La relazione che li unisce prende la forma di un dialogo di lungo corso che si basa sulla condivisione di riferimenti, sullo scambio d’idee e sull’osservazione reciproca, e che ispira costantemente il loro reciproco processo creativo. La mostra, concepita dagli artisti stessi con l’amichevole complicità di Martin Bethenod in una serie di conversazioni informali nell’arco di due anni, si sviluppa attorno a un asse centrale “La Rue”, che propone un percorso nella memoria condivisa degli artisti, accostando pezzi di status molto vari, opere propriamente dette, oggetti, schizzi, souvenirs... Essa mette in comunicazione otto sale concepite ognuna come un universo a sé, che rende astratti gli elementi contestuali e si concentra sulla dimensione intrinsecamente autonoma delle opere. Due sale mettono a confronto le opere dei Santillana. Disposte tra questi due forti momenti d’incontro, le varie sale della mostra sono dedicate in eguale misura a Laura e ad Alessandro, con l’intenzione di non forzare mai il confronto ma,
al contrario, di giocare quasi musicalmente sugli effetti di contrasto, di rimandi e di corrispondenze tra una sala e l’altra. Si è scelto di concentrarsi su una dimensione fondamentale del loro vocabolario formale: la forma piatta, rettangolare, nata da una serie di gesti, eseguiti dall’artista o delegati ad altri. Schiacciare, appiattire, tappare, confondere, ottenebrare, questi gesti hanno in comune la messa in discussione del tutto e il forzare i limiti del medium e del materiale. Le Stanze del Vetro
Le Stanze del Vetro sono uno spazio espositivo e un progetto culturale nati dalla collaborazione tra Pentagram Stiftung e Fondazione Giorgio Cini onlus con lo scopo di favorire lo studio e la valorizzazione dell’arte vetraria del Novecento e riportare il vetro al centro del dibattito e della scena artistica internazionale. Ogni anno vengono organizzati seminari, mostre e laboratori. È stato costituito un Centro Studi e un archivio generale del vetro veneziano, e offerte borse di studio destinate a ricercatori e studiosi. Il programma prevede due mostre l’anno, e una serie di progetti paralleli. Le Stanze del Vetro hanno sede sull’Isola di San Giorgio Maggiore a Venezia e dispongono di 650 mq di superficie espositiva. cinquanta ospitava una scuola, è stata realizzata dallo studio Annabelle Selldorf Architects di NY. La Fondazione Giorgio Cini onlus, dopo un secolo di occupazione militare, ha ricostruito l’isola riproponendo le sue originali strutture storiche a scopo culturale e accademico.
Le attività didattiche Il programma didattico de Le Stanze del Vetro, ideato e curato da Artsystem comprende incontri, visite guidate e laboratori rivolti a scuole di ogni ordine e grado che si concludono con attività pratiche personalizzate. Le visite accompagnate per adulti sono basate su un’attenta analisi delle opere esposte, delle tecniche adottate per la loro realizzazione e dei legami con la storia del vetro e Venezia. Inoltre, visite speciali e laboratori saranno programmati nel corso dell’esposizione per famiglie con bambini 5-10 anni (SUNglassDAY: 8, 15, 22, 29 giugno ore 17) e giovani (FUSO! FUSO… 9, 16, 23 maggio ore 17) per approfondire, ascoltare, divertirsi e stupirsi con la conoscenza del vetro, uno dei materiali più delicati ed emozionanti nelle mani dell’uomo. Il sabato e la domenica, a partire dal 19 aprile, saranno disponibili visite accompagnate senza prenotazione con inizio alle ore 11 in lingua inglese e alle ore 17 in lingua italiana. Tutte le attività sono gratuite su prenotazione.

I Santillana / The Santillanas, traces the double trajectory of Laura de Santillana and Alessandro Diaz de Santillana. Brother and sister, and descendants of the legendary Venini family, both living and working in Venice. What ties them is a profound dialogue that rests on a common heritage of reference, the exchange of ideas, mutual observation that permanently underscores their respective creative procedures. The exhibition, conceived by the artists themselves, with a friendly helping hand from Martin Bethenod, hammered out over a good two years of noholds-barred discussion, is organized around a central axis, “La Rue”, representing the shared memory of the artists. Following a logic of recollection and free association, these pieces are from diverse periods and of widely varying formal status: works of art, utilitarian objects, drawings, souvenirs… It winds through the eight rooms: each of them is a world in itself, where contextual elements are set aside and the focus is on the autonomy of each
work. Two of the rooms oppose pieces by the Santillanas. Distributed between these two confrontational highpoints, the different rooms of the exhibition are dedicated sometimes to Laura, sometimes to Alessandro, with the idea of never insisting on their opposition, but of playing instead, in an almost musical fashion, on contrasting effects, antiphonies and parallels, from one room to the next. A deliberate choice has been made of concentrating on one fundamental dimension of Alessandro and Laura’s formal vocabulary: the flat, rectangular form, achieved through particular procedural sequences, either by the artists themselves or delegated to others. Crushing, flattening, filling, clouding, darkening, what all these interventions have in common are the refusal to accept anything as a given and a determination to stretch the limits of the medium and the material. Le Stanze del Vetro is an exhibiting space and a cultural initiative jointly promoted by Fondazione Giorgio Cini onlus and Pentagram Stiftung, devoted to the study of the art of glassmaking in the twentieth century. The aim of Le Stanze del Vetro is to reappraise the importance of glass in the international art scene. Every year workshops, conferences and seminars are organised. A Study Centre for Glass have been set up together with a general archive of Venetian glass and scholarships for researchers. The program of activities features two exhibitions per year, together with collateral projects. Le Stanze del Vetro is located on the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice with 650 square metres of exhibition space. The building, a former boarding school until the 1950s, was refurbished by Annabelle Selldorf Architects of New York. The building is part of the facilities run by Fondazione Giorgio Cini onlus, a non-profit institution, which has renovated the Island after 100 years of military
occupation, and has returned its original historic buildings to cultural and academic use. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES
The educational activities of Le Stanze del Vetro are curated by Artsystem, technical sponsor of the exhibition. They include talks tours and workshops for students of all levels with specific activities. Guided tours for adults are based upon the works on display, the different techniques and the links with the history of glassmaking and Venice. Moreover, special outings and activities are organized for families with children aged 5 to 10 years (SUNglassDAY: on the 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th of June at 5 pm) and for young visitors (FUSO! FUSO… on the 9th, 16th, 23rd May at 5 pm) to investigate, observe and have fun with glass, one of the most refined and inspiring media of all. On Saturdays and Sundays, starting from April 19th, guided tours will be available without booking, in English at 11 am and Italian at 5 pm. All the educational activities of Le Stanze del Vetro are free on reservation.
