Project opportunity types


Safety Enhancement 1 - Curb Extensions (Bump Outs) WHAT

WHY

Curb extensions (also known as bump outs) visually and physically narrow the roadway, creating safer and shorter crossings for pedestrians while increasing the available space for street furniture, benches, plantings, and street trees. Curb extensions have multiple applications including traffic calming, bus bulbs and mid-block crossings. They can be implemented quickly using low-cost, materials such as temporary curbs, bollards, planters, or striping.

Curb extensions increase the overall • visibility of pedestrians by aligning them • with the parking lane and reducing the crossing distance for pedestrians. They also • can serve as a visual cue to drivers that they should lower their speed.

Safety Enhancement 2 - Creative Crosswalks & Intersections WHAT

WHY

BENEFITS

Cities across the globe have been installing asphalt art treatments at intersections and pedestrian crossings for some time now with a goal of improving safety and the quality of life for all roadway users. Such projects have been used in a variety of applications, including within the crosswalk or within the center of an intersection.

The art is intended to create a highly visible crossing and suggest a walkable, active, shared use environment. Additionally, art in the crosswalk makes the pedestrian crossing location more conspicuous to drivers. A recent analysis by Bloomberg Philanthropies found significantly improved safety performance across variety of measures during periods when asphalt art was installed.

Safety Enhancement 3 - Temporary Cycle Track WHAT

WHY

BENEFITS

A cycle track is a protected bike facility that combines the user experience of a separated path with the on-street infrastructure of a conventional bike lane. A cycle track is physically separated from motor traffic and distinct from the sidewalk. In situations where on-street parking is allowed cycle tracks are located to the curb-side of the parking lane.

Eliminates risk and fear of collisions with over-taking vehicles.

High impact, high visibility implementation project

Reduces risk of ‘dooring’ compared to a bike lane, and eliminates the risk of a doored bicyclist being run over by a motor vehicle.

Fulfills an important public desire & goal of Downtown Strategic Plan

More attractive to a wide range of bicyclists at all levels and ages.

Complex, relatively expensive project with many touch points and engineering needs

Safety Enhancement 4 - Tactical Bike Lane Enhancements WHAT

WHY

BENEFITS

There are a number of existing bike lanes in Downtown, however none of these existing bike lanes are protected or separated from traffic. Tactical enhancements to these existing lanes can be implemented quickly using low-cost materials such as temporary curbs, bollards, planters, or striping.

Even small scale low cost improvements to existing bike lanes can improve safety and comfort of cyclists as well as show a strong commitment to bike infrastructure.

Traffic Calming Enhancement 1 - Meter Restriction Changes WHAT

WHY

BENEFITS

Many parking meters in Downtown are restricted from use from 4pm - 6pm in order to allow for the parking lane to be used as a travel lane. Removing these restrictions prevents the parking lane from being used as a travel lane.

Removing restrictions ensures there is a buffer (parked cars) between pedestrians and fast moving traffic. The removal of the restrictions limits the use of the curb lane as a travel lane allowing for the addition of curb extensions (bump outs) which shorten the crossing distance for pedestrians.

Traffic Calming Enhancement 2 - Lane & Turn Lane Elimination WHAT

WHY

BENEFITS

Downtown today has different traffic patterns and in many places reduced automobile volumes than the existing streets were designed to handle. There are many areas in Downtown with multiple single directional turn lanes or multiple travel or turn lanes on low traffic streets. Temporary road diets can eliminate these lanes using bollard or other temporary or semi-permanent materials.

Eliminating travel and turn lanes will slow traffic and create more space for pedestrians and cyclists. On streets where there are multiple turn lanes this also will reduce conflicts between high speed turning traffic and pedestrians in crosswalks.

Placemaking Enhancement 1 - Parklets & Seating Areas WHAT

WHY

BENEFITS

Seating can be provided by parklets or other designated seating areas in public space. A parklet is a sidewalk extension that provides more space and amenities for people using the street. Usually parklets are installed on parking lanes and use several parking spaces. Parklets typically extend out from the sidewalk at the level of the sidewalk to the width of the adjacent parking space.

Seating areas and parklets provide existing bars and restaurants with additional seating for patrons, broadening customer the base. They do not disrupt regular flow of foot traffic, as sidewalks remain unimpeded. They create more vibrant environments in business districts, often replacing cars with people having fun.

Placemaking Enhancement 2 - Existing Curb Extension Murals WHAT

WHY

BENEFITS

Throughout Downtown there are a number of street with existing curb extensions (bump outs) that were previously installed during various street improvement projects. These existing locations could be enhances with murals.

Curb extension murals provide opportunities for local artists to create artwork that is highly visible. These murals help to create interest and a sense of place. In addition, a recent analysis by Bloomberg Philanthropies found significantly improved safety performance across variety of measures during periods when asphalt art was installed.

Placemaking Enhancement 3 - Food Truck Area WHAT

WHY

BENEFITS

Designated areas of streets or other public spaces can provide opportunities for restaurants and encourage visitors to further utilize existing public spaces.

Food trucks are low cost entry level opportunities for restaurateurs and can easily inject targeted areas with vibrancy. Additional seating options can also be added to provide space for food truck visitors.

Placemaking Enhancement 4 - Alley Enhancements WHAT

WHY

BENEFITS

Alleys are one of Downtown’s most underutilized assets. Throughout the country and across the world alleys are vibrant spaces that host seating, artwork, and other elements that enhance vitality of the surround neighborhood.

There are many alley locations Downtown that are not necessary for service uses and therefore could host artwork, seating, and other amenities that would positively impact nearby businesses. These areas can become destinations in their own right.

Placemaking Enhancement 5 - Creative Parking Lot Screening WHAT

WHY

BENEFITS

Screening parking lots (where they are existing or necessary) is a fundamental part of urban design. Screening can consist of plant material, placemaking features, or public art.

Parking lots have a negative impact on the streetscape and detract from the vitality of street life and the urban form. Ultimately parking lots Downtown should be redeveloped but until that time they should be appropriately screened.

Placemaking Enhancement 6 - Parking Garage Public Art WHAT

WHY

BENEFITS

Parking garage public art can take many forms however the lowest cost and easiest to implement are murals, particularly on existing structures.

Parking garages are drab structures that detract from the urban form. Artwork has the opportunity to enliven the structure while also benefiting local artists in the creation of high visibility artwork.

Placemaking Enhancement 7 - Transit Shelter Public Art WHAT

WHY

BENEFITS

Transit shelters can accommodate public art in a variety of mediums. The most simple and cost effective public art intervention consists of using vinyl wraps that are affixed to existing glass panels. These wraps can easily be designed by artists and can accommodate a variety of artist mediums from watercolor to digital artwork.

Transit shelter public art can transform the dull experience of waiting for the bus to an entertaining art experience. This type of artwork also demonstrates a commitment to transit and improving the transit riders experience.

WHY

BENEFITS

Utility box art is a form of street art that utilized otherwise non-attractive utility boxes on city streets as a canvas for public art. In Columbus the preferred method of utility box art is vinyl wraps which also easily accommodate a variety of mediums of art.

Utility box public art enlivens the streetscape and provides opportunities for local artists to showcase work in the built environment.
