1964 as an EMI trainee. The splendours of French gastronomy came at him like a bolt of lightning. His subsequent EMI postings to Bruxelles, Beirut, Athens, Amsterdam & Dubai only made the journey the more fascinating. We hope that this experience will prove the basis for a helpful guide to readers exploring Jávea and the surrounding area. Many of his friends agree with him that muzak is one of the scourges of our time which means that the worst offenders do not feature in these listings. If it bothers you, always ask to have it turned down. Visit www.pipedown.info ... and bon appetit ! Club) road. Beautifully appointed Belgian-run restaurant with a stylish air of Mexican decoration. charming new manager (Snra. Montisi) and a new and superb chef (Sr. Francisco Pagan) are working to bring this hotel back into the community (after a long absence !). Their restaurant now offers a truly gastro-nautical treat - and one of their Menu-del-días, at €20.11, is simply marvellous.

Furthermore there was a specially created (pilot) ENGLISH TEA given on March 1st. The hotel accepted help in making tea to the highest standard, as well as cucumber sandwiches. The chef excelled himself especially with delicious scones (with clotted cream and red jam) and carrot & walnutcake. Yes, readers .... It was a triumph and all for €10. As a result the management hope to introduce a monthly ENGLISH TEA in one of the Parador's large recption room to be held on the 1st Thursday of every month. Because the pilot was such an outstanding success it will be necessary to book [96 579 0200] for the next TEA to be given on 5th April (16:30h - 18:00h). We hope this will be come a delightful and regular social event. Welcome to the spring!!! A good friend of mine keeps saying that it is easy to forget about all the problems when the sun and the blue sky come back to cheer up our days in Jávea. I hope that it is the case for you....... Like me, you might feel like working in your garden. If you are thinking about getting rid of your refuse, please read about the new ordin a n c e which will regulate the bonfires:

Doris Courcelles

Burning is prohibited from 1 to 31 August, Sundays and public holidays and any day when the wind exceeds 30 kilometres per hour, the temperatures go over 30 degrees or in the occurrence of thermal inversion, i.e. when the temperatures of the atmosphere are higher than the earth, which prevents a vertical column of smoke and causes the smoke to spread horizontally, with the resulting inconvenience to the neighbours. The Ordinance also regulates the economic sanctions which, regardless of other criminal or administrative liability, the Javea Town Hall may impose on those who violate the new rules, ranging from 60 to 600 Euros when they are minor infractions; from 601 to 1,500 Euros for serious infractions, and of 1501 to 3000 Euros when the infraction is considered very serious. Also, if the activity causes any damages, these are calculated on the basis of the cause of the damage, the cost of the restoration of the damaged, the market value of the damaged property and the illicit benefit obtained. With the new Ordinance, the 1996 burning Plan is repealed. Sorry to have been a bit “heavy” on the subject but I am sure that a lot of you are concerned about the contamination…… RASTRILLO AT THE ARENAL: To finish my column, let me remember you that the“international festival is organizing its next “boot-sale” on the 18thMarch at the Arenal so…….if you want to get rid of some of your old items or want to find THE object of your dreams, don’t hesitate to participate.

HERE ARE THE NEW RULES: The Jávea Town Hall has approved a new Ordinance to regulate agricultural burning in the municipality which prohibits any industrial and private burning that is not directly related to agricultural activity. Professional gardeners are no longer permitted to start fires but private residents will be able to deposit their garden trimmings at the “Punt verds”, at the Ecopark or at Ramblars at no cost, according to the Services Department. Professionals in the municipality may also use this area of transfers upon payment of the corresponding fee. With the new Ordinance which is now at claims and appeals phase, the Executive is responding to the long-standing complaints of residents and neighbourhood associations, such as the Inter Sociedad de Hispanófilos de Balcón al Mar or Montgó urbanizations, who have been requesting this ban for over a decade in order to reduce the risk of fire and avoid odours and fumes in residential areas. It also restricts the burning activities to certain areas of the municipality (Pla, camí Cabanes and les Valls) and limits them to days when there are no weather conditions likely to cause risk of fire. According to the new Ordinance, burning permits will be granted by the Agriculture Service (in the Portal del Clot) only for plots of agricultural production at least 500 meters away from forest land, in authorized burners, with the necessary means to control any fire hazards and from dawn until 11 a.m., when the fire must be completely put out. These permits may be requested if the trimmings are from farming activity and they are burned on the same farmland. Owners of nurseries and garden centres in the official register of producers, traders and importers of plants or plant products of the Conselleria de Agricultura may also apply.

Have a nice Spring and a good Easter period!!! If you need me for anything, send me an e-mail : doris.courcelles@ajxabiacom

Doris Courcelles, councillor for “services, environment and beaches” was born in Belgium and studied at a French university. She speaks Castellano, English, French, Dutch, and German and is still trying to improve her Valenciano. As a consequence, she knows many residents and societies of Spanish and other nationalities here in Jávea. She moved to Spain in 1978. She has a son aged 29 and can empathise with parents in a foreign country.

Thieves aren't stupid... take heed !

have sent you a text.

GPS / SatNav A couple of weeks ago a friend told me that someone she knew had their car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was parked on the green which was adjacent to the football stadium and specially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been prominently mounted on the dashboard. When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen.

As of now, I no longer have 'home' listed on my cell phone (nor on my SatNav)

The thieves had used the GPS to direct them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the football game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean out the house. It would appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents. Something to consider if you have a GPS - don't put your home address in it.. Put a nearby address (like a store or gas station) so you can still find your way home if you need to, but no one else would know where you live if your GPS were stolen. MOBILE PHONES I never thought of this....... This lady has now changed her habit of how she lists her names on her mobile phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag contained her cell phone, credit card, wallet... etc.... Twenty minutes later when she called her husband, from a pay phone telling him what had happened, he says, 'I received your text asking about our Pin number and I've replied a little while ago.' When they rushed down to the bank, the staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The thief had used the stolen cell phone to text 'hubby' in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from their bank account. Moral of the lesson: Do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list. Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad, Mom, etc.... And very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked through texts, CONFIRM by calling back. Also, when you're being texted by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don't reach them be very careful about going places to meet 'family and friends' who

Priest on his deathbed The first step to wisdom is silence, the second is listening. Proverbs 1:5 An old priest lay dying. He sent a message for an Inland Revenue supervisor and his lawyer to come to the hospital. When they arrived, they were ushered up to his room. As they entered the room, the priest held out his hands and motioned for them to sit on each side of the bed. The priest grasped their hands, sighed contentedly, smiled and stared at the ceiling.. For a time, no one said anything. Both the Inland Revenue supervisor and the lawyer were touched and flattered that the old man would ask them to be with him during his final moments. They were also puzzled because the priest had never given any indication that he particularly liked either one of them. Finally, the lawyer asked, "Father, why did you ask the two to come here?". The old priest mustered all his strength, and then said weakly, "Jesus died between two thieves, and that’s how I’d like to go".

A busy time for the Javea U3A The New Year has got off to a flying start for the Javea U3A and the end of February and the beginning of March has been a very busy week for the members. On Tuesday, 28th, forty four enthusiastic competitors took part in the annual Car Treasure Hunt devised by the Groups Co-Ordinator John Bellinger-Smith

Saville, the Treasurer of Cancer Care Javea, which is the nominated Javea U3A charity for 2012. This was followed by a very informative talk from Lindsay Johnson on the subject of the advances in the treatment of breast cancer. On Wednesday 7th March twenty nine members of the Javea U3A Curry Club met at the Rani Palace in Javea. The club, run by Tom and Jean Miller, normally meets once a month at different member’s house where the hosts prepare the main meal and the guests bring accompanying dishes. With nearly sixty people in the club, the capacity for curry suppers at member’s houses has to be limited and this was the first club outing to a curry restaurant to allow more of the members to enjoy a meal together. The evening was a great success and hopefully will be the first of many thought the year.

From left to right, Ron and Pru Hughes and Duncan and Julie Robson. whilst an almost equal number of the Javea U3A members enjoyed a day’s coach trip to Xativa and the Monastry at Valldigna. Wednesday 29th February was the monthly meeting where the members again filled the large meeting room The weeks ahead are filled with more activities and at the Javea Parador hotel to listen to a talk by Terry plans are well advanced for a tea dance at the Javea social centre on 28th March and the Annual Javea U3A ball which will be held at the El Canor function rooms on the 18th May. This month will see the Javea U3A AGM held at the Parador on Wednesday 28th March, where the members will have the opportunity to vote in a new committee, which, this year, will include the election of a new President and Vice President.

The right thing, at the right time Jack woke up with a killer hangover after attending his firm's Party. He didn't even remember how he got home. It's 8.30. What day is it? Thursday. His wife must have gone to work. As he struggled into consciousness through the fog of a pounding headache, his stomach plummeted as he wondered what the hell he did last night. He forced himself to open his eyes, and the first thing he saw was a couple of aspirins next to a glass of water on the side table. And, next to them, a little vase of sweet peas, freshly picked from the garden. He sat up. The bedroom was clean and tidy, - there was no trail of drunkenly abandoned clothes, fresh air was coming in through the window and all was serene. He stumbled to the bathroom, also pristine, and, squinting gingerly into the mirror, saw that he had a black eye. This was not a good sign, but no memories were returning.

written in red, with little hearts on it and a kiss from his wife.

With a large majority and extensive debate, The Javea Town Hall agreed at a full council session to suspend for one year the municipal fees applied to the opening of new businesses. The proposal by Councillor of Finance, Oscar Antón, had the support of the PSPV, Xàbia Democrática, Ciudadanos por Jávea, and the Grupo NoAdscrito. The Bloc Centristes abstained, saying the tax rebate should apply only to small and medium-sized companies and exclude large companies coming in from outside. The objective of the Executive is give this tax rebate to anyone wanting to open a new business in Javea, thereby attracting investment and stimulating economic activity, self-employment and job creation opportunities. During the next 12 months, anyone who chooses to open a business in Javea will be able to save approximately 1,000 Euros (depending on the size of the premises). In addition to new businesses, the rebates will also be applied to reforms and enlargements, changes in businesses, transfer or reopenings. Oscar Anton explained that the budgets for 2012 had appropriated 62,000 Euros revenue for these rates, which will be compensated with the surplus that the Town Hall coffers closed 2011. The Councillor thanked the other parties for their sup-

Love, Jillian. x " He stumbled to the kitchen and sure enough, there was hot breakfast, steaming hot coffee and the newspaper. His teenage son was sitting at the table, eating. Jack, bracing himself, asked his son what happened the previous night. " Well, you came home after 3 A.M., drunk and out of your mind. You fell over the coffee table and broke it, and then you puked in the hallway, and got that black eye when you ran into the door. " Confused, he asked his son, "So, why is everything in such perfect order, aspirins by the bed, a nice note from Mum and breakfast waiting for me?" His son replied, 'Oh THAT!... Mum dragged you to the bedroom, and when she tried to take your trousers off, you screamed, 'Leave me alone you slapper, I'm married!!' Craft Corner Arts and crafts are enjoying a huge resurgence of interest. There is so much pleasure to be had in crafting something handmade and sharing it with your friends and family. Crafting is a hobby that can be enjoyed by all ages and at Fiesta Crafts we stock a wide variety of hobby crafts. One of the most popular paper crafts is card making. Receiving a card tells someone that you are thinking about them on their special day. Whether you are creating and sending a card for a birthday, Easter, the arrival of a new baby, or just to say thank you, a handmade card shows someone that they are special to you. Handmade cards can be tailored to the personality and likes of the recipient.

Emaus Children need our help all through the year not just at Christmastime & therefore we are staging a SPRING GIFT FAIR at Salones Carrasco Javea on Sunday 25th March to help support these youngsters who have been placed in the care of Emaus. The Event will run from 11.00 to 16.00 & there will be 45 stalls bulging with Gifts for you, your friends & your relatives. Salones Carrasco will run a non-stop bar & coffee bar with special & inexpensive food options.

Trends in card making change regularly and avid crafters like to be kept informed of these. The trend setting crafter in 2012 will be drawn to pleasing colours like lilac, blue, white and navy blue. Tone on tone card layouts will suit these colours beautifully. The more adventurous crafter will be colour blocking panels on their cards in vibrant patterns such as peacock, zebra and damask, interspersed with panels of white.

As is usual we collect on the day anything you may have "spare" for children from 0 - 16 years. We take clothing of all types, toys for all ages, & of course donations too! We charge 1e per person entry & ALL this goes directly to the Friends of the Children of Emaus so that it can be correctly & fairly allocated to the 140 children in their care.

One of the most popular techniques to use on your handmade greeting cards during 2012 will be stamping, especially large floral stamps that can then be heat embossed and cut out to make a 3D topper. 3D crafts and decoupage will feature heavily in card designs throughout the whole of 2012. Decoupage involves creating 3D pictures from multiple copies of one image. Individual elements are cut or pressed out of die cut sheets and layered with glue or adhesive foam pads to build up the picture.

Please come along to support the Children & find yourself some wonderful gifts along the way! Further information on The Friends of the children of Emaus from Carole Saunders calcalpe@gmail.com & on the Fairs lesleyclarkjavea@gmail.com

The art of paper Quilling to make floral designs will also make a comeback this year. Paper Quilling involves rolling thin strips of paper and then sculpting and glueing them together to make ornate coils. Popular shapes made from these paper coils include flowers, leaves, butterflies and scrolls. With England hosting the Olympics in 2012 and the Queen also celebrating her Diamond Jubilee in June, crafting during the spring and early summer will take on a British feel. This is the time to take the most popular colours for the year, blue and white, and add a splash of red. Vintage themed and nostalgic cards will be popular. Adding hand crafted bunting and vintage floral paper to your cards will keep you in line with the most popular trends. For all your craft supplies, advice and help please call in at Fiesta Crafts, Local 3, Ctra Cabo La Nao Pla 138, Javea. Telephone 966461788, info@fiestacrafts.eu, www.fiestacrafts.eu

The shop is situated in Javea Port on Av. del Furs. It is part of the first building on the left after the Fountain Roundabout. 2011 has been another good year for us dispite the credit crisis and we will be making our annual donations to charitable causes in the near future. We are able to do this because of our supporters and helpers, we need your donations and / or your items to sell on a regular basis. We thank you for all your efforts. During 2011 we have been the proud receivers of two commemorative plaques, one being from Javea Town Hall the other from La Pedrera Hospital Denia in appreciation of our donations to charities. However, we still require new helpers, so if you can spare one morning per week, please call into the shop and ask for details. The shop is open 10.00 - 13.30 Monday to Saturday. The shop will be closed on Easter Monday 9th April.

Busy Jávea Sitting in the sunshine, thinking about this month’s Grapevine, I was struck with how quickly Jávea changes its mood with the weather. Wandering about the Old Town, post-roadwork – and the Port, preroadwork, the streets looked busy and the shops seemed full. The Spring sunshine has brought out the smiles as well as the blossom, but there are still empty premises around and while people are browsing, they are not all buying. On a positive note, a few places are empty, simply because they have moved - ‘The Great Indian’, for example, is no longer on the Jesus Pobre Road, it has a new home along the Arenal Coast Road near the access to Jávea Park Car Park. There are also new businesses, the Arenal has several interesting looking new cafés and bars and the Port has also had a few changes in occupation over the winter. Those of us who have been here throughout the downturn, however, are still feeling the strain. Although it has been a while since the building of the Municipal car parks shut the town down, the effects of all those many months of closure are still affecting us all. So, it is great news that the Valencia Department of Infrastructure has finally agreed to delay the planned refurbishment of the Arenal until the end of the Summer Season (i.e. until October). All credit to our Coalition Town Hall to have turned so much round in such a short time and great news that businesses are being helped to bring life back into the Town.

Administradores has opened a Jávea Branch on Cabo la Nao Road in the Arenal... They are accountants, based also in Denia and the UK and are specialists in Urbanisation Community management. Steve Mitchell from Fontana Design has expanded their portfolio to include detailed website analysis reports on any website, not just the ones they designed – so not only can you check out your own site – you can get detailed competitor analysis to see how well your competition promotes their business online! U P Publications latest book, ‘Please… Call me Derek’ by Mac Black, launched in the UK on the 8th and they are releasing the rest of Jávea author Mai Griffin’s Grey Series in paperback around Easter (at the moment books Two and Three ‘A Poisonous Shade of Grey’ and ‘Grey Masque of Death’ are only in Hardback) all 4 of Mai’s books are available in their current format from Humpty Dumpty. I have certainly noticed a pick-up in business, so much so that I have had no time to take my camera out to add new photos to my portfolio on www.javeaphotos.com though I am pleased to say that everyone else has been much more efficient, so there are now over 4,400 photos online. More than 440 cover the Costa Blanca, Spanish lifestyle, Fiestas, Jávea and other Marina Alta Towns. The photo on the left is an escapee from the site and many of our photographers are local (professional and amateur enthusiasts). The site is free to join, by the way, and we need more photos of Jávea, so please help to build it up.

Gaile Griffin Peers - www.mabusinessclub.com Marina Alta Business Our business networking meetings Club Branches, Jávea & Denia, offer in Jávea (Peri Pera Café in the Port up to three business networking and Digby’s Bar in The Arenal, meetings a month. Either go to Suma office in Denia to request "Fraccionamiento de pago de multa" with a copy of your NIE and proof of your bank details, or request this using ordinary or certified post and sending copies of the above documents and the fine to Suma. If you post your request you must download the Modelo de Fraccionamiento/Aplazamiento from www.suma.es and fill and send. There are 2 different pages on web – one is form and one is instructions. If you wish to dispute a parking fine, you can come to the OAC offices (Avda Amanecer 2 above Clot parking) and fill in "Escrito de Alegaciones por Multa de Trafico" form. NIE, address and name required. Say why you are disputing the fine and what you are requesting. You will need to attach a copy of the fine document given to you and have the form entered into system at this office. You may ask for a copy of the form. Be aware that if this dipute is denied, you will probably pay the full amount of the fine, not the 50% reduction allowed for quick payment. Elizabeth Collins March 2012

Your

with Dr Christoph Semler

Dr. Christoph Semler qualified as a doctor at the University of Frankfurt and then specialised in General Practice in the UK. He is a Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners, holds a Diploma from the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, a Diploma in Child Health Surveillance. He opened his private practice in JĂĄvea in 2001. Dr Semler is fluent in English, Spanish and French and has a working knowledge of Dutch. Dear doctor, I am 63 years of age, a retired police officer from the UK. I have all my life suffered from gout but was usually ok taking medicine. Since moving to Spain my wife has taken up the mediterranean diet or way of cooking with lots of salads and olive oil. I decided for myself that red wine also formes part of the Mediterranean way and enjoy a glass or two with dinner. I am quite fit for my age, not overweight and exercise regularly. But lately I have been getting joint pains more frequently just as when the gout was bad. My wife blames the wine for it. Is that true? I know my doctor in the UK said I had to avoid beer and red meat, but wine? Please tell me wine is not making it worse. Dear Malcom, you put me in a difficult situation here: how to break this piece of news kindly? The truth is that alcohol in any form does indeed make

gout attacks more likely. Your wife is right in that matter. Alcohol does not cause gout, far from it. The cause is almost always some inborn defect of the metabolism, that is the way our body works. In the case of gout, the kidneys are not able to excrete a certain substance called uric acid. If not excreted it accumulates in our body and can form crystals. These crystals tend to appear in the joints and the soft tissue surrounding them. When there are enough crystals they cause an acute inflammation which is what we perceive as pain. Most mammals are able to break uric acid down further into harmless easily excreted substances but unfortunately not human beings. For some reason we have lost this ability. So if we are born with kidneys that do not excrete uric acid effectively into the urine then it builds up in the blood stream. Once its concentration crosses a

certain threshold crystals form, inflammation begins and we suffer. Alcohol uses the same mechanism of excretion in the kidney as does uric acid. So if a gout sufferer drinks too much alcohol the mechanism in the kidney to excrete the uric acid gets overloaded, collapses, does not get rid of uric acid any longer and, hello, on comes the gout attack. It does not matter where the alcohol comes from, beer or wine or spirits. Your doctor warned you of beer in particular because beer also contains a group of substances called purines which are believed to make gout worse. Wine containes much less purines. Coca cola like fizzy drinks also are high in those purines and should be avoided. With the Mediterranean diet also come fish, grilled or streamed. Fish, like meat and offal contains these purines as well and you should not eat too much of it. Salads in all their variety and splendour however are good and troublefree foodstuff. As is olive oil, of course. Did you not say you were on some medication for your gout? You should probably still be taking it, as it is very difficult to eat so uric acid conscious as to avoid all problems with gout. The tablets are very effective and free from side-effects. If you get attacks of gout despite taking the tablets then you should see your

doctor and have your blood checked. And you joints looked at. Who says your joint troubles are gout related? It could be something completely different causing your joint pains. Maybe you are exercising too much. With exercise one can certainly desire too much of a good thing. Simple overuse can make you joints ache. So, in practical terms, let´s do this: take your gout medication. Probably just taking it regularly and to the maximum dose will take care of all your gout trouble. If not, have your blood and your joints examined by your doctor. If all you drink are one or two glasses of red wine per day you should not be getting gout attacks unless you consume other gouttriggering things like meat, offal, also peanuts. There might well be scope for you to improve your diet for solid food.

SATELLITE KNOW HOW

Richard Pollock Consultant Electronic Engineer Satellite Break Through !!! Having received information over the last month or so, I was all set for the 24th of February 2012 !!! At 9-00 A.M. this morning I switched on my old Pace 2600 Satellite Receiver and connected it to my 1 Metre Satellite Dish ( Part of my Satellite Dish Farm!), I was rewarded by receiving both BBC 1 and BBC2 with excellent quality Sound and Vision. The same evening after 7 P.M BBC3 and 4 were also received. Of course those who have H.D. Satellite Receivers will have the benefits of superb quality pictures and if a surround sound system is available then its possible to re-create Cinema conditions, electronics never stops still. I should also mention that ITV1 Channel 4 Channel 5, 5USA, 5USA+1, Channel 5+1 and ITV1+1 and many others along of course with a good selection of U.K. Radio Stations are also available on the same 1 Metre Satellite Dish !!! Tests were also carried out on an 80 cm Satellite Dish with similar results, however while in general terms here in Eastern Spain we enjoy excellent weather on occasion we do have several days of very heavy rain, without doubt this will effect reception performance. My advice would always be if you are considering a new installation go for the largest Satellite Dish within reason you can afford always assuming that if in an apartment its allowed, in that way you are more likely to receive reception during these rainy spells. For people who already have 2.4 metre Satellite Dishes, performance should be excellent and

of course for those who have been missing some of the Sky Channels that are transmitted on the Ku Band Northern Beam then it should be possible to concentrate on improving this situation as we no longer have the problem of losing the BBC programs. Background Information As suspected BBC1,2,H.D. etc Stations have been moved from Astra 2D to Astra 1N, Astra have had to complete this operation as 2D is getting too near its ‘Sell Buy’ date ! Astra 1N is planned to move to 19.2 degrees as soon as the new Astra ’ E’ Series Satellites are launched, this should take place within the next eighteen months to two years, why are they now using 1N, simple, the intended replacement was damaged at launch and was written off, putting the plan back by some two years. We will now have to hope that when the Astra ‘E ’series are finally launched ( hope it a successful launch this time ) will we still enjoy the footprint used by Astra 1N or will BBC again carry on reducing the signal into Europe ? If so lets us hope that the Treaty of Rome has now acquired some teeth and allow Brits living in Europe the same privilege's as our European Cousins who have moved to the U.K. and enjoy viewing of their National Stations! With people now being able to received BBC1, BBC2, ITV 1, Four and Five etc using a one Metre Satellite Dish installed with a Standard Satellite Receiver,

I would expect a cost of around 299 Euros, for a full 1 metre Installation, if you decide on a 1.2 metre Installation expect to pay around 349Euros both with a quality LNB. I would expect this would appeal to some of the OAP‘s and others in our community who are suffering the financial ‘Crisis’ at the moment and are trying to reduce their outgoings. New SKY EPG on its way Sky are rumoured to be currently testing a new EPG update. Some of the new features include a transparent tv guide and banner, and the banner it self will be more user friendly including direct access to Anytime content without going into the tv guide. Sky to Launch New Internet Service Sky, the first UK broadcaster to offer content that could be downloaded over the internet, is now set to launch a new internet-based TV in the first half of this year. In what is likely to be an attempt to combat Netflix and Lovefilm, Sky's new service will not require a minimum contract. Instead, customers can rent single movies on a pay-as-you-go basis. They can also avail of a monthly subscription for unlimited access to Sky movies, and later on have access to sports and other entertainment as well. Available on laptops, tablets, mobile phones, connected TVs, and game consoles, it's a great additional option for those who don't have pay TV. This offer has caused analysts to fear cannibalising of Sky's services, to which Sky's chief executive, Jeremy Darroch, said: "We're very tuned to the risks of cannibalisation and there are many ways we can differentiate the service. Customers really like the satellite service, they get good value from it and want to get more from it, so this isn't being started with any concerns about satellite." Alongside this new offer, Sky's original internet offer, SkyGo will now have SkyArts1, SkyLiving, SkyOne, SkySports F1, and Sky Atlantic. A new Android

app for SkyGo is also going to be brought to Samsung and HTC smartphones. Sky also plans on unveiling a new public Wifi service powered by The Cloud, as well as adding 1million homes to their broadband network by 2013. Most of these homes will be served by a new fibre service of 40 Mbps. Satellite Broadband Quite often I receive calls regarding ADSL using telephone connections, this varies considerably in this area, those fortunate enough to have available Fibre Optics experience great improvements in line speed and this makes for much speedier Downloads, and with the correct techniques it is possible to view U.K. T.V. programmes etc. For those with the standard copper cable service will have to wait a very long time before the lines are updated as the Installation of Fibre Optic lines is very expensive and I suspect with the financial climate at the moment Telefonica have but this on the back burner ! Another approach is to consider is having a direct line using the latest Satellite Dish System using a small 75 cm Dish and associated Router Unit, speeds from 6, 8 and 10 Mb are available. The component quality is excellent, Installation time is usually 2 to 3 hours and the monthly charges are very competitive. The work is carried out using all the latest technology and the results are guaranteed. For further information give me a call.

For those requiring further information, please check out my Web Site. I will always try and answer your problems via e-mail, however with some of the more complex problems, without conducting a 'Field Test' which involves a home visit and of course conducting a series of test it is impossible to reach a conclusion. JPG Computer talk

Grapevine@jpg-assistencia.com telephone: 644 46 41 49

Hi Everyone! Enough for now talking about Microsoft’s next Operating System. When it’s finally released we will talk about it a little more, once the final product is out and up and running. On this edition’s post we are going to talk about a commonly suffered by virtually all computer users nuisance: spam email; either you already know what it is or you do not use email. If you don’t use email, which is very uncommon, spam is a good reason not starting using it; in fact, it is probably also the only reason not to start!! Let’s try then to explain what spam is, why it appeared and still exists and of course, what can we do to reduce the impact on our email accounts, as eventually our mail provider can even suspend our account if it’s constantly bombed with this type of emails. There isn’t an exact definition of "spam", as if it existed, it would probably not be agreed by everybody. This is because and why any definition of junk email includes a subjective part, but basically we could say that spam emails are emails that we didn’t ask for that were sent in bulk (this is to many recipients) from senders that you don’t know. Please note that with this I’m not including desired mail as newsletters you did sign up for, emails from college friends and messages from people trying to contact you personally. These of course, are not considered spam. Still, a newsletter somebody

signed you up for to annoy you is not spam but a different kind of email abuse. Sounds strange? Believe me, this happens too!!!! Also an email sent to you in bulk by an unknown sender that you do in fact welcome and find useful may not be spam either. What this means is that every email you asked for is not spam but not every email you did not ask for is spam. The reason spam is successful is none other than it really works. People do buy products advertised in this junk email, subscribe to shopping or travelling clubs, etc. and also works because it is cheap to send. Spammers can send their junk inexpensively using resources extending from spam friendly servers to ordinary people's computers turned into spam machines, voluntary or involuntarily (with a virus, per example). At the same time, even the risk of getting caught is substantial and involves high costs (depending on the country of origin and it’s laws) — which apparently are not enough to offset the profitability of sending spam. Spam is bad because the cost is borne by the recipient. Even being ‘free’ to send and to receive, it costs time, money and resources, making email a significantly less attractive method than what it is designed for. Fortunately, spam has not ruined it completely, though, and hopefully neither will it. Thanks to current spam controlling filters that are applied at times directly on

Page 31

our email server, at times by specifically designed software this annoying type of messages are continuously being controlled and looked into. There are shared by main servers lists of other spam friendly servers as well as of spam senders, which are not welcome when they try to acquire a domain on these servers actively implicated in, if not erasing, at least helping controlling the continuous spreading of this plague. Here are some tips that we can follow to help their task: • Do not threaten violence to spammers fighting violence with violence isn’t the solution. • Don't buy from spammers; don’t forget they are in this for the money. • Assume most mail from unknown senders is spam and use your email address book to identify and filter spam. • Don't delete spam automatically, as spam filters are not perfect. At times they may produce false positives and delete legitimate mail. • Choose internet service providers by their spam policy. • Don't believe spammers when they use sentences like "You requested". • Don't use the "this is Spam" option to unsubscribe from the sender’s lists as an automatic action. It’s an easy and effective way to get rid of it, but you should make sure you use it only for spam email messages. Otherwise, bad karma may not be the only unpleasant conse-

quence. All for today! I sincerely hope this post has helped to acknowledge the dimension of spam emails and what we can do as users to help erasing it as much as it’s in our hands. BENO, male, Shelter since 13.04.2011 Labrador Mix, DOB 12.09.2010 – 60 cm This lovely, yet cautious dog was brought in by his owner. She not could keep him anymore because Beno did not like her children. We understand that a shy dog as he is will not like the unexpected moves and the playfulness of little children. Beno likes people but he needs to get acquainted with them first. If you would like to give him “the gentle treatment” he requires you will be rewarded by having a very loving and faithful dog. ELVIRA, female, Shelter since 14.06.2011 Bracke Mix, DOB 03.10.2009 – 56 cm One morning she was there tied to our gate, with a bowl of water beside her. He owners left her and she was so afraid of us and all the dogs that kept barking. Slowly but steadily she is accepting her new situation, and her trust in people is growing. In due course she will start to love everybody again but a good new home would make things much easier for her. TARZAN and TERZO, males, Shelter since 11.02.2012 Mastin Mix, DOB 07.02.2012 – Puppies Tarzan and Terzo had been “found” somewhere in the campo. Their “finders” threatened to throw them in the garbage if we would not take them. We took them in, even if we did not have any space for them. It was impossible to put them into a group of other dogs, as they were so young and not vaccinated. Now both

PANCAKE, female, Shelter since 24.01.2012 Podenco, DOB 15.08.2011 – Puppy She was tied to the gate and she was so much in shock when we approached her that the rope which was bound around her neck was getting more and more tight. We crawled towards her, to keep her calm and finally could take the string off her neck. No damage was done and within an hour she was playing with the other puppies in the pound. Now she is completely relaxed and happy, healthy and vaccinated and can be adopted. If you are interested in this sweet podenco puppy, just come to the pound. She will be so happy to see you! EVENTS. Cats are also very independent and like their space to sleep in tranquillity. Some cats are extremely social and like visiting people; this is exactly what my cat does, but it can have serious consequences. Some people may think your cat is lost or abandoned.

Animal Care with Fleur Conway Fleur, has worked as a vetinarary assistant for 20 years. Her work included surgery, anaesthesia, laboratory, emergencies, intensive care, consultations and X-ray. She is also a trained Dog groomer and studied canine/feline psychology, equine psychology, and currently studying Equine Therapeutic Massage and aromatherapy. Her alternative qualifications include, Bach Flower, Holistic therapies, Crystal Healing, Chakras, colour therapy, Kinesiology and mind control She currently lives with four dogs, five cats, one parrot, one hamster, two guinea pigs, five tortoises, one Iguana, chickens/cockerels, one goose, one sheep, two horses, two Vietnamese pigs and around 28 cockatiels.

CATS

Let’s talk about cats this month. I am sure that so many readers have cats of their own and also feed and look after strays too!! Here are some interesting facts about cats; Cats are members of the Felidea family. A litter of kittens is called a kindle, and a group of cats is called a clowder. A cat's IQ is only surpassed by that of monkeys and chimps in the world of animals. Cats are the only animals that purr. They can purr at around 26 cycles per second, which is the same frequency as an idling diesel engine. Purring does not always indicate that a cat is happy and healthy, some cats will purr loudly when they are terrified or in pain. Your cat will shake or shiver when it is in extreme pain. A cat that shakes may be a symptom of a medical condition. Shaking should not be ignored. Have your cat checked by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Neutering your male cat will, in almost all instances, stop territorial marking (spraying), fighting with other cats, as well as enhance and extend your cat's quality of life. Cat bites are more likely to become infected than dog bites. If you are bitten, and have any signs of infection, such as fever, chills, redness, swelling, warmth, increased tenderness, oozing seek medical attention. A cat's nose pad is as unique as a human fingerprint. No two nose prints are identical. Petting or stroking a cat has actually been proven to help in lowering one's blood pressure. One way a cat shows s/he trusts you is by rolling over on his/her back. A cat's hearing is much stronger and more sensitive than a dog's or a human's. Our hearing stops at 20 khz; a cat's at 65 khz. Cats have 32 muscles in each ear and can turn their ear very quickly to catch noise. Much faster than a very alert watchdog. A cat's sense of smell is about 14 times stronger than ours. Cats have five toes on their front paws and four on their back paws. If a cat is polydactyl, s/he has extra toes. Cats have over 100 vocals sounds, while dogs have only 10. Cats drink liquid from the underside of their tongue, not from the top. Cats get an average of 16 hours of sleep per day. Cats are wonderful creatures they give us so much company and love. They have a healing effect on us. Have you noticed that when you are ill or sad, your cat will immediately come and sit on your lap, or nearby you?

This is my beautiful cat Ronnie (photo) he loves visiting neighbours and eating all their cat food!!! I know this because he went missing before Christmas and thankfully a neighbour who had taken him in saw one of the posters I put up around the area, rang me up to tell me he was with her. I immediately went to get him, and found him curled up on her chair looking very cosy and comfortable. This is what cats want... nice food, warmth, to receive love, attention and tranquillity. What I learned from this nice Lady who took Ronnie in, is that he had been visiting quite a few neighbours for over a year, and many of them believed he was abandoned and/ or lost. There was one neighbour who even contemplated taking him back to his country, and he doesn’t even like cats!! I have to admit I was horrified, although I could understand why he would have taken him, as Ronnie is adorable, cuddly, affectionate as well as beautiful. No, Ronnie does not wear a collar. I personally don’t like putting collars on cats. They can get caught up when out and about hunting and I have seen quite a few cases in the veterinary clinic where cats have been in a right mess all tangled up in their collars. So how can you tell whether a cat has been lost or abandoned? One must evaluate the physical and mental /emotional state of the cat. Is he well kept, happy, affectionate? Does the cat come and go? Before taking any cat in, a visit to the Vet is a must. Does the cat have a microchip? How many people keep cats without checking whether the cat has a microchip? I would really like people to be aware of this. Ronnie has gone missing again, and this time for over a month. The neighbours haven’t seen him. Has he gone elsewhere? Has someone picked him up on his walk abouts? Has something happened to him? Despite telling the local vets, putting posters up (which people keep taking down, don’t know for what reason), asking the neighbours, there is no sign of Ronnie. RONNIE HAS A MICROCHIP. The whole object of putting a microchip in an animal is to help us find them if/when lost. When speaking to one vet about Ronnie she told me of various cases where cats had been taken in to the clinic by clients for vaccinations, or because they were going to travel, only to find out the cat already had a microchip...AND the cat had a previous owner. The worst bit is Fleur (Flor) Conway: that the clients refused to get inHolistic Therapist Animals touch with the previous owner and Humans because basically they did not want Bach Flower Registered to part with the cat. This is dreadful... what about those poor owners Practitioner col. 3557 still looking for their cat, still emo- Young Living Therapeutic tionally linked and missing their cat, grade Essential Oils memhoping to find it???? TWO DIFFERENT DOCTORS Two patients limp into two different medical clinics with the same complaint?. Both have trouble walking and appear to require a hip replacement. The FIRST patient is examined within the hour, is xrayed the same day and has a time booked for surgery the following week. The SECOND sees his family doctor after waiting 3 weeks for an appointment, then waits 8 weeks to see a specialist, then gets an x-ray, which isn't reviewed for another week and finally has his surgery scheduled for 6 months from then. Why the different treatment for the two patients? The FIRST is a Golden Retriever. The SECOND is a Senior Citizen. Next time take me to a vet ! friends . . . . a veterinarian

SPANISH EXPLAINED

by Teacher Writer Cathy Perez Pinto CATHY: Hola. Buenos días a todo el mundo. (Hi. Good morning everybody.) ¿Quién quiere hacerme una pregunta hoy? (Who wants to ask me a question today?) JUNE: Yo. (I do.) Por curiosidad; ¿Cuál es tu bebida favorita? (Just out of curiosity; which is your favourite drink?) CATHY: No lo vas a creer, pero es el agua sin gas, pero tiene que ser muy fría. (You are not going to believe this but it is still water, but it has to be very cold.) RACHEL: Mucha gente habla hoy de las aguas minerales como quien, hasta no hace demasiado tiempo, hablaba de los vinos o el coñac. (Nowadays, many people talk about mineral waters rather like those who, up until very recently, used to talk about wines or brandies.) Las aguas minerales ocupan hoy un lugar de honor en las cartas de muchos restaurantes del mundo. (In many restaurants in the world mineral waters occupy a place of honour on the menu.) Pero, ¿Qué sabemos realmente de las distintas marcas y los distintos tipos de aguas minerales que hoy podemos encontrar en los supermercados, restaurantes, hoteles y cafeterías? (However, what do we really know about the different makes and different types of mineral waters that we can find nowadays in supermarkets, restaurants, hotels and cafés). CATHY: Tienes toda la razón del mundo. (You are absolutely right.)

(Caring for one´s health, the body cult, (water has no calories) concern about a healthy diet, a passion for whatever is natural and the bad state of water in the big cities; all these considerations have contributed to the present situation.) El consumo de aguas minerales naturales ha experimentado un incremento espectacular en los últimos años. (The consumption of natural mineral waters has undergone a spectacular increase in the last few years.) Por ejemplo, solo en España existen más de 100 marcas de agua mineral envasada. (For example, in Spain alone there are over 100 different makes of bottled mineral water.) El marketing ha sido determinante para la comercialización del agua mineral. (Marketing has been decisive in the commercialisation of mineral water.) VINCENT: ¿Cuál es el agua mineral que compras tú? (Which mineral water do you buy?) CATHY: Nosotros siempre compramos la marca Solán de Cabras que viene de Castilla La Mancha. (We always buy the brand Solán de Cabras which comes from Castilla La Mancha.) Yo bebo muchísima agua, así que es importante que sea una marca que me guste aunque sea un poco mas cara que otras marcas. (I drink a great deal of water, so it is important that it should be a brand which I like, even though it might be a little more expensive than other brands.) Es agua de manantial de mineralización débil. (It is spring water with a minimum amount of minerals.) Está

comprobado que para el aparato digestivo el agua de Solán de Cabras actúa como neutralizante de la digestión y favorecedora de la absorción intestinal. ( It has been proved that, as far as the digestive system is concerned, Solán de Cabras water acts as a neutraliser on the digestion and favours intestinal absorption.) El característico color azul de su botella protege el agua de la luz y mantiene inalterables sus extraordinarias cualidades mineromedicinales. ( The characteristic blue colour of its bottle protects the water from the light and maintains its extraordinary mineral and medicinal qualities unchanged.) GAYLE: Nosotros bebemos el agua Font Vella. ¿Qué me puedes decir de ella? (We drink Font Vella water. What can you tell me about it?) CATHY: Es una de las aguas embotelladas más populares de nuestro país y una de las de mayor consumo entre los españoles. (It is one of the most popular bottled waters in our country and one of the ones most widely consumed among the Spanish.) Es agua de manantial de mineralización débil y procede de Sacalm en Girona, Cataluña, donde también es envasada. (It is spring water only lightly mineralised and comes from Sacalm in Girona in Catalunya, where it is also bottled.) Entre otras aguas minerales españolas muy populares está el Vichy Catalán. (Among other very popular Spanish mineral waters is Vichy Catalan.) Tiene su origen a gran profundidad, desde donde brota espontáneamente y lentamente con su propio gas carbónico hasta emerger a 60 grados. ( It originates very deep down from where it gushes forth spontaneously yet slowly with its own carbonised gas until it emerges at 60 degrees.) Durante este trayecto se enriquece con los minerales que le caracterizan. (During its journey it is enriched by the minerals which characterise it.) Muy

bicarbonatada y de alta mineralización, ayuda a la disolución de los cristales de ácido úrico, evitando la formación de cálculos. (Highly bicarbonated and with a high level of minerals, it helps to dissolve uric acid crystals, thus avoiding the formation of gall stones.) Asimismo, su composición mineral estimula las secreciones gástricas y genera un efecto antiácido. ( Similarly, its mineral composition stimulates gastric secretion and generates an antacid effect.) JOE: Cuando estábamos en Galicia hace unos meses solíamos beber una agua muy buena con el nombre de Cabreiroá. ( When we were in Galicia a few months ago we used to drink a very good water by the name of Cabreiroá.) CATHY: Sí; es agua de manantial de mineralización débil, que brota de su manantial pura y transparente, a una temperatura de 16 grados y con un sabor fresco y suavemente picante. ( Yes it´s a spring water , slightly mineralised, which sprouts from its spring pure and transparent at a temperature of 16 degrees and with a fresh and slightly peppery flavour.) LIZZIE: Parece mentira que haya tantas marcas diferentes de agua mineral con diferentes propiedades. (It seems unbelievable that there are so many different brands of mineral water with different properties.) CATHY: Es verdad. (It´s true.) El número de diferentes aguas minerales es asombroso. (The number of different mineral waters is amazing.) Bueno; parece que tenemos que beber mucha agua para gozar de buena salud. (Well; it seems that we have to drink a lot of water in order to enjoy good health.) Adiós y hasta la próxima vez. (Goodbye until the next time.)
