EINE RUNDE SACHE Bikeschulen haben genauso viel Freude daran wie Profis. Pumptrack und Skillpark stehen auch im Sommer 2019 wieder auf dem Parkplatz der Signalbahn in St. Moritz Bad. Das beliebte Angebot wurde im Sommer 2017 auf Initiative von Skiservice und Engadin St. Moritz Mountains erstmals realisiert. In diesem Sommer macht eine gemütlichere Platzgestaltung noch mehr Lust, um im Kreis zu fahren. Immer und immer wieder.

This summer at the Signalbahn! Where we have a great variety of rental bikes in stock for you. No matter if you prefer to go off with your family or if you are in for an exciting flow trail adventure, we have the right bike as well as the appropriate gear. At Chantarella, perched above St. Moritz, we welcome mountain bikers in our bike shop. Situated right at the bottom of the Corviglia Flow Trail, we carry rental bikes, the latest models for you to try out, apparel, gear and accessories. And, it goes without saying, we’ll sort you out should you have some problem with your bike.

AN ALL-ROUND SUCCESS Pros and biking schools alike are looking forward to the reopening this summer of the pump track and the skill park on the grounds of the Signalbahn’s bottom station in St. Moritz Bad. The two popular circuits were built on the initiative of Skiservice and Engadin St. Moritz Mountains for the first time in 2017. Set in a beautifully created space, this year, the circuit will be even more inviting to ride around in circles – over and over again.

CONRAD’ S MOUNTAIN LODGE Ein Jahr nach der Eröffnung ist die Conrad’s Mountain Lodge zum lebendigen Treffpunkt für Einheimische und Gäste geworden.

Im Herzen von Silvaplana ist ein Hotel und Restaurant entstanden, das Familien, Sportler und Geniesser gleichsam begeistert. CONRAD’ S MOUNTAIN LODGE Today, one year on from its inauguration, the Conrad's Mountain Lodge has become the buzzing place to meet for locals and visitors alike.

Situated in the heart of Silvaplana, the hotel-and-restaurant attracts families as much as it draws sports aficionados and pleasure-seekers. A lot of thought and care went into the design of the 25 rooms and suites: modern furniture mixes with the cosiness of local materials; top it with useful features and a sprinkle of individuality, and the result feels like a home away from home. The room rate includes the use of a mountain bike or skis (in winter) for each guest. The sports gear is provided by Skiservice. The in-house restaurant «Conrad’s Easy» awaits with a simple menu, although the chef uses anything but simple ingredients, only the best quality and a skilful preparation will do. The gourmet pizza is exceptional: a super-light, super-crusty dow topped with a variety of seasonal ingredients. It is presented in the centre of the table to be shared «Lodge style». DAS BIKE-ELDORADO DER ALPEN Mehr als 400 Kilometer Trails, Waldstrassen und Uferwege laden im Oberengadin zu kürzeren und längeren Touren ein. Wir nehmen Sie mit auf vier Touren: von der Talsohle bis zum Dreitausender – von Gravel bis Downhill – von E-Bike-Genuss bis Muskelkrampf.

VOM PIZ NAIR DURCH DAS VAL SCHLATTAIN: HOCHALPINER FLOW. Wir starten beim Bike Shop auf der Chantarella ob St. Moritz Dorf. Wer sein Bike schon hat, kann vom Dorf aus hochfahren, die anderen nehmen die Chantarella-Bahn. Die tausend Höhenmeter zum Piz Nair kann man mit dem Bike oder mit der Corviglia- und der Piz Nair-Bahn überwinden. Auf 3’000 Metern ist die Luft kühl oder sogar kalt: für die Abfahrt ist es gut, eine Jacke zu tragen. Auch sind die Hänge steil und das Terrain teils etwas rutschig – zu den Handschuhen sind deshalb auch Protektoren angesagt.

THE BIKE EL DORADO IN THE ALPS More than 400 km of trails, forest roads and paths along the lakes of the Upper Engadin are just waiting to be explored by bike. Come and join us on four very different routes: from the bottom of the valley to the top of the mountain, from gravel to downhill, from e-bike leisureliness to pure muscle exertion.

FROM PIZ NAIR THROUGH THE SCHLATTAIN VALLEY: THE ULTIMATE ALPINE FLOW. The start is at the bike shop at Chantarella above St. Moritz Dorf. Those who already have their bikes can ride up from the village, and everyone else hops on the Chantarella funicular. From Chantarella to Piz Nair is a hefty 1,000-meter climb, which you can either surmount by stepping into the pedals or by getting a lift to the top, with the Corviglia funicular and the Piz Nair cable car. Up at 3,000 meters, it will be cool, cold even: it is best to wear a jacket for the descent that follows. Moreover,

the slopes are steep and the terrain slippery in places – we recommend you were not only gloves but knee and elbow pads too. We set off, keeping right; first, we'll traverse a steep slope. With a bit of luck, we might spot an ibex or two. Ahead of us is a bumpy ride down to the Lej Alv. The water of the 'white lake' is used to produce snow in winters. We stop at the dam to take in the view towards the Lower Engadin before riding on towards Corviglia. That is where the Corviglia flow trail sets off: perfectly moulded into the steep hillside, the trail brings us back to Chantarella along what feels like a hundred turns and bumps. Here, Luis is expecting us. He runs not only the bike shop but also the "Alto Bar", THE in place of the biker community. Treat yourself to a barbecued Argentinian chorizo and an ice-cold Palü beer – you might even be tempted to go for seconds, the chorizos are heavenly.

Wir fahren los, halten uns rechts und queren den ersten Steilhang. Mit etwas Glück sehen wir hier ein paar Steinböcke. Der Weg rüttelt uns bergab zum Lej Alv (weisser See). Er ist der grösste Naturspeichersee der Schweiz. Vom Damm geniessen wir die Aussicht Richtung Unterengadin, bevor wir Richtung Corviglia weiterfahren. Nun beginnt der Corviglia Flowtrail: Kunstvoll in die steilen Hänge gelegt, bringt er uns durch gefühlte hundert Kehren und Hügel wieder nach Chantarella. Hier erwartet uns Luis, der neben dem Bike-Shop auch die «Alto Bar» betreibt. Sie ist DER Treffpunkt der Bikerszene. Unser Geheimtipp: Argentinische Chorizos vom Grill und ein kühles Palü-Bier. DER FOPPETTAS FLOWTRAIL: FÜR GENIESSER. Ausgangspunkt für unsere zweite Tour ist der Skiservice Bike Shop an der Talstation der Signalbahn in St. Moritz-Bad (1’780 m.ü.M). Hier steht eine breite Auswahl an Bikes, Helmen, Protektoren und Outfits zur Verfügung. Der sportliche Teil der Gruppe nimmt zum Aufwärmen den Trail bergwärts. Via Oberalpina und Salastrains geht es zur Bergstation Signal (2'120 m.ü.M). Die gemütlichere Alternative ist die Schwebebahn, die uns über die Villen des Suvrettagebietes hinweg auf den Signalhügel bringt. Hier können wir uns im «Signalstübli» ein erstes Mal stärken. Auf der Sonnenterrasse geniessen wir die Aussicht auf die obere Seenplatte und warten auf unsere

THE FOPPETTAS FLOW TRAIL: FOR THE EASY-GOING. The starting point for our second route is the Skiservice bike shop at the bottom station of the Signalbahn in St. Moritz-Bad (at 1,780 meters). You will find a large selection of bikes, helmets, pads and outfits for all ages. The fitter half of the group can hit the trail and get a decent warm-up: pedalling uphill past Oberalpina and Salastrains to the top station of Signalbahn (2,120 meters). The comfy alternative is to ride up with the cableway, which affords a bird's eye view of the mansions on Suvretta Hill. The «Signalstübli» at the top offers the first opportunity to stop for refreshments; its sunny terrace is the perfect place to enjoy the view across the lakes that nestle in the Engadin valley while we wait for our sporting aces who have opted for the trail up.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN

Sportskanonen, die den Aufstieg über den Trail gewählt haben. Gemeinsam geht’s jetzt westwärts über el Paradiso auf die Alp Suvretta (2'210 m.ü.M). Vor der eindrücklichen Kulisse des Piz Julier beginnt die Abfahrt Richtung Suvretta. Der Trail ist gut ausgebaut; ab und zu kommen uns Wanderer und auch Biker entgegen. Im Engadin nutzen Biker und Wanderer fast alle Wege gemeinsam. Respekt und Rücksicht sind hier selbstverständlich. Die ersten Häuser kommen näher und direkt vor dem ersten zweigen wir rechts ab – hinunter in den Foppettas-Trail. Der Trail ist rhythmisch durch einen traumhaften Nadelwald gelegt. Der Trail endet etwas plötzlich mitten im Wald, Von dort führt dann ein Forstweg zur steilen Strasse nach Champfèr und von dort geht es über verschiedene Wege wieder zur Signalbahn. Im Nu haben wir mehr als 400 Höhenmeter vernichtet. AUF NIETZSCHES SPUREN INS VAL FEX. Noch einmal treffen wir uns an der St. Moritzer Signalbahn. Jetzt kommen aber die Gravel Bikes zum Einsatz: ungefederte, klassische Rennräder – mit breiten und etwas weicheren Reifen. Wer für diese längere Tour gern elektrische Unterstützung hätte, findet hier auch e-Bikes. Wir fahren am Lej da Champfèr vorbei nach Silvaplana und Surlej. Dort biegen wir beim Schloss aber rechts ab zum linken Seeufer Richtung Sils. Im Ort der Denker und Poeten lebte einst Friedrich Nietzsche – Hermann Hesse, Max Frisch, Thomas Mann oder Kurt Tucholsky verbrachten hier ihre Sommer.

Together, we head west to el Paradiso and then Alp Suvretta (2,210 meters). Against the backdrop of the spectacular Piz Julier, we head down toward Suvretta. The trail is well maintained. We will cross paths with hikers and bikers on their way up. It is perfectly normal that hikers and bikers use the same trails – mutual respect and consideration is a given. As we approach the houses, we look out for the Foppettas trail: it forks out to the right just before the first house. The trail has a rhythmic flow to it and is set in a gorgeous pine forest. The trail stops somewhat abruptly in the middle of the woods. From there, a forest road will take you to the steep road to Champfèr, from where several routes will take you back to the Signalbahn. It will seem like you made the 400-meter descent in no time. FOLLOWING NIETZSCHE'S RAMBLINGS INTO THE VAL FEX. We meet at the bottom station of the Signal cableway once more. This time, though, we take the gravel bikes: traditional road bikes without suspension forks, but with somewhat wider and softer tyres. Some may opt for an e-bike as it will be a long journey. We head off towards Silvaplana and Surlej along Lej da Champfèr. At the castle that stands at the entrance of the village, we turn right and follow the path on the left shoreline of Lake Silvaplana until we reach Sils. The favourite haunt of poets and thinkers is the former home of Friedrich Nietzsche; Hermann Hesse, Max Frisch, Thomas Mann, and Kurt Tucholsky would spend their summers. We turn the corner past Hotel Waldhaus, which is reminiscent of a castle and perched high above the village, and get our first glimpse of the Val Fex. The valley looks as pretty as a picture and is lined with places to stop for a bite or a drink in the sun. At the end of the valley, we ride up on the right-hand side to

Alp Muot Selvas. The climb is worth the effort in more than one way: we will be served fresh local specialities produced on site, all the while taking in a breathtaking view of the glacier and mountain range that is bound to be the envy of everyone back home. We head back the way we came. This time around, though, we'll have the breeze from Maloja as a tailwind and time will fly on the way home.

Vorbei am Hotel Waldhaus, das wie ein grosses Schloss über dem Dorf thront, fahren wir ins malerische Fextal. Immer wieder bieten sich Restaurants für eine Rast an der Sonne an. Ganz hinten im Tal fahren wir rechts hoch zur Alp Muot Selvas. Der kurze Aufstieg lohnt sich gleich doppelt: Auf der Alp am Ende des Talwegs werden einfache, frische Spezialitäten serviert, die direkt vor Ort produziert wurden. Und die Terrasse bietet eine Aussicht auf Berge und Gletscher, die garantiert jeden Zuhausegebliebenen neidisch machen wird. Zurück geht es dann auf wieder demselben Weg, der Malojawind bläst nun aber von hinten und lässt den Nachhauseweg wie im Flug vergehen. DIE LAKE-TOUR: GANZ GEMÜTLICH MIT DEM E-BIKE. Wir treffen uns wieder im Bike-Shop an der Signalbahn in St. Moritz Bad. Hier wählen die Sportlichen wieder ein Gravel Bike und die Geniesser ein E-Bike. Vorbei am Badesee Lej Marsch folgt der Lej da Champfèr, an dessen rechtem Ufer wir Richtung Silvaplana fahren. Nachmittags bläst hier meist ein steifer Gegenwind, so dass wir die Tour besser am Morgen beginnen. Über die Brücke geht’s nach Surlej. Vorbei an den untersten Häusern finden wir den Weg zum Lej Nair. Der Aufstieg durch den Wald misst zwar nur etwa 70 Höhenmeter, aber er ist etwas steil. Die Belohnung kommt aber sofort: Der Lej Nair (schwarzer See) liegt idyllisch in einer Waldlichtung. An mehreren Feuerstellen liegt Brennholz für ein Picknick bereit und wer das kalte Wasser nicht scheut, kann hier auch baden. Zeit für eine erste Pause. Nun geht’s zurück nach St. Moritz. Hinter dem St. Moritzersee steigt der Weg noch einmal an zum Stazersee. Die historische Badeanlage lädt wieder zum Bade ein und wir bleiben in der Sonne liegen, bis sie hinter dem Piz Julier verschwindet. Zurück zur Signalbahn fahren wir am besten durch den Wald, so hält sich der Gegenwind in Grenzen.

THE LAKE TOUR: A LEISURELY E-BIKE OUTING. Once again, we meet up at the bike shop at the Signalbahn in St. Moritz-Bad. Sporting aces will grab a gravel bike, those feeling lazy an e-bike. We head off towards Silvaplana, passing Lej Marsch, a favourite spot with swimmers, then Lej da Champfèr, where we keep on the right shore. There will usually be a strong headwind in the afternoons, so it's best to do the tour in the morning. We cross the road bridge to Surlej. Past the bottom-most houses on the very left of the village, we find the path to Lej Nair. It will be a short but steep climb up through the woods – killing some 70 vertical meters – but the destination is every bit worth the pedalling. The Lej Nair (black lake) nestles in an idyllic forest glade. A perfect setting for a picnic – BBQ pits come equipped with firewood – and a guaranteed refreshing dip in the lake – time for a first break. From there, we head back to St. Moritz. Past Lake St. Moritz, there is one last climb ahead of us taking us to Lej da Staz. The lido, whose heyday was in colonial times, is still the best place to swim. We lounge in the sun until it sets behind the Piz Julier. On our way back to Signal, we opt for the path through the woods to escape the headwind.

DIE NATURSCHÄTZE VON MALOJA Wandern ist im Engadin ein schier grenzenloses Vergnügen. Auf mehr als 580 Kilometern sollen sich die Wege durch die Berglandschaft schlängeln. Doch so genau weiss das niemand, denn wo beginnt das Engadin eigentlich? Viele sagen in Maloja, was aber nicht ganz stimmt.

Es ist wie eine Offenbarung. Nach den steilen und engen Kurven des Malojapass öffnet sich plötzlich das Tal und die Weite des Engadins breitet sich aus. Die Hänge fallen nicht mehr bedrohlich hinab, sondern neigen sich sanft zu Tale. Trotzdem sind die Berge imposant und tragen Spitzen, die auch im Sommer weiss glitzern. Die Luft ist frisch und der Himmel blauer als sonst. Und spätestens wenn man den Silsersee funkeln sieht, spürt man die Magie des Engadins und seines vielbeschriebenen Lichts. Ja, in Maloja beginnt die einzigartige Landschaft des Engadins. Doch politisch gehört Maloja, wie auch

M A LOJA' S M A R VE L S O F N ATU R E The Engadin has sheer endless wandering grounds. The cumulated trail distance is said to be 580 kilometres, some claim more even. No one quite knows – for one, where does the Engadin begin? Most would agree it begins in Maloja, though that's not quite right either.

It begins like a revelation. After the steep and narrow turns of the Maloja Pass, the valley suddenly opens up, and the expanse of the Engadin spreads out ahead. We leave behind menacing abysses to revel in the view of gently sloping hills. The mountains high above are no less majestic and wear white peaks, even in summer. The air is crisp and the sky a more intense blue than elsewhere. By the time we reach Lake Sils, the magic of the Engadin and its famed natural light has us mesmerised. It is true, the landscape so unique to the Engadin begins in Maloja. But, politically, Maloja belongs to the Val Bregaglia, as does the hamlet Isola. Thus, the official

der kleine Weiler Isola, zum Bergell. Deshalb ist hier Italienisch Amtssprache und nicht etwa das Rätoromanische. Maloja ist aber nicht nur deswegen ein besonderer Ort, es ist vor allem ein wunderschöner Ort, so wild und ursprünglich. Vom einzigartigen Lichtspiel in Maloja liess sich bereits der Maler Giovanni Segantini inspirieren. Wer sich Zeit nimmt, entdeckt hier erstaunlich vielfältige Landschaften. Zum Wandern ist Maloja ein wahrer Geheimtipp. Wir empfehlen Ihnen eine Wanderung an den «Lägh da Cavloc», wie die Einheimischen sagen. Der idyllische Bergsee ist auch als Cavloc See oder Cavlocciosee bekannt. Wichtig ist, dass Sie es «kavlotsch» aussprechen, falls Sie im Dorf nach dem Weg fragen. Der Cavlocciosee liegt am Anfang des Seitentals Val Forno. Er ist tiefblau, verwinkelt und hat sogar einen kleinen Strand. Die Wassertemperaturen erreichen aber selten mehr als 18° Grad. Im kühlen Nass zu schwimmen, ist trotzdem eine kribbelige Wohltat. Direkt am See hat es auch ein Restaurant, das regionale Spezialitäten serviert. Haben Sie schon mal schwarze Polenta gegessen? Von Maloja aus erwandern Sie den Cavlocciosee in gut einer Stunde. Die einfachste Route führt über einen breiten Feldweg. Dieser ist auch mit dem Kinderwagen begehbar; es warten aber ein paar steile Rampen und linkerhand klafft die Schlucht der Orlegna. Kenner nehmen den Weg

Hiking around Maloja is one of the best-kept secrets. We recommend you head to the «Lägh da Cavloc», as the locals call it. The picturesque mountain lake is also known as Lake Cavloc or Cavloccio. Sie können dabei dem «Schmugglerpfad» folgen, der mit Illustrationen und Informationen sowie mit Kletterbrücken und anderen Spielereien versehenen ist. Oder Sie bleiben auf dem «normalen» Weg, der über eine schöne Aussichtsplattform führt. Auch wenn es eine leichte Wanderung ist, sind feste Schuhe empfehlenswert. Und im Grenzgebiet zwischen Bergell und Engadin kann das Wetter schnell umschlagen. Eine gute Wind- und Regenjacke gehört in jeden Rucksack. Und vergessen Sie nicht, Ihre Trinkflasche zu füllen. In Maloja können Sie noch weitere Naturschätze entdecken. Zum Beispiel den Pass Lunghin, wo sich die einzige Dreifachwasserscheide von Europa befindet, oder die zahlreichen Gletschermühlen. to the Val Forno, a side valley to the Engadin. The lake is a deep blue, has a twisting shoreline, and comes with a small beach! Water temperatures hover around 18 degrees at best, but the tingling sensation you get from swimming in the lake is most agreeable. There is a restaurant right on the lake serving local specialities – go for the black polenta if you have never tasted it. It takes about an hour to hike up to Lake Cavloccio. The easiest route is along the dirt road. This route is suitable for prams and strollers, although there are a few steep ramps to overcome and there will be a sheer drop off your left, the Orlegna gorge. Those in the know will take the route via the «Lägh da Bitabergh», taking you through a larch forest, full of scents of the rich vegetation. Either follow the signs of the «Schmugglerpfad» (smugglers' path), this route is quite entertaining: the signposts are full of trivia and illustrations, and there are some balancing bridges and other diversions along the way. Or, take the 'standard' route, which will reward you with a scenic viewpoint on the way. Even though it is an easy hike, solid shoes are recommended. Also, the weather on the brink between the Engadin and the Val Bregaglia is quick to change. So, make sure to pack a wind and rain jacket. Also, remember to fill up your water bottle. Maloja offers a few other natural wonders, such as the Lunghin Pass, Europe's only three-way watershed, and numerous moulins, or glacier potholes. Have fun!
