HELI-SKIING IN KANADA Es war die Leidenschaft für den Skisport, die Curdin Conrad 1976 zum Gründer von Skiservice Corvatsch werden liess. Hat ein Unternehmen dieser Art doch den angenehmen Nebeneffekt, den Sport selbst leben zu dürfen. Verwöhnt von Pisten- und Wetterbedingungen im Engadin, gibt es dennoch Verlockungen, denen er regelmässig erliegt. So zieht es ihn und seine Freunde aus dem Tessin einmal im Jahr in die unvergleichliche Bergwelt von Kanada um dort atemberaubende Abfahrten durch unberührten Pulverschnee zu erleben. Wenn das Wetter mitspielt, überwinden sie innerhalb einer Woche bis zu 60'000 Höhenmeter. Für Curdin bietet diese Tour zusätzlich die Gelegenheit, die Innovationen der Ski-Industrie für die kommende Saison zu testen. Schliesslich ist auch Werner, der sogenannte Spezialist dabei, der auf technikbezogene Fragen stets eine Antwort hat. Jeden Morgen fliegt die Gruppe von der Lodge los, um ein neues unberührtes Terrain zu entdecken. An enterprise like this bears the pleasant allowance to practice a sporty lifestyle yourself. Even though he is spoilt by the conditions of the snow and the weather in Engadin, there are some temptations he succumbs to frequently. Once a year he and his Tessin friends are drawn to the unique mountain world of Canada where they experience breathtaking first-track skiing. When the weather is cooperating, they surmount 60.000 m difference in altitude within one week. For Curdin this exhilarating tour offers a perfect opportunity to test the latest innovations of the skiing industry. It happens that Werner, the so called »specialist« is also with them and there is no technique related question he was not able to answer. Every morning they take a flight from the lodge to discover a new untouched wilderness. Der BMW i3 hat diesem Lebensstil, dem Ecoismus, eine ganze Plattform gewidmet.

KANADISCHES FLAIR

Wenn zwei Vierer Teams auf Schlittschuhen mit Krummschläger und Ball auf zwei Tore spielen, dann nennt man das Pond Hockey. Gian Gilli, Menduri Kasper, Renato Maggi und Hannes Tschudin entdeckten das Spiel in Brunswick, Kanada. Fasziniert von Wettkampf, Spass und Geselligkeit brachten sie es 2008 ins Engadin. Jetzt geht der kanadische Import ins 6. Jahr: Vom 24. bis 26.01. 2014 finden die »6. Swiss Pond Hockey Championship« am Champfèrersee bei Silvaplana statt. An drei Tagen werden auf dem zugefrorenen See 64 Teams aus der Schweiz und aus anderen europäischen Ländern gegeneinander antreten. Erlebnisqualität und Spass garantiert. Für das leibliche Wohl wird im Festzelt gesorgt. 2013 zählten die Veranstalter 1500 Besucher. Aber auch das Spielerinteresse ist gross. Schon jetzt gibt es eine lange Warteliste.

CANADIAN FLAIR

If there are two teams of four on skates with hockey sticks and a puck, playing with two goals, you have a game called Pond Hockey. Gian Gilli, Menduri Kasper, Renato Maggi und Hannes Tschudin discovered this game in Brunswick Canada. Fascinated by the competition, fun and conviviality, they brought it to the Engadin in 2008. Now the Canadian import goes into its 6th year: The »6 th Swiss Pond Hockey Championship« on Champfèrersee at Silvaplana will take place from January 24 to 26, 2014. On three days 64 teams from Switzerland and other European countries will compete on the frozen lake. Great experience and fun is guaranteed. Food and drink will be provided at the pavilion. In 2013, 1500 visitors attended the Pond Hockey games, as interest in this competition is overwhelming. The waiting list is as long as the number of prospective teams is large. www.pondhockey.ch

Um in den Olymp des Spitzensports aufzusteigen, braucht es neben viel Training und absoluter Disziplin - auch die nötigen Mittel. Conradin Conrad weiss aus eigener Erfahrung, wie viel Energie der Weg zur Spitze ambitionierten Sportlern und Sportlerinnen abverlangt. Er war in seinen Teenagerjahren selbst Mitglied des regionalen Kaders. Mittlerweile ist er neben seinem Vater in der Geschäftsführung des Familienunternehmens aktiv und es ist ihm ein Anliegen, regionale Nachwuchssportler zu ermutigen und auch materiell zu unterstützen. Gleichzeitig bietet das Sponsorship von Engadiner Sporttalenten die Möglichkeit, der Region und dem Sport etwas zurückzugeben. Über die Förderung der ausserordentlichen Talente entscheidet nicht allein ihr Erfolg, sondern auch ihre Persönlichkeit. Aktuell wird Nachwuchs im Alter von 15 bis 17 Jahren unterstützt. Vanessa Kasper (17) aus Celerina hat 2013 bei den Olympischen Spielen der Jugend in Brasov (Ru) die Bronzemedaille gewonnen. Sie ist Mitglied des Nationalen Leistungszentrum Ski Alpin Ost. Sebastian Fiol (15) aus St. Moritz und Sina Conrad (15) aus Pontresina sind Mitglied des Regionalkaders und haben Top 15 Platzierungen in den Schweizer Meisterschaften. Neben dem Skinachwuchs unterstützt das Familienunternehmen auch Kinder aus unterprivilegierten Gesellschaftsgruppen. Mit diesem Anliegen wurde Skiservice Corvatsch 2012 zum Gründungsmitglied des lokalen Fördervereins »Helfetia Kids for Mountains«. Die Initiative entstand mit dem Ziel, den betreffenden Kindern den Zugang zum Schnee und Bergsport zu ermöglichen. Zu diesem Zweck werden u.a. Camps veranstaltet und Schulskilager unterstützt. Der Verein finanziert sich ausschliesslich aus Spendengeldern und freut sich neue Gönner begrüssen zu dürfen. Der nächste „Fun(d)raising“ Benefiz Event findet am 22. Summiting the Olympus of elite sports not only involves a lot of training and absolute discipline, it also requires the necessary funds. Conradin Conrad was himself a member of the regional squad in his teenager years. Thus he knows from his own experience how much of an athlete’s it takes to reach the top. Meanwhile he manages, alongside with his father, their family business. It is a mission for him to encourage up-and-coming junior athletes and to support them financially. At the same time, this is an opportunity to give back something to the region and to the sport. Success alone does not decide whether a talent will be supported or not, also their personality counts. Currently the company sponsors junior athletes aged between 15 and 17. Vanessa Kasper (17) from Celerina already won bronze medal at the Olympic Youth Games in Brasov (Ru) in 2013. She is a member of the National Centre of Performance Ski Alpine East. Sebastian Fiol (15) from St. Moritz and Sina Conrad (15) from Pontresina are both members of the regional pool and have top 15 placements at the Swiss championships lately. Besides the sponsorship of up-and-coming junior athletes, the family-owned company give children and young people from less privileged social groups the possibility to engage in mountain and snow sports. With this commitment Skiservice Corvatsch became one of the founding members of the local sponsoring association »Helfetia Kids for Mountains«. Their main activity is to run their own skiing camps and support school camps. The non-profit sponsoring association is financed exclusively through donations and is happy to welcome new sponsors. Their next charity event »Fun(d)raising« is taking place at the El Paradiso lodge on March 22, 2014. Philipp Fankhauser Band is providing excellent musical entertainment, and the ski legend Lasse Kjus is expected to make an appearance. A further highlight is the tombola with an exclusive Hublot watch being one of the prizes. The attendance fee is CHF 300.-, including catering. GASPARIN SCHWESTERN JAGENDE ATHLETINNEN In einer Höhle in Norwegen ist ein mit Pfeil und Bogen jagender Mann abgebildet. Die Malerei ist 5000 Jahre alt und Experten sehen darin einen Vorläufer des Biathlonsport. Pfeil und Bogen wurden im Lauf der Zeit gegen ein leichtes Kleinkalibergewehr getauscht. Die Herausforderung in der Jagd auf Skiern ist die gleiche geblieben: Es geht darum, Ausdauer und Präzision zu vereinbaren. Und genau das liegt den drei Gasparin Schwestern aus dem Engadin. Aber die Trophäe, die unsere drei Athletinnen verfolgen, ist Gold - und 2014 soll es nicht irgendein Gold sein, sondern Olympiagold. Das mag nicht für alle drei möglich sein, aber alle drei wollen sich auf die Jagd machen.

STORY Selina ist eine kraftvolle Langläuferin, Elisa ein ausserordentliches Talent im Schiessen und Aita die Jüngste, ist sowohl im Langlaufen als auch im Schiessen gut.

Selina, die älteste der Gasparin Schwestern, gilt als Pionierin im Schweizer Damen Biathlon und als führende Biathletin in der Schweiz. Sie wechselte 2004 vom Skilanglauf zum Biathlon und stieg 2010 in den Schweizer Skiverband Swiss-Ski auf, wo sie die erste Schweizerin war, die zu Weltcup und Olympiade angetreten ist. Mittlerweile gibt es sechs Biathletinnen im Swiss-Ski – darunter die drei Schwestern Gasparin. Aita (19), die jüngste von ihnen, startet noch in der Juniormannschaft, Elisa (22) und Selina (29) in der Damenmannschaft. Es liegt auch an den geographischen Eigenheiten ihrer Heimat, dass Sie einen der begehrten Plätze im Skiverband erlangt haben. Das Engadin bietet die perfekten Voraussetzungen für den Wintersport. Durch den regionalen Skiclub und den Schulsport waren die drei Gasparin Schwestern von Kindesbeinen an auf Langlaufskiern. Ihre Eltern sind durchschnittliche Freizeitsportler, also war es vermutlich der Sinn der Ältesten für den Wettkampf, der auch den Kampfgeist der Jüngeren entfacht hat. Als Teenager war Selina Organisatorin und Teilnehmerin ihrer eigenen Sport-Events im elterlichen Garten, in denen sie gegen ihre Schwestern antrat ...

DER GROSSE TRAUM

STEREOTYPEN

Zunächst geht es aber noch um die Qualifikation zu den Olympischen Spielen. Theoretisch haben alle drei die Chance in Sochi an den Start zu kommen, aber sie sind realistisch genug, um zu wissen, dass es sehr knapp wird. Ginge es allein nach dem Weltcup-Punktestand, dann stünde bereits fest, dass vier Athletinnen aus dem Schweizer Biathlon-Team nach Sochi fahren. Weil Swiss Olympic noch mal eigene Regelungen hat, ist die Qualifikation jedoch zusätzlich an einen zweifachen Top 25 Rang im Weltcup 2014/15 gebunden. Wenn sich die Schwestern qualifizieren, so gilt es in Sochi den traditionell stärksten Nationen – Norwegen, Deutschland, Russland – die Stirn zu bieten. Eine weitere Herausforderung sind die schwer einschätzbaren klimatischen Bedingungen. Sochi liegt in der südrussischen Provinz Krasnodar am Schwarzen Meer. Das Wetter ist wechselhaft und sowohl Regen als auch Frost sind möglich. Für die Biathletinnen kann das vom höchsten Punkt der Loipe bis zum tiefsten Punkt, sehr unterschiedliche

Dass der Biathlonsport vor der Ära Gasparin eine männliche Domäne war und es für ihre Mutter nicht selbstverständlich war, dass ein 14-jähriges Mädchen eine Waffe im Zimmer stehen hat, hat die drei nicht abgehalten. Sie lieben ihren Sport und verteidigen ihn – besonders wenn es um das verbreitete Klischée geht, dass, wer im Langlauf nicht gut sei, zu Biathlon wechsle. Schliesslich ist im Biathlon neben der Präzision auch die Ausdauer gefordert. Das Klischée hält sich vielleicht auch deshalb so hartnäckig, weil der Biathlonsport in der Schweiz bisher eine untergeordnete Rolle gespielt hat. Weltweit ist die Popularität seit den 1990er Jahren enorm gestiegen und seit der Jahrtausendwende zählt Biathlon zu den populärsten Wintersportarten. Damen Biathlon ist erst seit den Winterspielen in Albertville 1992 eine olympische Disziplin, entwickelte sich seither aber rapide.

Am ehesten hat Selina, die Älteste Gasparin-Schwester, eine Chance auf Olympiagold. Aber dabei sein wollen alle drei. Ihr grosser Traum ist es, zu dritt zur Staffel anzutreten. Dazu ist zu wissen, dass alle drei Schwestern in allen Disziplinen antreten: Einzellauf, Sprint, Verfolgung, Massenstart, Staffel, gemischte Staffel und Mannschaftswettkampf. Wobei Stärken und Schwächen von Biathleten eher in den Faktoren Ausdauer und Präzision als in Disziplinen deutlich werden. Das liegt daran, dass der Start auch eine Sache der Qualifikation ist. Während in Einzellauf und Sprint jeder zugelassen ist, geht es in Verfolgung, Massenstart, Staffel und gemischter Staffel zunehmend um Potenzial. Ihr grosser Traum, zu dritt zur Staffel anzutreten, wäre gleichbedeutend damit, dass sie drei der vier besten Damen aus dem Schweizer Team sind. Die einzig mögliche Steigerung dazu ist nur noch die gemischte Staffel, in der jeweils die zwei besten Damen und die zwei besten Herren einer Nation zugelassen sind.

REALISMUS

Bedingungen bedeuten. Aber es gibt auch einen Vorteil für die Gasparin Schwestern in Sochi: Die Olympiaregion liegt auf einer Seehöhe von 1'400 m. Das sind fast Trainingsbedingungen. Das Engadin liegt auf 1'600 m Seehöhe. Dagegen trainieren die konkurrierenden Athletinnen zu Hause mehr oder weniger auf Seehöhe.

KREATIVITÄT

Die Schwestern widmen - abhängig von der Jahreszeit - täglich ca. vier Stunden dem physischen Training und eine Stunde dem Schiessen. Selina hat in Norwegen Sport und Bewegungswissenschaften studiert und ist von Beruf Grenzwächterin. Da bei ihrem Arbeitgeber, dem Bund, Trainingszeit als Arbeitszeit gilt, steht sie tatsächlich selten an der Grenze und kann sich dem Spitzensport widmen. Elisa hat die Handelsmittelschule absolviert und ist Fitness-Trainerin, kann ihren Beruf aber, wie Selina, nur an gezählten Tagen im Sommer ausüben. Aita geht noch ins Gymnasium und hat ihre Schulzeit schon um ein Jahr verlängert, um ausreichend trainieren zu können. Im kommenden Frühjahr will sie zur Matura antreten. Als Mitglied der Juniormannschaft, hat Aita noch geringere Trainingsverpflichtungen. Verbringen ihre älteren Schwestern zwei Wochen pro Monat im nationalen Trainingszentrum in Realp, Innerschweiz, so ist es bei ihr bloss eine. In der verbleibenden Zeit haben Elisa und Selina einen Privattrainer im Engadin. Über die Trainingsbedingungen am Militärgelände in S-chanf würden Athletinnen anderer Nationen lachen. Aber für die passionierten Schwestern tut es seinen Zweck. Es gibt dort einen Schiessstand und viele kleine Strassen, auf denen sie Rollskifahren können. Darüberhinaus haben sie sich provisorische Trainingsbedingungen geschaffen – wie sie das früher schon im elterlichen Garten gemacht haben ... Curdin, Christina und Conradin Conrad bewundern die ambitionierten Schwestern für ihr Talent und die Beharrlichkeit, mit der Sie ihre Ziele verfolgen. Auch sind sie stolz, TopAthletinnen wie die Gasparins im Engadin zu haben.

STEREOTYPES

HUNTING ATHLETES An ancient cave painting in Norway portrays a man on skis, hunting with bow and arrow. The painting is 5000 years old, and experts consider it a precursor of the modern biathlon. Through the ages, bow and arrow have been replaced by a small caliber rifle, but the challenge yielded by hunting on skis remains the same: integrating endurance and precision. This is exactly what the three Gasparin sisters from the Engadin excel at. But the trophy our three female biathletes pursue is gold. Not any gold, but 2014 Olympic gold. Maybe not all of them will succeed, but all three are in for the hunt. Selina, the eldest of the Gasparin sisters, is regarded as being the trailblazer of the ladies’ biathlon in Switzerland as well as being her country’s leading biathlete as such. After having abandoned cross-country skiing and entered biathlon in 2004, she made her way onto the national team of the Swiss Ski Federation, Swiss-Ski, in 2010, and became the first female Swiss to compete in the World Cup and the Olympics. By now, Swiss-Ski count six female biathletes, including the three Gasparin sisters. While Aita (19), the youngest, still lines up in the junior team, Elisa (22) and Selina (29) compete for the ladies’ team. It is furthermore due to the geographical features of their homeland that they caught one of the much sought-after positions in the Swiss-Ski. The Engadin provides perfect conditions for winter sports. Thanks to the local skiing club and sports classes at school, the three Gasparin sisters have been on cross-country skis since an early age. As their parents are average ramblers and cyclists, it was probably the eldest sister’s competitiveness that sparked the fighting spirit in her younger sisters. As a teenager, Selina was both organiser of and participant in her own sports events in her parents’ garden, running up against her own sisters.

Prior to the era of the Gasparin sisters, biathlon was male territory. But neither this nor the fact that their mother did not feel comfortable in letting her then 14-year-old daughter Aita keep a weapon in her room, have stopped them. They love their sport and defend it, especially against the stereotypical accusation that failure at cross-country skiing is the only reason to become a biathlete. After all, biathlon requires not only endurance, but also precision in addition. Maybe this stereotype is rooted in the hitherto inferior status of biathlon in Switzerland. But since the 1990s the sport has shown an enormous increase in popularity and has since the change of millennium ranked among the most popular of the winter sports. It was not until the 1992 Albertville games that the first female biathletes were able to compete in the Olympics. Ever since it took a rapid development.

THE BIG DREAM

It is Selina, the eldest of the Gasparin sisters, who is most likely to win Olympic gold. Nevertheless, all three of them want to take part, and their biggest dream is starting as a threesome at the relay. All three sisters compete in all disciplines: individual, sprint, pursuit, mass start, relay and mixed relay. Still, a biathlete’s strengths and weaknesses are less revealed in the disciplines than through the core skills of endurance and precision, this because the line-up is also a question of qualification. Whereas everyone can partake individually and in the sprint, the disciplines of pursuit, mass start, relay and mixed relay call increasingly for the athlete’s potential. The dream of the Gasparin sisters to compete all together in the relay is equipollent with being among the top four female Swiss biathletes. This can only be exceeded by the mixed relay in which only the top two female and top two male biathletes qualify.

DOWN-TO-EARTH

First of all they must all qualify for the Olympic games. In theory all three of them have the chance to get a ticket to Sochi, but they are realistic enough to know that it might be a long shot. If it were only a matter of world cup scores, it would have been a given that our female Swiss biathletes line up in Sochi. But only because Swiss Olympic have their own regulations, the qualification additionally depends on having two top 25 seasonal rankings.

When the sisters qualify for the Olympic games, they will have to dare traditionally strong nations like Norway, Germany and Russia. Furthermore, they will be challenged by the near-unpredictable climatic conditions. Sochi is located in the southern Russian province of Krasnodar at the Black Sea. The weather is changeable with rain as likely as frost. To the biathletes this could mean widely varying conditions between the highest and the lowest point of the trail. But the sisters suppose that this might also prove an advantage of theirs over their competitors in Sochi: Sochi lies 1.400 metres above sea level, not unlike their training facilities at home. The Engadin is located at 1.600 metres, whereas biathletes from competing nations practise more or less at sea level back home.

CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

Four hours of the Gasparin sisters’s daily schedule are dedicated to physical exercise and one hour to shooting. Selina has studied Sports Science in Norway. Currently she works as a border guard, though she rarely gets to guard the border. Because the federal government, her employer, consider training hours working hours, she can devote herself to her elite sportsmanship. Elisa attended business school and works currently as a fitness trainer. Like Selina, she can only execute her job for a few days in summer. Aita, the youngest, is still attending secondary school and has already extended her schooling by one year in order to have sufficient practice time and aims at obtaining her school-leaving certificate spring next year. As a member of the junior team, Aita is committed to fewer training hours. When she spends one week per month at the national training centre in Realp in Central Switzerland, her elder sisters spend two weeks per month. In the remaining time Elisa and Selina are supported by a private trainer in the Engadin. Biathletes from other nations would laugh at their humble training conditions at the local military site in S-chanf. But for the passionate sisters it serves the purpose. There is a shooting stand available and the many small streets are well suited for roller skiing. Moreover, the sisters have yet again created makeshift training conditions, as they did in their childhood in their parental garden... Curdin, Christina and Conradin Conrad admire the three ambitious sisters for their talent and their determination in reaching their goals. They are also proud to have star athletes like the Gasparins in the Engadin.
